ਉਤਰ ਦੇਸ ਰਾਵ ਇਕ ਭਾਰੋ ॥

ਸੂਰਜ ਬੰਸ ਮਾਝ ਉਜਿਯਾਰੋ ॥
sooraj bans maajh ujiyaaro |
In a country in the North, there lived a Raja who belonged to Sun clan.
ਰੂਪ ਮਤੀ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਬਰ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
roop matee taa kee bar naaree |
ਜਨੁਕ ਚੀਰਿ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਨਿਕਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
januk cheer chandramaa nikaaree |1|
Roop Mati was his wife; she was the embodiment of Moon.(1)
ਵਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਏਕ ਨੀਚ ਸੋ ਰਹੈ ॥
veh triy ek neech so rahai |
ਅਧਿਕ ਨਿੰਦ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਜਗ ਕਹੈ ॥
adhik nind taa kee jag kahai |
That woman was implicated with a low character and the whole world criticised her.
ਇਹ ਬਿਰਤਾਤ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਜਬ ਸੁਨ︀ਯੋ ॥
eih birataat nripat jab sunayo |
ਅਧਿਕ ਕੋਪ ਕਰਿ ਮਸਤਕ ਧੁਨ੍ਰਯੋ ॥੨॥
adhik kop kar masatak dhunrayo |2|
When Raja came to know of this, he shook his head (in dismay).(2)
ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੀ ਲਾਗ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਹੂੰ ਕਰੀ ॥
triy kee laag nripat hoon karee |
ਬਾਤੈ ਕਰਤ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਮਹਿ ਪਰੀ ॥
baatai karat drisatt meh paree |
When Raja investigated, he found her communicating with that man.
ਤਾ ਦਿਨ ਤੇ ਤਾ ਸੌ ਹਿਤ ਤ︀ਯਾਗਿਯੋ ॥
taa din te taa sau hit tayaagiyo |
ਅਵਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਨ ਕੇ ਰਸ ਅਨੁਰਾਗਿਯੋ ॥੩॥
avar triyan ke ras anuraagiyo |3|
He abandoned adoring her and became the lover of some other ladies.(3)
ਅਵਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਨ ਸੌ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਲਗਾਈ ॥
avar triyan sau preet lagaaee |
ਤਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਸੌ ਦਿਯ ਨੇਹ ਭੁਲਾਈ ॥
taa triy sau diy neh bhulaaee |
While revelling’ with other women he totally disregarded her affections.
ਤਾ ਕੇ ਧਾਮ ਨਿਤ︀ਯ ਚਲਿ ਆਵੈ ॥
taa ke dhaam nitay chal aavai |
ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਠਾਨਿ ਨਹਿ ਕੇਲ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
preet tthaan neh kel kamaavai |4|
He would come to her house every day, would show fondness but would not revel in making love.(4)

ਚਾਰਿ ਪਹਰ ਰਜਨੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਹਿ ਰਮਤ ਹੁਤੋ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇ ॥
chaar pehar rajanee triyeh ramat huto sukh paae |
He had been making love with her during all the four watches of the night,
ਰੋਸ ਭਯੋ ਜਬ ਤੇ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਘਰੀ ਨ ਭੋਗਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥
ros bhayo jab te hridai gharee na bhogaa jaae |5|
But now imbued in anger would not luxuriate even once,(5)

ਜਬ ਰਾਜਾ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਹ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
jab raajaa poojaa keh jaavai |
ਤਬ ਵਹੁ ਸਮੌ ਜਾਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
tab vahu samau jaar triy paavai |
Whenever Raja went out to attend prayers, at that time, her patron would come.
ਮਿਲਿ ਬਾਤੈ ਦੋਊ ਯੌ ਕਰਹੀ ॥
mil baatai doaoo yau karahee |
ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੀ ਕਾਨਿ ਕਛੂ ਨਹਿ ਧਰਹੀ ॥੬॥
nrip kee kaan kachhoo neh dharahee |6|
They gossiped freely without any care of the Raja,(6)
ਸਾਮੁਹਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਹੁਤੋ ਦਰਵਾਜੋ ॥
saamuhi taeh huto daravaajo |
ਲਾਗਿ ਰਹਾ ਭੀਤਨ ਸੌ ਰਾਜੋ ॥
laag rahaa bheetan sau raajo |
As the Raja’s door was quite opposite, and the Raja could hear their conversation.
ਜਬ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਜਾਰ ਸੁਨਿ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
jab ih bhaat jaar sun paayo |
ਭਾਜਿ ਗਯੋ ਨ ਸਕ︀ਯੋ ਠਹਰਾਯੋ ॥੭॥
bhaaj gayo na sakayo tthaharaayo |7|
When the friend learnt this, he did not stay and ran away.(7)

ਨਿਰਖਿ ਕੋਪ ਦ੍ਰਿਗ ਰਾਇ ਕੇ ਨੀਚ ਤੁਰਤੁ ਗਯੋ ਭਾਜ ॥
nirakh kop drig raae ke neech turat gayo bhaaj |
Seeing Raja in extreme rage, he had immediately darted out.
ਭਾਤਿ ਅਨੇਕ ਮਨਾਇਯੋ ਤਊ ਨ ਫਿਰਾ ਨਿਲਾਜ ॥੮॥
bhaat anek manaaeiyo taoo na firaa nilaaj |8|
Rani tried to stop him, but that shameless did not hang about.(8)

ਤਿਹ ਹਿਤ ਨਾਰਿ ਜਤਨ ਬਹੁ ਕੀਨੇ ॥
tih hit naar jatan bahu keene |
ਬਹੁਤੁ ਰੁਪਏ ਖਰਚਿ ਕਹ ਦੀਨੇ ॥
bahut rupe kharach keh deene |
She tried very hard and spent lot of wealth,
ਕੋਟਿ ਕਰੇ ਏਕੋ ਨਹਿ ਭਯੋ ॥
kott kare eko neh bhayo |
ਤਿਹ ਪਤਿ ਡਾਰਿ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਤੇ ਦਯੋ ॥੯॥
tih pat ddaar hridai te dayo |9|
But he did not yield and banished her from his heart.(9)
ਜਬ ਵਹੁ ਬਾਤ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਚਿਤ ਆਵੈ ॥
jab vahu baat nripat chit aavai |
ਸੰਕਿ ਰਹੈ ਨਹਿ ਭੋਗ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
sank rahai neh bhog kamaavai |
As this now pestered his mind, he would not think of having sex with her.
ਯਹ ਸਭ ਭੇਦ ਇਕ ਨਾਰੀ ਜਾਨੈ ॥
yeh sabh bhed ik naaree jaanai |
ਲਜਤ ਨਾਥ ਸੌ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਬਖਾਨੈ ॥੧੦॥
lajat naath sau kachh na bakhaanai |10|
Only the woman knew this secret which, being ashamed, she could not disclose.(10)

ਤਬ ਰਾਜੇ ਐਸੇ ਕਹਾ ਯਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਦੇਉਾਂ ॥
tab raaje aise kahaa yaa triy kachhoo na deauaan |
Then Raja ordered not to give anything to the woman,
ਨਾਮ ਜਾਰ ਕੋ ਲੈ ਤੁਰਤ ਯਾ ਕੋ ਧਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਲੇਉਾਂ ॥੧੧॥
naam jaar ko lai turat yaa ko dhan har leauaan |11|
And, on the pretext of her friend, deprived her in all respect.(11)

Raamkalee, First Mehl:
ਜਾ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
jaa har prabh kirapaa dhaaree |
When the Lord God showered His Mercy,
ਤਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਮਾਰੀ ॥
taa haumai vichahu maaree |
egotism was eradicated from within me.
ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕਿ ਰਾਮ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥
so sevak raam piaaree |
That humble servant who contemplates the
ਜੋ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥੧॥
jo gurasabadee beechaaree |1|
Word of the Guru's Shabad, is very dear to the Lord. ||1||
ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
so har jan har prabh bhaavai |
That humble servant of the Lord is pleasing to his Lord God;
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰੇ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਲਾਜ ਛੋਡਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ahinis bhagat kare din raatee laaj chhodd har ke gun gaavai |1| rahaau |
day and night, he performs devotional worship, day and night. Disregarding his own honor, he sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਧੁਨਿ ਵਾਜੇ ਅਨਹਦ ਘੋਰਾ ॥
dhun vaaje anahad ghoraa |
The unstruck melody of the sound current resonates and resounds;
ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਮੋਰਾ ॥
man maaniaa har ras moraa |
my mind is appeased by the subtle essence of the Lord.
ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੈ ਸਚੁ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥
gur poorai sach samaaeaa |
Through the Perfect Guru, I am absorbed in Truth.
ਗੁਰੁ ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
gur aad purakh har paaeaa |2|
Through the Guru, I have found the Lord, the Primal Being. ||2||
ਸਭਿ ਨਾਦ ਬੇਦ ਗੁਰਬਾਣੀ ॥
sabh naad bed gurabaanee |
Gurbani is the sound current of the Naad, the Vedas, everything.
ਮਨੁ ਰਾਤਾ ਸਾਰਿਗਪਾਣੀ ॥
man raataa saarigapaanee |
My mind is attuned to the Lord of the Universe.
ਤਹ ਤੀਰਥ ਵਰਤ ਤਪ ਸਾਰੇ ॥
teh teerath varat tap saare |
He is my sacred shrine of pilgrimage, fasting and austere self-discipline.
ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਿਸਤਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
gur miliaa har nisataare |3|
The Lord saves, and carries across, those who meet with the Guru. ||3||
ਜਹ ਆਪੁ ਗਇਆ ਭਉ ਭਾਗਾ ॥
jeh aap geaa bhau bhaagaa |
One whose self-conceit is gone, sees his fears run away.
ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਲਾਗਾ ॥
gur charanee sevak laagaa |
That servant grasps the Guru's feet.
ਗੁਰਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਆ ॥
gur satigur bharam chukaaeaa |
The Guru, the True Guru, has expelled my doubts.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੧੦॥
kahu naanak sabad milaaeaa |4|10|
Says Nanak, I have merged into the Word of the Shabad. ||4||10||
ਰਾਮਕਲੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Raamkalee, First Mehl:
ਛਾਦਨੁ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਮਾਗਤੁ ਭਾਗੈ ॥
chhaadan bhojan maagat bhaagai |
He runs around, begging for clothes and food.
ਖੁਧਿਆ ਦੁਸਟ ਜਲੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਆਗੈ ॥
khudhiaa dusatt jalai dukh aagai |
He burns with hunger and corruption, and will suffer in the world hereafter.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਲੀਨੀ ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥
guramat nahee leenee duramat pat khoee |
He does not follow the Guru's Teachings; through his evil-mindedness, he loses his honor.
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਪਾਵੈ ਜਨੁ ਕੋਈ ॥੧॥
guramat bhagat paavai jan koee |1|
Only through the Guru's Teachings will such a person become devoted. ||1||
ਜੋਗੀ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸੈ ॥
jogee jugat sehaj ghar vaasai |
The way of the Yogi is to dwell in the celestial home of bliss.
ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਏਕੋ ਕਰਿ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਭੀਖਿਆ ਭਾਇ ਸਬਦਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਸੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ek drisatt eko kar dekhiaa bheekhiaa bhaae sabad tripataasai |1| rahaau |
He looks impartially, equally upon all. He receives the charity of the Lord's Love, and the Word of the Shabad, and so he is satisfied. ||1||Pause||
ਪੰਚ ਬੈਲ ਗਡੀਆ ਦੇਹ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
panch bail gaddeea deh dhaaree |
The five bulls, the senses, pull the wagon of the body around.
ਰਾਮ ਕਲਾ ਨਿਬਹੈ ਪਤਿ ਸਾਰੀ ॥
raam kalaa nibahai pat saaree |
By the Lord's power, one's honor is preserved.
ਧਰ ਤੂਟੀ ਗਾਡੋ ਸਿਰ ਭਾਰਿ ॥
dhar toottee gaaddo sir bhaar |
But when the axle breaks, the wagon falls and crashes.
ਲਕਰੀ ਬਿਖਰਿ ਜਰੀ ਮੰਝ ਭਾਰਿ ॥੨॥
lakaree bikhar jaree manjh bhaar |2|
It falls apart, like a pile of logs. ||2||
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਜੋਗੀ ॥
gur kaa sabad veechaar jogee |
Contemplate the Word of the Guru's Shabad, Yogi.
ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਮ ਕਰਣਾ ਸੋਗ ਬਿਓਗੀ ॥
dukh sukh sam karanaa sog biogee |
Look upon pain and pleasure as one and the same, sorrow and separation.
ਭੁਗਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੀਚਾਰੀ ॥
bhugat naam gur sabad beechaaree |
Let your food be contemplative meditation upon the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਕੰਧੁ ਜਪੈ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ॥੩॥
asathir kandh japai nirankaaree |3|
Your wall shall be permanent, by meditating on the Formless Lord. ||3||
ਸਹਜ ਜਗੋਟਾ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੇ ਛੂਟਾ ॥
sehaj jagottaa bandhan te chhoottaa |
Wear the loin-cloth of poise, and be free of entanglements.
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਲੂਟਾ ॥
kaam krodh gurasabadee loottaa |
The Guru's Word shall release you from sexual desire and anger.
ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾ ॥
man meh mundraa har gur saranaa |
In your mind, let your ear-rings be the Sanctuary of the Guru, the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਜਨ ਤਰਣਾ ॥੪॥੧੧॥
naanak raam bhagat jan taranaa |4|11|
O Nanak, worshipping the Lord in deep devotion, the humble are carried across. ||4||11||
