ਛੋਰਿ ਦ੍ਵਾਰੋ ਪਾਛਲੋ ਭਾਜ ਗਏ ਤਤਕਾਲ ॥
chhor dvaaro paachhalo bhaaj ge tatakaal |
Leaving his companion at the doorstep, he quickly ran away.
ਸਭ ਰੁਪਯਨ ਹਰ ਲੈ ਗਏ ਬਨਿਯਾ ਭਏ ਬਿਹਾਲ ॥੯॥
sabh rupayan har lai ge baniyaa bhe bihaal |9|
He swindled all the rupees and the Shah was very much distressed.(9)(1)

ਮੁਗਲ ਏਕ ਗਜਨੀ ਰਹੈ ਬਖਤਿਯਾਰ ਤਿਹ ਨਾਮ ॥
mugal ek gajanee rahai bakhatiyaar tih naam |
A Mughal used to live in Ghazni and his name was Mukhtiyar.
ਬਡੇ ਸਦਨ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਬਨੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਗਾਠਿ ਮੈ ਦਾਮ ॥੧॥
badde sadan taa ke bane bahut gaatth mai daam |1|
He had palatial houses and possessed lot of wealth.(1)
ਤਾ ਕੇ ਘਰ ਇਕ ਹਯ ਹੁਤੋ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਚੋਰ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ॥
taa ke ghar ik hay huto taa ko chor nihaar |
He had a horse, which a thief came to observe.
ਯਾ ਕੋ ਕ︀ਯੋ ਹੂੰ ਚੋਰਿਯੈ ਕਛੂ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਸੁ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
yaa ko kayo hoon choriyai kachhoo charitr su dhaar |2|
He (the thief) contemplated how to steal that?(2)
ਆਨਿ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਕੀ ਕਰੀ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਧਾਮ ਤਲਾਸ ॥
aan chaakaree kee karee taa ke dhaam talaas |
He came and asked for a job in the Mughal’s house.
ਮੁਗਲ ਮਹੀਨਾ ਕੈ ਤੁਰਤ ਚਾਕਰ ਕੀਨੋ ਤਾਸ ॥੩॥
mugal maheenaa kai turat chaakar keeno taas |3|
The Mughal immediately engaged him on monthly terms.(3)

ਮਹਿਯਾਨਾ ਅਪਨੋ ਕਰਵਾਯੋ ॥
mahiyaanaa apano karavaayo |
ਕਰਜਾਈ ਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥
karajaaee ko naam sunaayo |
He got a monthly salary’s deed written, and, thus, made the Mughal as his debtor.
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਕੋ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਿਯੋ ॥
taa kee sevaa ko bahu kariyo |
ਬਖਤਿਯਾਰ ਕੋ ਧਨੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿਯੋ ॥੪॥
bakhatiyaar ko dhan hai hariyo |4|
He rendered his services and, then, stole the pay-role of the cashier.(4)

ਦਿਨ ਕੋ ਧਨੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਚਲ︀ਯੋ ਕਰਜਾਈ ਕਹਲਾਇ ॥
din ko dhan hai har chalayo karajaaee kahalaae |
(Now, as the Mughal was left with no money and could not pay his wages) He declared that he (Mughal) was his debtor.
ਸਕਲ ਲੋਕ ਠਟਕੇ ਰਹੈ ਰੈਨਾਈ ਲਖਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੫॥
sakal lok tthattake rahai rainaaee lakh paae |5|
He put the people into astonishment, took the horse and went away.(5)

ਪਾਛੇ ਮੁਗਲ ਪੀਟਤੋ ਆਯੋ ॥
paachhe mugal peettato aayo |
ਕਰਜਾਈ ਧਨੁ ਤੁਰਾ ਚੁਰਾਯੋ ॥
karajaaee dhan turaa churaayo |
The Mughal was distressed and disclosed that the debtor had taken away all his wealth.
ਜੋ ਇਹ ਬੈਨਨ ਕੋ ਸੁਨਿ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
jo ih bainan ko sun paavai |
ਤਾ ਹੀ ਕੋ ਝੂਠੋ ਠਹਰਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
taa hee ko jhoottho tthaharaavai |6|
Who-so-ever listened, made fun of him considering him a liar (and told him).(6)
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਦਰਬੁ ਕਰਜੁ ਲੈ ਖਾਯੋ ॥
jaa te darab karaj lai khaayo |
ਕਹਾ ਭਯੋ ਤਿਨ ਤੁਰਾ ਚੁਰਾਯੋ ॥
kahaa bhayo tin turaa churaayo |
‘If you had borrowed money from some one, how could he steal from you?
ਕ︀ਯੋਨ ਤੈ ਦਰਬੁ ਉਧਾਰੋ ਲਯੋ ॥
kayon tai darab udhaaro layo |
ਕਹਾ ਭਯੋ ਜੋ ਹੈ ਲੈ ਗਯੋ ॥੭॥
kahaa bhayo jo hai lai gayo |7|
‘Why had you taken loan from him? What, then, if he has taken your horses in lieu (of his money).’

ਵਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਝੂਠਾ ਕਿਯੋ ਭੇਦ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
vaahee ko jhootthaa kiyo bhed na paavai koe |
Every body called him a liar without understanding the secret.
ਵਹ ਦਿਨ ਧਨ ਹੈ ਹਰ ਗਯੋ ਰਾਮ ਕਰੈ ਸੋ ਹਇ ॥੮॥
veh din dhan hai har gayo raam karai so he |8|
Each day is auspicious and it happens the way Lord God wills.(8)(1)

ਪੁਨਿ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਐਸੇ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸੁਨਿਯੈ ਕਥਾ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ॥
pun mantree aise kahiyo suniyai kathaa nripaal |
Then the Minister said, ‘Listen to another story, my Raja.’
ਤੇਹੀ ਚੋਰ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਇਕ ਕਿਯੋ ਸੁ ਕਹੋ ਉਤਾਲ ॥੧॥
tehee chor charitr ik kiyo su kaho utaal |1|
‘The same thief played another trick which I tell you now.(1)

ਜਬ ਤਸਕਰ ਧਨੁ ਤੁਰਾ ਚੁਰਾਯੋ ॥
jab tasakar dhan turaa churaayo |
ਪੁਨਿ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਯੌ ਆਯੋ ॥
pun taa ke chit mai yau aayo |
When he had stolen the wealth, another thought came into his mind,
ਅਤਿਭੁਤ ਏਕ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਨੈਯੇ ॥
atibhut ek charitr banaiye |
ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਸੁੰਦਰਿ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਪੈਯੈ ॥੨॥
triy sundar jaa te grih paiyai |2|
‘Why not play one more trick through which a pretty woman could be possessed.’(2)

ਧਾਮ ਜਵਾਈ ਆਪਨੋ ਰਾਖ︀ਯੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਨਾਇ ॥
dhaam javaaee aapano raakhayo naam banaae |
He assigned himself a name, ghar-jawai, the live-in son-in-law,
ਬਿਧਵਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੇ ਧਾਮ ਮੈ ਡੇਰਾ ਕੀਨੋ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥
bidhavaa triy ke dhaam mai dderaa keeno jaae |3|
And came and started to dwell with a widow.(3)

ਵਾ ਕੇ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਅਨੰਦਿਤ ਭਯੋ ॥
vaa ke hridai anandit bhayo |
She was very happy that God has bestowed her with a son,
ਮੋਰੇ ਧਾਮ ਪੂਤ ਬਿਧਿ ਦਯੋ ॥
more dhaam poot bidh dayo |
ਧਾਮ ਜਵਾਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਤਾਯੋ ॥
dhaam javaaee naam jataayo |
Whose name was Ghar-jawai; she served him dainty foods.(4)
ਆਦਰੁ ਕੈ ਭੋਜਨਹਿ ਖਵਾਯੋ ॥੪॥
aadar kai bhojaneh khavaayo |4|
ਰਾਮਕਲੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Raamkalee, Fifth Mehl:
ਨਾ ਤਨੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾ ਮਨੁ ਤੋਹਿ ॥
naa tan teraa naa man tohi |
Neither your body nor your mind belong to you.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਬਿਆਪਿਆ ਧੋਹਿ ॥
maaeaa mohi biaapiaa dhohi |
Attached to Maya, you are entangled in fraud.
ਕੁਦਮ ਕਰੈ ਗਾਡਰ ਜਿਉ ਛੇਲ ॥
kudam karai gaaddar jiau chhel |
You play like a baby lamb.
ਅਚਿੰਤੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਚਕ੍ਰੁ ਪੇਲ ॥੧॥
achint jaal kaal chakru pel |1|
But suddenly, Death will catch you in its noose. ||1||
ਹਰਿ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਸਰਨਾਇ ਮਨਾ ॥
har charan kamal saranaae manaa |
Seek the Sanctuary of the Lord's lotus feet, O my mind.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਹਾਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਧਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
raam naam jap sang sahaaee guramukh paaveh saach dhanaa |1| rahaau |
Chant the Name of the Lord, which will be your help and support. As Gurmukh, you shall obtain the true wealth. ||1||Pause||
ਊਨੇ ਕਾਜ ਨ ਹੋਵਤ ਪੂਰੇ ॥
aoone kaaj na hovat poore |
Your unfinished worldly affairs will never be resolved.
ਕਾਮਿ ਕ੍ਰੋਧਿ ਮਦਿ ਸਦ ਹੀ ਝੂਰੇ ॥
kaam krodh mad sad hee jhoore |
You shall always regret your sexual desire, anger and pride.
ਕਰੈ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਜੀਅਰੇ ਕੈ ਤਾਈ ॥
karai bikaar jeeare kai taaee |
You act in corruption in order to survive,
ਗਾਫਲ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਤਸੂਆ ਜਾਈ ॥੨॥
gaafal sang na tasooaa jaaee |2|
but not even an iota will go along with you, you ignorant fool! ||2||
ਧਰਤ ਧੋਹ ਅਨਿਕ ਛਲ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
dharat dhoh anik chhal jaanai |
You practice deception, and you know many tricks;
ਕਉਡੀ ਕਉਡੀ ਕਉ ਖਾਕੁ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਾਨੈ ॥
kauddee kauddee kau khaak sir chhaanai |
for the sake of mere shells, you throw dust upon your head.
ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਆ ਤਿਸੈ ਨ ਚੇਤੈ ਮੂਲਿ ॥
jin deea tisai na chetai mool |
You never even think of the One who gave you life.
ਮਿਥਿਆ ਲੋਭੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਸੂਲੁ ॥੩॥
mithiaa lobh na utarai sool |3|
The pain of false greed never leaves you. ||3||
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਜਬ ਭਏ ਦਇਆਲ ॥
paarabraham jab bhe deaal |
When the Supreme Lord God becomes merciful,
ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਹੋਆ ਸਾਧ ਰਵਾਲ ॥
eihu man hoaa saadh ravaal |
this mind becomes the dust of the feet of the Holy.
ਹਸਤ ਕਮਲ ਲੜਿ ਲੀਨੋ ਲਾਇ ॥
hasat kamal larr leeno laae |
With His lotus hands, He has attached us to the hem of His robe.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਚੈ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੪॥੪੧॥੫੨॥
naanak saachai saach samaae |4|41|52|
Nanak merges in the Truest of the True. ||4||41||52||

Raamkalee, Fifth Mehl:
ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਮ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥
raajaa raam kee saranaae |
I seek the Sanctuary of the Sovereign Lord.
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਭਏ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
nirbhau bhe gobind gun gaavat saadhasang dukh jaae |1| rahaau |
I have become fearless, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe. In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, my pains have been taken away. ||1||Pause||
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਬਸੈ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
jaa kai raam basai man maahee |
That person, within whose mind the Lord abides,
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਦੁਤਰੁ ਪੇਖਤ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
so jan dutar pekhat naahee |
does not see the impassible world-ocean.
ਸਗਲੇ ਕਾਜ ਸਵਾਰੇ ਅਪਨੇ ॥
sagale kaaj savaare apane |
All one's affairs are resolved,
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਸਨ ਨਿਤ ਜਪਨੇ ॥੧॥
har har naam rasan nit japane |1|
by chanting continually the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||
ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਹਾਥੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਧਰੈ ॥
jis kai masatak haath gur dharai |
Why should His slave feel any anxiety?
ਸੋ ਦਾਸੁ ਅਦੇਸਾ ਕਾਹੇ ਕਰੈ ॥
so daas adesaa kaahe karai |
The Guru places His hand upon my forehead.
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਕੀ ਚੂਕੀ ਕਾਣਿ ॥
janam maran kee chookee kaan |
The fear of birth and death is dispelled;
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਊਪਰਿ ਕੁਰਬਾਣ ॥੨॥
poore gur aoopar kurabaan |2|
I am a sacrifice to the Perfect Guru. ||2||
ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰੁ ਭੇਟਿ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥
gur paramesar bhett nihaal |
I am enraptured, meeting with the Guru, the Transcendent Lord.
ਸੋ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਏ ਜਿਸੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ॥
so darasan paae jis hoe deaal |
He alone obtains the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan, who is blessed by His Mercy.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੈ ॥
paarabraham jis kirapaa karai |
One who is blessed by the Grace of the Supreme Lord God,
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਸੋ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਤਰੈ ॥੩॥
saadhasang so bhavajal tarai |3|
crosses over the terrifying world-ocean in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy. ||3||
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵਹੁ ਸਾਧ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
amrit peevahu saadh piaare |
Drink in the Ambrosial Nectar, O Beloved Holy people.
ਮੁਖ ਊਜਲ ਸਾਚੈ ਦਰਬਾਰੇ ॥
mukh aoojal saachai darabaare |
Your face shall be radiant and bright in the Court of the Lord.
ਅਨਦ ਕਰਹੁ ਤਜਿ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥
anad karahu taj sagal bikaar |
Celebrate and be blissful, and abandon all corruption.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਉਤਰਹੁ ਪਾਰਿ ॥੪॥੪੨॥੫੩॥
naanak har jap utarahu paar |4|42|53|
O Nanak, meditate on the Lord and cross over. ||4||42||53||
