ਪਤਿਯਾ ਲਿਖੀ ਬਨਾਇ ਕੈ ਤਵਨ ਮੀਤ ਕੇ ਨਾਮ ॥
patiyaa likhee banaae kai tavan meet ke naam |
He wrote a letter on behalf of the lover,
ਏਕ ਅਤਿਥ ਕੋ ਹਾਥ ਦੈ ਪਠੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਕੇ ਧਾਮ ॥੬॥
ek atith ko haath dai patthee triyaa ke dhaam |6|
And through a friend sent to the woman.(6)

ਜਬ ਪਤਿਯਾ ਤਿਨ ਛੋਰਿ ਬਚਾਈ ॥
jab patiyaa tin chhor bachaaee |
ਮੀਤ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੰਠ ਲਗਾਈ ॥
meet naam sun kantth lagaaee |
When she listened to the letter and hearing the lover’s name she embraced it.
ਯਹੈ ਯਾਰਿ ਲਿਖਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਪਠਾਯੋ ॥
yahai yaar likh taeh patthaayo |
ਤੁਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਧਿਕ ਕਸਟ ਹਮ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੭॥
tum bin adhik kasatt ham paayo |7|
The lover had expressed that, without her he was in great distress.(7)
ਪਤਿਯਾ ਮੈ ਲਖਿ ਯਹੈ ਪਠਾਯੋ ॥
patiyaa mai lakh yahai patthaayo |
ਤੁਮ ਬਿਨ ਹਮ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਬਿਸਰਾਯੋ ॥
tum bin ham sabh kichh bisaraayo |
It was mentioned in the letter, ‘I am lost without you,
ਹਮਰੀ ਸੁਧਿ ਆਪਨ ਤੁਮ ਲੀਜਹੁ ॥
hamaree sudh aapan tum leejahu |
ਕਛੁ ਧਨੁ ਕਾਢਿ ਪਠੈ ਮੁਹਿ ਦੀਜਹੁ ॥੮॥
kachh dhan kaadt patthai muhi deejahu |8|
‘Now you must take care of me and send me some money to enable me to live.’(8)

ਸੁਨਤ ਬਾਤ ਮੂਰਖ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਭਈ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ︀ਯ ॥
sunat baat moorakh triyaa chit mai bhee prasanay |
Listening to all this, the foolish woman was very much delighted,
ਮੀਤ ਚਿਤਾਰਿਯੋ ਆਜੁ ਮੁਹਿ ਧਰਨੀ ਤਲ ਹੌਂ ਧੰਨ︀ਯ ॥੯॥
meet chitaariyo aaj muhi dharanee tal hauan dhanay |9|
And thought, ‘I am very lucky that my lover has remembered me.’(9)

The woman told the messenger, ‘I have explained in the letter,
ਪ੍ਰਾਤ ਸਮੈ ਪਿਛਵਾਰੇ ਐਹੌ ॥
praat samai pichhavaare aihau |
ਦੁਹੂੰ ਹਾਥ ਭਏ ਤਾਲ ਬਜੈਹੌ ॥੧੦॥
duhoon haath bhe taal bajaihau |10|
‘He should come early in morning at the back of the house and clap his hands twice.’(10)
ਜਬ ਤਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਵਨਨ ਸੁਨਿ ਪੈਯਹੁ ॥
jab taaree sravanan sun paiyahu |
ਤੁਰਤੁ ਤਹਾ ਆਪਨ ਉਠਿ ਐਯਹੁ ॥
turat tahaa aapan utth aiyahu |
‘When I will hear the clap with my own ears, I will immediately proceed to the place.
ਕਾਧ ਉਪਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਥੈਲੀ ਲੈਯਹੁ ॥
kaadh upar kar thailee laiyahu |
ਮੇਰੋ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਮਾਨਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਲੈਯਹੁ ॥੧੧॥
mero kahiyo maan triy laiyahu |11|
‘I will place the bag (containing money) on the wall and, I insist, he must take it away.(11)
ਪ੍ਰਾਤ ਸਮੈ ਤਾਰੀ ਤਿਨ ਕਰੀ ॥
praat samai taaree tin karee |
ਸੁ ਧੁਨਿ ਕਾਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਕੇ ਪਰੀ ॥
su dhun kaan triyaa ke paree |
In the morning he clapped his hands, which the lady heard,
ਥੈਲੀ ਕਾਧ ਊਪਰ ਕਰਿ ਡਾਰੀ ॥
thailee kaadh aoopar kar ddaaree |
ਭੇਦ ਨ ਲਖ︀ਯੋ ਦੈਵ ਕੀ ਮਾਰੀ ॥੧੨॥
bhed na lakhayo daiv kee maaree |12|
She placed the bag on the wall to collect, but unlucky one did not know the secret.(12)

ਯੌ ਹੀ ਬਾਰ ਛਿ ਸਾਤ ਕਰਿ ਲਯੋ ਦਰਬੁ ਸਭ ਛੀਨ ॥
yau hee baar chhi saat kar layo darab sabh chheen |
By repeating this action for six or seven time, she lost all her wealth,
ਭੇਦ ਨ ਮੂਰਖ ਤਿਯ ਲਖ︀ਯੋ ਕਹਾ ਜਤਨ ਇਹ ਕੀਨ ॥੧੩॥
bhed na moorakh tiy lakhayo kahaa jatan ih keen |13|
And the foolish woman did not discern the real mystery.

Proceeding on this course, the Rani was made money-less.
ਹਾਥ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਕੇ ਦਰਬੁ ਨ ਆਯੋ ॥

ਨਾਹਕ ਅਪਨੋ ਮੂੰਡ ਮੁੰਡਾਯੋ ॥੧੪॥

Neither the friend attained anything rather he got his head shaved off without any purpose (faced humiliation).(14)(1)

ਜੋ ਵਹੁ ਕਹੈ ਵਹੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕਹੈ ॥੨॥

From clay, He fashioned your body.
ਉਕਤਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਲੈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਪਰੀਖਿਆ ॥
aukat jot lai surat pareekhiaa |
He blessed you with the light of reason and clear consciousness.
ਮਾਤ ਗਰਭ ਮਹਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਿਆ ॥੧॥

In your mother's womb, He preserved you. ||1||
ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰੁ ਸਮ੍ਹਾਰਿ ਜਨਾ ॥

Contemplate your Savior Lord.

ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਏ ਤੁਧੁ ਬਾਪ ਮਹਤਾਰੀ ॥

He gave you your mother and father;
ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਏ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਪੁਤ ਹਾਰੀ ॥
jin dee bhraat put haaree |
he gave you your charming children and siblings;
ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਏ ਤੁਧੁ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਅਰੁ ਮੀਤਾ ॥
jin dee tudh banitaa ar meetaa |
he gave you your spouse and friends;
ਤਿਸੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਉ ਰਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਚੀਤਾ ॥੨॥
tis tthaakur kau rakh lehu cheetaa |2|
enshrine that Lord and Master in your consciousness. ||2||
ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਆ ਤੁਧੁ ਪਵਨੁ ਅਮੋਲਾ ॥
jin deea tudh pavan amolaa |
He gave you the invaluable air;
ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਆ ਤੁਧੁ ਨੀਰੁ ਨਿਰਮੋਲਾ ॥
jin deea tudh neer niramolaa |
He gave you the priceless water;
ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਆ ਤੁਧੁ ਪਾਵਕੁ ਬਲਨਾ ॥
jin deea tudh paavak balanaa |
He gave you burning fire;
ਤਿਸੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੀ ਰਹੁ ਮਨ ਸਰਨਾ ॥੩॥
tis tthaakur kee rahu man saranaa |3|
let your mind remain in the Sanctuary of that Lord and Master. ||3||
ਛਤੀਹ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਜਿਨਿ ਭੋਜਨ ਦੀਏ ॥
chhateeh amrit jin bhojan dee |
He gave you the thirty-six varieties of tasty foods;
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਥਾਨ ਠਹਰਾਵਨ ਕਉ ਕੀਏ ॥
antar thaan tthaharaavan kau kee |
He gave you a place within to hold them;
ਬਸੁਧਾ ਦੀਓ ਬਰਤਨਿ ਬਲਨਾ ॥
basudhaa deeo baratan balanaa |
He gave you the earth, and things to use;
ਤਿਸੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੇ ਚਿਤਿ ਰਖੁ ਚਰਨਾ ॥੪॥
tis tthaakur ke chit rakh charanaa |4|
enshrine in your consciousness the feet of that Lord and Master. ||4||
ਪੇਖਨ ਕਉ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਸੁਨਨ ਕਉ ਕਰਨਾ ॥
pekhan kau netr sunan kau karanaa |
He gave you eyes to see, and ears to hear;
ਹਸਤ ਕਮਾਵਨ ਬਾਸਨ ਰਸਨਾ ॥
hasat kamaavan baasan rasanaa |
He gave you hands to work with, and a nose and a tongue;
ਚਰਨ ਚਲਨ ਕਉ ਸਿਰੁ ਕੀਨੋ ਮੇਰਾ ॥
charan chalan kau sir keeno meraa |
He gave you feet to walk upon, and the crowning glory of your head;
ਮਨ ਤਿਸੁ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੇ ਪੂਜਹੁ ਪੈਰਾ ॥੫॥
man tis tthaakur ke poojahu pairaa |5|
O mind, worship the Feet of that Lord and Master. ||5||
ਅਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂ ਕਰਿਆ ॥
apavitr pavitru jin too kariaa |
He transformed you from impure to pure;
ਸਗਲ ਜੋਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਤੂ ਸਿਰਿ ਧਰਿਆ ॥
sagal jon meh too sir dhariaa |
He installed you above the heads of all creatures;
ਅਬ ਤੂ ਸੀਝੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਨਹੀ ਸੀਝੈ ॥
ab too seejh bhaavai nahee seejhai |
now, you may fulfill your destiny or not;
ਕਾਰਜੁ ਸਵਰੈ ਮਨ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਧਿਆਈਜੈ ॥੬॥
kaaraj savarai man prabh dhiaaeejai |6|
Your affairs shall be resolved, O mind, meditating on God. ||6||
ਈਹਾ ਊਹਾ ਏਕੈ ਓਹੀ ॥
eehaa aoohaa ekai ohee |
Here and there, only the One God exists.
ਜਤ ਕਤ ਦੇਖੀਐ ਤਤ ਤਤ ਤੋਹੀ ॥
jat kat dekheeai tat tat tohee |
Wherever I look, there You are.
ਤਿਸੁ ਸੇਵਤ ਮਨਿ ਆਲਸੁ ਕਰੈ ॥
tis sevat man aalas karai |
My mind is reluctant to serve Him;
ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਸਰਿਐ ਇਕ ਨਿਮਖ ਨ ਸਰੈ ॥੭॥
jis visariai ik nimakh na sarai |7|
forgetting Him, I cannot survive, even for an instant. ||7||
ਹਮ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਨਿਰਗੁਨੀਆਰੇ ॥
ham aparaadhee niraguneeaare |
I am a sinner, without any virtue at all.
ਨਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਨਾ ਕਰਮਾਰੇ ॥
naa kichh sevaa naa karamaare |
I do not serve You, or do any good deeds.
ਗੁਰੁ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਮਿਲਿਆ ॥
gur bohith vaddabhaagee miliaa |
By great good fortune, I have found the boat - the Guru.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਥਰ ਤਰਿਆ ॥੮॥੨॥

Some pass their lives with their mothers, fathers and children.
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਰਾਜ ਮਿਲਖ ਵਾਪਾਰਾ ॥
kaahoo bihaavai raaj milakh vaapaaraa |
Some pass their lives in power, estates and trade.
ਸੰਤ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਅਧਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
sant bihaavai har naam adhaaraa |1|
The Saints pass their lives with the support of the Lord's Name. ||1||
ਰਚਨਾ ਸਾਚੁ ਬਨੀ ॥

The world is the creation of the True Lord.

Some pass their lives tasting flavors.
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਲਪਟਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
kaahoo bihaavai lapatt sang naaree |
Some pass their lives attached to women.
ਸੰਤ ਰਚੇ ਕੇਵਲ ਨਾਮ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥੨॥
sant rache keval naam muraaree |2|
The Saints are absorbed only in the Name of the Lord. ||2||
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਖੇਲਤ ਜੂਆ ॥
kaahoo bihaavai khelat jooaa |
Some pass their lives gambling.
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਅਮਲੀ ਹੂਆ ॥
kaahoo bihaavai amalee hooaa |
Some pass their lives getting drunk.
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਪਰ ਦਰਬ ਚੋੁਰਾਏ ॥
kaahoo bihaavai par darab chouraae |
Some pass their lives stealing the property of others.
ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਨਾਮ ਧਿਆਏ ॥੩॥
har jan bihaavai naam dhiaae |3|
The humble servants of the Lord pass their lives meditating on the Naam. ||3||
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਜੋਗ ਤਪ ਪੂਜਾ ॥
kaahoo bihaavai jog tap poojaa |
Some pass their lives in Yoga, strict meditation, worship and adoration.
ਕਾਹੂ ਰੋਗ ਸੋਗ ਭਰਮੀਜਾ ॥
kaahoo rog sog bharameejaa |
Some, in sickness, sorrow and doubt.
ਕਾਹੂ ਪਵਨ ਧਾਰ ਜਾਤ ਬਿਹਾਏ ॥
kaahoo pavan dhaar jaat bihaae |
Some pass their lives practicing control of the breath.
ਸੰਤ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗਾਏ ॥੪॥
sant bihaavai keeratan gaae |4|
The Saints pass their lives singing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises. ||4||
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਚਾਲਤ ॥
kaahoo bihaavai din rain chaalat |
Some pass their lives walking day and night.
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਪਿੜੁ ਮਾਲਤ ॥
kaahoo bihaavai so pirr maalat |
Some pass their lives on the fields of battle.
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਬਾਲ ਪੜਾਵਤ ॥
kaahoo bihaavai baal parraavat |
Some pass their lives teaching children.
ਸੰਤ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵਤ ॥੫॥
sant bihaavai har jas gaavat |5|
The Saints pass their lives singing the Lord's Praise. ||5||
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਨਟ ਨਾਟਿਕ ਨਿਰਤੇ ॥
kaahoo bihaavai natt naattik nirate |
Some pass their lives as actors, acting and dancing.
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਜੀਆਇਹ ਹਿਰਤੇ ॥
kaahoo bihaavai jeeaeih hirate |
Some pass their lives taking the lives of others.
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਰਾਜ ਮਹਿ ਡਰਤੇ ॥
kaahoo bihaavai raaj meh ddarate |
Some pass their lives ruling by intimidation.
ਸੰਤ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਕਰਤੇ ॥੬॥

The Saints pass their lives chanting the Lord's Praises. ||6||

Some pass their lives counseling and giving advice.
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਸੇਵਾ ਜਰੂਰਤਿ ॥
kaahoo bihaavai sevaa jaroorat |
Some pass their lives forced to serve others.
ਕਾਹੂ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਸੋਧਤ ਜੀਵਤ ॥
kaahoo bihaavai sodhat jeevat |
Some pass their lives exploring life's mysteries.
ਸੰਤ ਬਿਹਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਵਤ ॥੭॥

The Saints pass their lives drinking in the sublime essence of the Lord. ||7||
ਜਿਤੁ ਕੋ ਲਾਇਆ ਤਿਤ ਹੀ ਲਗਾਨਾ ॥
jit ko laaeaa tith hee lagaanaa |
As the Lord attaches us, so we are attached.
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਮੂੜੁ ਨਹੀ ਕੋ ਸਿਆਨਾ ॥
naa ko moorr nahee ko siaanaa |
No one is foolish, and no one is wise.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਨਾਉ ॥
kar kirapaa jis devai naau |
Nanak is a sacrifice, a sacrifice to those who are blessed
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਉ ॥੮॥੩॥
naanak taa kai bal bal jaau |8|3|
