This body-horse was created by the Lord.
ਧੰਨੁ ਮਾਣਸ ਜਨਮੁ ਪੁੰਨਿ ਪਾਈਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
dhan maanas janam pun paaeea raam |
Blessed is human life, which is obtained by virtuous actions.
ਮਾਣਸ ਜਨਮੁ ਵਡ ਪੁੰਨੇ ਪਾਇਆ ਦੇਹ ਸੁ ਕੰਚਨ ਚੰਗੜੀਆ ॥
maanas janam vadd pune paaeaa deh su kanchan changarreea |
Human life is obtained only by the most virtuous actions; this body is radiant and golden.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਚਲੂਲਾ ਪਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਵ ਰੰਗੜੀਆ ॥
guramukh rang chaloolaa paavai har har har nav rangarreea |
The Gurmukh is imbued with the deep red color of the poppy; he is imbued with the new color of the Lord's Name, Har, Har, Har.
ਏਹ ਦੇਹ ਸੁ ਬਾਂਕੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੀਆ ॥
eeh deh su baankee jit har jaapee har har naam suhaaveea |
This body is so very beautiful; it chants the Name of the Lord, and it is adorned with the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਪਾਈ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮਿ ਉਪਾਈਆ ॥੧॥
vaddabhaagee paaee naam sakhaaee jan naanak raam upaaeea |1|
By great good fortune, the body is obtained; the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is its companion; O servant Nanak, the Lord has created it. ||1||
ਦੇਹ ਪਾਵਉ ਜੀਨੁ ਬੁਝਿ ਚੰਗਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
deh paavau jeen bujh changaa raam |
I place the saddle on the body-horse, the saddle of realization of the Good Lord.
ਚੜਿ ਲੰਘਾ ਜੀ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਭੁਇਅੰਗਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
charr langhaa jee bikham bhueiangaa raam |
Riding this horse, I cross over the terrifying world-ocean.
ਬਿਖਮੁ ਭੁਇਅੰਗਾ ਅਨਤ ਤਰੰਗਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਏ ॥
bikham bhueiangaa anat tarangaa guramukh paar langhaae |
The terrifying world-ocean is rocked by countless waves, but the Gurmukh is carried across.
ਹਰਿ ਬੋਹਿਥਿ ਚੜਿ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਲੰਘੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਖੇਵਟੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਤਰਾਏ ॥
har bohith charr vaddabhaagee langhai gur khevatt sabad taraae |
Embarking upon the boat of the Lord, the very fortunate ones cross over; the Guru, the Boatman, carries them across through the Word of the Shabad.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਾ ॥
anadin har rang har gun gaavai har rangee har rangaa |
Night and day, imbued with the Lord's Love, singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, the Lord's lover loves the Lord.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਰਬਾਣ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਉਤਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਦੁ ਚੰਗਾ ॥੨॥
jan naanak nirabaan pad paaeaa har utam har pad changaa |2|
Servant Nanak has obtained the state of Nirvaanaa, the state of ultimate goodness, the state of the Lord. ||2||
ਕੜੀਆਲੁ ਮੁਖੇ ਗੁਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
karreeaal mukhe gur giaan drirraaeaa raam |
For a bridle in my mouth, the Guru has implanted spiritual wisdom within me.
ਤਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਚਾਬਕੁ ਲਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
tan prem har chaabak laaeaa raam |
He has applied the whip of the Lord's Love to my body.
ਤਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਾਇ ਚਾਬਕੁ ਮਨੁ ਜਿਣੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੀਤਿਆ ॥
tan prem har har laae chaabak man jinai guramukh jeetiaa |
Applying the whip of the Lord's Love to his body, the Gurmukh conquers his mind, and wins the battle of life.
ਅਘੜੋ ਘੜਾਵੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਅਪਿਉ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਤਿਆ ॥
agharro gharraavai sabad paavai apiau har ras peetiaa |
He trains his untrained mind with the Word of the Shabad, and drinks in the rejuvenating essence of the Lord's Nectar.
ਸੁਣਿ ਸ੍ਰਵਣ ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਿ ਵਖਾਣੀ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਤੁਰੀ ਚੜਾਇਆ ॥
sun sravan baanee gur vakhaanee har rang turee charraaeaa |
Listen with your ears to the Word, uttered by the Guru, and attune your body-horse to the Lord's Love.
ਮਹਾ ਮਾਰਗੁ ਪੰਥੁ ਬਿਖੜਾ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਾਰਿ ਲੰਘਾਇਆ ॥੩॥
mahaa maarag panth bikharraa jan naanak paar langhaaeaa |3|
Servant Nanak has crossed over the long and treacherous path. ||3||
ਘੋੜੀ ਤੇਜਣਿ ਦੇਹ ਰਾਮਿ ਉਪਾਈਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
ghorree tejan deh raam upaaeea raam |
The transitory body-horse was created by the Lord.
ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਪੈ ਸਾ ਧਨੁ ਧੰਨੁ ਤੁਖਾਈਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
jit har prabh jaapai saa dhan dhan tukhaaeea raam |
Blessed, blessed is that body-horse which meditates on the Lord God.
ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਜਾਪੈ ਸਾ ਧੰਨੁ ਸਾਬਾਸੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਜੁੜੰਦਾ ॥
jit har prabh jaapai saa dhan saabaasai dhur paaeaa kirat jurrandaa |
Blessed and acclaimed is that body-horse which meditates on the Lord God; it is obtained by the merits of past actions.
ਚੜਿ ਦੇਹੜਿ ਘੋੜੀ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਲਘਾਏ ਮਿਲੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦਾ ॥
charr deharr ghorree bikham laghaae mil guramukh paramaanandaa |
Riding the body-horse, one crosses over the terrifying world ocean; the Gurmukh meets the Lord, the embodiment of supreme bliss.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕਾਜੁ ਰਚਾਇਆ ਪੂਰੈ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਜੰਞ ਆਈ ॥
har har kaaj rachaaeaa poorai mil sant janaa jany aaee |
The Lord, Har, Har, has perfectly arranged this wedding; the Saints have come together as a marriage party.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਮੰਗਲੁ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਵਾਧਾਈ ॥੪॥੧॥੫॥
jan naanak har var paaeaa mangal mil sant janaa vaadhaaee |4|1|5|
Servant Nanak has obtained the Lord as his Spouse; joining together, the Saints sing the songs of joy and congratulations. ||4||1||5||

The body is the Lord's horse; the Lord imbues it with the fresh and new color.
ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹਰਿ ਮੰਗੀਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
gur giaan guroo har mangeea raam |
From the Guru, I ask for the Lord's spiritual wisdom.
ਗਿਆਨ ਮੰਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਚੰਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਗਤਿ ਮਿਤਿ ਜਾਣੀਆ ॥
giaan mangee har kathaa changee har naam gat mit jaaneea |
I ask for the Lord's spiritual wisdom, and the Lord's sublime sermon; through the Name of the Lord, I have come to know His value and His state.
ਸਭੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਫਲਿਉ ਕੀਆ ਕਰਤੈ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਿ ਵਖਾਣੀਆ ॥
sabh janam safaliau keea karatai har raam naam vakhaaneea |
The Creator has made my life totally fruitful; I chant the Name of the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਨ ਮੰਗੀਆ ॥
har raam naam salaeh har prabh har bhagat har jan mangeea |
The Lord's humble servant begs for the Lord's Name, for the Lord's Praises, and for devotional worship of the Lord God.
ਜਨੁ ਕਹੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸੁਣਹੁ ਸੰਤਹੁ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਚੰਗੀਆ ॥੧॥
jan kahai naanak sunahu santahu har bhagat govind changeea |1|
Says servant Nanak, listen, O Saints: devotional worship of the Lord, the Lord of the Universe, is sublime and good. ||1||
ਦੇਹ ਕੰਚਨ ਜੀਨੁ ਸੁਵਿਨਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
deh kanchan jeen suvinaa raam |
The golden body is saddled with the saddle of gold.
ਜੜਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਰਤੰਨਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
jarr har har naam ratanaa raam |
It is adorned with the jewel of the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਜੜਿ ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਸੁਖ ਘਣੇ ॥
jarr naam ratan govind paaeaa har mile har gun sukh ghane |
Adorned with the jewel of the Naam, one obtains the Lord of the Universe; he meets the Lord, sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and obtains all sorts of comforts.
ਗੁਰਸਬਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗ ਹਰਿ ਬਣੇ ॥
gurasabad paaeaa har naam dhiaaeaa vaddabhaagee har rang har bane |
He obtains the Word of the Guru's Shabad, and he meditates on the Name of the Lord; by great good fortune, he assumes the color of the Lord's Love.
ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਹਰਿ ਨਵਤਨ ਹਰਿ ਨਵ ਰੰਗੀਆ ॥
har mile suaamee antarajaamee har navatan har nav rangeea |
He meets his Lord and Master, the Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts; His body is ever-new, and His color is ever-fresh.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਾਣੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਮੰਗੀਆ ॥੨॥
naanak vakhaanai naam jaanai har naam har prabh mangeea |2|
Nanak chants and realizes the Naam; he begs for the Name of the Lord, the Lord God. ||2||
ਕੜੀਆਲੁ ਮੁਖੇ ਗੁਰਿ ਅੰਕਸੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
karreeaal mukhe gur ankas paaeaa raam |
The Guru has placed the reins in the mouth of the body-horse.
ਮਨੁ ਮੈਗਲੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਵਸਿ ਆਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
man maigal gur sabad vas aaeaa raam |
The mind-elephant is overpowered by the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਮਨੁ ਵਸਗਤਿ ਆਇਆ ਪਰਮ ਪਦੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਕੰਤਿ ਪਿਆਰੀ ॥
man vasagat aaeaa param pad paaeaa saa dhan kant piaaree |
The bride obtains the supreme status, as her mind is brought under control; she is the beloved of her Husband Lord.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਲਗਾ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਸੋਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਰੀ ॥
antar prem lagaa har setee ghar sohai har prabh naaree |
Deep within her inner self, she is in love with her Lord; in His home, she is beautiful - she is the bride of her Lord God.
ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਸਹਜੇ ਮਾਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
har rang raatee sahaje maatee har prabh har har paaeaa |
Imbued with the Lord's Love, she is intuitively absorbed in bliss; she obtains the Lord God, Har, Har.
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਸੁ ਕਹਤੁ ਹੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥੩॥
naanak jan har daas kehat hai vaddabhaagee har har dhiaaeaa |3|
Servant Nanak, the Lord's slave, says that only the very fortunate meditate on the Lord, Har, Har. ||3||
ਦੇਹ ਘੋੜੀ ਜੀ ਜਿਤੁ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
deh ghorree jee jit har paaeaa raam |
The body is the horse, upon which one rides to the Lord.
ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਜੀ ਮੰਗਲੁ ਗਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
mil satigur jee mangal gaaeaa raam |
Meeting with the True Guru, one sings the songs of joy.
ਹਰਿ ਗਾਇ ਮੰਗਲੁ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮਾ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਵ ਸੇਵਕ ਸੇਵਕੀ ॥
har gaae mangal raam naamaa har sev sevak sevakee |
Sing the songs of joy to the Lord, serve the Name of the Lord, and become the servant of His servants.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜਾਇ ਪਾਵੈ ਰੰਗ ਮਹਲੀ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ਮਾਣੈ ਰੰਗ ਕੀ ॥
prabh jaae paavai rang mahalee har rang maanai rang kee |
You shall go and enter the Mansion of the Beloved Lord's Presence, and lovingly enjoy His Love.
ਗੁਣ ਰਾਮ ਗਾਏ ਮਨਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਮਨਿ ਧਿਆਇਆ ॥
gun raam gaae man subhaae har guramatee man dhiaaeaa |
I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, so pleasing to my mind; following the Guru's Teachings, I meditate on the Lord within my mind.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਧਾਰੀ ਦੇਹ ਘੋੜੀ ਚੜਿ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੨॥੬॥
jan naanak har kirapaa dhaaree deh ghorree charr har paaeaa |4|2|6|
The Lord has showered His Mercy upon servant Nanak; mounting the body-horse, he has found the Lord. ||4||2||6||
