ਭੁਜਾ ਪਕਰ ਕੇ ਸਾਰਥੀ ਰਥਿ ਤਬ ਡਾਰਿਯੋ ਧੀਰ ॥
bhujaa pakar ke saarathee rath tab ddaariyo dheer |
ਸ︀ਯੰਦਨ ਹਾਕਤ ਆਪੁ ਹੀ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਲਰਤ ਬਲਬੀਰ ॥੧੮੬੫॥

Catching hold of the arm of the charioteer and controlling the chariot, Krishna himself drove it while fighting.1865.

ਸਾਰਥੀ ਸ︀ਯੰਦਨ ਪੈ ਨ ਲਖਿਯੋ ਬਲਿਦੇਵ ਕਹਿਓ ਰਿਸਿ ਤਾਹਿ ਸੁਨੈ ਕੈ ॥
saarathee sayandan pai na lakhiyo balidev kahio ris taeh sunai kai |
ਜਿਉ ਦਲ ਤੋਰ ਜਿਤਿਯੋ ਸਬ ਹੀ ਤੈਸੋ ਤੋ ਜਿਤ ਹੈ ਜਸ ਡੰਕ ਬਜੈ ਕੈ ॥
jiau dal tor jitiyo sab hee taiso to jit hai jas ddank bajai kai |
When Balram did not see the charioteer on the chariot of Krishna, he said in anger, “O king! the way in which I have conquered your army, similarly after conquering you, I shall cause the drum of victory to be beaten
ਮੂਢ ਭਿਰੇ ਪਤਿ ਚਉਦਹ ਲੋਕ ਕੇ ਸੰਗ ਸੁ ਆਪ ਕਉ ਭੂਪ ਕਹੈ ਕੈ ॥
moodt bhire pat chaudah lok ke sang su aap kau bhoop kahai kai |
ਕੀਟ ਪਤੰਗ ਸੁ ਬਾਜਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਉਡਿਯੋ ਕਛੁ ਚਾਹਤ ਪੰਖ ਲਗੈ ਕੈ ॥੧੮੬੬॥
keett patang su baajan sang uddiyo kachh chaahat pankh lagai kai |1866|
“O fool! calling yourself a king, you are fighting with the Lord of all the fourteen worlds and appear exactly like the tiny worms and insects, getting wings are trying to compete the falcon flying in the sky.1866.
ਛਾਡਤ ਹੈ ਅਜਹੁੰ ਤੁਹਿ ਕਉ ਪਤਿ ਚਉਦਹ ਲੋਕਨ ਕੇ ਸੰਗ ਨ ਲਰੁ ॥
chhaaddat hai ajahun tuhi kau pat chaudah lokan ke sang na lar |
“I am leaving you today, do not fight with the Lord of all the fourteen worlds
ਗ︀ਯਾਨ ਕੀ ਬਾਤ ਧਰੋ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਸੁ ਅਗ︀ਯਾਨ ਕੀ ਚਿਤ ਤੇ ਬਾਤ ਬਿਦਾ ਕਰੁ ॥
gayaan kee baat dharo man mai su agayaan kee chit te baat bidaa kar |
Accept the wise saying and forsake your ignorance
ਰਛਕ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਕੋ ਬ੍ਰਿਜਨਾਥ ਕਹੈ ਕਬਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਇਹੈ ਜੀਅ ਮੈ ਧਰੁ ॥
rachhak hai sabh ko brijanaath kahai kab sayaam ihai jeea mai dhar |
“Believe it that Krishna is the Protector of all
ਤ︀ਯਾਗ ਕੈ ਆਹਵ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਬੈ ਸੁ ਅਬੈ ਘਨਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਕੇ ਪਾਇਨ ਪੈ ਪਰੁ ॥੧੮੬੭॥
tayaag kai aahav sasatr sabai su abai ghan sayaam ke paaein pai par |1867|
Therefore you should abandon your weapons and fall at his feet instantly.”1867.

ਜਬੈ ਹਲਾਯੁਧ ਐਸੇ ਕਹਿਯੋ ॥

ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਡੀਠ ਰਾਜਾ ਤਨ ਚਹਿਯੋ ॥
krodh ddeetth raajaa tan chahiyo |
ਕਹਿਯੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਸਬ ਕੋ ਸੰਘਰ ਹੋਂ ॥
kahiyo nripat sab ko sanghar hon |
ਛਤ੍ਰੀ ਹੋਇ ਗ੍ਵਾਰ ਤੇ ਟਰ ਹੋਂ ॥੧੮੬੮॥
chhatree hoe gvaar te ttar hon |1868|
When Balram said these words, the king got infuriated, he said, “I shall kill all and being a Kshatriya, I shall not fear the milkmen.”1868.

SWAYYA
ਭਾਖਬੋ ਇਉ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੋ ਸੁਨ ਕੈ ਜਦੁਬੀਰ ਸਬੈ ਅਤਿ ਕੋਪ ਭਰੇ ਹੈ ॥
bhaakhabo iau nrip ko sun kai jadubeer sabai at kop bhare hai |
ਧਾਇ ਪਰੇ ਤਜਿ ਸੰਕ ਨਿਸੰਕ ਚਿਤੈ ਅਰਿ ਕਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਮੈ ਨ ਡਰੇ ਹੈ ॥
dhaae pare taj sank nisank chitai ar kau chit mai na ddare hai |
Hearing these words of the king, Krishna was filled with rage and he unhesitatingly fell upon him
ਭੂਪ ਅਯੋਧਨ ਮੈ ਧਨੁ ਲੈ ਤਿਹ ਸੀਸ ਕਟੇ ਗਿਰ ਭੂਮਿ ਪਰੇ ਹੈ ॥
bhoop ayodhan mai dhan lai tih sees katte gir bhoom pare hai |
ਮਾਨਹੁ ਪਉਨ ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡ ਬਹੈ ਛੁਟਿ ਬੇਲਨ ਤੇ ਗਿਰਿ ਫੂਲ ਝਰੇ ਹੈ ॥੧੮੬੯॥
maanahu paun prachandd bahai chhutt belan te gir fool jhare hai |1869|
The king taking his bow in his hand, chopped the soldiers and caused them to fall down on the earth in such a way as if with the blowing of the violent wind, the fruit of the Bel tree had fallen down.1869.
ਸੈਨ ਸੰਘਾਰਤ ਭੂਪ ਫਿਰੈ ਭਟ ਆਨਿ ਕਉ ਆਖ ਤਰੈ ਨਹੀ ਆਨੇ ॥
sain sanghaarat bhoop firai bhatt aan kau aakh tarai nahee aane |
The king, destroying the army, was not considering any was significant
ਬਾਜ ਘਨੇ ਗਜ ਰਾਜਨ ਕੇ ਸਿਰ ਪਾਇਨ ਲਉ ਸੰਗਿ ਸ੍ਰਉਨ ਕੇ ਸਾਨੇ ॥
baaj ghane gaj raajan ke sir paaein lau sang sraun ke saane |
The horses of the king are saturated with blood from head to feet
ਅਉਰ ਰਥੀਨ ਕਰੇ ਬਿਰਥੀ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤਿ ਹਨੇ ਜੇਊ ਬਾਧਤ ਬਾਨੇ ॥
aaur ratheen kare birathee bahu bhaat hane jeaoo baadhat baane |
He has deprived many chariot-riders of their chariots
ਸੂਰਨ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਅੰਗ ਗਿਰੇ ਮਾਨੋ ਬੀਜ ਬੁਯੋ ਛਿਤ ਮਾਹਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਾਨੇ ॥੧੮੭੦॥
sooran ke pratiang gire maano beej buyo chhit maeh krisaane |1870|
The limbs of the warriors are lying scattered on the earth like the seed scattered by the farmer.1870.
ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਬਿਰੁਧ ਨਿਹਾਰ ਭਯੋ ਮੁਸਲੀਧਰ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਸੋ ਤੇਜ ਤਏ ਹੈ ॥
eih bhaat birudh nihaar bhayo musaleedhar sayaam so tej te hai |
ਭਾਖਿ ਦੋਊ ਨਿਜ ਸੂਤਨ ਕੋ ਰਿਪੁ ਸਾਮੁਹੇ ਜੁਧ ਕੇ ਕਾਜ ਗਏ ਹੈ ॥
bhaakh doaoo nij sootan ko rip saamuhe judh ke kaaj ge hai |
Seeing one another in this way, Krishna and Balram both became extremely filled with the fire of anger and reached before the enemy for fighting, asking their charioteers to proceed
ਆਯੁਧ ਲੈ ਸੁ ਹਠੀ ਕਵਚੀ ਰਿਸ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਵਕ ਬੇਖ ਭਏ ਹੈ ॥
aayudh lai su hatthee kavachee ris kai sang paavak bekh bhe hai |
Holding their weapons and dressed in their armours, and also in great fury these heroes looked like the fire
ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਇਮ ਧਾਵਤ ਭੇ ਮਾਨਹੁ ਕੇਹਰਿ ਦੁਇ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਹੇਰਿ ਧਏ ਹੈ ॥੧੮੭੧॥
sayaam bhanai im dhaavat bhe maanahu kehar due mrig her dhe hai |1871|
And seeing both these heroes, it appeared that two lions were causing the deer to flee in the forest.1871.
ਧਨੁ ਸਾਇਕ ਲੈ ਰਿਸਿ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਕੇ ਤਨ ਘਾਇ ਕਰੇ ਬ੍ਰਿਜਰਾਜ ਤਬੈ ॥
dhan saaeik lai ris bhoopat ke tan ghaae kare brijaraaj tabai |
At the same time, Krishna took his bow and arrows in his hands, struck a blow to the king
ਪੁਨਿ ਚਾਰੋ ਈ ਬਾਨਨ ਸੋ ਹਯ ਚਾਰੋ ਈ ਰਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਹਨਿ ਦੀਨੇ ਸਬੈ ॥
pun chaaro ee baanan so hay chaaro ee raam bhanai han deene sabai |
Then with four arrows, he killed the four horses of the king
ਤਿਲ ਕੋਟਿਕ ਸ︀ਯੰਦਨ ਕਾਟਿ ਕੀਯੋ ਧਨੁ ਕਾਟਿ ਦੀਯੋ ਕਰਿ ਕੋਪ ਜਬੈ ॥
til kottik sayandan kaatt keeyo dhan kaatt deeyo kar kop jabai |
In great rage, he chopped the bow of the king and also shattered his chariot
ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਪਿਆਦੋ ਗਦਾ ਗਹਿ ਸਉਹੇ ਗਯੋ ਅਤਿ ਜੁਧੁ ਭਯੋ ਕਹਿਹੌ ਸੁ ਅਬੈ ॥੧੮੭੨॥
nrip piaado gadaa geh sauhe gayo at judh bhayo kahihau su abai |1872|
Thereafter the king is advancing further with his mace in such a way, which I now describe.1872.
ਪਾਇਨ ਧਾਇ ਕੈ ਭੂਪ ਬਲੀ ਸੁ ਗਦਾ ਕਹੁ ਘਾਇ ਹਲੀ ਪ੍ਰਤ ਝਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
paaein dhaae kai bhoop balee su gadaa kahu ghaae halee prat jhaariyo |
ਕੋਪ ਹੁਤੋ ਸੁ ਜਿਤੋ ਤਿਹ ਮੈ ਸਬ ਸੂਰਨ ਕੋ ਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਤਛ ਦਿਖਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
kop huto su jito tih mai sab sooran ko su pratachh dikhaariyo |
The king, walking on foot, struck a blow on Balram with his mace and his whole fury became apparent to the warriors
ਕੂਦਿ ਹਲੀ ਭੁਇੰ ਠਾਢੋ ਭਯੋ ਜਸੁ ਤਾ ਛਬਿ ਕੋ ਕਬਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਉਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
kood halee bhuein tthaadto bhayo jas taa chhab ko kab sayaam uchaariyo |
ਚਾਰੋ ਈ ਅਸ੍ਵਨ ਸੂਤ ਸਮੇਤ ਸੁ ਕੈ ਸਬ ਹੀ ਰਥ ਚੂਰਨ ਡਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੧੮੭੩॥
chaaro ee asvan soot samet su kai sab hee rath chooran ddaariyo |1873|
Balram jumped and came down to stand on the earth and the king pulversied his chariot alongwith all four horses.1873.
ਇਤ ਭੂਪ ਗਦਾ ਗਹਿ ਆਵਤ ਭਯੋ ਉਤ ਲੈ ਕੇ ਗਦਾ ਮੁਸਲੀਧਰ ਧਾਯੋ ॥
eit bhoop gadaa geh aavat bhayo ut lai ke gadaa musaleedhar dhaayo |
On this side, the king advanced with his mace and on that side Balram also advanced with his mace
ਆਇ ਅਯੋਧਨ ਬੀਚ ਦੁਹੂੰ ਕਬਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਰਨ ਦੁੰਦ ਮਚਾਯੋ ॥
aae ayodhan beech duhoon kab sayaam kahai ran dund machaayo |
Both of them waged a terrible war in the battlefield,
ਜੁਧ ਕੀਯੋ ਬਹੁਤੇ ਚਿਰ ਲਉ ਨਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਗਿਰਿਓ ਉਤ ਕਉ ਨ ਗਿਰਾਯੋ ॥
judh keeyo bahute chir lau neh aap girio ut kau na giraayo |
And inspite of the continuance of the war for a long time, none of them could defeat the other
ਐਸੇ ਰਿਝਾਵਤ ਭਯੋ ਸੁਰ ਲੋਗਨ ਧੀਰਨ ਬੀਰਨ ਕੋ ਰਿਝਵਾਯੋ ॥੧੮੭੪॥
aise rijhaavat bhayo sur logan dheeran beeran ko rijhavaayo |1874|
In this way, seeing their fight, the wise warriors became pleased in their mind.1874.
ਹਾਰ ਕੈ ਬੈਠ ਰਹੈ ਦੋਊ ਬੀਰ ਸੰਭਾਰਿ ਉਠੈ ਪੁਨਿ ਜੁਧੁ ਮਚਾਵੈ ॥
haar kai baitth rahai doaoo beer sanbhaar utthai pun judh machaavai |
Both the warriors used to sit, when tired and then rose again for fighting
ਰੰਚ ਨ ਸੰਕ ਕਰੈ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਰਿਸ ਕੈ ਦੋਊ ਮਾਰ ਹੀ ਮਾਰ ਉਘਾਵੈ ॥
ranch na sank karai chit mai ris kai doaoo maar hee maar ughaavai |
Both of them were fighting fearlessly and angrily with the shouts of “kill, kill”
ਜੈਸੇ ਗਦਾਹਵ ਕੀ ਬਿਧਿ ਹੈ ਦੋਊ ਤੈਸੇ ਲਰੈ ਅਰੁ ਘਾਵ ਚਲਾਵੈ ॥
jaise gadaahav kee bidh hai doaoo taise larai ar ghaav chalaavai |
ਨੈਕੁ ਟਰੈ ਨ ਅਰੈ ਹਠ ਬਾਧਿ ਗਦਾ ਕੋ ਗਦਾ ਸੰਗਿ ਵਾਰ ਬਚਾਵੈ ॥੧੮੭੫॥
naik ttarai na arai hatth baadh gadaa ko gadaa sang vaar bachaavai |1875|
Both were fighting according to the manner of mace-warfare and without slightly wavering from their places, they were saving themselves from the blows of the mace with their own mace.1875.
ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਅਤਿ ਆਹਵ ਮੈ ਮੁਸਲੀ ਅਰੁ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਕੋਪ ਭਰੇ ਹੈ ॥
sayaam bhanai at aahav mai musalee ar bhoopat kop bhare hai |
According to the poet, both Balram and Jarashand are full of rage in the war-arena
ਆਪਸ ਬੀਚ ਹਕਾਰ ਦੋਊ ਭਟ ਚਿਤ ਬਿਖੈ ਨਹੀ ਨੈਕੁ ਡਰੇ ਹੈ ॥
aapas beech hakaar doaoo bhatt chit bikhai nahee naik ddare hai |
Both are challenging one another and are not afraid of the other even slightly
ਭਾਰੀ ਗਦਾ ਗਹਿ ਹਾਥਨ ਮੈ ਰਨ ਭੂਮਹਿ ਤੇ ਨਹਿ ਪੈਗੁ ਟਰੇ ਹੈ ॥
bhaaree gadaa geh haathan mai ran bhoomeh te neh paig ttare hai |
Catching hold of huge maces, both are not taking one step backward in the battlefield
ਮਾਨਹੁ ਮਧਿ ਮਹਾ ਬਨ ਕੇ ਪਲ ਕੇ ਹਿਤ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਬਰ ਸਿੰਘ ਅਰੇ ਹੈ ॥੧੮੭੬॥
maanahu madh mahaa ban ke pal ke hit hvai bar singh are hai |1876|
They appear like lion ready for hunting.1876.
ਕਾਟਿ ਗਦਾ ਬਲਦੇਵ ਦਈ ਤਿਹ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਕੀ ਅਰੁ ਬਾਨਨ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
kaatt gadaa baladev dee tih bhoopat kee ar baanan maariyo |
Balram cut down the mace of the king and shot arrows at him
ਪਉਰਖ ਯਾ ਹੀ ਭਿਰਿਯੋ ਹਮ ਸੋ ਰਿਸ ਕੈ ਅਰਿ ਕਉ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਪਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
paurakh yaa hee bhiriyo ham so ris kai ar kau ih bhaat pachaariyo |
He said to him, “Did you fight with me on the strength of this thought of bravery?”
ਇਉ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਪੁਨਿ ਬਾਨਨ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਰਾਸਨ ਲੈ ਤਿਹ ਗ੍ਰੀਵਹਿ ਡਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
eiau kar kai pun baanan maar saraasan lai tih greeveh ddaariyo |
Saying this and discharging his arrows, Balram put his bow around the neck of the king
ਦੇਵ ਕਰੈ ਉਪਮਾ ਸੁ ਕਹੈ ਜਦੁਬੀਰ ਜਿਤਿਯੋ ਸੁ ਬਡੋ ਅਰਿ ਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੧੮੭੭॥
dev karai upamaa su kahai jadubeer jitiyo su baddo ar haariyo |1877|
Balram, the hero of Yadavas won in this war and that formidable enemy was defeated.1877.
ਕੰਪਤ ਹੋ ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਖਗੇਸ ਮਹੇਸ ਮੁਨੀ ਜਿਹ ਤੇ ਭੈ ਭੀਤਿਯੋ ॥
kanpat ho jis te khages mahes munee jih te bhai bheetiyo |
He, from whom, the king of birds Garuda and the god Shiva tremble
ਸੇਸ ਜਲੇਸ ਦਿਨੇਸ ਨਿਸੇਸ ਸੁਰੇਸ ਹੁਤੇ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਨ ਨਿਚੀਤਿਯੋ ॥
ses jales dines nises sures hute chit mai na nicheetiyo |
He, from whom the sages, Sheshnaga, Varuna, Surya, Chandra, Indra etc. all of them are afraid in their mind
ਤਾ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੇ ਸਿਰ ਪੈ ਕਬਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਇਹ ਕਾਲ ਇਸੋ ਅਬ ਬੀਤਿਯੋ ॥
taa nrip ke sir pai kab sayaam kahai ih kaal iso ab beetiyo |
On the head of that king now hovered Kal (Death)
ਧੰਨਹਿ ਧੰਨਿ ਕਰੈ ਸਬ ਸੂਰ ਭਲੇ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਬਡੋ ਅਰਿ ਜੀਤਿਯੋ ॥੧੮੭੮॥
dhaneh dhan karai sab soor bhale bhagavaan baddo ar jeetiyo |1878|
All the warriors hailing Krishna said this, “By the grace of Krishna the great enemies have been conquered.”1878.
ਬਲਭਦ੍ਰ ਗਦਾ ਗਹਿ ਕੈ ਇਤ ਤੇ ਰਿਸ ਸਾਥ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਅਰਿ ਕਉ ਹਰਿ ਹੌਂ ॥
balabhadr gadaa geh kai it te ris saath kahiyo ar kau har hauan |
Balram, holding the mace in his hand, in great fury, said, “I shall kill the enemy
ਇਹ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਬਚਾਵਤ ਕੋ ਹਮ ਸੋ ਜਮ ਜਉ ਭਿਰਿ ਹੈ ਨ ਤਊ ਡਰਿ ਹੌਂ ॥
eih praan bachaavat ko ham so jam jau bhir hai na taoo ddar hauan |
If even Yama comes to protect his life, then I shall also fight with him
ਘਨ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਸਬੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਜਾਦਵ ਲੈ ਤਜਿ ਯਾਹ ਕਹੈ ਨ ਭਯਾ ਟਰਿ ਹੌਂ ॥
ghan sayaam sabai sang jaadav lai taj yaah kahai na bhayaa ttar hauan |
ਕਬਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਮੁਸਲੀ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਅਬੈ ਇਹ ਕੋ ਬਧ ਹੀ ਕਰਿ ਹੌਂ ॥੧੮੭੯॥
kab sayaam kahai musalee ih bhaat abai ih ko badh hee kar hauan |1879|
“Even if Krishna asks me taking all the Yadavas alongwith him, then also I shall not let him be alive,” Balram said thus, “I shall kill him just now.”1879.
ਸੁਨਿ ਭੂਪ ਹਲਾਯੁਧ ਕੀ ਬਤੀਯਾ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਡਰੁ ਮਾਨਿਯੋ ॥
sun bhoop halaayudh kee bateeyaa apune man mai at hee ddar maaniyo |
Hearing the words of Balram, Jarasandh became extremely fearful
ਮਾਨੁਖ ਰੂਪ ਲਖਿਯੋ ਨ ਬਲੀ ਨਿਸਚੈ ਬਲ ਕਉ ਜਮ ਰੂਪ ਪਛਾਨਿਯੋ ॥
maanukh roop lakhiyo na balee nisachai bal kau jam roop pachhaaniyo |
And he saw Balram, not as a man, but only as Yama
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਜਦੁਬੀਰ ਕੀ ਓਰਿ ਚਿਤੈ ਤਜਿ ਆਯੁਧ ਪਾਇਨ ਸੋ ਲਪਟਾਨਿਯੋ ॥
sree jadubeer kee or chitai taj aayudh paaein so lapattaaniyo |
ਮੇਰੀ ਸਹਾਇ ਕਰੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਜੂ ਕਬਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਿ ਯੌ ਘਿਘਿਯਾਨਿਯੋ ॥੧੮੮੦॥
meree sahaae karo prabh joo kab sayaam kahai keh yau ghighiyaaniyo |1880|
Now the king, looking towards Krishna, abandoning his weapons clung to his feet and said while crying, “O Lord! protect me.”1880.
ਕਰੁਨਾਨਿਧ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਸਾ ਤਿਹ ਕੀ ਕਰੁਨਾਰਸ ਕਉ ਚਿਤ ਬੀਚ ਬਢਾਯੋ ॥
karunaanidh dekh dasaa tih kee karunaaras kau chit beech badtaayo |
ਕੋਪਹਿ ਛਾਡਿ ਦਯੋ ਹਰਿ ਜੂ ਦੁਹੂੰ ਨੈਨਨ ਭੀਤਰ ਨੀਰ ਬਹਾਯੋ ॥
kopeh chhaadd dayo har joo duhoon nainan bheetar neer bahaayo |
Krishna, the treasure of compassion, seeing him in such a plight, was wonder-struck and forsaking his anger, caused to flow tears from both his eyes
ਬੀਰ ਹਲਾਯੁਧ ਠਾਢੋ ਹੁਤੋ ਤਿਹ ਕੋ ਕਹਿ ਕੈ ਇਹ ਬੈਨ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥
beer halaayudh tthaadto huto tih ko keh kai ih bain sunaayo |
ਛਾਡਿ ਦੈ ਜੋ ਹਮ ਜੀਤਨ ਆਯੋ ਹੋ ਸੋ ਹਮ ਜੀਤ ਲਯੋ ਬਿਲਖਾਯੋ ॥੧੮੮੧॥
chhaadd dai jo ham jeetan aayo ho so ham jeet layo bilakhaayo |1881|
Seeing his brother (a hero) standing there, he said this, “Leave him, to whom we had come to conquer, we have conquered him.”1881.
ਇਹ ਛੋਡਿ ਹਲੀ ਨਹੀ ਛੋਡਤ ਹੋ ਕਿਹ ਕਾਜ ਕਹਿਓ ਤੁਹਿ ਬਾਨਨ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
eih chhodd halee nahee chhoddat ho kih kaaj kahio tuhi baanan maariyo |
Balram said, “I have not conquered him by discharging arrows at him and then leave him
ਜੀਤ ਲਯੋ ਤੋ ਕਹਾ ਭਯੋ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਬਡੋ ਅਰਿ ਹੈ ਇਹ ਪਉਰਖ ਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
jeet layo to kahaa bhayo sayaam baddo ar hai ih paurakh haariyo |
What, if I have conquered him, he is a very great and powerful enemy,
ਆਛੋ ਰਥੀ ਹੈ ਭਯੋ ਬਿਰਥੀ ਅਰੁ ਪਾਇ ਗਹੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੇ ਉਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
aachho rathee hai bhayo birathee ar paae gahai prabh tere uchaariyo |
Who is also a great charioteer and at this time, having been deprived of his chariot, O Lord! he has fallen at your feet and saying these things
ਤੇਈਸ ਛੋਹਨੀ ਕੋ ਪਤਿ ਹੈ ਤੋ ਕਹਾ ਇਹ ਕੋ ਸਬ ਸੈਨ ਸੰਘਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੧੮੮੨॥
teees chhohanee ko pat hai to kahaa ih ko sab sain sanghaariyo |1882|
He is the master of twenty-three extremely large military units and if he had to leave him, then why we have killed his very big army?"1882.

Aasaa:
ਮੇਰੀ ਬਹੁਰੀਆ ਕੋ ਧਨੀਆ ਨਾਉ ॥
meree bahureea ko dhaneea naau |
My daughter-in-law was first called Dhannia, the woman of wealth,
ਲੇ ਰਾਖਿਓ ਰਾਮ ਜਨੀਆ ਨਾਉ ॥੧॥
le raakhio raam janeea naau |1|
but now she is called Raam-jannia, the servant of the Lord. ||1||
ਇਨੑ ਮੁੰਡੀਅਨ ਮੇਰਾ ਘਰੁ ਧੁੰਧਰਾਵਾ ॥
eina munddeean meraa ghar dhundharaavaa |
These shaven-headed saints have ruined my house.
ਬਿਟਵਹਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਮਊਆ ਲਾਵਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bittaveh raam rmaooaa laavaa |1| rahaau |
They have caused my son to start chanting the Lord's Name. ||1||Pause||
ਕਹਤੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਮੇਰੀ ਮਾਈ ॥
kehat kabeer sunahu meree maaee |
Says Kabeer, listen, O mother:
ਇਨੑ ਮੁੰਡੀਅਨ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਾਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥੨॥੩॥੩੩॥
eina munddeean meree jaat gavaaee |2|3|33|
these shaven-headed saints have done away with my low social status. ||2||3||33||

ਰਹੁ ਰਹੁ ਰੀ ਬਹੁਰੀਆ ਘੂੰਘਟੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਕਾਢੈ ॥
rahu rahu ree bahureea ghoonghatt jin kaadtai |
Stay, stay, O daughter-in-law - do not cover your face with a veil.
ਅੰਤ ਕੀ ਬਾਰ ਲਹੈਗੀ ਨ ਆਢੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ant kee baar lahaigee na aadtai |1| rahaau |
In the end, this shall not bring you even half a shell. ||1||Pause||
ਘੂੰਘਟੁ ਕਾਢਿ ਗਈ ਤੇਰੀ ਆਗੈ ॥
ghoonghatt kaadt gee teree aagai |
The one before you used to veil her face;
ਉਨ ਕੀ ਗੈਲਿ ਤੋਹਿ ਜਿਨਿ ਲਾਗੈ ॥੧॥
aun kee gail tohi jin laagai |1|
do not follow in her footsteps. ||1||
ਘੂੰਘਟ ਕਾਢੇ ਕੀ ਇਹੈ ਬਡਾਈ ॥
ghoonghatt kaadte kee ihai baddaaee |
The only merit in veiling your face is
ਦਿਨ ਦਸ ਪਾਂਚ ਬਹੂ ਭਲੇ ਆਈ ॥੨॥
din das paanch bahoo bhale aaee |2|
that for a few days, people will say, "What a noble bride has come". ||2||
ਘੂੰਘਟੁ ਤੇਰੋ ਤਉ ਪਰਿ ਸਾਚੈ ॥
ghoonghatt tero tau par saachai |
Your veil shall be true only if
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਇ ਕੂਦਹਿ ਅਰੁ ਨਾਚੈ ॥੩॥
har gun gaae koodeh ar naachai |3|
you skip, dance and sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||3||
ਕਹਤ ਕਬੀਰ ਬਹੂ ਤਬ ਜੀਤੈ ॥
kehat kabeer bahoo tab jeetai |
Says Kabeer, the soul-bride shall win,
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਨ ਗਾਵਤ ਜਨਮੁ ਬਿਤੀਤੈ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੪॥
har gun gaavat janam biteetai |4|1|34|
only if she passes her life singing the Lord's Praises. ||4||1||34||

ਕਰਵਤੁ ਭਲਾ ਨ ਕਰਵਟ ਤੇਰੀ ॥
karavat bhalaa na karavatt teree |
I would rather be cut apart by a saw, than have You turn Your back on me.
ਲਾਗੁ ਗਲੇ ਸੁਨੁ ਬਿਨਤੀ ਮੇਰੀ ॥੧॥
laag gale sun binatee meree |1|
Hug me close, and listen to my prayer. ||1||
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਮੁਖੁ ਫੇਰਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥
hau vaaree mukh fer piaare |
I am a sacrifice to You - please, turn Your face to me, O Beloved Lord.
ਕਰਵਟੁ ਦੇ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਕਾਹੇ ਕਉ ਮਾਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
karavatt de mo kau kaahe kau maare |1| rahaau |
Why have You turned Your back to me? Why have You killed me? ||1||Pause||
ਜਉ ਤਨੁ ਚੀਰਹਿ ਅੰਗੁ ਨ ਮੋਰਉ ॥
jau tan cheereh ang na morau |
Even if You cut my body apart, I shall not pull my limbs away from You.
ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਰੈ ਤਉ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਨ ਤੋਰਉ ॥੨॥
pindd parai tau preet na torau |2|
Even if my body falls, I shall not break my bonds of love with You. ||2||
ਹਮ ਤੁਮ ਬੀਚੁ ਭਇਓ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ ॥
ham tum beech bheo nahee koee |
Between You and I, there is no other.
ਤੁਮਹਿ ਸੁ ਕੰਤ ਨਾਰਿ ਹਮ ਸੋਈ ॥੩॥
tumeh su kant naar ham soee |3|
You are the Husband Lord, and I am the soul-bride. ||3||
ਕਹਤੁ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਰੇ ਲੋਈ ॥
kehat kabeer sunahu re loee |
Says Kabeer, listen, O people:
ਅਬ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਪਰਤੀਤਿ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥੪॥੨॥੩੫॥
ab tumaree parateet na hoee |4|2|35|
now, I place no reliance in you. ||4||2||35||

ਕੋਰੀ ਕੋ ਕਾਹੂ ਮਰਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਾਂ ॥
koree ko kaahoo maram na jaanaan |
No one knows the secret of God, the Cosmic Weaver.
ਸਭੁ ਜਗੁ ਆਨਿ ਤਨਾਇਓ ਤਾਨਾਂ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sabh jag aan tanaaeo taanaan |1| rahaau |
He has stretched out the fabric of the whole world. ||1||Pause||
ਜਬ ਤੁਮ ਸੁਨਿ ਲੇ ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨਾਂ ॥
jab tum sun le bed puraanaan |
When you listen to the Vedas and the Puraanas,
ਤਬ ਹਮ ਇਤਨਕੁ ਪਸਰਿਓ ਤਾਨਾਂ ॥੧॥
tab ham itanak pasario taanaan |1|
you shall know that the whole world is only a small piece of His woven fabric. ||1||
ਧਰਨਿ ਅਕਾਸ ਕੀ ਕਰਗਹ ਬਨਾਈ ॥
dharan akaas kee karagah banaaee |
He has made the earth and sky His loom.
ਚੰਦੁ ਸੂਰਜੁ ਦੁਇ ਸਾਥ ਚਲਾਈ ॥੨॥
chand sooraj due saath chalaaee |2|
Upon it, He moves the two bobbins of the sun and the moon. ||2||
ਪਾਈ ਜੋਰਿ ਬਾਤ ਇਕ ਕੀਨੀ ਤਹ ਤਾਂਤੀ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਾਂ ॥
paaee jor baat ik keenee teh taantee man maanaan |
Placing my feet together, I have accomplished one thing - my mind is pleased with that Weaver.
ਜੋਲਾਹੇ ਘਰੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਚੀਨੑਾਂ ਘਟ ਹੀ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਛਾਨਾਂ ॥੩॥
jolaahe ghar apanaa cheenaan ghatt hee raam pachhaanaan |3|
I have come to understand my own home, and recognize the Lord within my heart. ||3||
ਕਹਤੁ ਕਬੀਰੁ ਕਾਰਗਹ ਤੋਰੀ ॥
kehat kabeer kaaragah toree |
Says Kabeer, when my body workshop breaks,
ਸੂਤੈ ਸੂਤ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਕੋਰੀ ॥੪॥੩॥੩੬॥
sootai soot milaae koree |4|3|36|
the Weaver shall blend my thread with His thread. ||4||3||36||

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਜੇ ਤੀਰਥ ਨਾਵੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਨ ਜਾਨਾਂ ॥
antar mail je teerath naavai tis baikuntth na jaanaan |
With filth within the heart, even if one bathes at sacred places of pilgrimage, still, he shall not go to heaven.
ਲੋਕ ਪਤੀਣੇ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਰਾਮੁ ਅਯਾਨਾ ॥੧॥
lok pateene kachhoo na hovai naahee raam ayaanaa |1|
Nothing is gained by trying to please others - the Lord cannot be fooled. ||1||
ਪੂਜਹੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਏਕੁ ਹੀ ਦੇਵਾ ॥
poojahu raam ek hee devaa |
Worship the One Divine Lord.
ਸਾਚਾ ਨਾਵਣੁ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸੇਵਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saachaa naavan gur kee sevaa |1| rahaau |
The true cleansing bath is service to the Guru. ||1||Pause||
ਜਲ ਕੈ ਮਜਨਿ ਜੇ ਗਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਨਿਤ ਨਿਤ ਮੇਂਡੁਕ ਨਾਵਹਿ ॥
jal kai majan je gat hovai nit nit mendduk naaveh |
If salvation can be obtained by bathing in water, then what about the frog, which is always bathing in water?
ਜੈਸੇ ਮੇਂਡੁਕ ਤੈਸੇ ਓਇ ਨਰ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਜੋਨੀ ਆਵਹਿ ॥੨॥
jaise mendduk taise oe nar fir fir jonee aaveh |2|
As is the frog, so is that mortal; he is reincarnated, over and over again. ||2||
ਮਨਹੁ ਕਠੋਰੁ ਮਰੈ ਬਾਨਾਰਸਿ ਨਰਕੁ ਨ ਬਾਂਚਿਆ ਜਾਈ ॥
manahu katthor marai baanaaras narak na baanchiaa jaaee |
If the hard-hearted sinner dies in Benaares, he cannot escape hell.
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਸੰਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਹਾੜੰਬੈ ਤ ਸਗਲੀ ਸੈਨ ਤਰਾਈ ॥੩॥
har kaa sant marai haarranbai ta sagalee sain taraaee |3|
And even if the Lord's Saint dies in the cursed land of Haramba, still, he saves all his family. ||3||
ਦਿਨਸੁ ਨ ਰੈਨਿ ਬੇਦੁ ਨਹੀ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਤਹਾ ਬਸੈ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
dinas na rain bed nahee saasatr tahaa basai nirankaaraa |
Where there is neither day nor night, and neither Vedas nor Shaastras, there, the Formless Lord abides.
ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਨਰ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ਬਾਵਰਿਆ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੪॥੩੭॥
keh kabeer nar tiseh dhiaavahu baavariaa sansaaraa |4|4|37|
Says Kabeer, meditate on Him, O mad-men of the world. ||4||4||37||
