‘Then came the turn of the thief and
ਤੁਮੈ ਕਥਾ ਸੋ ਕਹੌ ਸੁਨਾਈ ॥੭॥

ਹਜਰਤਿ ਤੇ ਤਸਕਰ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਆਯੋ ॥

‘That thief, then, came to the honourable’s house and
ਗਪਿਯਾ ਕਹ ਜਮ ਲੋਕ ਪਠਾਯੋ ॥

Despatched the gossiper to the angel of death.

‘And saved the life of the Shah, the woman should go to him.(9)

‘And the one who saved the life of the Shah, the woman should be given to him.’(10)

And all this transpired through the murder of the gossiper and the stealing of the clothes.(l2)(1)

There lived a Jat (peasant) in the jungle along with is quarrelsome wife.
ਜੋ ਵਹੁ ਕਹਤ ਸੁ ਨ ਕਰਤ ਗਾਰਿਨ ਕਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰ ॥੧॥

‘No’ she said without any hesitation, ‘I will definitely give each one of them a coin of takka.
ਦਿਜਨ ਦੇਤ ਅਬ ਬਿਲੰਬ ਨ ਕਰਿਹੌ ॥

eihu keh kahoon bor kar maaro |
ਨਿਤ︀ਯ ਨਿਤ︀ਯ ਕੋ ਤਾਪੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੋ ॥੧੦॥
nitay nitay ko taap nivaaro |10|

ਕਰਿ ਡੋਰੀ ਤੁਮ ਕਹ ਮੈ ਦੈਹੋ ॥

ਉਨ ਭਾਖੋ ਯੌ ਹੀ ਉਠਿ ਜੈਹੋ ॥੧੧॥

ਅਬ ਹੀ ਪਾਰਿ ਨਦੀ ਕੇ ਹ੍ਵੈਹੌ ॥੧੩॥
ab hee paar nadee ke hvaihau |13|
The woman said, ‘No, I will go across by holding the tail of a bull.’(13)
ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਨਿਰਵੈਰੁ ਅਕਾਲ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਅਜੂਨੀ ਸੈਭੰ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

je man chit aas rakheh har aoopar taa man chinde anek anek fal paaee |
If, in his conscious mind, he places his hopes in the Lord, then he shall obtain the fruits of all the many desires of his mind.
ਹਰਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜੋ ਜੀਇ ਵਰਤੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਘਾਲਿਆ ਕਿਸੈ ਕਾ ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
har jaanai sabh kichh jo jee varatai prabh ghaaliaa kisai kaa ik til na gavaaee |
The Lord knows everything which happens to the soul. Not even an iota of one's effort goes to waste.
ਹਰਿ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਆਸ ਕੀਜੈ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਜੋ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੧॥
har tis kee aas keejai man mere jo sabh meh suaamee rahiaa samaaee |1|
Place your hopes in the Lord, O my mind; the Lord and Master is pervading and permeating all. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਆਸਾ ਕਰਿ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥
mere man aasaa kar jagadees gusaaee |
O my mind, place your hopes in the Lord of the World, the Master of the Universe.
ਜੋ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਆਸ ਅਵਰ ਕਾਹੂ ਕੀ ਕੀਜੈ ਸਾ ਨਿਹਫਲ ਆਸ ਸਭ ਬਿਰਥੀ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jo bin har aas avar kaahoo kee keejai saa nihafal aas sabh birathee jaaee |1| rahaau |
That hope which is placed in any other than the Lord - that hope is fruitless, and totally useless. ||1||Pause||
ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਸਭੁ ਮਤ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਆਸ ਲਗਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
jo deesai maaeaa moh kuttanb sabh mat tis kee aas lag janam gavaaee |
That which you can see, Maya, and all attachment to family - don't place your hopes in them, or your life will be wasted and lost.
ਇਨੑ ਕੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਹਾਥਿ ਨਹੀ ਕਹਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਇਹਿ ਬਪੁੜੇ ਇਨੑ ਕਾ ਵਾਹਿਆ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਵਸਾਈ ॥
eina kai kichh haath nahee kahaa kareh ihi bapurre ina kaa vaahiaa kachh na vasaaee |
Nothing is in their hands; what can these poor creatures do? By their actions, nothing can be done.
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਆਸ ਕਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਕੀ ਜੋ ਤੁਝੁ ਤਾਰੈ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੁਟੰਬੁ ਸਭੁ ਛਡਾਈ ॥੨॥
mere man aas kar har preetam apune kee jo tujh taarai teraa kuttanb sabh chhaddaaee |2|
O my mind, place your hopes in the Lord, your Beloved, who shall carry you across, and save your whole family as well. ||2||
ਜੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਆਸ ਅਵਰ ਕਰਹਿ ਪਰਮਿਤ੍ਰੀ ਮਤ ਤੂੰ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਕਿਤੈ ਕੰਮਿ ਆਈ ॥
je kichh aas avar kareh paramitree mat toon jaaneh terai kitai kam aaee |
If you place your hopes in any other, in any friend other than the Lord, then you shall come to know that it is of no use at all.
ਇਹ ਆਸ ਪਰਮਿਤ੍ਰੀ ਭਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ਹੈ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਝੂਠੁ ਬਿਨਸਿ ਸਭ ਜਾਈ ॥
eih aas paramitree bhaau doojaa hai khin meh jhootth binas sabh jaaee |
This hope placed in other friends comes from the love of duality. In an instant, it is gone; it is totally false.
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਆਸਾ ਕਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੀ ਜੋ ਤੇਰਾ ਘਾਲਿਆ ਸਭੁ ਥਾਇ ਪਾਈ ॥੩॥
mere man aasaa kar har preetam saache kee jo teraa ghaaliaa sabh thaae paaee |3|
O my mind, place your hopes in the Lord, your True Beloved, who shall approve and reward you for all your efforts. ||3||
ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਜੈਸੀ ਤੂ ਆਸ ਕਰਾਵਹਿ ਤੈਸੀ ਕੋ ਆਸ ਕਰਾਈ ॥
aasaa manasaa sabh teree mere suaamee jaisee too aas karaaveh taisee ko aas karaaee |
Hope and desire are all Yours, O my Lord and Master. As You inspire hope, so are the hopes held.
ਕਿਛੁ ਕਿਸੀ ਕੈ ਹਥਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਐਸੀ ਮੇਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
kichh kisee kai hath naahee mere suaamee aisee merai satigur boojh bujhaaee |
Nothing is in the hands of anyone, O my Lord and Master; such is the understanding the True Guru has given me to understand.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਆਸ ਤੂ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸਨਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਈ ॥੪॥੧॥
jan naanak kee aas too jaaneh har darasan dekh har darasan tripataaee |4|1|
You alone know the hope of servant Nanak, O Lord; gazing upon the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan, he is satisfied. ||4||1||
