ਘੋਰਾ ਕਹੂੰ ਭਯੋ ਕਹੂੰ ਹਾਥੀ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਕੈ ਗਯੋ ਕਹੂੰ ਪੰਛੀ ਰੂਪ ਲਯੋ ਕਹੂੰ ਫਲ ਫੂਲ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਹੈ ॥
ghoraa kahoon bhayo kahoon haathee hvai kai gayo kahoon panchhee roop layo kahoon fal fool rahiyo hai |
‘Sometimes He manifests in horses, sometimes in elephants, and sometimes in cows, ‘Sometimes He is there in birds and sometimes in flora,
ਪਾਵਕ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਦਹਿਯੋ ਕਹੂੰ ਪੌਨ ਰੂਪ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਕਹੂੰ ਚੀਤ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਕੈ ਗਹਿਯੋ ਕਹੂੰ ਪਾਨੀ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਕੈ ਬਹਿਯੋ ਹੈ ॥
paavak hvai dahiyo kahoon pauan roop kahiyo kahoon cheet hvai kai gahiyo kahoon paanee hvai kai bahiyo hai |
‘He burns in the shape of fire and then comes over as air, ‘Sometimes he dwells in the minds and sometimes flows in the shape of water.
ਅੰਬਰ ਉਤਾਰੇ ਰਾਵਨਾਦਿਕ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ਕਹੂੰ ਬਨ ਮੈ ਬਿਹਾਰੇ ਐਸੇ ਬੇਦਨ ਮੈ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਹੈ ॥
anbar utaare raavanaadik sanghaare kahoon ban mai bihaare aise bedan mai kahiyo hai |
‘Sometimes comes down from heaven to annihilate Rawana (devil), ‘In the jungles, which is described in Vedas too.
ਪੁਰਖ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਆਪੁ ਕਹੂੰ ਇਸਤ੍ਰਿਨ ਕੋ ਰੂਪ ਧਰਿਯੋ ਮੂਰਖਨ ਭੇਦ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਨੈਕ ਹੂੰ ਨ ਲਹਿਯੋ ਹੈ ॥੧੮॥
purakh hvai aap kahoon isatrin ko roop dhariyo moorakhan bhed taa ko naik hoon na lahiyo hai |18|
‘Somewhere He is a man and somewhere He takes the shape of woman. ‘Only the fools cannot perceive his mysteries.(18)

bhoolaa lok bharam beechaarai |
‘Whom does He kill and why, the innocent people cannot grasp.
ਯਹ ਨ ਮਰਤ ਮਾਰਤ ਹੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
yeh na marat maarat hai naahee |
ਯੌ ਰਾਜਾ ਸਮਝਹੁ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੧੯॥
yau raajaa samajhahu man maahee |19|
‘Neither He kills nor he dies, and you try to acquiesce this, Oh Raja.(19)

ਬਿਨਾ ਨਾਮ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਜਪੇ ਬਾਲ ਬ੍ਰਿਧ ਕੋਊ ਹੋਇ ॥

‘The old and the young, all should meditate on him,
ਰਾਵ ਰੰਕ ਰਾਜਾ ਸਭੈ ਜਿਯਤ ਨ ਰਹਸੀ ਕੋਇ ॥੨੦॥
raav rank raajaa sabhai jiyat na rahasee koe |20|
‘(Without his name) the rulers or the subject, nothing will remain.(20)

ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜੋ ਜਿਯ ਲਖਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
sat naam jo jiy lakh paavai |
ਤਾ ਕੇ ਕਾਲ ਨਿਕਟ ਨਹਿ ਆਵੈ ॥
taa ke kaal nikatt neh aavai |
‘Those who recognise Satnam, the angel of death comes not near them,
ਬਿਨਾ ਨਾਮ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਜੋ ਰਹਿ ਹੈ ॥
binaa naam taa ke jo reh hai |
ਬਨ ਗਿਰ ਪੁਰ ਮੰਦਰ ਸਭ ਢਹਿ ਹੈ ॥੨੧॥
ban gir pur mandar sabh dteh hai |21|
‘And without his Name all the jungles, mountains, mansions, and towns face destruction.(21)

ਚਕਿਯਾ ਕੈਸੇ ਪਟ ਬਨੇ ਗਗਨ ਭੂਮਿ ਪੁਨਿ ਦੋਇ ॥
chakiyaa kaise patt bane gagan bhoom pun doe |
‘The sky and the earth are like two grinding stones.
ਦੁਹੂੰ ਪੁਰਨ ਮੈ ਆਇ ਕੈ ਸਾਬਿਤ ਗਯਾ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥੨੨॥
duhoon puran mai aae kai saabit gayaa na koe |22|
‘Coming any thing in between is saved not.(22)

ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮ ਜੋ ਪੁਰਖ ਪਛਾਨੈ ॥
sat naam jo purakh pachhaanai |
ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮ ਲੈ ਬਚਨ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨੈ ॥
sat naam lai bachan pramaanai |
‘Those who accept Satnam, Satnam prevails in their eloquence.
ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਾਰਗ ਲੈ ਚਲਹੀ ॥
sat naam maarag lai chalahee |
ਤਾ ਕੋ ਕਾਲ ਨ ਕਬਹੂੰ ਦਲਹੀ ॥੨੩॥
taa ko kaal na kabahoon dalahee |23|
‘They proceed on the way of Satnam and the demons of death do not trouble them.’(23)

ਐਸੇ ਬਚਨਨ ਸੁਨਤ ਹੀ ਰਾਜਾ ਭਯੋ ਉਦਾਸੁ ॥
aise bachanan sunat hee raajaa bhayo udaas |
Listening to such exposition, Raja became depressed,
ਭੂਮਿ ਦਰਬੁ ਘਰ ਰਾਜ ਤੇ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਭਯੋ ਨਿਰਾਸੁ ॥੨੪॥
bhoom darab ghar raaj te chit mai bhayo niraas |24|
And was dejected with the temporal life, home, wealth, and sovereignty.(24)
ਜਬ ਰਾਨੀ ਐਸੇ ਸੁਨਿਯੋ ਦੁਖਤ ਭਈ ਮਨ ਮਾਹ ॥
jab raanee aise suniyo dukhat bhee man maah |
When the Rani heard all this, she felt afflicted,
ਦੇਸ ਦਰਬੁ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਛਾਡਿ ਕੈ ਜਾਤ ਲਖਿਯੋ ਨਰ ਨਾਹ ॥੨੫॥
des darab grih chhaadd kai jaat lakhiyo nar naah |25|
As she learnt that Raja was going away leaving the kingdom, wealth and the home.(25)
ਤਬ ਰਾਨੀ ਅਤਿ ਦੁਖਿਤ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਲਯੋ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥
tab raanee at dukhit hvai mantree layo bulaae |
When Rani was in extreme distress; she called in the Minister.
ਕ︀ਯੋਹੂੰ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਰਾਖਿਯੈ ਕੀਜੈ ਕਛੂ ਉਪਾਇ ॥੨੬॥
kayohoon nrip grih raakhiyai keejai kachhoo upaae |26|
She asked him to suggest her some resolve so that Raja could be kept at home.(26)

ਤਬ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਇਮਿ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਾਰੇ ॥
tab mantree im bachan uchaare |
ਸੁਨੁ ਰਾਨੀ ਤੈ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥
sun raanee tai mantr hamaare |
Then the minister suggested like this, ‘Rani, listen to your minister,
ਐਸੋ ਜਤਨ ਆਜੁ ਹਮ ਕਰਿ ਹੈ ॥
aiso jatan aaj ham kar hai |
ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਰਾਖਿ ਜੋਗਿਯਹਿ ਮਰਿ ਹੈ ॥੨੭॥
nrip grih raakh jogiyeh mar hai |27|
‘I will, today, proceed in such a way that I will keep the Raja at home and terminate the Yogi.(27)
ਰਾਨੀ ਜੋ ਹੌ ਕਹੌ ਸੁ ਕਰਿਯਹੁ ॥
raanee jo hau kahau su kariyahu |
ਰਾਜਾ ਜੂ ਤੇ ਨੈਕ ਨ ਡਰਿਯਹੁ ॥
raajaa joo te naik na ddariyahu |
‘Aye, Rani, you do what I say, and do not be afraid of Raja.
ਯਾ ਜੁਗਿਯਾ ਕਹ ਧਾਮ ਬੁਲੈਯਹੁ ॥
yaa jugiyaa keh dhaam bulaiyahu |
ਲੌਨ ਡਾਰਿ ਭੂਅ ਮਾਝ ਗਡੈਯਹੁ ॥੨੮॥
lauan ddaar bhooa maajh gaddaiyahu |28|
‘You call the Yogi at home, cover him with salt and bury him in the ground.’(28)

ਤਬ ਰਾਨੀ ਤਯੋ ਹੀ ਕਿਯੋ ਜੁਗਿਯਹਿ ਲਯੋ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥
tab raanee tayo hee kiyo jugiyeh layo bulaae |
The Rani acted accordingly and called the Yogi at home.
ਲੌਨ ਡਾਰਿ ਭੂਅ ਖੋਦਿ ਕੈ ਗਹਿ ਤਿਹ ਦਯੋ ਦਬਾਇ ॥੨੯॥
lauan ddaar bhooa khod kai geh tih dayo dabaae |29|
She caught him, smeared salt on him and buried him in the ground.(29)

ਜਾਇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਾਰੇ ॥
jaae nripat pat bachan uchaare |
ਜੁਗਿਯ ਮਾਟੀ ਲਈ ਤਿਹਾਰੇ ॥
jugiy maattee lee tihaare |
Then she approached Raja and told, ‘The Yogi has died,
ਮਰਤੀ ਬਾਰ ਬਚਨ ਯੌ ਕਹਿਯੋ ॥
maratee baar bachan yau kahiyo |
ਸੋ ਮੈ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਿਯ ਮਹਿ ਗਹਿਯੋ ॥੩੦॥
so mai drirr kar jiy meh gahiyo |30|
‘Whatever he pronounced at the time of his death, I am determined to carry on.(30)
ਮੋਰੀ ਕਹੀ ਭੂਪ ਸੌ ਕਹਿਯਹੁ ॥
moree kahee bhoop sau kahiyahu |
ਤੁਮ ਬੈਠੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਹੀ ਮੈ ਰਹਿਯਹੁ ॥
tum baitthe grih hee mai rahiyahu |
‘He told me to tell Raja that to stay at home,
ਇਨ ਰਾਨਿਨ ਕੌ ਤਾਪੁ ਨ ਦੀਜਹੁ ॥
ein raanin kau taap na deejahu |
ਰਾਜਿ ਜੋਗ ਦੋਨੋ ਹੀ ਕੀਜਹੁ ॥੩੧॥
raaj jog dono hee keejahu |31|
‘Not to keep the Ranis in adversity and not to abandon the kingship.(31)
ਪੁਨਿ ਮੋ ਸੋ ਇਕ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਾਰੋ ॥
pun mo so ik bachan uchaaro |
ਜੌ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਨ ਕਰੈ ਤਿਹਾਰੋ ॥
jau nrip kahiyo na karai tihaaro |
‘Then he told me that, if Raja refused to obey”
ਤਬ ਪਾਛੇ ਯਹ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਰਿਯਹੁ ॥
tab paachhe yeh bachan uchariyahu |
ਰਾਜਾ ਜੂ ਕੇ ਤਪ ਕਹ ਹਰਿਯਹੁ ॥੩੨॥
raajaa joo ke tap keh hariyahu |32|
‘Then, I should make clear to him that all the benefits of his meditation will be revoked.’(32)
ਜੋ ਤਿਨ ਕਹੀ ਸੁ ਪਾਛੇ ਕਹਿ ਹੌ ॥
jo tin kahee su paachhe keh hau |
ਤੁਮਰੇ ਸਕਲ ਭਰਮ ਕੋ ਦਹਿ ਹੌ ॥
tumare sakal bharam ko deh hau |
‘What else he told me, I will convey to you later on. First I will eradicate all your whims.
ਅਬ ਸੁਨਿ ਲੈ ਤੈ ਬਚਨ ਹਮਾਰੋ ॥
ab sun lai tai bachan hamaaro |
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਰਹਿ ਹੈ ਰਾਜ ਤਿਹਾਰੋ ॥੩੩॥
jaa te reh hai raaj tihaaro |33|
‘Now, if you acted upon what I communicated to you, your rule will continue.(33)
ਰਾਮਕਲੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Raamkalee, First Mehl:
ਸਾਹਾ ਗਣਹਿ ਨ ਕਰਹਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
saahaa ganeh na kareh beechaar |
You calculate the auspicious days, but you do not understand
ਸਾਹੇ ਊਪਰਿ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ॥
saahe aoopar ekankaar |
that the One Creator Lord is above these auspicious days.
ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
jis gur milai soee bidh jaanai |
He alone knows the way, who meets the Guru.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥੧॥
guramat hoe ta hukam pachhaanai |1|
When one follows the Guru's Teachings, then he realizes the Hukam of God's Command. ||1||
ਝੂਠੁ ਨ ਬੋਲਿ ਪਾਡੇ ਸਚੁ ਕਹੀਐ ॥
jhootth na bol paadde sach kaheeai |
Do not tell lies, O Pandit; O religious scholar, speak the Truth.
ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਸਬਦਿ ਘਰੁ ਲਹੀਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
haumai jaae sabad ghar laheeai |1| rahaau |
When egotism is eradicated through the Word of the Shabad, then one finds His home. ||1||Pause||
ਗਣਿ ਗਣਿ ਜੋਤਕੁ ਕਾਂਡੀ ਕੀਨੀ ॥
gan gan jotak kaanddee keenee |
Calculating and counting, the astrologer draws the horoscope.
ਪੜੈ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ਤਤੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੀ ॥
parrai sunaavai tat na cheenee |
He studies it and announces it, but he does not understand reality.
ਸਭਸੈ ਊਪਰਿ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
sabhasai aoopar gurasabad beechaar |
Understand, that the Word of the Guru's Shabad is above all.
ਹੋਰ ਕਥਨੀ ਬਦਉ ਨ ਸਗਲੀ ਛਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
hor kathanee bdau na sagalee chhaar |2|
Do not speak of anything else; it is all just ashes. ||2||
ਨਾਵਹਿ ਧੋਵਹਿ ਪੂਜਹਿ ਸੈਲਾ ॥
naaveh dhoveh poojeh sailaa |
You bathe, wash, and worship stones.
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਮੈਲੋ ਮੈਲਾ ॥
bin har raate mailo mailaa |
But without being imbued with the Lord, you are the filthiest of the filthy.
ਗਰਬੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸਾਰਥਿ ॥
garab nivaar milai prabh saarath |
Subduing your pride, you shall receive the supreme wealth of God.
ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਜਪਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਤਾਰਥਿ ॥੩॥
mukat praan jap har kirataarath |3|
The mortal is liberated and emancipated, meditating on the Lord. ||3||
ਵਾਚੈ ਵਾਦੁ ਨ ਬੇਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੈ ॥
vaachai vaad na bed beechaarai |
You study the arguments, but do not contemplate the Vedas.
ਆਪਿ ਡੁਬੈ ਕਿਉ ਪਿਤਰਾ ਤਾਰੈ ॥
aap ddubai kiau pitaraa taarai |
You drown yourself - how will you save your ancestors?
ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਚੀਨੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
ghatt ghatt braham cheenai jan koe |
How rare is that person who realizes that God is in each and every heart.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਇ ॥੪॥
satigur milai ta sojhee hoe |4|
When one meets the True Guru, then he understands. ||4||
ਗਣਤ ਗਣੀਐ ਸਹਸਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਜੀਐ ॥
ganat ganeeai sahasaa dukh jeeai |
Making his calculations, cynicism and suffering afflict his soul.
ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਵੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਥੀਐ ॥
gur kee saran pavai sukh theeai |
Seeking the Sanctuary of the Guru, peace is found.
ਕਰਿ ਅਪਰਾਧ ਸਰਣਿ ਹਮ ਆਇਆ ॥
kar aparaadh saran ham aaeaa |
I sinned and made mistakes, but now I seek Your Sanctuary.
ਗੁਰ ਹਰਿ ਭੇਟੇ ਪੁਰਬਿ ਕਮਾਇਆ ॥੫॥
gur har bhette purab kamaaeaa |5|
The Guru led me to meet the Lord, according to my past actions. ||5||
ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਿ ਨ ਆਈਐ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
gur saran na aaeeai braham na paaeeai |
If one does not enter the Guru's Sanctuary, God cannot be found.
ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈਐ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰਿ ਆਈਐ ॥
bharam bhulaaeeai janam mar aaeeai |
Deluded by doubt, one is born, only to die, and come back again.
ਜਮ ਦਰਿ ਬਾਧਉ ਮਰੈ ਬਿਕਾਰੁ ॥
jam dar baadhau marai bikaar |
Dying in corruption, he is bound and gagged at Death's door.
ਨਾ ਰਿਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਚਾਰੁ ॥੬॥
naa ridai naam na sabad achaar |6|
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is not in his heart, and he does not act according to the Shabad. ||6||
ਇਕਿ ਪਾਧੇ ਪੰਡਿਤ ਮਿਸਰ ਕਹਾਵਹਿ ॥
eik paadhe panddit misar kahaaveh |
Some call themselves Pandits, religious scholars and spiritual teachers.
ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਰਾਤੇ ਮਹਲੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਹਿ ॥
dubidhaa raate mehal na paaveh |
Tinged with double-mindedness, they do not find the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.
ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਅਧਾਰੁ ॥
jis gur parasaadee naam adhaar |
One who takes the Support of the Naam, by Guru's Grace,
ਕੋਟਿ ਮਧੇ ਕੋ ਜਨੁ ਆਪਾਰੁ ॥੭॥
kott madhe ko jan aapaar |7|
is a rare person, one among millions, incomparable. ||7||
ਏਕੁ ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਸਚੁ ਏਕੈ ॥
ek buraa bhalaa sach ekai |
One is bad, and another good, but the One True Lord is contained in all.
ਬੂਝੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਸਤਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਟੇਕੈ ॥
boojh giaanee satagur kee ttekai |
Understand this, O spiritual teacher, through the support of the True Guru:
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲੀ ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣਿਆ ॥
guramukh viralee eko jaaniaa |
rare indeed is that Gurmukh, who realizes the One Lord.
ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣਾ ਮੇਟਿ ਸਮਾਣਿਆ ॥੮॥
aavan jaanaa mett samaaniaa |8|
His comings and goings cease, and he merges in the Lord. ||8||
ਜਿਨ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਏਕੰਕਾਰੁ ॥
jin kai hiradai ekankaar |
Those who have the One Universal Creator Lord within their hearts,
ਸਰਬ ਗੁਣੀ ਸਾਚਾ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
sarab gunee saachaa beechaar |
possess all virtues; they contemplate the True Lord.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
gur kai bhaanai karam kamaavai |
One who acts in harmony with the Guru's Will,
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੯॥੪॥
naanak saache saach samaavai |9|4|
O Nanak, is absorbed in the Truest of the True. ||9||4||
