ਕਾਹੂ ਕਹ ਮੁਹਰੈ ਚਟਵਾਈ ॥

ਕਾਹੂ ਕਹਾ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਕੀ ਨ੍ਰਯਾਈ ॥
kaahoo kahaa mitr kee nrayaaee |
He presented gold-coins to some and to some he extended his hand in friendship.
ਕਾਹੂ ਸੰਗ ਨੇਹ ਉਪਜਾਯੋ ॥
kaahoo sang neh upajaayo |
ਕਿਸੂ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਸੰਗ ਭੋਗ ਕਮਾਯੋ ॥੧੨॥
kisoo triyaa sang bhog kamaayo |12|
He showered love on some and with some women, he made love.(12)

ਕਾਹੂ ਕਹ ਸੁਭ ਪਟ ਦਏ ਕਾਹੂ ਕਹ ਧਨੁ ਦੀਨ ॥
kaahoo keh subh patt de kaahoo keh dhan deen |
He gave expensive clothes to some and to some he handed out wealth.
ਐਸੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਚੇਰੀ ਸਕਲ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਅਪਨੀ ਕਰਿ ਲੀਨ ॥੧੩॥
aisee bidh cheree sakal nrip apanee kar leen |13|
And through such actions he won over all the maids, too.(l3)

ਐਸ ਹੀ ਬਾਹਰ ਕੀ ਬਸਿ ਕਰੀ ॥
ais hee baahar kee bas karee |
ਸਭ ਇਸਤ੍ਰੀ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੇ ਰਸ ਢਰੀ ॥
sabh isatree nrip ke ras dtaree |
Thus, all the outsider women he captivated and they all were trammelled.
ਜੋ ਰਾਜਾ ਕਹ ਭੇਦ ਨ ਦੇਈ ॥
jo raajaa keh bhed na deee |
ਤਿਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਪੈਠਨ ਨਹਿ ਦੇਈ ॥੧੪॥
tih triy nrip paitthan neh deee |14|
They all conveyed the secrets to Raja and the one who did not, Raja would not invite her.(14)

ਸਭ ਚੇਰੀ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਬਸਿ ਭਈ ਸਭ ਸੋ ਰਾਖਤ ਨੇਹ ॥
sabh cheree nrip bas bhee sabh so raakhat neh |
All the maids became under the control of the Raja,
ਜੁ ਕਛੁ ਬਾਤ ਤਵ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕਰੈ ਆਨਿ ਇਸੈ ਕਹ ਦੇਹ ॥੧੫॥
ju kachh baat tav triy karai aan isai keh deh |15|
And whatever they heard from the Rani, they would come and divulge to Raja.(15)
ਸਭ ਇਸਤ੍ਰਿਨ ਸੌ ਸੋ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਜੋ ਕਛੁ ਕਹਤ ਬਖਾਨਿ ॥
sabh isatrin sau so triyaa jo kachh kehat bakhaan |
Whenever Rani spoke, the maids showed their concurrence,
ਮੁਖ ਵਾ ਪੈ ਹਾ ਹਾ ਕਰੈ ਕਹੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਸੋ ਆਨਿ ॥੧੬॥
mukh vaa pai haa haa karai kahai nripat so aan |16|
But, on the other hand, they would come immediately to inform the Raja.(16)

ਏਕ ਦਿਵਸ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
ek divas nrip mantr bichaariyo |
ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਇਹੈ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਸੁ ਧਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
chit mai ihai charitr su dhaariyo |
One day, the Raja pondered over, and resolved for a design,
ਜੜ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੋ ਸਭ ਧਨ ਹਰਿ ਲੇਊ ॥
jarr triy ko sabh dhan har leaoo |
ਲੈ ਅਪਨੇ ਖਰਚਨ ਕਹ ਦੇਊ ॥੧੭॥
lai apane kharachan keh deaoo |17|
‘All the wealth of this woman, I will confiscate and let her live barely on subsistence.’(17)
ਰਾਨੀ ਕੀ ਚੇਰੀ ਕਹਲਾਵੈ ॥
raanee kee cheree kahalaavai |
ਆਨਿ ਭੇਦ ਸਭ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਹਿ ਜਤਾਵੈ ॥
aan bhed sabh nripeh jataavai |
One lady who was Rani’s maid, used to come and tell the Raja everything.
ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਤਿਨ ਕਹ ਅਪਨੀ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨੈ ॥
triy tin keh apanee kar maanai |
ਮੂਰਖ ਨਾਰਿ ਭੇਦ ਨਹਿ ਜਾਨੈ ॥੧੮॥
moorakh naar bhed neh jaanai |18|
The woman thought her to be her confidant, but the fool did not know real mystery.(18)
ਨਿਜੁ ਸੁਤ ਤੇ ਤਿਹ ਮਾਤ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
nij sut te tih maat kahaavai |
ਅਧਿਕ ਧਾਮ ਤੇ ਦਰਬ ਲੁਟਾਵੈ ॥
adhik dhaam te darab luttaavai |
Being elderly she considered that maid like her mother and spent lot of money on her.
ਜੋ ਚਿਤ ਕੀ ਤਿਹ ਬਾਤ ਸੁਨਾਵਤ ॥
jo chit kee tih baat sunaavat |
ਸੋ ਕਹਿ ਕਰਿ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕਹ ਸਮਝਾਵਤ ॥੧੯॥
so keh kar nrip keh samajhaavat |19|
But whatever she disclosed to her, she would go and tell the Raja.(l9)
ਭਲੋ ਬੁਰੋ ਤੁਹਿ ਮੈ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਿਹੋ ॥
bhalo buro tuhi mai bahu kariho |
ਤੋ ਪਰ ਰੂਠਿ ਲਹਤ ਤਿਹ ਰਹਿਹੋ ॥
to par rootth lehat tih rahiho |
Raja told the maid, ‘I will rebuke you and, immediately on her sight, I will get angry.
ਵਾ ਕੀ ਭਾਖਿ ਅਧਿਕ ਤੁਹਿ ਮਾਰੌ ॥
vaa kee bhaakh adhik tuhi maarau |
ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਨ ਲਹਤ ਚਿਤ ਤੇ ਤੁਹਿ ਡਾਰੌ ॥੨੦॥
triy na lehat chit te tuhi ddaarau |20|
‘Heeding to my wife I will beat you sufficiently and desert you, but she will not understand this secret.’(20)

ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਤਾ ਸੌ ਐਸੌ ਕਹਾ ਰਹੋ ਤਿਸੀ ਕੀ ਹੋਇ ॥
nrip taa sau aisau kahaa raho tisee kee hoe |
He then added, ‘You must remain her confidant.
ਭੇਦ ਸਕਲ ਮੁਹਿ ਦੀਜਿਯਹੁ ਜੁ ਕਛੁ ਕਹੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਸੋਇ ॥੨੧॥
bhed sakal muhi deejiyahu ju kachh kahai triy soe |21|
‘And whatever she tells you, you keep on revealing that to me.’(21)
ਵਾ ਹੀ ਕੀ ਹੋਈ ਰਹਤ ਨਿਤ ਤਿਹ ਅਧਿਕ ਰਿਝਾਇ ॥
vaa hee kee hoee rehat nit tih adhik rijhaae |
Apparently she became ally of Rani and tried to keep her happy.
ਜੁ ਕਛੁ ਭੇਦ ਅਬਲਾ ਕਹੈ ਦੇਤ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਕਹ ਆਇ ॥੨੨॥
ju kachh bhed abalaa kahai det nripat keh aae |22|
Everything she came to learn, she would come and tell the Raja.(22)

ਏਕ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕਹ ਰਾਇ ਬੁਲਾਯੋ ॥
ek triy keh raae bulaayo |
ਕਛੁਕ ਦਰਬੁ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਚਟਵਾਯੋ ॥
kachhuk darab taa te chattavaayo |
The Raja called a woman, lured her with money,
ਮੈ ਜੁ ਕਹੋ ਕਹੀਯਹੁ ਤਿਹ ਜਾਈ ॥
mai ju kaho kaheeyahu tih jaaee |
ਹੌ ਤੋ ਪਹਿ ਤਵ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਠਾਈ ॥੨੩॥
hau to peh tav mitr patthaaee |23|
And asked her to act the way he asked her, pretending as the confidant of the Rani.(23)

ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਨਾਰੀ ਵਹੁ ਦਰਬੁ ਦੈ ਅਪਨੀ ਕਰੀ ਬਨਾਇ ॥
nrip naaree vahu darab dai apanee karee banaae |
By giving lot of wealth, Raja had won her over to his side,
ਸਭ ਬ੍ਰਿਤਾਤ ਲੈ ਤਵਨ ਕੋ ਸਭ ਕਹਿਯਹੁ ਮੁਹਿ ਆਇ ॥੨੪॥
sabh britaat lai tavan ko sabh kahiyahu muhi aae |24|
And asked her to convey him all the Rani’s secrets.(24)

In the Golden Age of Sat Yuga, everyone spoke the Truth.
ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਈ ॥
ghar ghar bhagat guramukh hoee |
In each and every home, devotional worship was performed by the people, according to the Guru's Teachings.
ਸਤਜੁਗਿ ਧਰਮੁ ਪੈਰ ਹੈ ਚਾਰਿ ॥
satajug dharam pair hai chaar |
In that Golden Age, Dharma had four feet.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੧॥
guramukh boojhai ko beechaar |1|
How rare are those people who, as Gurmukh, contemplate this and understand. ||1||
ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੋਈ ॥
jug chaare naam vaddiaaee hoee |
In all four ages, the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is glory and greatness.
ਜਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਾਗੈ ਸੋ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ji naam laagai so mukat hovai gur bin naam na paavai koee |1| rahaau |
One who holds tight to the Naam is liberated; without the Guru, no one obtains the Naam. ||1||Pause||
ਤ੍ਰੇਤੈ ਇਕ ਕਲ ਕੀਨੀ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
tretai ik kal keenee door |
In the Silver Age of Traytaa Yuga, one leg was removed.
ਪਾਖੰਡੁ ਵਰਤਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਣਨਿ ਦੂਰਿ ॥
paakhandd varatiaa har jaanan door |
Hypocrisy became prevalent, and people thought that the Lord was far away.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
guramukh boojhai sojhee hoee |
The Gurmukhs still understood and realized;
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੨॥
antar naam vasai sukh hoee |2|
the Naam abided deep within them, and they were at peace. ||2||
ਦੁਆਪੁਰਿ ਦੂਜੈ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
duaapur doojai dubidhaa hoe |
In the Brass Age of Dwaapur Yuga, duality and double-mindedness arose.
ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨੇ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਦੋਇ ॥
bharam bhulaane jaaneh doe |
Deluded by doubt, they knew duality.
ਦੁਆਪੁਰਿ ਧਰਮਿ ਦੁਇ ਪੈਰ ਰਖਾਏ ॥
duaapur dharam due pair rakhaae |
In this Brass Age, Dharma was left with only two feet.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥੩॥
guramukh hovai ta naam drirraae |3|
Those who became Gurmukh implanted the Naam deep within. ||3||
ਕਲਜੁਗਿ ਧਰਮ ਕਲਾ ਇਕ ਰਹਾਏ ॥
kalajug dharam kalaa ik rahaae |
In the Iron Age of Kali Yuga, Dharma was left with only one power.
ਇਕ ਪੈਰਿ ਚਲੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਵਧਾਏ ॥
eik pair chalai maaeaa mohu vadhaae |
It walks on just one foot; love and emotional attachment to Maya have increased.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਅਤਿ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ॥
maaeaa mohu at gubaar |
Love and emotional attachment to Maya bring total darkness.
ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਉਧਾਰੁ ॥੪॥
satagur bhettai naam udhaar |4|
If someone meets the True Guru, he is saved, through the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||4||
ਸਭ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ॥
sabh jug meh saachaa eko soee |
Throughout the ages, there is only the One True Lord.
ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਸਚੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ ॥
sabh meh sach doojaa nahee koee |
Among all, is the True Lord; there is no other at all.
ਸਾਚੀ ਕੀਰਤਿ ਸਚੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
saachee keerat sach sukh hoee |
Praising the True Lord, true peace is attained.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੫॥
guramukh naam vakhaanai koee |5|
How rare are those, who as Gurmukh, chant the Naam. ||5||
ਸਭ ਜੁਗ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਊਤਮੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
sabh jug meh naam aootam hoee |
Throughout all the ages, the Naam is the ultimate, the most sublime.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
guramukh viralaa boojhai koee |
How rare are those, who as Gurmukh, understand this.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਏ ਭਗਤੁ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
har naam dhiaae bhagat jan soee |
One who meditates on the Lord's Name is a humble devotee.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜੁਗਿ ਜੁਗਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੋਈ ॥੬॥੧॥
naanak jug jug naam vaddiaaee hoee |6|1|
O Nanak, in each and every age, the Naam is glory and greatness. ||6||1||

je vaddabhaag hoveh vaddabhaagee taa har har naam dhiaavai |
If someone is very fortunate, and is blessed with great high destiny, then he meditates on the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਤ ਨਾਮੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
naam japat naame sukh paavai har naame naam samaavai |1|
Chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he finds peace, and merges in the Naam. ||1||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਸਦ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ॥
guramukh bhagat karahu sad praanee |
O mortal, as Gurmukh, worship the Lord in devotion forever.
ਹਿਰਦੈ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
hiradai pragaas hovai liv laagai guramat har har naam samaanee |1| rahaau |
Your heart shall be illumined; through the Guru's Teachings, lovingly attune yourself to the Lord. You shall merge in the Name of the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||Pause||
ਹੀਰਾ ਰਤਨ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਮਾਣਕ ਬਹੁ ਸਾਗਰ ਭਰਪੂਰੁ ਕੀਆ ॥
heeraa ratan javehar maanak bahu saagar bharapoor keea |
The Great Giver is filled with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and pearls;
ਜਿਸੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਵਡ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਤਿਨਿ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਕਢਿ ਕਢਿ ਲੀਆ ॥੨॥
jis vaddabhaag hovai vadd masatak tin guramat kadt kadt leea |2|
one who has good fortune and great destiny inscribed upon his forehead, digs them out, by following the Guru's Teachings. ||2||
ਰਤਨੁ ਜਵੇਹਰੁ ਲਾਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਾ ਗੁਰਿ ਕਾਢਿ ਤਲੀ ਦਿਖਲਾਇਆ ॥
ratan javehar laal har naamaa gur kaadt talee dikhalaaeaa |
The Lord's Name is the jewel, the emerald, the ruby; digging it out, the Guru has placed it in your palm.
ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨਹੀ ਲੀਆ ਤ੍ਰਿਣ ਓਲੈ ਲਾਖੁ ਛਪਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
bhaagaheen manamukh nahee leea trin olai laakh chhapaaeaa |3|
The unfortunate, self-willed manmukh does not obtain it; this priceless jewel remains hidden behind a curtain of straw. ||3||
ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਗੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਾ ਸਤਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਲਾਏ ॥
masatak bhaag hovai dhur likhiaa taa satagur sevaa laae |
If such pre-ordained destiny is written upon one's forehead, then the True Guru enjoins him to serve Him.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਤਨ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਪਾਵੈ ਧਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਏ ॥੪॥੧॥
naanak ratan javehar paavai dhan dhan guramat har paae |4|1|
O Nanak, then he obtains the jewel, the gem; blessed, blessed is that one who follows the Guru's Teachings, and finds the Lord. ||4||1||

ਰਾਮ ਜਨਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਭਇਆ ਅਨੰਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਨੀਕੀ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਨਾਇ ॥
raam janaa mil bheaa anandaa har neekee kathaa sunaae |
Meeting with the humble servants of the Lord, I am in ecstasy; they preach the sublime sermon of the Lord.
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਗਈ ਸਭ ਨੀਕਲਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਬੁਧਿ ਪਾਇ ॥੧॥
duramat mail gee sabh neekal satasangat mil budh paae |1|
The filth of evil-mindedness is totally washed away; joining the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, one is blessed with understanding. ||1||
ਰਾਮ ਜਨ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਰਾਮੁ ਬੋਲਾਇ ॥
raam jan guramat raam bolaae |
O humble servant of the Lord, follow the Guru's Teachings, and chant the Name of the Lord.
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਸੁਣੈ ਕਹੈ ਸੋ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਰਾਮ ਜਪਤ ਸੋਹਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jo jo sunai kahai so mukataa raam japat sohaae |1| rahaau |
Whoever hears and speaks it is liberated; chanting the Lord's Name, one is embellished with beauty. ||1||Pause||
ਜੇ ਵਡਭਾਗ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਜਨਾ ਭੇਟਾਇ ॥
je vaddabhaag hoveh mukh masatak har raam janaa bhettaae |
If someone has supremely high destiny written on his forehead, the Lord leads him to meet the humble servants of the Lord.
ਦਰਸਨੁ ਸੰਤ ਦੇਹੁ ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਸਭੁ ਦਾਲਦੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਹਿ ਜਾਇ ॥੨॥
darasan sant dehu kar kirapaa sabh daalad dukh leh jaae |2|
Be merciful, and grant me the Blessed Vision of the Saints' Darshan, which shall rid me of all poverty and pain. ||2||
ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਲੋਗ ਰਾਮ ਜਨ ਨੀਕੇ ਭਾਗਹੀਣ ਨ ਸੁਖਾਇ ॥
har ke log raam jan neeke bhaagaheen na sukhaae |
The Lord's people are good and sublime; the unfortunate ones do not like them at all.
ਜਿਉ ਜਿਉ ਰਾਮ ਕਹਹਿ ਜਨ ਊਚੇ ਨਰ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਡੰਸੁ ਲਗਾਇ ॥੩॥
jiau jiau raam kaheh jan aooche nar nindak ddans lagaae |3|
The more the Lord's exalted servants speak of Him, the more the slanderers attack and sting them. ||3||
ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਨਰ ਨਿੰਦਕ ਜਿਨ ਜਨ ਨਹੀ ਭਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸਖਾ ਸਖਾਇ ॥
dhrig dhrig nar nindak jin jan nahee bhaae har ke sakhaa sakhaae |
Cursed, cursed are the slanderers who do not like the humble, the friends and companions of the Lord.
ਸੇ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਚੋਰ ਵੇਮੁਖ ਮੁਖ ਕਾਲੇ ਜਿਨ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਪੈਜ ਨ ਭਾਇ ॥੪॥
se har ke chor vemukh mukh kaale jin gur kee paij na bhaae |4|
Those who do not like the honor and glory of the Guru are faithless, black-faced thieves, who have turned their backs on the Lord. ||4||
ਦਇਆ ਦਇਆ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਹਮ ਦੀਨ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਰਣਾਇ ॥
deaa deaa kar raakhahu har jeeo ham deen teree saranaae |
Have mercy, have mercy, please save me, Dear Lord. I am meek and humble - I seek Your protection.
ਹਮ ਬਾਰਿਕ ਤੁਮ ਪਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਰੇ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਬਖਸਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥੫॥੨॥
ham baarik tum pitaa prabh mere jan naanak bakhas milaae |5|2|
I am Your child, and You are my father, God. Please forgive servant Nanak and merge him with Yourself. ||5||2||
