ਲਾਲ ਹੀਰਨ ਕੇ ਧਰੇ ਜਿਹ ਸੀਸ ਪੈ ਬਹੁ ਹਾਰ ॥
laal heeran ke dhare jih sees pai bahu haar |
He, who is wearing the handsome necklaces of rubies and diamonds
ਸ੍ਵਰਣੀ ਕਿੰਕਣਿ ਸੌ ਛਕ ਗਜ ਰਾਜ ਪਬਾਕਾਰ ॥
svaranee kinkan sau chhak gaj raaj pabaakaar |
Whose large-sized elephant is wearing very cleanly the golden chain
ਦੁਰਦ ਰੂੜ ਦਰਿਦ੍ਰ ਨਾਮ ਸੁ ਬੀਰ ਹੈ ਸੁਨਿ ਭੂਪ ॥
durad roorr daridr naam su beer hai sun bhoop |
O king! the warrior mounting the elephant is named Daridra (lethargy)
ਕਉਨ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਜੀਤ ਹੈ ਰਣ ਆਨਿ ਰਾਜ ਸਰੂਪ ॥੨੦੨॥
kaun taa te jeet hai ran aan raaj saroop |202|
Who will be able to fight with him in the war?202.
ਜਰਕਸੀ ਕੇ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਹੈ ਅਰੁ ਪਰਮ ਬਾਜਾਰੂੜ ॥
jarakasee ke basatr hai ar param baajaaroorr |
ਪਰਮ ਰੂਪ ਪਵਿਤਰ ਗਾਤ ਅਛਿਜ ਰੂਪ ਅਗੂੜ ॥
param roop pavitar gaat achhij roop agoorr |
He, who is wearing the garments of brocade and is riding on the horse, his beauty is eternal
ਛਤ੍ਰ ਧਰਮ ਧਰੇ ਮਹਾ ਭਟ ਬੰਸ ਕੀ ਜਿਹ ਲਾਜ ॥
chhatr dharam dhare mahaa bhatt bans kee jih laaj |
He has the canopy of Dharma on his head and is famous for the tradition and honour of his clan
ਸੰਕ ਨਾਮਾ ਸੂਰ ਸੋ ਸਬ ਸੂਰ ਹੈ ਸਿਰਤਾਜ ॥੨੦੩॥
sank naamaa soor so sab soor hai sirataaj |203|
The name of this warrior is Shanka (doubt) and he is the chief of all the warriors.203.
ਪਿੰਗ ਬਾਜ ਨਹੇ ਰਥੈ ਸਹਿ ਅਡਿਗ ਬੀਰ ਅਖੰਡ ॥
ping baaj nahe rathai seh addig beer akhandd |
This rider of the brown horse is the unfailing and complete warrior
ਅੰਤ ਰੂਪ ਧਰੇ ਮਨੋ ਅਛਿਜ ਗਾਤ ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡ ॥
ant roop dhare mano achhij gaat prachandd |
He has assumed a powerful form and his indestructible body is like doomsday
ਨਾਮ ਸੂਰ ਅਸੋਭ ਤਾ ਕਹ ਜਾਨਹੀ ਸਭ ਲੋਕ ॥
naam soor asobh taa keh jaanahee sabh lok |
This warrior named Shaurai (gratification) is known by all people
ਕਉਨ ਰਾਵ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਹੈ ਜੁ ਨ ਮਾਨਿ ਹੈ ਇਹ ਸੋਕ ॥੨੦੪॥
kaun raav bibek hai ju na maan hai ih sok |204|
There is no such Vivek (knowledge), who will not be sorrowful on its dearth.204.
ਭੁਜੰਗ ਪ੍ਰਯਾਤ ਛੰਦ ॥

ਸਜੇ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਬਾਜੀ ਰਥੰ ਜਾਸੁ ਜਾਨੋ ॥
saje sayaam baajee rathan jaas jaano |
ਮਹਾ ਜੰਗ ਜੋਧਾ ਅਜੈ ਤਾਸੁ ਮਾਨੋ ॥
mahaa jang jodhaa ajai taas maano |
He, whose black horses and chariots are decorated, he is known as the great unconquerable warrior
ਅਸੰਤੁਸਟ ਨਾਮ ਮਹਾਬੀਰ ਸੋਹੈ ॥
asantusatt naam mahaabeer sohai |
ਤਿਹੂੰ ਲੋਕ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਬਡੋ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਮੋਹੈ ॥੨੦੫॥
tihoon lok jaa ko baddo traas mohai |205|
This warrior is named Asantushta (Dissatisfaction), from whom all the three world remain fearful.205.
ਚੜ︀ਯੋ ਤਤ ਤਾਜੀ ਸਿਰਾਜੀਤ ਸੋਭੈ ॥
charrayo tat taajee siraajeet sobhai |
ਸਿਰੰ ਜੈਤ ਪਤ੍ਰੰ ਲਖੇ ਚੰਦ੍ਰ ਛੋਭੈ ॥
siran jait patran lakhe chandr chhobhai |
Rising on a restless horse and wearing aigrette on his head with his canopy of victory over his head, he caused the moon to feel shy,
ਅਨਾਸ ਊਚ ਨਾਮਾ ਮਹਾ ਸੂਰ ਸੋਹੈ ॥
anaas aooch naamaa mahaa soor sohai |
ਬਡੋ ਛਤ੍ਰਧਾਰੀ ਧਰੈ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਜੋ ਹੈ ॥੨੦੬॥
baddo chhatradhaaree dharai chhatr jo hai |206|
This great warrior named Naash (imperishable) looks splendid he is a very great Soverign and very powerful.206.
ਰਥੰ ਸੇਤ ਬਾਜੀ ਸਿਰਾਜੀਤ ਸੋਹੈ ॥
rathan set baajee siraajeet sohai |
ਲਖੇ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਬਾਜੀ ਤਰੈ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟ ਕੋ ਹੈ ॥
lakhe indr baajee tarai drisatt ko hai |
Seeing the chariot of white horses, Indra also gets wonder-struck
ਹਠੀ ਬਾਬਰੀ ਕੋ ਹਿੰਸਾ ਨਾਮ ਜਾਨੋ ॥
hatthee baabaree ko hinsaa naam jaano |
ਮਹਾ ਜੰਗ ਜੋਧਾ ਅਜੈ ਲੋਕ ਮਾਨੋ ॥੨੦੭॥
mahaa jang jodhaa ajai lok maano |207|
The name of hat persistent warrior is Hinsa (violence) and that great warrior is known as unconquerable in all the worlds.207.
ਸੁਭੰ ਸੰਦਲੀ ਬਾਜ ਰਾਜੀ ਸਿਰਾਜੀ ॥
subhan sandalee baaj raajee siraajee |
ਲਖੇ ਰੂਪ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਲਜੈ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਬਾਜੀ ॥
lakhe roop taa ko lajai indr baajee |
Here are pretty horses like sandal, seeing whom the horses on Indra feel shy this great warrior is Kumantra (bad counsel),
ਕੁਮੰਤੰ ਮਹਾ ਜੰਗ ਜੋਧਾ ਜੁਝਾਰੰ ॥
kumantan mahaa jang jodhaa jujhaaran |
ਜਲੰ ਵਾ ਥਲੰ ਜੇਣ ਜਿਤੇ ਬਰਿਆਰੰ ॥੨੦੮॥
jalan vaa thalan jen jite bariaaran |208|
Who has conquered the warriors at all places in water and on plain.208.
ਚੜ︀ਯੋ ਬਾਜ ਤਾਜੀ ਕੋਪਤੰ ਸਰੂਪੰ ॥
charrayo baaj taajee kopatan saroopan |
ਧਰੇ ਚਰਮ ਬਰਮੰ ਬਿਸਾਲੰ ਅਨੂਪੰ ॥
dhare charam baraman bisaalan anoopan |
The pigeon-shaped warrior, riding on a restless horse and a unique wearer of the armour of leather,
ਧੁਜਾ ਬਧ ਸਿਧੰ ਅਲਜਾ ਜੁਝਾਰੰ ॥
dhujaa badh sidhan alajaa jujhaaran |
ਬਡੋ ਜੰਗ ਜੋਧਾ ਸੁ ਕ੍ਰੁਧੀ ਬਰਾਰੰ ॥੨੦੯॥
baddo jang jodhaa su krudhee baraaran |209|
With banner tie up, this is the warrior named Alajja (shamelessness) he is a powerful one and his anger is dreadful.209.
ਧਰੇ ਛੀਨ ਬਸਤ੍ਰੰ ਮਲੀਨੰ ਦਰਿਦ੍ਰੀ ॥
dhare chheen basatran maleenan daridree |
ਧੁਜਾ ਫਾਟ ਬਸਤ੍ਰੰ ਸੁ ਧਾਰੇ ਉਪਦ੍ਰੀ ॥
dhujaa faatt basatran su dhaare upadree |
ਮਹਾ ਸੂਰ ਚੋਰੀ ਕਰੋਰੀ ਸਮਾਨੰ ॥
mahaa soor choree karoree samaanan |
ਲਸੈ ਤੇਜ ਐਸੋ ਲਜੈ ਦੇਖਿ ਸ੍ਵਾਨੰ ॥੨੧੦॥
lasai tej aiso lajai dekh svaanan |210|
Wearing dirty clothes like lazy persons, with torn banner, the great rioter, this grat warrior is known by the name of Chori (theft) seeing his glory, the dog feels shy.210.
ਫਟੇ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਰਬੰ ਸਬੈ ਅੰਗ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
fatte basatr saraban sabai ang dhaare |
ਬਧੇ ਸੀਸ ਜਾਰੀ ਬੁਰੀ ਅਰਧ ਜਾਰੇ ॥
badhe sees jaaree buree aradh jaare |
Wearing all the torn clothes, having tied deceit on his head,
ਚੜ︀ਯੋ ਭੀਮ ਭੈਸੰ ਮਹਾ ਭੀਮ ਰੂਪੰ ॥
charrayo bheem bhaisan mahaa bheem roopan |
ਬਿਭੈਚਾਰ ਜੋਧਾ ਕਹੋ ਤਾਸ ਭੂਪੰ ॥੨੧੧॥
bibhaichaar jodhaa kaho taas bhoopan |211|
Half-burnt, sitting on a large-sized male buffalo, this large-sized great fighter is named Vyabhichar (fornication).211.
ਸਭੈ ਸਿਆਮ ਬਰਣੰ ਸਿਰੰ ਸੇਤ ਏਕੰ ॥
sabhai siaam baranan siran set ekan |
ਨਹੇ ਗਰਧਪੰ ਸ੍ਰਯੰਦਨੇਕੰ ਅਨੇਕੰ ॥
nahe garadhapan srayandanekan anekan |
The warrior with complete black body and white head, in whose chariot the asses are yoked instead of horses,
ਧੁਜਾ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਬਰਣੰ ਭੁਜੰ ਭੀਮ ਰੂਪੰ ॥
dhujaa sayaam baranan bhujan bheem roopan |
ਸਰੰ ਸ੍ਰੋਣਿਤੰ ਏਕ ਅਛੇਕ ਕੂਪੰ ॥੨੧੨॥
saran sronitan ek achhek koopan |212|
Whose banner is black and arms are extremely powerful, he seems to be waving like the tank of blood.212.
ਮਹਾ ਜੋਧ ਦਾਰਿਦ੍ਰ ਨਾਮਾ ਜੁਝਾਰੰ ॥
mahaa jodh daaridr naamaa jujhaaran |
ਧਰੇ ਚਰਮ ਬਰਮੰ ਸੁ ਪਾਣੰ ਕੁਠਾਰੰ ॥
dhare charam baraman su paanan kutthaaran |
The name of this great warrior is Daridra (Lethargy) he is wearing the armour of leather and has caught and axe in his hand
ਬਡੋ ਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਜੋਧੀ ਕਰੋਧੀ ਕਰਾਲੰ ॥
baddo chitr jodhee karodhee karaalan |
ਤਜੈ ਨਾਸਕਾ ਨੈਨ ਧੂਮ੍ਰੰ ਬਰਾਲੰ ॥੨੧੩॥
tajai naasakaa nain dhoomran baraalan |213|
He is extremely angry warrior and the awful smoke is emanating from his nose.213.

merai heearai ratan naam har basiaa gur haath dhario merai maathaa |
The Jewel of the Lord's Name abides within my heart; the Guru has placed His hand on my forehead.
ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੇ ਕਿਲਬਿਖ ਦੁਖ ਉਤਰੇ ਗੁਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੀਓ ਰਿਨੁ ਲਾਥਾ ॥੧॥
janam janam ke kilabikh dukh utare gur naam deeo rin laathaa |1|
The sins and pains of countless incarnations have been cast out. The Guru has blessed me with the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and my debt has been paid off. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਭਜੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਭਿ ਅਰਥਾ ॥
mere man bhaj raam naam sabh arathaa |
O my mind, vibrate the Lord's Name, and all your affairs shall be resolved.
ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur poorai har naam drirraaeaa bin naavai jeevan birathaa | rahaau |
The Perfect Guru has implanted the Lord's Name within me; without the Name, life is useless. ||Pause||
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੂੜ ਭਏ ਹੈ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਮੋਹ ਮਾਇਆ ਨਿਤ ਫਾਥਾ ॥
bin gur moorr bhe hai manamukh te moh maaeaa nit faathaa |
Without the Guru, the self-willed manmukhs are foolish and ignorant; they are forever entangled in emotional attachment to Maya.
ਤਿਨ ਸਾਧੂ ਚਰਣ ਨ ਸੇਵੇ ਕਬਹੂ ਤਿਨ ਸਭੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਕਾਥਾ ॥੨॥
tin saadhoo charan na seve kabahoo tin sabh janam akaathaa |2|
They never serve the feet of the Holy; their lives are totally useless. ||2||
ਜਿਨ ਸਾਧੂ ਚਰਣ ਸਾਧ ਪਗ ਸੇਵੇ ਤਿਨ ਸਫਲਿਓ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਨਾਥਾ ॥
jin saadhoo charan saadh pag seve tin safalio janam sanaathaa |
Those who serve at the feet of the Holy, the feet of the Holy, their lives are made fruitful, and they belong to the Lord.
ਮੋ ਕਉ ਕੀਜੈ ਦਾਸੁ ਦਾਸ ਦਾਸਨ ਕੋ ਹਰਿ ਦਇਆ ਧਾਰਿ ਜਗੰਨਾਥਾ ॥੩॥
mo kau keejai daas daas daasan ko har deaa dhaar jaganaathaa |3|
Make me the slave of the slave of the slaves of the Lord; bless me with Your Mercy, O Lord of the Universe. ||3||
ਹਮ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਗਿਆਨਹੀਨ ਅਗਿਆਨੀ ਕਿਉ ਚਾਲਹ ਮਾਰਗਿ ਪੰਥਾ ॥
ham andhule giaanaheen agiaanee kiau chaalah maarag panthaa |
I am blind, ignorant and totally without wisdom; how can I walk on the Path?
ਹਮ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਕਉ ਗੁਰ ਅੰਚਲੁ ਦੀਜੈ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਚਲਹ ਮਿਲੰਥਾ ॥੪॥੧॥
ham andhule kau gur anchal deejai jan naanak chalah milanthaa |4|1|
I am blind - O Guru, please let me grasp the hem of Your robe, so that servant Nanak may walk in harmony with You. ||4||1||

ਹੀਰਾ ਲਾਲੁ ਅਮੋਲਕੁ ਹੈ ਭਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਾਹਕ ਮੀਕਾ ਕਾਖਾ ॥
heeraa laal amolak hai bhaaree bin gaahak meekaa kaakhaa |
A jewel or a diamond may be very valuable and heavy, but without a purchaser, it is worth only straw.
ਰਤਨ ਗਾਹਕੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਦੇਖਿਓ ਤਬ ਰਤਨੁ ਬਿਕਾਨੋ ਲਾਖਾ ॥੧॥
ratan gaahak gur saadhoo dekhio tab ratan bikaano laakhaa |1|
When the Holy Guru, the Purchaser, saw this jewel, He purchased it for hundreds of thousands of dollars. ||1||
ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਗੁਪਤ ਹੀਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖਾ ॥
merai man gupat heer har raakhaa |
The Lord has kept this jewel hidden within my mind.
ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਓ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਹੀਰੁ ਪਰਾਖਾ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
deen deaal milaaeo gur saadhoo gur miliai heer paraakhaa | rahaau |
The Lord, merciful to the meek, led me to meet the Holy Guru; meeting the Guru, I came to appreciate this jewel. ||Pause||
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਕੋਠੀ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਤਿਨ ਘਰਿ ਰਤਨੁ ਨ ਲਾਖਾ ॥
manamukh kotthee agiaan andheraa tin ghar ratan na laakhaa |
The rooms of the self-willed manmukhs are dark with ignorance; in their homes, the jewel is not visible.
ਤੇ ਊਝੜਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਮੁਏ ਗਾਵਾਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਭੁਅੰਗ ਬਿਖੁ ਚਾਖਾ ॥੨॥
te aoojharr bharam mue gaavaaree maaeaa bhuang bikh chaakhaa |2|
Those fools die, wandering in the wilderness, eating the poison of the snake, Maya. ||2||
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਧ ਮੇਲਹੁ ਜਨ ਨੀਕੇ ਹਰਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਸਰਣਿ ਹਮ ਰਾਖਾ ॥
har har saadh melahu jan neeke har saadhoo saran ham raakhaa |
O Lord, Har, Har, let me meet the humble, holy beings; O Lord, keep me in the Sanctuary of the Holy.
ਹਰਿ ਅੰਗੀਕਾਰੁ ਕਰਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਹਮ ਪਰੇ ਭਾਗਿ ਤੁਮ ਪਾਖਾ ॥੩॥
har angeekaar karahu prabh suaamee ham pare bhaag tum paakhaa |3|
O Lord, make me Your own; O God, Lord and Master, I have hurried to Your side. ||3||
ਜਿਹਵਾ ਕਿਆ ਗੁਣ ਆਖਿ ਵਖਾਣਹ ਤੁਮ ਵਡ ਅਗਮ ਵਡ ਪੁਰਖਾ ॥
jihavaa kiaa gun aakh vakhaanah tum vadd agam vadd purakhaa |
What Glorious Virtues of Yours can I speak and describe? You are great and unfathomable, the Greatest Being.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ਪਾਖਾਣੁ ਡੁਬਤ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖਾ ॥੪॥੨॥
jan naanak har kirapaa dhaaree paakhaan ddubat har raakhaa |4|2|
The Lord has bestowed His Mercy on servant Nanak; He has saved the sinking stone. ||4||2||
