ਭਈ ਭੋਰ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਕਰਿ ਮਗਾਯੋ ॥
bhee bhor fir pakar magaayo |
The King had put his son in the prison and in the morning he called him back.
ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਰੇ ॥
mantree prabh so bachan uchare |
ਭੂਪਤਿ ਸੁਧਾ ਸ੍ਰਵਨੁ ਜਨੁ ਭਰੇ ॥੧॥

The Minister conversed again and the Raja paid attention.(1)

ਮਹਾਨੰਦ ਮੁਰਦਾਰ ਕੀ ਹੁਤੀ ਬਹੁਰਿਯਾ ਏਕ ॥
mahaanand muradaar kee hutee bahuriyaa ek |
A poor man called Mahan Nand had a wife,
ਤਾ ਸੋ ਰਤਿ ਮਾਨਤ ਹੁਤੇ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਤੁਰਕ ਅਨੇਕ ॥੨॥
taa so rat maanat hute hindoo turak anek |2|
With whom numerous Hindus and Muslims used to indulge in making love.(2)
ਮਹਾਨੰਦ ਮੁਰਦਾਰ ਕੀ ਘੁਰਕੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੋ ਨਾਮ ॥
mahaanand muradaar kee ghurakee triy ko naam |
Mahan Nand’s wife was known as Ghurki (literally scolding),
ਕੋਪ ਸਮੈ ਨਿਜੁ ਨਾਹ ਕੋ ਘੁਰਕਤ ਆਠੋ ਜਾਮ ॥੩॥
kop samai nij naah ko ghurakat aattho jaam |3|
She always scolded her husband.(3)
ਏਕ ਚਛ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਰਹੈ ਬਿਰਧਿ ਆਪੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਜ੍ਵਾਨ ॥
ek chachh taa ko rahai biradh aap triy jvaan |
He was blind of one eye and much older in age than his wife.
ਸੋ ਯਾ ਪਰ ਰੀਝਤ ਨਹੀ ਯਾ ਕੇ ਵਾ ਮਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ॥੪॥
so yaa par reejhat nahee yaa ke vaa meh praan |4|
The wife despised him but he felt as if she was his life and soul.(4)
ਕਾਜ ਕਵਨ ਹੂੰ ਕੇ ਨਿਮਿਤਿ ਗਯੋ ਧਾਮ ਕੋ ਧਾਇ ॥
kaaj kavan hoon ke nimit gayo dhaam ko dhaae |
As soon as he would go out of the house to work, his wife would get
ਤਰੁਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਸੋ ਤਰੁਨਿ ਤਹ ਰਹੀ ਹੁਤੀ ਲਪਟਾਇ ॥੫॥
tarun purakh so tarun teh rahee hutee lapattaae |5|
Entangled with a young man to make love.(5)
ਮਹਾਨੰਦ ਆਵਤ ਸੁਨ︀ਯੋ ਲਯੋ ਗਰੇ ਸੌ ਲਾਇ ॥
mahaanand aavat sunayo layo gare sau laae |
When she would notice Mahan Nand coming back, she would
ਅਤਿ ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਾਤੈ ਕਰੀ ਹ੍ਰਿਦੈ ਹਰਖ ਉਪਜਾਇ ॥੬॥
at bachitr baatai karee hridai harakh upajaae |6|
Ascertain to embrace him and felicitate him with pleasant talks and ravishing action.(6)
ਕਾਨ ਦੋਊ ਗਹਿਰੇ ਗਹੇ ਚੁੰਮਿ ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਗ ਲੀਨ ॥
kaan doaoo gahire gahe chunm ek drig leen |
She would kiss his both the ears and eyes, and, finding a right moment
ਇਹ ਛਲ ਸੌ ਛਲਿ ਕੈ ਜੜਹਿ ਯਾਰ ਬਿਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਨ ॥੭॥
eih chhal sau chhal kai jarreh yaar bidaa kar deen |7|
With trickery, would bid goodbye to her (hidden) lover.(7)
ਸ੍ਰਵਨਨ ਕਛੁ ਖਰਕੋ ਸੁਨੈ ਇਕ ਚਖੁ ਸਕੈ ਨ ਹੇਰਿ ॥
sravanan kachh kharako sunai ik chakh sakai na her |
Mahan Nand’s ears would be alerted with some noise (of the lover
ਪਰੋ ਸਦਾ ਮੋਰੇ ਰਹੈ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਭੇਵ ਅਧੇਰ ॥੮॥
paro sadaa more rahai lahai na bhev adher |8|
Leaving) but, being blind of one eye, he would not fathom the mystery.(8)
ਹੇਰਿ ਰੂਪ ਤਵ ਬਸਿ ਭਈ ਮੋ ਮਨ ਬਢ︀ਯੋ ਅਨੰਗ ॥
her roop tav bas bhee mo man badtayo anang |
The wife would express to him, ‘I was overwhelmed with your sensuality,
ਚੂੰਮਿ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਲਯੋ ਅਤਿ ਹਿਤ ਚਿਤ ਕੇ ਸੰਗ ॥੯॥
choonm netr taa te layo at hit chit ke sang |9|
‘And for that I kissed your ears and eyes in passion.’(9)
ਮਹਾਨੰਦ ਇਹ ਬਾਤ ਸੁਨਿ ਫੂਲਿ ਗਯੋ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
mahaanand ih baat sun fool gayo man maeh |
Hearing this Mahan Nand would get exhilarated,
ਅਧਿਕ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਤਾ ਸੋ ਕਰੀ ਭੇਦ ਪਛਾਨ︀ਯੋ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੧੦॥
adhik preet taa so karee bhed pachhaanayo naeh |10|
And without understanding the enigma, would revel in making love.(10)

ਬੰਦਿਸਾਲ ਕੋ ਭੂਪ ਤਬ ਨਿਜੁ ਸੁਤ ਦਯੋ ਪਠਾਇ ॥

The Raja had, then, put the son in the prison.
ਭੋਰ ਹੋਤ ਅਪਨੇ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਬਹੁਰੋ ਲੀਯੋ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥੧॥
bhor hot apane nikatt bahuro leeyo bulaae |1|
And early next morning he called him over.(1)

The Raja sent his son to the prison and early next morning called him back.
ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋ ਬਚਨ ਉਚਾਰੇ ॥

ਜਾਨੁਕ ਸੋਕ ਦੂਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਡਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
jaanuk sok door kar ddaare |2|
The Minister conversed with the Raja so as to eliminate-his afflictions.(2)

Bilaaval, Fifth Mehl:
ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਾ ਕਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਅਨ ਨਾਹੀ ਠਾਉ ॥
har bhagataa kaa aasaraa an naahee tthaau |
The Lord is the Hope and Support of His devotees; there is nowhere else for them to go.
ਤਾਣੁ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਧਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥
taan deebaan paravaar dhan prabh teraa naau |1|
O God, Your Name is my power, realm, relatives and riches. ||1||
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਣੀ ਅਪਨੇ ਦਾਸ ਰਖਿ ਲੀਏ ॥
kar kirapaa prabh aapanee apane daas rakh lee |
God has granted His Mercy, and saved His slaves.
ਨਿੰਦਕ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਪਚੇ ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ਗ੍ਰਸੀਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
nindak nindaa kar pache jamakaal grasee |1| rahaau |
The slanderers rot in their slander; they are seized by the Messenger of Death. ||1||Pause||
ਸੰਤਾ ਏਕੁ ਧਿਆਵਨਾ ਦੂਸਰ ਕੋ ਨਾਹਿ ॥
santaa ek dhiaavanaa doosar ko naeh |
The Saints meditate on the One Lord, and no other.
ਏਕਸੁ ਆਗੈ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਰਵਿਆ ਸ੍ਰਬ ਥਾਇ ॥੨॥
ekas aagai benatee raviaa srab thaae |2|
They offer their prayers to the One Lord, who is pervading and permeating all places. ||2||
ਕਥਾ ਪੁਰਾਤਨ ਇਉ ਸੁਣੀ ਭਗਤਨ ਕੀ ਬਾਨੀ ॥
kathaa puraatan iau sunee bhagatan kee baanee |
I have heard this old story, spoken by the devotees,
ਸਗਲ ਦੁਸਟ ਖੰਡ ਖੰਡ ਕੀਏ ਜਨ ਲੀਏ ਮਾਨੀ ॥੩॥
sagal dusatt khandd khandd kee jan lee maanee |3|
that all the wicked are cut apart into pieces, while His humble servants are blessed with honor. ||3||
ਸਤਿ ਬਚਨ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਪਰਗਟ ਸਭ ਮਾਹਿ ॥
sat bachan naanak kahai paragatt sabh maeh |
Nanak speaks the true words, which are obvious to all.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੇ ਸੇਵਕ ਸਰਣਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਭਉ ਨਾਹਿ ॥੪॥੨੬॥੫੬॥
prabh ke sevak saran prabh tin kau bhau naeh |4|26|56|
God's servants are under God's Protection; they have absolutely no fear. ||4||26||56||

Bilaaval, Fifth Mehl:
ਬੰਧਨ ਕਾਟੈ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕਲ ਹਾਥ ॥
bandhan kaattai so prabhoo jaa kai kal haath |
God breaks the bonds which hold us; He holds all power in His hands.
ਅਵਰ ਕਰਮ ਨਹੀ ਛੂਟੀਐ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਥ ॥੧॥
avar karam nahee chhootteeai raakhahu har naath |1|
No other actions will bring release; save me, O my Lord and Master. ||1||
ਤਉ ਸਰਣਾਗਤਿ ਮਾਧਵੇ ਪੂਰਨ ਦਇਆਲ ॥
tau saranaagat maadhave pooran deaal |
I have entered Your Sanctuary, O Perfect Lord of Mercy.
ਛੂਟਿ ਜਾਇ ਸੰਸਾਰ ਤੇ ਰਾਖੈ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
chhoott jaae sansaar te raakhai gopaal |1| rahaau |
Those whom You preserve and protect, O Lord of the Universe, are saved from the trap of the world. ||1||Pause||
ਆਸਾ ਭਰਮ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਮੋਹ ਇਨ ਮਹਿ ਲੋਭਾਨਾ ॥
aasaa bharam bikaar moh in meh lobhaanaa |
Hope, doubt, corruption and emotional attachment - in these, he is engrossed.
ਝੂਠੁ ਸਮਗ੍ਰੀ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੀ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੨॥
jhootth samagree man vasee paarabraham na jaanaa |2|
The false material world abides in his mind, and he does not understand the Supreme Lord God. ||2||
ਪਰਮ ਜੋਤਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਪੁਰਖ ਸਭਿ ਜੀਅ ਤੁਮੑਾਰੇ ॥
param jot pooran purakh sabh jeea tumaare |
O Perfect Lord of Supreme Light, all beings belong to You.
ਜਿਉ ਤੂ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਤਿਉ ਰਹਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰੇ ॥੩॥
jiau too raakheh tiau rahaa prabh agam apaare |3|
As You keep us, we live, O infinite, inaccessible God. ||3||
ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦੇਹਿ ਅਪਨਾ ਨਾਉ ॥
karan kaaran samarath prabh dehi apanaa naau |
Cause of causes, All-powerful Lord God, please bless me with Your Name.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਰੀਐ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥੪॥੨੭॥੫੭॥
naanak tareeai saadhasang har har gun gaau |4|27|57|
Nanak is carried across in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, Har, Har. ||4||27||57||

ਕਵਨੁ ਕਵਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਤਰਿਆ ਤੁਮੑਰੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ॥
kavan kavan nahee patariaa tumaree parateet |
Who? Who has not fallen, by placing their hopes in you?
ਮਹਾ ਮੋਹਨੀ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਨਰਕ ਕੀ ਰੀਤਿ ॥੧॥
mahaa mohanee mohiaa narak kee reet |1|
You are enticed by the great enticer - this is the way to hell! ||1||
ਮਨ ਖੁਟਹਰ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਸਾਸੁ ਤੂ ਮਹਾ ਉਦਮਾਦਾ ॥
man khuttahar teraa nahee bisaas too mahaa udamaadaa |
O vicious mind, no faith can be placed in you; you are totally intoxicated.
ਖਰ ਕਾ ਪੈਖਰੁ ਤਉ ਛੁਟੈ ਜਉ ਊਪਰਿ ਲਾਦਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
khar kaa paikhar tau chhuttai jau aoopar laadaa |1| rahaau |
The donkey's leash is only removed, after the load is placed on his back. ||1||Pause||
ਜਪ ਤਪ ਸੰਜਮ ਤੁਮੑ ਖੰਡੇ ਜਮ ਕੇ ਦੁਖ ਡਾਂਡ ॥
jap tap sanjam tuma khandde jam ke dukh ddaandd |
You destroy the value of chanting, intensive meditation and self-discipline; you shall suffer in pain, beaten by the Messenger of Death.
ਸਿਮਰਹਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਜੋਨਿ ਦੁਖ ਨਿਰਲਜੇ ਭਾਂਡ ॥੨॥
simareh naahee jon dukh niralaje bhaandd |2|
You do not meditate, so you shall suffer the pains of reincarnation, you shameless buffoon! ||2||
ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਹਾਈ ਮਹਾ ਮੀਤੁ ਤਿਸ ਸਿਉ ਤੇਰਾ ਭੇਦੁ ॥
har sang sahaaee mahaa meet tis siau teraa bhed |
The Lord is your Companion, your Helper, your Best Friend; but you disagree with Him.
ਬੀਧਾ ਪੰਚ ਬਟਵਾਰਈ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਮਹਾ ਖੇਦੁ ॥੩॥
beedhaa panch battavaaree upajio mahaa khed |3|
You are in love with the five thieves; this brings terrible pain. ||3||
ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਸੰਤਨ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਜਿਨ ਮਨੁ ਵਸਿ ਕੀਨਾ ॥
naanak tin santan saranaagatee jin man vas keenaa |
Nanak seeks the Sanctuary of the Saints, who have conquered their minds.
ਤਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਸਰਬਸੁ ਆਪਣਾ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਦੀਨੑਾ ॥੪॥੨੮॥੫੮॥
tan dhan sarabas aapanaa prabh jan kau deenaa |4|28|58|
He gives body, wealth and everything to the slaves of God. ||4||28||58||
ਬਿਲਾਵਲੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Bilaaval, Fifth Mehl:
ਉਦਮੁ ਕਰਤ ਆਨਦੁ ਭਇਆ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
audam karat aanad bheaa simarat sukh saar |
Try to meditate, and contemplate the source of peace, and bliss will come to you.
ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਕਾ ਪੂਰਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
jap jap naam gobind kaa pooran beechaar |1|
Chanting, and meditating on the Name of the Lord of the Universe, perfect understanding is achieved. ||1||
ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਗੁਰ ਕੇ ਜਪਤ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਹਉ ਜੀਵਾ ॥
charan kamal gur ke japat har jap hau jeevaa |
Meditating on the Lotus Feet of the Guru, and chanting the Name of the Lord, I live.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਆਰਾਧਤੇ ਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
paarabraham aaraadhate mukh amrit peevaa |1| rahaau |
Worshipping the Supreme Lord God in adoration, my mouth drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar. ||1||Pause||
ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਭਿ ਸੁਖਿ ਬਸੇ ਸਭ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਲੋਚ ॥
jeea jant sabh sukh base sabh kai man loch |
All beings and creatures dwell in peace; the minds of all yearn for the Lord.
ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੁ ਨਿਤ ਚਿਤਵਤੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਛੁ ਪੋਚ ॥੨॥
praupakaar nit chitavate naahee kachh poch |2|
Those who continually remember the Lord, do good deeds for others; they harbor no ill will towards anyone. ||2||
ਧੰਨੁ ਸੁ ਥਾਨੁ ਬਸੰਤ ਧੰਨੁ ਜਹ ਜਪੀਐ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
dhan su thaan basant dhan jeh japeeai naam |
Blessed is that place, and blessed are those who dwell there, where they chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਕਥਾ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਅਤਿ ਘਨਾ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮੁ ॥੩॥
kathaa keeratan har at ghanaa sukh sehaj bisraam |3|
The Sermon and the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises are sung there very often; there is peace, poise and tranquility. ||3||
ਮਨ ਤੇ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਅਨਾਥ ਕੋ ਨਾਥ ॥
man te kade na veesarai anaath ko naath |
In my mind, I never forget the Lord; He is the Master of the masterless.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਰਣਾਗਤੀ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਹਾਥ ॥੪॥੨੯॥੫੯॥
naanak prabh saranaagatee jaa kai sabh kichh haath |4|29|59|
Nanak has entered the Sanctuary of God; everything is in His hands. ||4||29||59||
