ਮਛ ਪੇਟ ਕਿਹੂੰ ਨ ਫਟੇ ਸਬ ਕਰ ਹਟੇ ਉਪਾਇ ॥
machh pett kihoon na fatte sab kar hatte upaae |
All of them used their power, but the belly of the fish could not be ripped,
ਗ︀ਯਾਨ ਗੁਰੂ ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਹੁਤੋ ਪੂਛਾ ਤਹਿ ਬਨਾਇ ॥੧੪੫॥
gayaan guroo tin ko huto poochhaa teh banaae |145|
Then the king tried to ask the knowledge- Guru.145.

TOTAK STANZA
ਭਟ ਤ︀ਯਾਗ ਕੈ ਸਬ ਗਰਬ ॥
bhatt tayaag kai sab garab |
All the warriors, forsaking their pride,
ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਤੀਰ ਬੋਲੋ ਸਰਬ ॥
nrip teer bolo sarab |
Came near the king and spoke,
ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਪੂਛੀਐ ਗੁਰ ਗ︀ਯਾਨ ॥
nrip poochheeai gur gayaan |
“O king! ask only the knowledge-Guru,
ਕਹਿ ਦੇਇ ਤੋਹਿ ਬਿਧਾਨ ॥੧੪੬॥
keh dee tohi bidhaan |146|
He will only tell us all the method.”146.
ਬਿਧਿ ਪੂਰਿ ਕੈ ਸੁਭ ਚਾਰ ॥
bidh poor kai subh chaar |
ਅਰੁ ਗ︀ਯਾਨ ਰੀਤਿ ਬਿਚਾਰਿ ॥
ar gayaan reet bichaar |
The king reflected methodically and invoked knowledge and said,
ਗੁਰ ਭਾਖੀਐ ਮੁਹਿ ਭੇਵ ॥
gur bhaakheeai muhi bhev |
ਕਿਮ ਦੇਖੀਐ ਮੁਨਿ ਦੇਵ ॥੧੪੭॥
kim dekheeai mun dev |147|
“O chief Guru! tell me the mystery as to how the sage can be seen ?”147.
ਗੁਰ ਗ︀ਯਾਨ ਬੋਲ︀ਯੋ ਬੈਨ ॥
gur gayaan bolayo bain |
ਸੁਭ ਬਾਚ ਸੋ ਸੁਖ ਦੈਨ ॥
subh baach so sukh dain |
Then the knowledge-Guru uttered these ambrosial words,
ਛੁਰਕਾ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਲੈ ਹਾਥ ॥
chhurakaa bibek lai haath |
ਇਹ ਫਾਰੀਐ ਤਿਹ ਸਾਥ ॥੧੪੮॥
eih faareeai tih saath |148|
”O king! Take the knife of Viveka (Discrimination) and tear off this fish.”148.
ਤਬ ਕਾਮ ਤੈਸੋ ਈ ਕੀਨ ॥
tab kaam taiso ee keen |
ਗੁਰ ਗ︀ਯਾਨ ਜ︀ਯੋਂ ਸਿਖ ਦੀਨ ॥
gur gayaan jayon sikh deen |
Then, whatever the Guru had instructed, it was done accordingly
ਗਹਿ ਕੈ ਬਿਬੇਕਹਿ ਹਾਥ ॥
geh kai bibekeh haath |
ਤਿਹ ਚੀਰਿਆ ਤਿਹ ਸਾਥ ॥੧੪੯॥
tih cheeriaa tih saath |149|
After adopting Viveka, that fish was ripped.149.
ਜਬ ਚੀਰਿ ਪੇਟ ਬਨਾਇ ॥
jab cheer pett banaae |
ਤਬ ਦੇਖਏ ਜਗ ਰਾਇ ॥
tab dekhe jag raae |
When the belly of the fish was ripped, then that great sage was seen
ਜੁਤ ਧ︀ਯਾਨ ਮੁੰਦ੍ਰਤ ਨੈਨ ॥
jut dhayaan mundrat nain |
ਬਿਨੁ ਆਸ ਚਿਤ ਨ ਡੁਲੈਨ ॥੧੫੦॥
bin aas chit na ddulain |150|
He was sitting there with closed eyes and concentration, detaching himself from all desires.150.
ਸਤ ਧਾਤ ਪੁਤ੍ਰਾ ਕੀਨ ॥
sat dhaat putraa keen |
ਮੁਨਿ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਤਰ ਧਰ ਦੀਨ ॥
mun drisatt tar dhar deen |
Then a sheet made of seven metals was put under the view of the sage
ਜਬ ਛੂਟਿ ਰਿਖਿ ਕੇ ਧ︀ਯਾਨ ॥
jab chhoott rikh ke dhayaan |
ਤਬ ਭਏ ਭਸਮ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨ ॥੧੫੧॥
tab bhe bhasam pramaan |151|
When the contemplation of the sage broke, the sheet was reduced to ashes by the sight of the sage.151.
ਜੋ ਅਉਰ ਦ੍ਰਿਗ ਤਰਿ ਆਉ ॥
jo aaur drig tar aau |
ਸੋਊ ਜੀਅਤ ਜਾਨ ਨ ਪਾਉ ॥
soaoo jeeat jaan na paau |
If anything else had come within his sight (at that time),
ਸੋ ਭਸਮ ਹੋਵਤ ਜਾਨੁ ॥
so bhasam hovat jaan |
ਬਿਨੁ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਭਗਤ ਨ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੧੫੨॥
bin preet bhagat na maan |152|
It could not have been saved from being reduced to ashes there can be no devotion without true love.152.
ਜਬ ਭਏ ਪੁਤ੍ਰਾ ਭਸਮ ॥
jab bhe putraa bhasam |
ਜਨ ਅੰਧਤਾ ਰਵਿ ਰਸਮ ॥
jan andhataa rav rasam |
When that sheet was reduced to ashes like the destruction of the darkness by the sun,
ਪੁਨਿ ਪੂਛੀਆ ਤਿਹਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
pun poochheea tihaa jaae |
ਮੁਨਿ ਰਾਜ ਭੇਦ ਬਤਾਇ ॥੧੫੩॥
mun raaj bhed bataae |153|
Then the king went to that sage and told him the secret of his coming.153.
ਧਨਾਸਰੀ ਛੰਤ ਮਹਲਾ ੪ ਘਰੁ ੧ ॥

ੴ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥

One Universal Creator God. By The Grace Of The True Guru:
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਜੀਉ ॥
har jeeo kripaa kare taa naam dhiaaeeai jeeo |
When the Dear Lord grants His Grace, one meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੁਭਾਇ ਸਹਜਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਈਐ ਜੀਉ ॥
satigur milai subhaae sehaj gun gaaeeai jeeo |
Meeting the True Guru, through loving faith and devotion, one intuitively sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ਵਿਗਸੈ ਸਦਾ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾ ਆਪਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਭਾਵਏ ॥
gun gaae vigasai sadaa anadin jaa aap saache bhaave |
Singing His Glorious Praises continually, night and day, one blossoms forth, when it is pleasing to the True Lord.
ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਤਜੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਹਜਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵਏ ॥
ahankaar haumai tajai maaeaa sehaj naam samaave |
Egotism, self-conceit and Maya are forsaken, and he is intuitively absorbed into the Naam.
ਆਪਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੋਈ ਆਪਿ ਦੇਇ ਤ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
aap karataa kare soee aap dee ta paaeeai |
The Creator Himself acts; when He gives, then we receive.
ਹਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥
har jeeo kripaa kare taa naam dhiaaeeai jeeo |1|
When the Dear Lord grants His Grace, we meditate on the Naam. ||1||
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਨੇਹੁ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੈ ਜੀਉ ॥
andar saachaa nehu poore satigurai jeeo |
Deep within, I feel true love for the Perfect True Guru.
ਹਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਸੇਵੀ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਮੈ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਜੀਉ ॥
hau tis sevee din raat mai kade na veesarai jeeo |
I serve Him day and night; I never forget Him.
ਕਦੇ ਨ ਵਿਸਾਰੀ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਮੑਾਰੀ ਜਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਲਈ ਤਾ ਜੀਵਾ ॥
kade na visaaree anadin samaaree jaa naam lee taa jeevaa |
I never forget Him; I remember Him night and day. When I chant the Naam, then I live.
ਸ੍ਰਵਣੀ ਸੁਣੀ ਤ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਵਾ ॥
sravanee sunee ta ihu man tripatai guramukh amrit peevaa |
With my ears, I hear about Him, and my mind is satisfied. As Gurmukh, I drink in the Ambrosial Nectar.
ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮੇਲੇ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਬਿਬੇਕ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਿਚਰੈ ॥
nadar kare taa satigur mele anadin bibek budh bicharai |
If He bestows His Glance of Grace, then I shall meet the True Guru; my discriminating intellect would contemplate Him, night and day.
ਅੰਦਰਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਨੇਹੁ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੈ ॥੨॥
andar saachaa nehu poore satigurai |2|
Deep within, I feel true love for the Perfect True Guru. ||2||
ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਭਾਗਿ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਆਵਏ ਜੀਉ ॥
satasangat milai vaddabhaag taa har ras aave jeeo |
By great good fortune, one joins the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation; then, one comes to savor the subtle essence of the Lord.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ਤ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵਏ ਜੀਉ ॥
anadin rahai liv laae ta sehaj samaave jeeo |
Night and day, he remains lovingly focused on the Lord; he merges in celestial peace.
ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਦਾ ਅਤੀਤੁ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥
sehaj samaavai taa har man bhaavai sadaa ateet bairaagee |
Merging in celestial peace, he becomes pleasing to the Lord's Mind; he remains forever unattached and untouched.
ਹਲਤਿ ਪਲਤਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਜਗ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
halat palat sobhaa jag antar raam naam liv laagee |
He receives honor in this world and the next, lovingly focused on the Lord's Name.
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਦੁਹਾ ਤੇ ਮੁਕਤਾ ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਭਾਵਏ ॥
harakh sog duhaa te mukataa jo prabh kare su bhaave |
He is liberated from both pleasure and pain; he is pleased by whatever God does.
ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਭਾਗਿ ਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਆਵਏ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥
satasangat milai vaddabhaag taa har ras aave jeeo |3|

doojai bhaae dukh hoe manamukh jam johiaa jeeo |
In the love of duality, there is pain and suffering; the Messenger of Death eyes the self-willed manmukhs.
ਹਾਇ ਹਾਇ ਕਰੇ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਦੁਖਿ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਜੀਉ ॥
haae haae kare din raat maaeaa dukh mohiaa jeeo |
They cry and howl, day and night, caught by the pain of Maya.
ਮਾਇਆ ਦੁਖਿ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਹਿਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਮੇਰੀ ਕਰਤ ਵਿਹਾਵਏ ॥
maaeaa dukh mohiaa haumai rohiaa meree meree karat vihaave |
Caught by the pain of Maya, provoked by his ego, he passes his life crying out, "Mine, mine!".
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਦੇਇ ਤਿਸੁ ਚੇਤੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਅੰਤਿ ਗਇਆ ਪਛੁਤਾਵਏ ॥
jo prabh dee tis chetai naahee ant geaa pachhutaave |
He does not remember God, the Giver, and in the end, he departs regretting and repenting.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੋ ਸਾਥਿ ਨ ਚਾਲੈ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਕਲਤ੍ਰ ਮਾਇਆ ਧੋਹਿਆ ॥
bin naavai ko saath na chaalai putr kalatr maaeaa dhohiaa |
Without the Name, nothing shall go along with him; not his children, spouse or the enticements of Maya.
ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਜਮਿ ਜੋਹਿਆ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥
doojai bhaae dukh hoe manamukh jam johiaa jeeo |4|

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਲੇਹੁ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਮਹਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਜੀਉ ॥
kar kirapaa lehu milaae mehal har paaeaa jeeo |
Granting His Grace, the Lord has merged me with Himself; I have found the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.
ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਕਰ ਜੋੜਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਇਆ ਜੀਉ ॥
sadaa rahai kar jorr prabh man bhaaeaa jeeo |
I remain standing with my palms pressed together; I have become pleasing to God's Mind.
ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਤਾ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
prabh man bhaavai taa hukam samaavai hukam man sukh paaeaa |
When one is pleasing to God's Mind, then he merges in the Hukam of the Lord's Command; surrendering to His Hukam, he finds peace.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਪਤ ਰਹੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਸਹਜੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
anadin japat rahai din raatee sahaje naam dhiaaeaa |
Night and day, he chants the Lord's Name, day and night; intuitively, naturally, he meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਨਾਮੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵਏ ॥
naamo naam milee vaddiaaee naanak naam man bhaave |
Through the Naam, the glorious greatness of the Naam is obtained; the Naam is pleasing to Nanak's mind.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਲੇਹੁ ਮਿਲਾਇ ਮਹਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਵਏ ਜੀਉ ॥੫॥੧॥
kar kirapaa lehu milaae mehal har paave jeeo |5|1|
Granting His Grace, the Lord has merged me with Himself; I have found the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||5||1||
