ਇਹੀ ਕੋਟ ਕੇ ਦ੍ਵਾਰ ਮੈ ਬਸਿਯਹੁ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
eihee kott ke dvaar mai basiyahu bhoopat jaae |
‘And at his very gate, Raja would take his seat,
ਦੇਹਿ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਕੀ ਤ︀ਯਾਗ ਕੈ ਦੇਹ ਰੰਕ ਕੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੧੧॥
dehi nripat kee tayaag kai deh rank kee paae |11|
After casting off his Kingship, he would become a pauper.’(11)
ਤਬ ਰਾਜੈ ਤਾ ਸੋ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਹੈ ਕਬੈ ਉਧਾਰ ॥
tab raajai taa so kahiyo hvai hai kabai udhaar |
ਜੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸੋ ਦਿਜਬਰ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸੋ ਮੈ ਕਹੌ ਸੁਧਾਰ ॥੧੨॥

ਕਛੁ ਦਿਨ ਦੁਰਗ ਦ੍ਵਾਰ ਮੋ ਰਹਿ ਹੋ ॥
kachh din durag dvaar mo reh ho |
ਅਤਿ ਦੁਖ ਦੇਹ ਆਪਨੀ ਲਹਿ ਹੋ ॥
at dukh deh aapanee leh ho |
(‘The priest had told Raja,) “You would stay at the gate for a few days and try to tolerate the distress
ਖੋਜਤ ਤਬ ਰਾਨੀ ਹ︀ਯਾਂ ਐਹੈ ॥
khojat tab raanee hayaan aihai |
ਤੁਮ ਕੋ ਰਾਜ ਆਪਨੋ ਦੈ ਹੈ ॥੧੩॥
tum ko raaj aapano dai hai |13|
“One day Rani will come and let you have the Kingdom.(13)

ਰਾਜ ਵੈਸ ਹੀ ਕਰੈਗੋ ਰੂਪ ਨ ਵੈਸਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
raaj vais hee karaigo roop na vaisaa hoe |
“You will rule the same way, although your presentation will be different.”
ਜ︀ਯੋ ਰਾਜਾ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਮੂਏ ਤੁਮੈ ਕਹਤ ਮੈ ਸੋਇ ॥੧੪॥
jayo raajaa muhi keh mooe tumai kehat mai soe |14|
‘I am telling this the way Raja had communicated to me.(l4)

ਹਮ ਤੁਮ ਮਿਲਿ ਖੋਜਨ ਤਹ ਜੈਯੈ ॥
ham tum mil khojan teh jaiyai |
ਜੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸੁ ਕਾਜ ਕਮੈਯੈ ॥
jo nrip kahiyo su kaaj kamaiyai |
‘You and me will go out and search the way Raja had willed.
ਤਬ ਹੋ ਜਿਯਤ ਜਗਤ ਮੈ ਰਹਿਹੋ ॥
tab ho jiyat jagat mai rahiho |
ਐਸੇ ਰੂਪ ਭੂਪ ਜਬ ਲਹਿਹੋ ॥੧੫॥
aise roop bhoop jab lahiho |15|
‘I can only live in this world if I again possess the Raja again.’(15)
ਰਾਨੀ ਕੋ ਲੈ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਧਾਯੋ ॥
raanee ko lai mantree dhaayo |
ਤਵਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਕਰਿ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਠਹਰਾਯੋ ॥
tavan purakh kar nrip tthaharaayo |
Along with Rani, the Minister went out and established that man as Raja.
ਸਕਲ ਦੇਸ ਕੋ ਰਾਜਾ ਕੀਨੋ ॥
sakal des ko raajaa keeno |
ਰਾਜ ਸਾਜ ਸਭ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਦੀਨੋ ॥੧੬॥
raaj saaj sabh taa ko deeno |16|
He was en throned as the Raja of all the land and all the power was handed over to him.(16)

ਨਿਜੁ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਆਪੁ ਸੰਘਾਰਿ ਕੈ ਰਾਨੀ ਚਰਿਤ ਬਨਾਇ ॥
nij nrip aap sanghaar kai raanee charit banaae |
Herself killing the Raja she had staged a deception,
ਰੰਕਹਿ ਲੈ ਰਾਜਾ ਕਿਯੋ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਹਰਖ ਉਪਜਾਇ ॥੧੭॥
rankeh lai raajaa kiyo hridai harakh upajaae |17|
And felt much appeased by making the pauper a Raja.(17)(1)

ragh bansee jaa ko jag kahee |
There lived a Raja named Maingal Singh, who was from the clan of Raghu Wans.
ਤਾ ਕੇ ਭਵਨ ਏਕ ਬਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
taa ke bhavan ek bar naaree |
ਜਨੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਅਪਨ ਕਰਨ ਗੜਿ ਭਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
jan bidh apan karan garr bhaaree |1|
He had a woman in his house, who was, seemingly, carved by the God himself.(1)

She was known in the world as Dant Prabha and her beauty was
ਸੁਰ ਸੁਰਪਤਿ ਅਭਿਰਾਮ ਥਕਿਤ ਰਹਤ ਤਿਹ ਦੇਖਿ ਦੁਤਿ ॥੨॥
sur surapat abhiraam thakit rehat tih dekh dut |2|
admired by Indara and all the gods.(2)

ਇਕ ਚੇਰੀ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਭਵਨ ਜਾ ਮੈ ਅਤਿ ਰਸ ਰੀਤਿ ॥
eik cheree taa ke bhavan jaa mai at ras reet |
A perfect maid used to live in her residence,
ਬੇਦ ਬ︀ਯਾਕਰਨ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਖਟ ਪੜੀ ਕੋਕ ਸੰਗੀਤਿ ॥੩॥
bed bayaakaran saasatr khatt parree kok sangeet |3|
Who was proficient in Vedas, Grammar, Six Shastras, Philosophy and Koka-shastra.(3)
ਸੋ ਰਾਜਾ ਅਟਕਤ ਭਯੋ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਰੂਪ ਨਿਹਾਰਿ ॥
so raajaa attakat bhayo taa ko roop nihaar |
On perceiving her splendour, Raja fell for her,
ਦੈ ਨ ਸਕੈ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਕਛੂ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੀ ਸੰਕ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥੪॥
dai na sakai taa ko kachhoo triy kee sank bichaar |4|
But, being scared of his women, he could not give her any gift.( 4)

ਏਕ ਅੰਗੂਠੀ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕਰ ਲਈ ॥

ਲੈ ਤਵਨੈ ਚੇਰੀ ਕੌ ਦਈ ॥
lai tavanai cheree kau dee |
Raja brought a ring and gave it to that maid.
ਤਾਹਿ ਕਥਾ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਸਿਖਾਈ ॥
taeh kathaa ih bhaat sikhaaee |
ਕਹਿਯਹੁ ਪਰੀ ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਿਕਾ ਪਾਈ ॥੫॥
kahiyahu paree mundrikaa paaee |5|
He told her to’ say that she had found it being mislaid.(5)
ਏਕ ਦਿਵਸ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸਭਾ ਬਨਾਈ ॥
ek divas nrip sabhaa banaaee |
One day Raja had an assembly and called all his women.
ਸਭ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਬੋਲਿ ਪਠਾਈ ॥
sabh isatree grih bol patthaaee |
He told that he had last a ring.
ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਕਹੀ ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਮਮ ਗਈ ॥
nripat kahee mundree mam gee |
ਵਹੁ ਕਹਿ ਉਠੀ ਚੀਨਿ ਮੈ ਲਈ ॥੬॥
vahu keh utthee cheen mai lee |6|
The maid gat up and said that she had it with her.(6)
ਯਹ ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਿਕਾ ਕਹਾ ਤੇ ਪਾਈ ॥
yeh mundrikaa kahaa te paaee |
ਡਾਰੀ ਹੁਤੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਮਮ ਆਈ ॥
ddaaree hutee drisatt mam aaee |
‘Where did you find this ring?’ ‘It was lying an the way,
ਸੋ ਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਉਠਾਇ ਕਰ ਲਈ ॥
so mai kar utthaae kar lee |
ਲੈ ਰਾਜਾ ਜੀ ਤੁਮ ਕੌ ਦਈ ॥੭॥
lai raajaa jee tum kau dee |7|
‘And I picked it up. Now Raja, please you take it.’(7)

Raamkalee, Fifth Mehl:
ਸੇਵਕੁ ਲਾਇਓ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਸੇਵ ॥
sevak laaeo apunee sev |
He has linked His servant to His service.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੀਓ ਮੁਖਿ ਦੇਵ ॥
amrit naam deeo mukh dev |
The Divine Guru has poured the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord, into his mouth.
ਸਗਲੀ ਚਿੰਤਾ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ॥
sagalee chintaa aap nivaaree |
He has subdued all his anxiety.
ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਹਉ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
tis gur kau hau sad balihaaree |1|
I am forever a sacrifice to that Guru. ||1||
ਕਾਜ ਹਮਾਰੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਗੁਰ ॥
kaaj hamaare poore satagur |
The True Guru has perfectly resolved my affairs.
ਬਾਜੇ ਅਨਹਦ ਤੂਰੇ ਸਤਗੁਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
baaje anahad toore satagur |1| rahaau |
The True Guru vibrates the unstruck melody of the sound current. ||1||Pause||
ਮਹਿਮਾ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਗਹਿਰ ਗੰਭੀਰ ॥
mahimaa jaa kee gahir ganbheer |
His Glory is profound and unfathomable.
ਹੋਇ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ਦੇਇ ਜਿਸੁ ਧੀਰ ॥
hoe nihaal dee jis dheer |
One whom He blesses with patience becomes blissful.
ਜਾ ਕੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਕਾਟੇ ਰਾਇ ॥
jaa ke bandhan kaatte raae |
One whose bonds are shattered by the Sovereign Lord
ਸੋ ਨਰੁ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਜੋਨੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੨॥
so nar bahur na jonee paae |2|
is not cast into the womb of reincarnation again. ||2||
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਿਓ ਆਪ ॥
jaa kai antar pragattio aap |
One who is illuminated by the Lord's radiance within,
ਤਾ ਕਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਦੂਖ ਸੰਤਾਪ ॥
taa kau naahee dookh santaap |
is not touched by pain and sorrow.
ਲਾਲੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਪਾਲੈ ਪਰਿਆ ॥
laal ratan tis paalai pariaa |
He holds in his robe the gems and jewels.
ਸਗਲ ਕੁਟੰਬ ਓਹੁ ਜਨੁ ਲੈ ਤਰਿਆ ॥੩॥
sagal kuttanb ohu jan lai tariaa |3|
That humble being is saved, along with all his generations. ||3||
ਨਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਨ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਦੂਜਾ ॥
naa kichh bharam na dubidhaa doojaa |
He has no doubt, double-mindedness or duality at all.
ਏਕੋ ਏਕੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਪੂਜਾ ॥
eko ek niranjan poojaa |
He worships and adores the One Immaculate Lord alone.
ਜਤ ਕਤ ਦੇਖਉ ਆਪਿ ਦਇਆਲ ॥
jat kat dekhau aap deaal |
Wherever I look, I see the Merciful Lord.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮਿਲੇ ਰਸਾਲ ॥੪॥੪॥੧੫॥
kahu naanak prabh mile rasaal |4|4|15|
Says Nanak, I have found God, the source of nectar. ||4||4||15||

Raamkalee, Fifth Mehl:
ਤਨ ਤੇ ਛੁਟਕੀ ਅਪਨੀ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
tan te chhuttakee apanee dhaaree |
My self-conceit has been eliminated from my body.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਲਗੀ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥
prabh kee aagiaa lagee piaaree |
The Will of God is dear to me.
ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੈ ਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਮੇਰੈ ਮੀਠਾ ॥
jo kichh karai su man merai meetthaa |
Whatever He does, seems sweet to my mind.
ਤਾ ਇਹੁ ਅਚਰਜੁ ਨੈਨਹੁ ਡੀਠਾ ॥੧॥
taa ihu acharaj nainahu ddeetthaa |1|
And then, these eyes behold the wondrous Lord. ||1||
ਅਬ ਮੋਹਿ ਜਾਨੀ ਰੇ ਮੇਰੀ ਗਈ ਬਲਾਇ ॥
ab mohi jaanee re meree gee balaae |
Now, I have become wise and my demons are gone.
ਬੁਝਿ ਗਈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਨਿਵਾਰੀ ਮਮਤਾ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਲੀਓ ਸਮਝਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bujh gee trisan nivaaree mamataa gur poorai leeo samajhaae |1| rahaau |
My thirst is quenched, and my attachment is dispelled. The Perfect Guru has instructed me. ||1||Pause||
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਰਾਖਿਓ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਰਨਾ ॥
kar kirapaa raakhio gur saranaa |
In His Mercy, the Guru has kept me under His protection.
ਗੁਰਿ ਪਕਰਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਚਰਨਾ ॥
gur pakaraae har ke charanaa |
The Guru has attached me to the Lord's Feet.
ਬੀਸ ਬਿਸੁਏ ਜਾ ਮਨ ਠਹਰਾਨੇ ॥
bees bisue jaa man tthaharaane |
When the mind is totally held in check,
ਗੁਰ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਏਕੈ ਹੀ ਜਾਨੇ ॥੨॥
gur paarabraham ekai hee jaane |2|
one sees the Guru and the Supreme Lord God as one and the same. ||2||
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਕੀਨੋ ਹਮ ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ਦਾਸ ॥
jo jo keeno ham tis ke daas |
Whoever You have created, I am his slave.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਰੇ ਕੋ ਸਗਲ ਨਿਵਾਸ ॥
prabh mere ko sagal nivaas |
My God dwells in all.
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਦੂਤੁ ਨਹੀ ਬੈਰਾਈ ॥
naa ko doot nahee bairaaee |
I have no enemies, no adversaries.
ਗਲਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਚਾਲੇ ਏਕੈ ਭਾਈ ॥੩॥
gal mil chaale ekai bhaaee |3|
I walk arm in arm, like brothers, with all. ||3||
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਗੁਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਦੀਏ ਸੂਖਾ ॥
jaa kau gur har dee sookhaa |
One whom the Guru, the Lord, blesses with peace,
ਤਾ ਕਉ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਲਾਗਹਿ ਦੂਖਾ ॥
taa kau bahur na laageh dookhaa |
does not suffer in pain any longer.
ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ਸਰਬ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲ ॥
aape aap sarab pratipaal |
He Himself cherishes all.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਤਉ ਰੰਗਿ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥੪॥੫॥੧੬॥
naanak raatau rang gopaal |4|5|16|
Nanak is imbued with the love of the Lord of the World. ||4||5||16||

Raamkalee, Fifth Mehl:
ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਪੜਤਾ ਟੀਕਾ ਸਹਿਤ ॥
mukh te parrataa tteekaa sahit |
You read the scriptures, and the commentaries,
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਾਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਰਹਤ ॥
hiradai raam nahee pooran rehat |
but the Perfect Lord does not dwell in your heart.
ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਲੋਕ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਵੈ ॥
aupades kare kar lok drirraavai |
You preach to others to have faith,
ਅਪਨਾ ਕਹਿਆ ਆਪਿ ਨ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
apanaa kahiaa aap na kamaavai |1|
but you do not practice what you preach. ||1||
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਬੇਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ॥
panddit bed beechaar panddit |
O Pandit, O religious scholar, contemplate the Vedas.
ਮਨ ਕਾ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਪੰਡਿਤ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
man kaa krodh nivaar panddit |1| rahaau |
Eradicate anger from your mind, O Pandit. ||1||Pause||
ਆਗੈ ਰਾਖਿਓ ਸਾਲ ਗਿਰਾਮੁ ॥
aagai raakhio saal giraam |
You place your stone god before yourself,
ਮਨੁ ਕੀਨੋ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮੁ ॥
man keeno deh dis bisraam |
but your mind wanders in the ten directions.
ਤਿਲਕੁ ਚਰਾਵੈ ਪਾਈ ਪਾਇ ॥
tilak charaavai paaee paae |
You apply a ceremonial tilak mark to its forehead, and fall at its feet.
ਲੋਕ ਪਚਾਰਾ ਅੰਧੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥੨॥
lok pachaaraa andh kamaae |2|
You try to appease the people, and act blindly. ||2||
ਖਟੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਅਰੁ ਆਸਣੁ ਧੋਤੀ ॥
khatt karamaa ar aasan dhotee |
You perform the six religious rituals, and sit wearing your loin-cloth.
ਭਾਗਠਿ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਪੜੈ ਨਿਤ ਪੋਥੀ ॥
bhaagatth grihi parrai nit pothee |
In the homes of the wealthy, you read the prayer book.
ਮਾਲਾ ਫੇਰੈ ਮੰਗੈ ਬਿਭੂਤ ॥
maalaa ferai mangai bibhoot |
You chant on your mala, and beg for money.
ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਤਰਿਓ ਮੀਤ ॥੩॥
eih bidh koe na tario meet |3|
No one has ever been saved in this way, friend. ||3||
ਸੋ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
so panddit gurasabad kamaae |
He alone is a Pandit, who lives the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਕੀ ਓਸੁ ਉਤਰੀ ਮਾਇ ॥
trai gun kee os utaree maae |
Maya, of the three qualities, leaves him.
ਚਤੁਰ ਬੇਦ ਪੂਰਨ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥
chatur bed pooran har naae |
The four Vedas are completely contained within the Lord's Name.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਸਰਣੀ ਪਾਇ ॥੪॥੬॥੧੭॥
naanak tis kee saranee paae |4|6|17|
Nanak seeks His Sanctuary. ||4||6||17||
