ਤਬ ਰਾਨੀ ਯੌ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਾਰੇ ॥

ਸੁਨਹੁ ਨਾਥ ਬਡਭਾਗ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥
sunahu naath baddabhaag hamaare |
Then Rani spoke, ‘Listen my master, we are very lucky,
ਬੂਡਿ ਕੋਊ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਹਿਤ ਮਰੈ ॥
boodd koaoo jaa ke hit marai |
ਮੋਰ ਮੂੰਡ ਅਪਜਸ ਬਹੁ ਧਰੈ ॥੧੦॥
mor moondd apajas bahu dharai |10|
‘No one should lay his life for this, otherwise a curse will remain in my conscious.’(10)

Rani had assigned one person in connection with (saving) the melon, (Who interceded,)
ਯਹ ਅਪਜਸ ਨ ਕਬਹੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਭਾਖਹਿ ਲੋਗ ਅਨੇਕ ॥੧੧॥
yeh apajas na kabahu mittai bhaakheh log anek |11|
‘Every body was expressing if it happens as such (that man is killed), then, this blot will ever be remembered.’(11)

ਆਪਹਿ ਦੈ ਤਰਬੂਜ ਤਰਾਯੋ ॥
aapeh dai tarabooj taraayo |
She, herself, had floated the melon, herself, infuriated Raja,
ਆਪਹਿ ਆਇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਹਿ ਰਿਸਵਾਯੋ ॥
aapeh aae nripeh risavaayo |
And, herself, she called various people.
ਆਪਹਿ ਹੋਰਿ ਮਨੁਛਨ ਲੀਨਾ ॥
aapeh hor manuchhan leenaa |
ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਨ ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਚੀਨਾ ॥੧੨॥

ek takhaan ujain mai bibichaaran tih naar |
There lived a carpenter in Ujain, whose wife conducted a vile Chritar.
ਤਾ ਸੋ ਕਰਿਯੋ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਤਿਨ ਸੋ ਤੁਹਿ ਕਹੌ ਸੁਧਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
taa so kariyo charitr tin so tuhi kahau sudhaar |1|
Now I am going to narrated you that with a few amends.(1)

ਸੁਮਤਿ ਬਾਢਿਯਹਿ ਤਬੈ ਉਚਾਰੋ ॥
sumat baadtiyeh tabai uchaaro |
ਸੁਨੁ ਗੀਗੋ ਤੈ ਬਚਨ ਹਮਾਰੋ ॥
sun geego tai bachan hamaaro |
The carpenter, named Sumat asked one day, ‘Gigo (the wife), listen what I have to say.
ਹੌ ਅਬ ਹੀ ਪਰਦੇਸ ਸਿਧੈਹੌਂ ॥
hau ab hee parades sidhaihauan |
ਖਾਟਿ ਕਮਾਇ ਤੁਮੈ ਧਨੁ ਲਯੈਹੌਂ ॥੨॥
khaatt kamaae tumai dhan layaihauan |2|
I am going abroad, and will come back after earning lot of money.’(2)
ਯੌ ਕਹਿ ਕੈ ਪਰਦੇਸ ਸਿਧਾਰੋ ॥
yau keh kai parades sidhaaro |
ਖਾਟ ਤਰੇ ਛਪਿ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਬਿਚਾਰੋ ॥
khaatt tare chhap rahiyo bichaaro |
Saying so, presumably he went abroad, but, as a matter of fact, he hid himself under the bed.
ਤਬ ਬਾਢਿਨ ਇਕ ਜਾਰ ਬੁਲਾਯੋ ॥
tab baadtin ik jaar bulaayo |
ਕਾਮਕੇਲ ਤਿਹ ਸਾਥ ਕਮਾਯੋ ॥੩॥
kaamakel tih saath kamaayo |3|
Then lady-carpenter called her paramour and revelled in making love with him.(3)
ਕਾਮਕੇਲ ਤਾ ਸੌ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਮਾਨ︀ਯੋ ॥
kaamakel taa sau triy maanayo |
ਖਾਟ ਤਰੇ ਨਿਜੁ ਪਤਿਹਿ ਪਛਾਨ︀ਯੋ ॥
khaatt tare nij patihi pachhaanayo |
While having sex-play, she discovered her husband lying under the bed.
ਸਭ ਅੰਗਨ ਬਿਹਬਲ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਗਈ ॥
sabh angan bihabal hvai gee |
ਚਿਤ ਕੇ ਬਿਖੈ ਦੁਖਿਤ ਅਤਿ ਭਈ ॥੪॥
chit ke bikhai dukhit at bhee |4|
Her whole body started to ache and felt much remorse at heart.(4)
ਤਬ ਤਾ ਸੌ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਾਰੇ ॥
tab taa sau triy bachan uchaare |
ਮੁਹਿ ਕਾ ਕਰਤ ਦਈ ਕੇ ਮਾਰੇ ॥
muhi kaa karat dee ke maare |
Then the woman said to her lover, ‘Oh, my Lord what are you doing.
ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਨਾਥ ਮੇਰੇ ਘਰ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
praan naath mere ghar naahee |
ਹੌ ਜਿਹ ਬਸਤ ਬਾਹ ਕੀ ਛਾਹੀ ॥੫॥
hau jih basat baah kee chhaahee |5|
‘My Master is not at home; only under his protection I can outlive.(5)

ਨਿਤਿ ਅੰਸੂਆ ਆਖਿਨ ਭਰੌਂ ਰਹੋਂ ਮਲੀਨੇ ਭੇਸ ॥
nit ansooaa aakhin bharauan rahon maleene bhes |
‘With tears in my eyes, I always remain in menial dress.
ਪੌਰ ਲਗੇ ਬਿਹਰੌ ਨਹੀਂ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਨਾਥ ਪਰਦੇਸ ॥੬॥
pauar lage biharau naheen praan naath parades |6|
My master being gone abroad, I never take a step out side the house.(6)
ਲਗਤ ਬੀਰਿਯਾ ਬਾਨ ਸੀ ਬਿਖੁ ਸੋ ਲਗਤ ਅਨਾਜ ॥
lagat beeriyaa baan see bikh so lagat anaaj |
‘Beetle-leaves and bird (cigarettes) hit me like the arrows, and the food
ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਨਾਥ ਪਰਦੇਸ ਗੇ ਤਾ ਬਿਨ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਸਾਜ ॥੭॥
praan naath parades ge taa bin kachhoo na saaj |7|
When husband is abroad, nothing savours me.(7)
ਬਾਢੀ ਐਸੇ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਿ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਭਯੋ ਖੁਸਾਲ ॥
baadtee aise bachan sun man mai bhayo khusaal |
Listening to such praise, he (the husband) was much pleased,
ਜਾਰ ਸਹਿਤ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਖਾਟ ਲੈ ਨਾਚਿ ਉਠਿਯੋ ਤਤਕਾਲ ॥੮॥
jaar sahit triy khaatt lai naach utthiyo tatakaal |8|
And carrying the bed on his head he started to dance.(8)(1)

The name of a Shah of Benares was Bishan Datt.
ਬਿਸ੍ਵ ਮਤੀ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਧਨ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਬਹੁ ਧਾਮ ॥੧॥
bisv matee taa kee triyaa dhan jaa ko bahu dhaam |1|
He had lot of wealth; Bisva Mati was his wife.(1)

Sing the songs of Praise of the Lord.
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਪਰਮ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਆਵਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਮਿਟੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਮੀਤ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
naam japat param sukh paaeeai aavaa gaun mittai mere meet |1| rahaau |
Chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, total peace is obtained; coming and going is ended, my friend. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਤ ਹੋਵਤ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥
gun gaavat hovat paragaas |
Singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, one is enlightened,
ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੧॥
charan kamal meh hoe nivaas |1|
and comes to dwell in His lotus feet. ||1||
ਸੰਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਉਧਾਰੁ ॥
santasangat meh hoe udhaar |
In the Society of the Saints, one is saved.
ਨਾਨਕ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਉਤਰਸਿ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੨॥੧॥੫੭॥

O Nanak, he crosses over the terrifying world-ocean. ||2||1||57||

My Guru is perfect, my Guru is perfect.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਹੇਲੇ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਨਾਸੇ ਰੋਗ ਕੂਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
raam naam jap sadaa suhele sagal binaase rog kooraa |1| rahaau |
Chanting the Lord's Name, I am always at peace; all my illness and fraud is dispelled. ||1||Pause||
ਏਕੁ ਅਰਾਧਹੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਸੋਇ ॥
ek araadhahu saachaa soe |
Worship and adore that One Lord alone.
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਸਰਨਿ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
jaa kee saran sadaa sukh hoe |1|
In His Sanctuary, eternal peace is obtained. ||1||
ਨੀਦ ਸੁਹੇਲੀ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਲਾਗੀ ਭੂਖ ॥
need suhelee naam kee laagee bhookh |
One who feels hunger for the Naam sleeps in peace.
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਸਭ ਦੂਖ ॥੨॥
har simarat binase sabh dookh |2|
Meditating in remembrance on the Lord, all pains are dispelled. ||2||
ਸਹਜਿ ਅਨੰਦ ਕਰਹੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
sehaj anand karahu mere bhaaee |
Enjoy celestial bliss, O my Siblings of Destiny.
ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਭ ਚਿੰਤ ਮਿਟਾਈ ॥੩॥
gur poorai sabh chint mittaaee |3|
The Perfect Guru has eradicated all anxiety. ||3||
ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਾ ਜਪੁ ਜਾਪਿ ॥
aatth pehar prabh kaa jap jaap |
Twenty-four hours a day, chant God's Chant.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਖਾ ਹੋਆ ਆਪਿ ॥੪॥੨॥੫੮॥
naanak raakhaa hoaa aap |4|2|58|
O Nanak, He Himself shall save you. ||4||2||58||

jalan thalan basudh gagan ek ekankaaran |1| rahaau |
The One, the One and Only Creator Lord permeates the water, the land, the earth and the sky. ||1||Pause||
ਹਰਨ ਧਰਨ ਪੁਨ ਪੁਨਹ ਕਰਨ ॥
haran dharan pun punah karan |
Over and over again, the Creator Lord destroys, sustains and creates.
ਨਹ ਗਿਰਹ ਨਿਰੰਹਾਰੰ ॥੧॥
neh girah niranhaaran |1|
He has no home; He needs no nourishment. ||1||
ਗੰਭੀਰ ਧੀਰ ਨਾਮ ਹੀਰ ਊਚ ਮੂਚ ਅਪਾਰੰ ॥
ganbheer dheer naam heer aooch mooch apaaran |
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is deep and profound, strong, poised, lofty, exalted and infinite.
ਕਰਨ ਕੇਲ ਗੁਣ ਅਮੋਲ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੰ ॥੨॥੧॥੫੯॥
karan kel gun amol naanak balihaaran |2|1|59|
He stages His plays; His Virtues are priceless. Nanak is a sacrifice to Him. ||2||1||59||

ਰੂਪ ਰੰਗ ਸੁਗੰਧ ਭੋਗ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਚਲੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਛਲੇ ਕਨਿਕ ਕਾਮਿਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
roop rang sugandh bhog tiaag chale maaeaa chhale kanik kaaminee |1| rahaau |
You must abandon your beauty, pleasures, fragrances and enjoyments; beguiled by gold and sexual desire, you must still leave Maya behind. ||1||Pause||
ਭੰਡਾਰ ਦਰਬ ਅਰਬ ਖਰਬ ਪੇਖਿ ਲੀਲਾ ਮਨੁ ਸਧਾਰੈ ॥
bhanddaar darab arab kharab pekh leelaa man sadhaarai |
You gaze upon billions and trillions of treasures and riches, which delight and comfort your mind,
ਨਹ ਸੰਗਿ ਗਾਮਨੀ ॥੧॥
neh sang gaamanee |1|
but these will not go along with you. ||1||
ਸੁਤ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਮੀਤ ਉਰਝਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਭਰਮਿ ਮੋਹਿਓ ਇਹ ਬਿਰਖ ਛਾਮਨੀ ॥
sut kalatr bhraat meet urajh pario bharam mohio ih birakh chhaamanee |
Entangled with children, spouse, siblings and friends, you are enticed and fooled; these pass like the shadow of a tree.
ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਸਰਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਖੁ ਸੰਤ ਭਾਵਨੀ ॥੨॥੨॥੬੦॥

Nanak seeks the Sanctuary of His lotus feet; He has found peace in the faith of the Saints. ||2||2||60||

re man ott lehu har naamaa |
O mind, take the sheltering support of the Lord's Name.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਮਰਨਿ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਸੈ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਪਦੁ ਨਿਰਬਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaa kai simaran duramat naasai paaveh pad nirabaanaa |1| rahaau |
Remembering Him in meditation, evil-mindedness is dispelled, and the state of Nirvaanaa is obtained. ||1||Pause||
ਬਡਭਾਗੀ ਤਿਹ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਜਾਨਹੁ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
baddabhaagee tih jan kau jaanahu jo har ke gun gaavai |
Know that one who sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord is very fortunate.
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਪਾਪ ਖੋਇ ਕੈ ਫੁਨਿ ਬੈਕੁੰਠਿ ਸਿਧਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
janam janam ke paap khoe kai fun baikuntth sidhaavai |1|
The sins of countless incarnations are washed off, and he attains the heavenly realm. ||1||
ਅਜਾਮਲ ਕਉ ਅੰਤ ਕਾਲ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਰਾਇਨ ਸੁਧਿ ਆਈ ॥
ajaamal kau ant kaal meh naaraaein sudh aaee |
At the very last moment, Ajaamal became aware of the Lord;
ਜਾਂ ਗਤਿ ਕਉ ਜੋਗੀਸੁਰ ਬਾਛਤ ਸੋ ਗਤਿ ਛਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੨॥
jaan gat kau jogeesur baachhat so gat chhin meh paaee |2|
that state which even the supreme Yogis desire - he attained that state in an instant. ||2||
ਨਾਹਿਨ ਗੁਨੁ ਨਾਹਿਨ ਕਛੁ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਉਨੁ ਗਜਿ ਕੀਨਾ ॥
naahin gun naahin kachh bidiaa dharam kaun gaj keenaa |
The elephant had no virtue and no knowledge; what religious rituals has he performed?
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਰਦੁ ਰਾਮ ਕਾ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਅਭੈ ਦਾਨੁ ਤਿਹ ਦੀਨਾ ॥੩॥੧॥
naanak birad raam kaa dekhahu abhai daan tih deenaa |3|1|
O Nanak, behold the way of the Lord, who bestowed the gift of fearlessness. ||3||1||
