ਸੁਤ ਬਾਲਕ ਤਰੁਨੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਤੈ ਤ︀ਯਾਗਤ ਸਭ ਸਾਜ ॥
sut baalak tarunee triyaa tai tayaagat sabh saaj |
‘You are leaving behind your offspring, son, and youthful wife,
ਸਭ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੀਯੋ ਕਸੂਤਿ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਕ︀ਯੋ ਕਰਿ ਰਹਸੀ ਰਾਜ ॥੩੪॥
sabh bidh keeyo kasoot grih kayo kar rahasee raaj |34|
‘You tell me, how your rule could continue.(34)
ਪੂਤ ਪਰੇ ਲੋਟਤ ਧਰਨਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਪਰੀ ਬਿਲਲਾਇ ॥
poot pare lottat dharan triyaa paree bilalaae |
Offspring are rolling around on the ground, wife is crying,
ਬੰਧੁ ਭ੍ਰਿਤ ਰੋਦਨ ਕਰੈ ਰਾਜ ਬੰਸ ਤੇ ਜਾਇ ॥੩੫॥
bandh bhrit rodan karai raaj bans te jaae |35|
‘The servants and the relatives are weeping, who will now rule over?’(35)

ਚੇਲੇ ਸਭੈ ਅਨੰਦਿਤ ਭਏ ॥
chele sabhai anandit bhe |
ਦੁਰਬਲ ਹੁਤੇ ਪੁਸਟ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਗਏ ॥
durabal hute pusatt hvai ge |
(On the other side) The disciples were getting very happy, and the weaklings were getting plump.
ਨਾਥ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਹਿ ਜੋਗੀ ਕਰਿ ਲਯੈ ਹੌ ॥
naath nripeh jogee kar layai hau |
ਦ੍ਵਾਰ ਦ੍ਵਾਰ ਕੇ ਟੂਕ ਮੰਗੈ ਹੈ ॥੩੬॥
dvaar dvaar ke ttook mangai hai |36|
(They were thinking) ‘Yogi, soon, will bring Raja along and send him for begging food from door to door.(36)

ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕਹ ਜੋਗੀ ਭੇਸ ਦੈ ਕਬ ਹੀ ਲਿਯੈ ਹੈ ਨਾਥ ॥
nrip keh jogee bhes dai kab hee liyai hai naath |
‘Raja must be coming wearing the garb of yogi and accompanying the Nath Yogi.’
ਯੌ ਮੂਰਖ ਜਾਨੈ ਨਹੀ ਕਹਾ ਭਈ ਤਿਹ ਸਾਥ ॥੩੭॥
yau moorakh jaanai nahee kahaa bhee tih saath |37|
But the fools did not know what had happened to the Yogi.(37)
ਸੁਤ ਬਾਲਕ ਤਰੁਨੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਕ︀ਯੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਛਾਡਤ ਮੋਹਿ ॥
sut baalak tarunee triyaa kayo nrip chhaaddat mohi |
The offspring, sons, young ladies and maid, all were begging Raja not to leave.
ਚੇਰੀ ਸਭ ਰੋਦਨ ਕਰੈ ਦਯਾ ਨ ਉਪਜਤ ਤੋਹਿ ॥੩੮॥
cheree sabh rodan karai dayaa na upajat tohi |38|
They all were crying and asking, ‘Why are you leaving us. Don’t you take pity on us?’(38)
ਸੁਨੁ ਰਾਨੀ ਤੋ ਸੋ ਕਹੋ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਗ︀ਯਾਨ ਕੋ ਭੇਦ ॥
sun raanee to so kaho braham gayaan ko bhed |
(Raja replied) ‘Listen, you the Ranis,
ਜੁ ਕਛੁ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਕਹਤ ਔਰ ਉਚਾਰਤ ਬੇਦ ॥੩੯॥
ju kachh saasatr sinmrit kehat aauar uchaarat bed |39|
I will tell you through the wisdom of Vedas.(39)

ਸੁਤ ਹਿਤ ਕੈ ਮਾਤਾ ਦੁਲਰਾਵੈ ॥

ਕਾਲ ਮੂਡ ਪਰ ਦਾਤ ਬਜਾਵੈ ॥
kaal moodd par daat bajaavai |
‘Mother is jovially making the child to play but the death is over shadowing.
ਵੁਹ ਨਿਤ ਲਖੇ ਪੂਤ ਬਢਿ ਜਾਵਤ ॥
vuh nit lakhe poot badt jaavat |
ਲੈਨ ਨ ਮੂੜ ਕਾਲ ਨਿਜਕਾਵਤ ॥੪੦॥
lain na moorr kaal nijakaavat |40|
‘She is happy to see the child growing but she does not envisage the death coming nearer and nearer.(40)

ਕੋ ਮਾਤਾ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਸੁਤਾ ਪਾਚ ਤਤ ਕੀ ਦੇਹ ॥
ko maataa banitaa sutaa paach tat kee deh |
‘What are mother, wife, and offspring? They are just the embodiment
ਦਿਵਸ ਚਾਰ ਕੋ ਪੇਖਨੋ ਅੰਤ ਖੇਹ ਕੀ ਖੇਹ ॥੪੧॥
divas chaar ko pekhano ant kheh kee kheh |41|
Of five elements, which at the end are bound to parish.(41)

ਪ੍ਰਾਨੀ ਜਨਮ ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਜਬ ਆਵੈ ॥

ਬਾਲਾਪਨ ਮੈ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਵੈ ॥
baalaapan mai janam gavaavai |
‘When a human being is born, he loses his childhood at the birth.
ਤਰੁਨਾਪਨ ਬਿਖਿਯਨ ਕੈ ਕੀਨੋ ॥
tarunaapan bikhiyan kai keeno |
ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਤਤੁ ਕੋ ਚੀਨੋ ॥੪੨॥
kabahu na braham tat ko cheeno |42|
‘During youth, he indulges in merry-makings and never tries to realise his roots.( 42)

ਬਿਰਧ ਭਏ ਤਨੁ ਕਾਪਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਪਿਯੋ ਜਾਇ ॥

‘When he gets old, his body starts shaking as he had not meditated on the Name,
ਬਿਨਾ ਭਜਨ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਕੇ ਪਾਪ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਤ ਤਨ ਆਇ ॥੪੩॥
binaa bhajan bhagavaan ke paap grihat tan aae |43|
‘And, being lacking the Godly prayer, the vices over powers him.(43)
ਮਿਰਤੁ ਲੋਕ ਮੈ ਆਇ ਕੈ ਬਾਲ ਬ੍ਰਿਧ ਕੋਊ ਹੋਇ ॥
mirat lok mai aae kai baal bridh koaoo hoe |
‘Reaching the domain of death, neither the sons, nor the old, the
ਊਚ ਨੀਚ ਰਾਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਜਾ ਜਿਯਤ ਨ ਰਹਸੀ ਕੋਇ ॥੪੪॥
aooch neech raajaa prajaa jiyat na rahasee koe |44|
High, the low, the rulers, the subject, attain emancipation.’(44)
ਰਾਨੀ ਐਸੇ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਿ ਭੂਮਿ ਪਰੀ ਮੁਰਛਾਇ ॥
raanee aise bachan sun bhoom paree murachhaae |
ਪੋਸਤਿਯਾ ਕੀ ਨੀਦ ਜ︀ਯੋਂ ਸੋਇ ਨ ਸੋਯੋ ਜਾਇ ॥੪੫॥
posatiyaa kee need jayon soe na soyo jaae |45|
ਜੋ ਉਪਜਿਯੋ ਸੋ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਹੈ ਜਗ ਰਹਿਬੋ ਦਿਨ ਚਾਰਿ ॥
jo upajiyo so binas hai jag rahibo din chaar |
Listening such talks, Rani became unconscious,
ਸੁਤ ਬਨਿਤਾ ਦਾਸੀ ਕਹਾ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੪੬॥
sut banitaa daasee kahaa dekhahu tat beechaar |46|
And was over powered by imperturbable sleep.(46)
ਰਾਮਕਲੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Raamkalee, First Mehl:
ਹਠੁ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਛੀਜੈ ॥
hatth nigrahu kar kaaeaa chheejai |
Practicing restraint by Hatha Yoga, the body wears away.
ਵਰਤੁ ਤਪਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
varat tapan kar man nahee bheejai |
The mind is not softened by fasting or austerities.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸਰਿ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਪੂਜੈ ॥੧॥
raam naam sar avar na poojai |1|
Nothing else is equal to worship of the Lord's Name. ||1||
ਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਮਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਸੰਗੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
gur sev manaa har jan sang keejai |
Serve the Guru, O mind, and associate with the humble servants of the Lord.
ਜਮੁ ਜੰਦਾਰੁ ਜੋਹਿ ਨਹੀ ਸਾਕੈ ਸਰਪਨਿ ਡਸਿ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jam jandaar johi nahee saakai sarapan ddas na sakai har kaa ras peejai |1| rahaau |
The tyrannical Messenger of Death cannot touch you, and the serpent of Maya cannot sting you, when you drink in the sublime essence of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਵਾਦੁ ਪੜੈ ਰਾਗੀ ਜਗੁ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
vaad parrai raagee jag bheejai |
The world reads the arguments, and is softened only by music.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥
trai gun bikhiaa janam mareejai |
In the three modes and corruption, they are born and die.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਖੁ ਸਹੀਜੈ ॥੨॥
raam naam bin dookh saheejai |2|
Without the Lord's Name, they endure suffering and pain. ||2||
ਚਾੜਸਿ ਪਵਨੁ ਸਿੰਘਾਸਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ॥
chaarras pavan singhaasan bheejai |
The Yogi draws the breath upwards, and opens the Tenth Gate.
ਨਿਉਲੀ ਕਰਮ ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
niaulee karam khatt karam kareejai |
He practices inner cleansing and the six rituals of purification.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਸਾਸੁ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੩॥
raam naam bin birathaa saas leejai |3|
But without the Lord's Name, the breath he draws is useless. ||3||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪੰਚ ਅਗਨਿ ਕਿਉ ਧੀਰਜੁ ਧੀਜੈ ॥
antar panch agan kiau dheeraj dheejai |
The fire of the five passions burns within him; how can he be calm?
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਚੋਰੁ ਕਿਉ ਸਾਦੁ ਲਹੀਜੈ ॥
antar chor kiau saad laheejai |
The thief is within him; how can he taste the taste?
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਇ ਕਾਇਆ ਗੜੁ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੪॥
guramukh hoe kaaeaa garr leejai |4|
One who becomes Gurmukh conquers the body-fortress. ||4||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਤੀਰਥ ਭਰਮੀਜੈ ॥
antar mail teerath bharameejai |
With filth within, he wanders around at places of pilgrimage.
ਮਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਸੂਚਾ ਕਿਆ ਸੋਚ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥
man nahee soochaa kiaa soch kareejai |
His mind is not pure, so what is the use of performing ritual cleansings?
ਕਿਰਤੁ ਪਇਆ ਦੋਸੁ ਕਾ ਕਉ ਦੀਜੈ ॥੫॥
kirat peaa dos kaa kau deejai |5|
He carries the karma of his own past actions; who else can he blame? ||5||
ਅੰਨੁ ਨ ਖਾਹਿ ਦੇਹੀ ਦੁਖੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
an na khaeh dehee dukh deejai |
He does not eat food; he tortures his body.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਥੀਜੈ ॥
bin gur giaan tripat nahee theejai |
Without the Guru's wisdom, he is not satisfied.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥੬॥
manamukh janamai janam mareejai |6|
The self-willed manmukh is born only to die, and be born again. ||6||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪੂਛਿ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਜਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
satigur poochh sangat jan keejai |
Go, and ask the True Guru, and associate with the Lord's humble servants.
ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਚੈ ਨਹੀ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥
man har raachai nahee janam mareejai |
Your mind shall merge into the Lord, and you shall not be reincarnated to die again.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਆ ਕਰਮੁ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੭॥
raam naam bin kiaa karam keejai |7|
Without the Lord's Name, what can anyone do? ||7||
ਊਂਦਰ ਦੂੰਦਰ ਪਾਸਿ ਧਰੀਜੈ ॥
aoondar doondar paas dhareejai |
Silence the mouse scurrying around within you.
ਧੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਰਵੀਜੈ ॥
dhur kee sevaa raam raveejai |
Serve the Primal Lord, by chanting the Lord's Name.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੮॥੫॥
naanak naam milai kirapaa prabh keejai |8|5|
O Nanak, God blesses us with His Name, when He grants His Grace. ||8||5||

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਉਤਭੁਜੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
antar utabhuj avar na koee |
The created Universe emanated from within You; there is no other at all.
ਜੋ ਕਹੀਐ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇ ਹੋਈ ॥
jo kaheeai so prabh te hoee |
Whatever is said to be, is from You, O God.
ਜੁਗਹ ਜੁਗੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸਚੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
jugah jugantar saahib sach soee |
He is the True Lord and Master, throughout the ages.
ਉਤਪਤਿ ਪਰਲਉ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥
autapat parlau avar na koee |1|
Creation and destruction do not come from anyone else. ||1||
ਐਸਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰੁ ॥
aisaa meraa tthaakur gahir ganbheer |
Such is my Lord and Master, profound and unfathomable.
ਜਿਨਿ ਜਪਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਹੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਜਮ ਤੀਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jin japiaa tin hee sukh paaeaa har kai naam na lagai jam teer |1| rahaau |
Whoever meditates on Him, finds peace. The arrow of the Messenger of Death does not strike one who has the Name of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਹੀਰਾ ਨਿਰਮੋਲੁ ॥
naam ratan heeraa niramol |
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is a priceless jewel, a diamond.
ਸਾਚਾ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਅਮਰੁ ਅਤੋਲੁ ॥
saachaa saahib amar atol |
The True Lord Master is immortal and immeasurable.
ਜਿਹਵਾ ਸੂਚੀ ਸਾਚਾ ਬੋਲੁ ॥
jihavaa soochee saachaa bol |
That tongue which chants the True Name is pure.
ਘਰਿ ਦਰਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਹੀ ਰੋਲੁ ॥੨॥
ghar dar saachaa naahee rol |2|
The True Lord is in the home of the self; there is no doubt about it. ||2||
ਇਕਿ ਬਨ ਮਹਿ ਬੈਸਹਿ ਡੂਗਰਿ ਅਸਥਾਨੁ ॥
eik ban meh baiseh ddoogar asathaan |
Some sit in the forests, and some make their home in the mountains.
ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਪਚਹਿ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
naam bisaar pacheh abhimaan |
Forgetting the Naam, they rot away in egotistical pride.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕਿਆ ਗਿਆਨ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥
naam binaa kiaa giaan dhiaan |
Without the Naam, what is the use of spiritual wisdom and meditation?
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਦਰਗਹਿ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੩॥
guramukh paaveh darageh maan |3|
The Gurmukhs are honored in the Court of the Lord. ||3||
ਹਠੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਕਰੈ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
hatth ahankaar karai nahee paavai |
Acting stubbornly in egotism, one does not find the Lord.
ਪਾਠ ਪੜੈ ਲੇ ਲੋਕ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥
paatth parrai le lok sunaavai |
Studying the scriptures, reading them to other people,
ਤੀਰਥਿ ਭਰਮਸਿ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
teerath bharamas biaadh na jaavai |
and wandering around at places of pilgrimage, the disease is not taken away.
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
naam binaa kaise sukh paavai |4|
Without the Naam, how can one find peace? ||4||
ਜਤਨ ਕਰੈ ਬਿੰਦੁ ਕਿਵੈ ਨ ਰਹਾਈ ॥
jatan karai bind kivai na rahaaee |
No matter how much he tries, he cannot control his semen and seed.
ਮਨੂਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਨਰਕੇ ਪਾਈ ॥
manooaa ddolai narake paaee |
His mind wavers, and he falls into hell.
ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਧੋ ਲਹੈ ਸਜਾਈ ॥
jam pur baadho lahai sajaaee |
Bound and gagged in the City of Death, he is tortured.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਜੀਉ ਜਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥੫॥
bin naavai jeeo jal bal jaaee |5|
Without the Name, his soul cries out in agony. ||5||
ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਕੇਤੇ ਮੁਨਿ ਦੇਵਾ ॥
sidh saadhik kete mun devaa |
The many Siddhas and seekers, silent sages and demi-gods
ਹਠਿ ਨਿਗ੍ਰਹਿ ਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵਹਿ ਭੇਵਾ ॥
hatth nigreh na tripataaveh bhevaa |
cannot satisfy themselves by practicing restraint through Hatha Yoga.
ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਗਹਹਿ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ॥
sabad veechaar gaheh gur sevaa |
One who contemplates the Word of the Shabad, and serves the Guru
ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ਅਭੇਵਾ ॥੬॥
man tan niramal abhimaan abhevaa |6|
- his mind and body become immaculate, and his egotistical pride is obliterated. ||6||
ਕਰਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਉ ॥
karam milai paavai sach naau |
Blessed with Your Grace, I obtain the True Name.
ਤੁਮ ਸਰਣਾਗਤਿ ਰਹਉ ਸੁਭਾਉ ॥
tum saranaagat rhau subhaau |
I remain in Your Sanctuary, in loving devotion.
ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਭਗਤੀ ਭਾਉ ॥
tum te upajio bhagatee bhaau |
Love for Your devotional worship has welled up within me.
ਜਪੁ ਜਾਪਉ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਉ ॥੭॥
jap jaapau guramukh har naau |7|
As Gurmukh, I chant and meditate on the Lord's Name. ||7||
ਹਉਮੈ ਗਰਬੁ ਜਾਇ ਮਨ ਭੀਨੈ ॥
haumai garab jaae man bheenai |
When one is rid of egotism and pride, his mind is drenched in the Lord's Love.
ਝੂਠਿ ਨ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਪਾਖੰਡਿ ਕੀਨੈ ॥
jhootth na paavas paakhandd keenai |
Practicing fraud and hypocrisy, he does not find God.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰਸਬਦ ਨਹੀ ਘਰੁ ਬਾਰੁ ॥
bin gurasabad nahee ghar baar |
Without the Word of the Guru's Shabad, he cannot find the Lord's Door.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੮॥੬॥
naanak guramukh tat beechaar |8|6|
O Nanak, the Gurmukh contemplates the essence of reality. ||8||6||
