To love the Lotus Feet of the Lord-this way of life has come into the minds of His Saints.
ਦੁਤੀਆ ਭਾਉ ਬਿਪਰੀਤਿ ਅਨੀਤਿ ਦਾਸਾ ਨਹ ਭਾਵਏ ਜੀਉ ॥

The love of duality, this evil practice, this bad habit, is not liked by the Lord's slaves.
ਦਾਸਾ ਨਹ ਭਾਵਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਦਰਸਾਵਏ ਇਕ ਖਿਨੁ ਧੀਰਜੁ ਕਿਉ ਕਰੈ ॥
daasaa neh bhaave bin darasaave ik khin dheeraj kiau karai |
It is not pleasing to the Lord's slaves; without the Blessed Vision of the Lord's Darshan, how can they find peace, even for a moment?
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਹੂਨਾ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਹੀਨਾ ਜਲ ਬਿਨੁ ਮਛੁਲੀ ਜਿਉ ਮਰੈ ॥
naam bihoonaa tan man heenaa jal bin machhulee jiau marai |
Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the body and mind are empty; like fish out of water, they die.
ਮਿਲੁ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਅਧਾਰੇ ਗੁਣ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਗਾਵਏ ॥

Please meet with me, O my Beloved-You are the Support of my breath of life. Joining the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, I sing Your Glorious Praises.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਧਾਰਿ ਅਨੁਗ੍ਰਹੁ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਅੰਕਿ ਸਮਾਵਏ ॥੧॥

Your Word is Incomparable and Infinite. I contemplate the Word of Your Bani, the Support of the Saints.
ਸਿਮਰਤ ਸਾਸ ਗਿਰਾਸ ਪੂਰਨ ਬਿਸੁਆਸ ਕਿਉ ਮਨਹੁ ਬਿਸਾਰੀਐ ਜੀਉ ॥
simarat saas giraas pooran bisuaas kiau manahu bisaareeai jeeo |
I remember Him in meditation with every breath and morsel of food, with perfect faith. How could I forget Him from my mind?
ਕਿਉ ਮਨਹੁ ਬੇਸਾਰੀਐ ਨਿਮਖ ਨਹੀ ਟਾਰੀਐ ਗੁਣਵੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥

How could I forget Him from my mind, even for an instant? He is the Most Worthy; He is my very life!
ਮਨ ਬਾਂਛਤ ਫਲ ਦੇਤ ਹੈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਜੀਅ ਕੀ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਸਾਰੇ ॥

My Lord and Master is the Giver of the fruits of the mind's desires. He knows all the useless vanities and pains of the soul.
ਅਨਾਥ ਕੇ ਨਾਥੇ ਸ੍ਰਬ ਕੈ ਸਾਥੇ ਜਪਿ ਜੂਐ ਜਨਮੁ ਨ ਹਾਰੀਐ ॥
anaath ke naathe srab kai saathe jap jooai janam na haareeai |
Meditating on the Patron of lost souls, the Companion of all, your life shall not be lost in the gamble.
ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪਹਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਤਾਰੀਐ ॥੨॥

Nanak offers this prayer to God: Please shower me with Your Mercy, and carry me across the terrifying world-ocean. ||2||

My Lord and Master's Home is beautiful. It is the resting place of His devotees, who live in hopes of attaining it.
ਮਨਿ ਤਨੇ ਗਲਤਾਨ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਮ ਹਰਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵਤੇ ਜੀਉ ॥
man tane galataan simarat prabh naam har amrit peevate jeeo |
Their minds and bodies are absorbed in meditation on the Name of God; they drink in the Lord's Ambrosial Nectar.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਪੀਵਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਥਿਰੁ ਥੀਵਤੇ ਬਿਖੈ ਬਨੁ ਫੀਕਾ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
amrit har peevate sadaa thir theevate bikhai ban feekaa jaaniaa |
They drink in the Lord's Ambrosial Nectar, and become eternally stable. They know that the water of corruption is insipid and tasteless.
ਭਏ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੇਰੇ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਨਿਧਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥
bhe kirapaal gopaal prabh mere saadhasangat nidh maaniaa |
When my God, the Lord of the Universe became merciful, I came to look upon the Saadh Sangat as the treasure.
ਸਰਬਸੋ ਸੂਖ ਆਨੰਦ ਘਨ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਰਤਨੁ ਮਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸੀਵਤੇ ॥
sarabaso sookh aanand ghan piaare har ratan man antar seevate |
All pleasures and supreme ecstasy, O my Beloved, come to those who sew the Jewel of the Lord into their minds.
ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਵਿਸਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਆਧਾਰਾ ਜਪਿ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਵਤੇ ॥੩॥
eik til nahee visarai praan aadhaaraa jap jap naanak jeevate |3|
They do not forget, even for an instant, the Support of the breath of life. They live by constantly meditating on Him, O Nanak. ||3||

When Mahishasura, the king of all deemons, was killed,
ਤਬ ਕਾਇਰ ਭਾਜੇ ਸਬੈ ਛਾਡਿਓ ਸਕਲ ਸਮਾਜ ॥੫੧॥
tab kaaeir bhaaje sabai chhaaddio sakal samaaj |51|
Then all the cawards ran away leaving behind all paraphernalia.51.,

ਮਹਾਬੀਰ ਕਹਰੀ ਦੁਪਹਰੀ ਕੋ ਭਾਨੁ ਮਾਨੋ ਦੇਵਨ ਕੇ ਕਾਜ ਦੇਵੀ ਡਾਰਿਓ ਦੈਤ ਮਾਰਿ ਕੈ ॥
mahaabeer kaharee dupaharee ko bhaan maano devan ke kaaj devee ddaario dait maar kai |
Supremely heroic goddess, with the magnificence of the sun at noon, killed the demon-king for the well-being of gods.,
ਅਉਰ ਦਲੁ ਭਾਜਿਓ ਜੈਸੇ ਪਉਨ ਹੂੰ ਤੇ ਭਾਜੇ ਮੇਘ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਦੀਨੋ ਰਾਜ ਬਲੁ ਆਪਨੋ ਸੋ ਧਾਰਿ ਕੈ ॥
aaur dal bhaajio jaise paun hoon te bhaaje megh indr deeno raaj bal aapano so dhaar kai |
The remaining demon-army ran helter-skelter in such a way, as the cloud speed away before the wind, the goddess with her prowess bestowed the kingdom on Indra.,
ਦੇਸ ਦੇਸ ਕੇ ਨਰੇਸ ਡਾਰੈ ਹੈ ਸੁਰੇਸ ਪਾਇ ਕੀਨੋ ਅਭਖੇਕ ਸੁਰ ਮੰਡਲ ਬਿਚਾਰਿ ਕੈ ॥
des des ke nares ddaarai hai sures paae keeno abhakhek sur manddal bichaar kai |
She caused sovereigns of many countries to bow in obeisance to Indra and his coronation ceremony was thoughtfully performed by the assembly of gods.,
ਈਹਾ ਭਈ ਗੁਪਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਿ ਜਾਇ ਤਹਾ ਭਈ ਜਹਾ ਬੈਠੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿਅੰਬਰਿ ਕੋ ਡਾਰਿ ਕੈ ॥੫੨॥
eehaa bhee gupat pragatt jaae tahaa bhee jahaa baitthe har harianbar ko ddaar kai |52|
In this way, the goddess disappeared from here and manifested herself there, where the god Shiva was seated on the lion-skin.52.,

She killed the demons and destroyed them for the well-being of the saints.53.,

ਯਾ ਤੇ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਭਏ ਹੈ ਮਹਾਂ ਮੁਨਿ ਦੇਵਨ ਕੇ ਤਪ ਮੈ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਵੈਂ ॥
yaa te prasan bhe hai mahaan mun devan ke tap mai sukh paavain |
The great sages became pleased and received comfort in meditating on the gods.,
ਜਗ︀ਯ ਕਰੈ ਇਕ ਬੇਦ ਰਰੈ ਭਵ ਤਾਪ ਹਰੈ ਮਿਲਿ ਧਿਆਨਹਿ ਲਾਵੈਂ ॥
jagay karai ik bed rarai bhav taap harai mil dhiaaneh laavain |
The sacrifices are being performed, the Vedas are being recited and for the removal of suffering, contemplation is being done together.,
ਝਾਲਰ ਤਾਲ ਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗ ਉਪੰਗ ਰਬਾਬ ਲੀਏ ਸੁਰ ਸਾਜ ਮਿਲਾਵੈਂ ॥
jhaalar taal mridang upang rabaab lee sur saaj milaavain |
The tunes of various musical instruments like cymbals big and small, trumpet, kettledrum and Rabab are being made harmonies.,
ਕਿੰਨਰ ਗੰਧ੍ਰਬ ਗਾਨ ਕਰੈ ਗਨਿ ਜਛ ਅਪਛਰ ਨਿਰਤ ਦਿਖਾਵੈਂ ॥੫੪॥
kinar gandhrab gaan karai gan jachh apachhar nirat dikhaavain |54|
Somewhere the Kinnars and Gandharvas are singing and somewhere the Ganas, Yakshas and Apsaras are dancing.54.,
ਸੰਖਨ ਕੀ ਧੁਨ ਘੰਟਨ ਕੀ ਕਰਿ ਫੂਲਨ ਕੀ ਬਰਖਾ ਬਰਖਾਵੈਂ ॥
sankhan kee dhun ghanttan kee kar foolan kee barakhaa barakhaavain |
With the sound of conches and gongs, they are causing the rain of flowers.,
ਆਰਤੀ ਕੋਟਿ ਕਰੈ ਸੁਰ ਸੁੰਦਰ ਪੇਖ ਪੁਰੰਦਰ ਕੇ ਬਲਿ ਜਾਵੈਂ ॥
aaratee kott karai sur sundar pekh purandar ke bal jaavain |
Millions of gods fully decorated, are performing aarti (circumambulation) and seeing Indra, they show intense devotion.,
ਦਾਨਤਿ ਦਛਨ ਦੈ ਕੈ ਪ੍ਰਦਛਨ ਭਾਲ ਮੈ ਕੁੰਕਮ ਅਛਤ ਲਾਵੈਂ ॥
daanat dachhan dai kai pradachhan bhaal mai kunkam achhat laavain |
Giving gifts and performing circumambulation around Indra, they are applying the frontal –mark of saffron and rice on their foreheads.,
ਹੋਤ ਕੁਲਾਹਲ ਦੇਵ ਪੁਰੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਦੇਵਨ ਕੇ ਕੁਲਿ ਮੰਗਲ ਗਾਵੈਂ ॥੫੫॥
hot kulaahal dev puree mil devan ke kul mangal gaavain |55|
In all the city of gods, there is much excitement and the families of gods are singing songs of feliciations.55.,

ਐਸੇ ਚੰਡ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ਤੇ ਦੇਵਨ ਬਢਿਓ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪ ॥
aise chandd prataap te devan badtio prataap |
In this way, through the Glory of Chandi, the splendour of gods increased.,
ਤੀਨ ਲੋਕ ਜੈ ਜੈ ਕਰੈ ਰਰੈ ਨਾਮ ਸਤਿ ਜਾਪ ॥੫੬॥
teen lok jai jai karai rarai naam sat jaap |56|
All the there worlds are rejoicing and the sound of the recitation of True Name is being heard.56.,
ਇਸੀ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਸੋ ਦੇਵਤਨ ਰਾਜ ਕੀਯੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਮਾਨ ॥
eisee bhaant so devatan raaj keeyo sukh maan |
The gods ruled comfortably like this.,
ਬਹੁਰ ਸੁੰਭ ਨੈਸੁੰਭ ਦੁਇ ਦੈਤ ਬਡੇ ਬਲਵਾਨ ॥੫੭॥
bahur sunbh naisunbh due dait badde balavaan |57|
But after some time, two mighty demons named Sumbh and Nisumbh appeared.57.,
ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਲੋਕ ਕੇ ਰਾਜ ਹਿਤ ਚੜਿ ਧਾਏ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਸੁੰਭ ॥
eindr lok ke raaj hit charr dhaae nrip sunbh |
For conquering the kingdom of Indra, the king Sumbh came forward,
ਸੈਨਾ ਚਤੁਰੰਗਨਿ ਰਚੀ ਪਾਇਕ ਰਥ ਹੈ ਕੁੰਭ ॥੫੮॥
sainaa chaturangan rachee paaeik rath hai kunbh |58|
With his four types of army containing soldiers on foot, in chariots and on elephants.58.,

baajat ddank puree dhun kaan su sank purandar moondat paurai |
Hearing the sound of the war-trumpets and getting dubious in mind, Indra the portals of his citadel.,
ਸੂਰ ਮੈ ਨਾਹਿ ਰਹੀ ਦੁਤਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਕੇ ਜੁਧ ਕੋ ਦੈਤ ਭਏ ਇਕ ਠਉਰੈ ॥
soor mai naeh rahee dut dekh ke judh ko dait bhe ik tthaurai |
Considering the hesitation of the warriors to come forward for fight, all the demos gathered together at one place.,
ਕਾਪ ਸਮੁੰਦ੍ਰ ਉਠੇ ਸਿਗਰੇ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਰ ਭਈ ਧਰਨੀ ਗਤਿ ਅਉਰੈ ॥
kaap samundr utthe sigare bahu bhaar bhee dharanee gat aaurai |
Seeing their gathering, the oceans trembled and the movement of the earth changed with heavy burden.,
ਮੇਰੁ ਹਲਿਓ ਦਹਲਿਓ ਸੁਰ ਲੋਕ ਜਬੈ ਦਲ ਸੁੰਭ ਨਿਸੁੰਭ ਕੇ ਦਉਰੈ ॥੫੯॥
mer halio dahalio sur lok jabai dal sunbh nisunbh ke daurai |59|
Seeing the forces of Sumbh and Nisumbh running. Sumeru mountain moved and the world of gods became agitated.59.,

ਦੇਵ ਸਭੈ ਮਿਲਿ ਕੇ ਤਬੈ ਗਏ ਸਕ੍ਰ ਪਹਿ ਧਾਇ ॥

All the gods then went running to Indra.,
ਕਹਿਓ ਦੈਤ ਆਏ ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਕੀਜੈ ਕਹਾ ਉਪਾਇ ॥੬੦॥
kahio dait aae prabal keejai kahaa upaae |60|
They asked him to take some steps because of the conquest of powerful demos.60.,
ਸੁਨਿ ਕੋਪਿਓ ਸੁਰਪਾਲ ਤਬ ਕੀਨੋ ਜੁਧ ਉਪਾਇ ॥
sun kopio surapaal tab keeno judh upaae |
Hearing this, the king of gods got furious and began to take steps for waging war.,
ਸੇਖ ਦੇਵ ਗਨ ਜੇ ਹੁਤੇ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਲੀਏ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥੬੧॥
sekh dev gan je hute te sabh lee bulaae |61|

The Lord of the world, in order to lighten the burden of the earth, brought about this war.,
ਗਰਜੈ ਮਦਮਤ ਕਰੀ ਬਦਰਾ ਬਗ ਪੰਤਿ ਲਸੈ ਜਨ ਦੰਤ ਗਟਾ ॥
garajai madamat karee badaraa bag pant lasai jan dant gattaa |
This intoxicated elephants began to trumpet like the clouds and their tusks appeared like the queues of cranes.,
ਪਹਰੈ ਤਨਤ੍ਰਾਨ ਫਿਰੈ ਤਹ ਬੀਰ ਲੀਏ ਬਰਛੀ ਕਰਿ ਬਿਜੁ ਛਟਾ ॥
paharai tanatraan firai teh beer lee barachhee kar bij chhattaa |
Wearing their armour and holding daggers in their hands, the warriors seemed like luster of lightning.,
ਦਲ ਦੈਤਨ ਕੋ ਅਰਿ ਦੇਵਨ ਪੈ ਉਮਡਿਓ ਮਾਨੋ ਘੋਰ ਘਮੰਡ ਘਟਾ ॥੬੨॥
dal daitan ko ar devan pai umaddio maano ghor ghamandd ghattaa |62|
