ਬਹੁ ਬਰਖ ਬੀਤ ਕਿਨੋ ਬਿਵਾਹਿ ॥
bahu barakh beet kino bivaeh |
ਇਕ ਭਯੋ ਆਨਿ ਅਉਰੈ ਉਛਾਹਿ ॥
eik bhayo aan aaurai uchhaeh |
ਤਿਹ ਗਏ ਧਾਮਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾਦਿ ਆਦਿ ॥
tih ge dhaam brahamaad aad |
ਕਿਨੀ ਸੁ ਸੇਵ ਤ੍ਰੀਯ ਬਹੁ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥੨੨॥
kinee su sev treey bahu prasaad |22|
Several years passed after marriage and once an opportunity arose when Brahma and other gods went to the home of that sage the women of the hermitage of the sage performed great service to them.22.
ਬਹੁ ਧੂਪ ਦੀਪ ਅਰੁ ਅਰਘ ਦਾਨ ॥
bahu dhoop deep ar aragh daan |
ਪਾਦਰਘਿ ਆਦਿ ਕਿਨੇ ਸੁਜਾਨ ॥
paadaragh aad kine sujaan |
The incense was burnt, the lamps were lighted, there were libations and salutations
ਅਵਿਲੋਕਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਤਿਹ ਚਤੁਰ ਬਾਕ ॥
avilok bhagat tih chatur baak |
ਇੰਦ੍ਰਾਦਿ ਬਿਸਨੁ ਬੈਠੇ ਪਿਨਾਕ ॥੨੩॥
eindraad bisan baitthe pinaak |23|
Seeing Indra, Vishnu and Shiva, all the devotees eulogized them.23.
ਅਵਿਲੋਕਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਏ ਰਿਖ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ॥
avilok bhagat bhe rikh prasan |
ਜੋ ਤਿਹੂ ਮਧਿ ਲੋਕਾਨਿ ਧਨਿ ॥
jo tihoo madh lokaan dhan |
Seeing the devotion of the sage, all were pleased and all blessed him
ਕਿਨੋ ਸੁ ਐਸ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਉਚਾਰ ॥
kino su ais brahamaa uchaar |
ਤੈ ਪੁਤ੍ਰਵੰਤ ਹੂਜੋ ਕੁਮਾਰਿ ॥੨੪॥
tai putravant hoojo kumaar |24|
Then Brahma said, “O Kumar! You will be blessed with a son.”24.

Sorat'h, First Mehl:
ਜਿਨੑੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਿਨੑ ਕੇ ਸਾਥ ਤਰੇ ॥
jinaee satigur seviaa piaare tina ke saath tare |
Those who serve the True Guru, O Beloved, their companions are saved as well.
ਤਿਨੑਾ ਠਾਕ ਨ ਪਾਈਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸਨ ਹਰੇ ॥
tinaa tthaak na paaeeai piaare amrit rasan hare |
No one blocks their way, O Beloved, and the Lord's Ambrosial Nectar is on their tongue.
ਬੂਡੇ ਭਾਰੇ ਭੈ ਬਿਨਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਤਾਰੇ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ॥੧॥
boodde bhaare bhai binaa piaare taare nadar kare |1|
Without the Fear of God, they are so heavy that they sink and drown, O Beloved; but the Lord, casting His Glance of Grace, carries them across. ||1||
ਭੀ ਤੂਹੈ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਭੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਸਾਲਾਹ ॥
bhee toohai saalaahanaa piaare bhee teree saalaah |
I ever praise You, O Beloved, I ever sing Your Praises.
ਵਿਣੁ ਬੋਹਿਥ ਭੈ ਡੁਬੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਕੰਧੀ ਪਾਇ ਕਹਾਹ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
vin bohith bhai ddubeeai piaare kandhee paae kahaah |1| rahaau |
Without the boat, one is drowned in the sea of fear, O Beloved; how can I reach the distant shore? ||1||Pause||
ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਾਲਾਹਣਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
saalaahee saalaahanaa piaare doojaa avar na koe |
I praise the Praiseworthy Lord, O Beloved; there is no other one to praise.
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਲਾਹਨਿ ਸੇ ਭਲੇ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਰੰਗੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
mere prabh saalaahan se bhale piaare sabad rate rang hoe |
Those who praise my God are good, O Beloved; they are imbued with the Word of the Shabad, and His Love.
ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਜੇ ਮਿਲੈ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਰਸੁ ਲੈ ਤਤੁ ਵਿਲੋਇ ॥੨॥
tis kee sangat je milai piaare ras lai tat viloe |2|
If I join them, O Beloved, I can churn the essence and so find joy. ||2||
ਪਤਿ ਪਰਵਾਨਾ ਸਾਚ ਕਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਚਾ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥
pat paravaanaa saach kaa piaare naam sachaa neesaan |
The gateway to honor is Truth, O Beloved; it bears the Insignia of the True Name of the Lord.
ਆਇਆ ਲਿਖਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਵਣਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹੁਕਮੀ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥
aaeaa likh lai jaavanaa piaare hukamee hukam pachhaan |
We come into the world, and we depart, with our destiny written and pre-ordained, O Beloved; realize the Command of the Commander.
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਨ ਬੂਝੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਾਚੇ ਸਾਚਾ ਤਾਣੁ ॥੩॥
gur bin hukam na boojheeai piaare saache saachaa taan |3|
Without the Guru, this Command is not understood, O Beloved; True is the Power of the True Lord. ||3||
ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਨਿੰਮਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹੁਕਮੈ ਉਦਰ ਮਝਾਰਿ ॥
hukamai andar ninmiaa piaare hukamai udar majhaar |
By His Command, we are conceived, O Beloved, and by His Command, we grow in the womb.
ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜੰਮਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਊਧਉ ਸਿਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਰਿ ॥
hukamai andar jamiaa piaare aoodhau sir kai bhaar |
By His Command, we are born, O Beloved, head-first, and upside-down.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਜਾਣੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਚਲੈ ਕਾਰਜ ਸਾਰਿ ॥੪॥
guramukh daragah jaaneeai piaare chalai kaaraj saar |4|
The Gurmukh is honored in the Court of the Lord, O Beloved; he departs after resolving his affairs. ||4||
ਹੁਕਮੈ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਆਇਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜਾਦੋ ਜਾਇ ॥
hukamai andar aaeaa piaare hukame jaado jaae |
By His Command, one comes into the world, O Beloved, and by His Will, he goes.
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਬੰਨੑਿ ਚਲਾਈਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਲਹੈ ਸਜਾਇ ॥
hukame bana chalaaeeai piaare manamukh lahai sajaae |
By His Will, some are bound and gagged and driven away, O Beloved; the self-willed manmukhs suffer their punishment.
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥
hukame sabad pachhaaneeai piaare daragah paidhaa jaae |5|
By His Command, the Word of the Shabad, is realized, O Beloved, and one goes to the Court of the Lord robed in honor. ||5||
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਗਣਤ ਗਣਾਈਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਦੋਇ ॥
hukame ganat ganaaeeai piaare hukame haumai doe |
By His Command, some accounts are accounted for, O Beloved; by His Command, some suffer in egotism and duality.
ਹੁਕਮੇ ਭਵੈ ਭਵਾਈਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਅਵਗਣਿ ਮੁਠੀ ਰੋਇ ॥
hukame bhavai bhavaaeeai piaare avagan mutthee roe |
By His Command, one wanders in reincarnation, O Beloved; deceived by sins and demerits, he cries out in his suffering.
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਸਿਞਾਪੈ ਸਾਹ ਕਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥
hukam siyaapai saah kaa piaare sach milai vaddiaaee hoe |6|
If he comes to realize the Command of the Lord's Will, O Beloved, then he is blessed with Truth and Honor. ||6||
ਆਖਣਿ ਅਉਖਾ ਆਖੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਕਿਉ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਉ ॥
aakhan aaukhaa aakheeai piaare kiau suneeai sach naau |
It is so difficult to speak it, O Beloved; how can we speak, and hear, the True Name?
ਜਿਨੑੀ ਸੋ ਸਾਲਾਹਿਆ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹਉ ਤਿਨੑ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥
jinaee so saalaahiaa piaare hau tina balihaarai jaau |
I am a sacrifice to those who praise the Lord, O Beloved.
ਨਾਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਆਂ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਨਦਰੀ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਉ ॥੭॥
naau milai santokheean piaare nadaree mel milaau |7|
I have obtained the Name, and I am satisfied, O Beloved; by His Grace, I am united in His Union. ||7||
ਕਾਇਆ ਕਾਗਦੁ ਜੇ ਥੀਐ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਸਵਾਣੀ ਧਾਰਿ ॥
kaaeaa kaagad je theeai piaare man masavaanee dhaar |
If my body were to become the paper, O Beloved, and my mind the inkpot;
ਲਲਤਾ ਲੇਖਣਿ ਸਚ ਕੀ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਲਿਖਹੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
lalataa lekhan sach kee piaare har gun likhahu veechaar |
and if my tongue became the pen, O Beloved, I would write, and contemplate, the Glorious Praises of the True Lord.
ਧਨੁ ਲੇਖਾਰੀ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਲਿਖੈ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੮॥੩॥
dhan lekhaaree naanakaa piaare saach likhai ur dhaar |8|3|
Blessed is that scribe, O Nanak, who writes the True Name, and enshrines it within his heart. ||8||3||
ਸੋਰਠਿ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਪਹਿਲਾ ਦੁਤੁਕੀ ॥

Sorat'h, First Mehl, Dho-Thukay:
ਤੂ ਗੁਣਦਾਤੌ ਨਿਰਮਲੋ ਭਾਈ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਨਾ ਮਨੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
too gunadaatau niramalo bhaaee niramal naa man hoe |
You are the Giver of virtue, O Immaculate Lord, but my mind is not immaculate, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਹਮ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਨਿਰਗੁਣੇ ਭਾਈ ਤੁਝ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਗੁਣੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥
ham aparaadhee niragune bhaaee tujh hee te gun soe |1|
I am a worthless sinner, O Siblings of Destiny; virtue is obtained from You alone, Lord. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮਾ ਤੂ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੁ ॥
mere preetamaa too karataa kar vekh |
O my Beloved Creator Lord, You create, and You behold.
ਹਉ ਪਾਪੀ ਪਾਖੰਡੀਆ ਭਾਈ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਸੇਖੁ ॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
hau paapee paakhanddeea bhaaee man tan naam visekh | rahaau |
I am a hypocritical sinner, O Siblings of Destiny. Bless my mind and body with Your Name, O Lord. ||Pause||
ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਇਆ ਚਿਤੁ ਮੋਹਿਆ ਭਾਈ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਇ ॥
bikh maaeaa chit mohiaa bhaaee chaturaaee pat khoe |
The poisonous Maya has enticed the consciousness, O Siblings of Destiny; through clever tricks, one loses his honor.
ਚਿਤ ਮਹਿ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਸਚਿ ਵਸੈ ਭਾਈ ਜੇ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸਮੋਇ ॥੨॥
chit meh tthaakur sach vasai bhaaee je gur giaan samoe |2|
The True Lord and Master abides in the consciousness, O Siblings of Destiny, if the Guru's spiritual wisdom permeates it. ||2||
ਰੂੜੌ ਰੂੜੌ ਆਖੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਰੂੜੌ ਲਾਲ ਚਲੂਲੁ ॥
roorrau roorrau aakheeai bhaaee roorrau laal chalool |
Beautiful, beautiful, the Lord is called, O Siblings of Destiny; beautiful, like the deep crimson color of the poppy.
ਜੇ ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਬੈਰਾਗੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਅਭੂਲੁ ॥੩॥
je man har siau bairaageeai bhaaee dar ghar saach abhool |3|
If man loves the Lord with detachment, O Siblings of Destiny, he is judged to be true and infallible in the Lord's court and home. ||3||
ਪਾਤਾਲੀ ਆਕਾਸਿ ਤੂ ਭਾਈ ਘਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਤੂ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
paataalee aakaas too bhaaee ghar ghar too gun giaan |
You are pervading the realms of the underworld and the heavenly skies; Your wisdom and glories are in each and every heart.
ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਭਾਈ ਚੂਕਾ ਮਨਹੁ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥੪॥
gur miliai sukh paaeaa bhaaee chookaa manahu gumaan |4|
Meeting with the Guru, one finds peace, O Siblings of Destiny, and pride is dispelled from the mind. ||4||
ਜਲਿ ਮਲਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਮਾਜੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਭੀ ਮੈਲਾ ਤਨੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
jal mal kaaeaa maajeeai bhaaee bhee mailaa tan hoe |
Scrubbing with water, the body can be cleaned, O Siblings of Destiny, but the body becomes dirty again.
ਗਿਆਨਿ ਮਹਾ ਰਸਿ ਨਾਈਐ ਭਾਈ ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੫॥
giaan mahaa ras naaeeai bhaaee man tan niramal hoe |5|
Bathing in the supreme essence of spiritual wisdom, O Siblings of Destiny, the mind and body become pure. ||5||
ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵਾ ਪੂਜੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਗਉ ਕਿਆ ਦੇਹਿ ॥
devee devaa poojeeai bhaaee kiaa maagau kiaa dehi |
Why worship gods and goddesses, O Siblings of Destiny? What can we ask of them? What can they give us?
ਪਾਹਣੁ ਨੀਰਿ ਪਖਾਲੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਬੂਡਹਿ ਤੇਹਿ ॥੬॥
paahan neer pakhaaleeai bhaaee jal meh booddeh tehi |6|
The stone gods are washed with water, O Siblings of Destiny, but they just sink in the water. ||6||
ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਲਖੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਜਗੁ ਬੂਡੈ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਇ ॥
gur bin alakh na lakheeai bhaaee jag booddai pat khoe |
Without the Guru, the unseen Lord cannot be seen, O Siblings of Destiny; the world is drowning, having lost its honor.
ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਹਾਥਿ ਵਡਾਈਆ ਭਾਈ ਜੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਤੈ ਦੇਇ ॥੭॥
mere tthaakur haath vaddaaeea bhaaee jai bhaavai tai dee |7|
Greatness is in the hands of my Lord and Master, O Siblings of Destiny; as He is pleased, He gives. ||7||
ਬਈਅਰਿ ਬੋਲੈ ਮੀਠੁਲੀ ਭਾਈ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਪਿਰ ਭਾਇ ॥
beear bolai meetthulee bhaaee saach kahai pir bhaae |
That soul-bride, who talks sweetly and speaks the Truth, O Siblings of Destiny, becomes pleasing to her Husband Lord.
ਬਿਰਹੈ ਬੇਧੀ ਸਚਿ ਵਸੀ ਭਾਈ ਅਧਿਕ ਰਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥੮॥
birahai bedhee sach vasee bhaaee adhik rahee har naae |8|
Pierced by His Love, she abides in Truth, O Siblings of Destiny, deeply imbued with the Lord's Name. ||8||
ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਭਾਈ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਬੁਝੈ ਸੁਜਾਨੁ ॥
sabh ko aakhai aapanaa bhaaee gur te bujhai sujaan |
Everyone calls God his own, O Siblings of Destiny, but the all-knowing Lord is known only through the Guru.
ਜੋ ਬੀਧੇ ਸੇ ਊਬਰੇ ਭਾਈ ਸਬਦੁ ਸਚਾ ਨੀਸਾਨੁ ॥੯॥
jo beedhe se aoobare bhaaee sabad sachaa neesaan |9|
Those who are pierced by His Love are saved, O Siblings of Destiny; they bear the Insignia of the True Word of the Shabad. ||9||
ਈਧਨੁ ਅਧਿਕ ਸਕੇਲੀਐ ਭਾਈ ਪਾਵਕੁ ਰੰਚਕ ਪਾਇ ॥
eedhan adhik sakeleeai bhaaee paavak ranchak paae |
A large pile of firewood, O Siblings of Destiny, will burn if a small fire is applied.
ਖਿਨੁ ਪਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਵਸੈ ਭਾਈ ਨਾਨਕ ਮਿਲਣੁ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥੧੦॥੪॥
khin pal naam ridai vasai bhaaee naanak milan subhaae |10|4|
In the same way, if the Naam, the Name of the Lord, dwells in the heart for a moment, even for an instant, O Siblings of Destiny, then one meets the Lord with ease, O Nanak. ||10||4||
