ਹੇ ਮੁਸਲੀਧਰ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਰ ਸੁਨ ਅਬ ਕਥਾ ਰਸਾਲ ॥੧੭੩੫॥

he musaleedhar budh bar sun ab kathaa rasaal |1735|

The lotus-eyed Krishna said again, “O sagacious Balram! now you listen to the interesting episode,1735

ਸੁਨਿ ਦੈ ਸ੍ਰਉਨ ਬਾਤ ਕਹੋ ਤੋ ਸੋ ॥

sun dai sraun baat kaho to so |

ਕਵਨ ਜੁਧੁ ਕਰਿ ਜੀਤੈ ਮੋ ਸੋ ॥

kavan judh kar jeetai mo so |

“Listen attentively to my words and understand who has been victorious over me in the war?

ਖੜਗ ਸਿੰਘ ਮੋ ਅੰਤਰ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

kharrag singh mo antar naahee |

ਮੁਹਿ ਸਰੂਪ ਵਰਤਤ ਜਗ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੧੭੩੬॥

muhi saroop varatat jag maahee |1736|

There is no difference between me and Kharag Singh and my form only pervades the whole wold.1736.

ਸਾਚ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਹੈ ਹੇ ਬਲਿਦੇਵਾ ॥

saach kahiyo hai he balidevaa |

ਪਾਯੋ ਨਹਿਨ ਕਿਸੂ ਇਹ ਭੇਵਾ ॥

paayo nahin kisoo ih bhevaa |

“O Balram! I am telling you the truth, none knows about this mystery

ਸੂਰਨ ਮੈ ਕੋਊ ਇਹ ਸਮ ਨਾਹੀ ॥

sooran mai koaoo ih sam naahee |

ਮੇਰੋ ਨਾਮ ਬਸੈ ਰਿਦ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੧੭੩੭॥

mero naam basai rid maahee |1737|

There is no warrior amongst the warriors like him, in whose heart abides my Name with such profundity.1737.

ਉਦਰ ਮਾਝ ਬਸਿ ਮਾਸ ਦਸ ਤਜਿ ਭੋਜਨ ਜਲ ਪਾਨ ॥

audar maajh bas maas das taj bhojan jal paan |

“Residing in the womb of the mother for ten months, when he passed his life by relinquishing,

ਪਵਨ ਅਹਾਰੀ ਹੁਇ ਰਹਿਓ ਬਰੁ ਦੀਨੋ ਭਗਵਾਨ ॥੧੭੩੮॥

pavan ahaaree hue rahio bar deeno bhagavaan |1738|

Eating and drinking and subsisting only on air, then the Lord bestowed on him a boon.1738.

ਰਿਪੁ ਜੀਤਨ ਕੋ ਬਰੁ ਲੀਯੋ ਖੜਗ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਲਵਾਨ ॥

rip jeetan ko bar leeyo kharrag singh balavaan |

“The powerful Kharag Singh asked for the boon of conquering the enemy and

ਬਹੁਰਿ ਤਪਸ︀ਯਾ ਬਨਿ ਕਰੀ ਦ੍ਵਾਦਸ ਬਰਖ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨ ॥੧੭੩੯॥

bahur tapasayaa ban karee dvaadas barakh pramaan |1739|

Then for twelve years, he performed most stern aausterities.”1739.

jaage su bhatt duhoon dis or |

This episode ended and the day dawned, the warriors of both the sides awoke

ਜਰਾਸੰਧਿ ਦਲੁ ਸਜਿ ਰਨਿ ਆਯੋ ॥

jaraasandh dal saj ran aayo |

ਜਾਦਵ ਦਲੁ ਬਲਿ ਲੈ ਸਮੁਹਾਯੋ ॥੧੭੪੦॥

jaadav dal bal lai samuhaayo |1740|

Bedecking his army, Jarasandh came into the battlefield and from this side, the Yadava army, gathering all its warriors set itself against the enemy.1740.

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਬਲਦੇਵ ਸਬੈ ਦਲੁ ਲੈ ਇਤ ਤੇ ਉਮਡਿਓ ਉਤ ਤੇ ਉਇ ਆਏ ॥

sree baladev sabai dal lai it te umaddio ut te ue aae |

Balram from this side and the enemy from the other side alonghwith their armies rushed forward

ਜੁਧੁ ਕੀਓ ਹਲ ਲੈ ਨਿਜ ਪਾਨਿ ਹਕਾਰਿ ਹਕਾਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰ ਲਗਾਏ ॥

judh keeo hal lai nij paan hakaar hakaar prahaar lagaae |

Balram took his plough in his hand and challenging the enemy struck his blows

ਏਕ ਪਰੇ ਭਟ ਜੂਝਿ ਧਰਾ ਪਰ ਏਕ ਲਰੈ ਮਿਲ ਕੈ ਇਕ ਧਾਏ ॥

ek pare bhatt joojh dharaa par ek larai mil kai ik dhaae |

Someone died and fell upon the earth, someone fought and someone fled away

ਮੂਸਲ ਲੈ ਬਹੁਰੇ ਕਰ ਮੈ ਅਰਿ ਮਾਰਿ ਘਨੇ ਜਮ ਧਾਮਿ ਪਠਾਏ ॥੧੭੪੧॥

moosal lai bahure kar mai ar maar ghane jam dhaam patthaae |1741|

Then Balram took his mace in his hand despatched many enemies to the abode of Yama.1741.

ਰੋਸ ਭਯੋ ਘਨ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਲਯੋ ਧਨੁ ਬਾਨੁ ਸੰਭਾਰਿ ਤਹੀ ਉਠਿ ਧਾਯੋ ॥

ros bhayo ghan sayaam layo dhan baan sanbhaar tahee utth dhaayo |

ਆਨਿ ਪਰਿਓ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਤਿਨ ਪੈ ਰਿਪੁ ਕਉ ਹਤਿ ਕੈ ਨਦਿ ਸ੍ਰੋਨ ਬਹਾਯੋ ॥

aan pario tab hee tin pai rip kau hat kai nad sron bahaayo |

Krishna took his bow and arrows in his hands and marched towards the same side and falling upon the enemy, he caused a stream of blood to flow

ਬਾਜ ਕਰੀ ਰਥਪਤਿ ਬਿਪਤਿ ਪਰੀ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਨਹਿ ਕੋ ਠਹਿਰਾਯੋ ॥

baaj karee rathapat bipat paree ran mai neh ko tthahiraayo |

A great affliction fell upon the horses, elephants and the chariot-owners

ਭਾਜਤ ਜਾਤ ਸਬੈ ਰਿਸਿ ਖਾਤ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਬਸਾਤ ਕਹੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੧੭੪੨॥

bhaajat jaat sabai ris khaat kachhoo na basaat kahai dukh paayo |1742|

None could stay in the war arena, all are running away, they are in anger and anguish and also helpless.1742.

ਆਗੇ ਕੀ ਸੈਨ ਭਜੀ ਜਬ ਹੀ ਤਬ ਪਉਰਖ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਬ੍ਰਿਜਰਾਜ ਸੰਭਾਰਿਓ ॥

aage kee sain bhajee jab hee tab paurakh sree brijaraaj sanbhaario |

ਠਾਢੋ ਜਹਾ ਦਲ ਕੋ ਪਤਿ ਹੈ ਤਹਾ ਜਾਇ ਪਰ︀ਯੋ ਚਿਤ ਬੀਚ ਬਿਚਾਰਿਓ ॥

tthaadto jahaa dal ko pat hai tahaa jaae parayo chit beech bichaario |

When the confronging army fled, Krishna in extreme anger sustained his strength and thinking in his mind, he reached there, where the general of the army was standing

ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਸੰਭਾਰਿ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ਸਬੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਠਾਢੋ ਜਹਾ ਤਿਹ ਓਰਿ ਸਿਧਾਰਿਓ ॥

sasatr sanbhaar muraar sabai nrip tthaadto jahaa tih or sidhaario |

ਬਾਨ ਕਮਾਨ ਗਹੀ ਘਨਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਜਰਾਸੰਧਿ ਕੋ ਅਭਿਮਾਨ ਉਤਾਰਿਓ ॥੧੭੪੩॥

baan kamaan gahee ghan sayaam jaraasandh ko abhimaan utaario |1743|

Holding his weapons, Krishna reached that place, where the king Jarasandh was standing, he held his bow and arrows and pulversied the ego of Jarasandh.1743.

ਸ੍ਰੀ ਬਲਬੀਰ ਸਰਾਸਨੁ ਤੇ ਜਬ ਤੀਰ ਛੁਟੇ ਤਬ ਕੋ ਠਹਰਾਵੈ ॥

sree balabeer saraasan te jab teer chhutte tab ko tthaharaavai |

ਜਾਇ ਲਗੇ ਜਿਹ ਕੇ ਉਰ ਮੈ ਸਰ ਸੋ ਛਿਨ ਮੈ ਜਮ ਧਾਮਿ ਸਿਧਾਵੈ ॥

jaae lage jih ke ur mai sar so chhin mai jam dhaam sidhaavai |

When the arrows were discharged from the bow of Krishna, who could then stand against him? Those who were hit by these arrows, they reached the abode of Yama in an instant

ਐਸੇ ਨ ਕੋ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਿਓ ਜਗ ਮੈ ਭਟ ਜੋ ਸਮੁਹਾਇ ਕੈ ਜੁਧੁ ਮਚਾਵੈ ॥

aise na ko pragattio jag mai bhatt jo samuhaae kai judh machaavai |

No such warrior has been born, who could fight in front of Krishna

ਭੂਪਤਿ ਕਉ ਨਿਜ ਬੀਰ ਕਹੈਂ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਰਤ ਸੈਨ ਚਲਿਓ ਰਨਿ ਆਵੈ ॥੧੭੪੪॥

bhoopat kau nij beer kahain har maarat sain chalio ran aavai |1744|

The warriors of the king said to him, “Krishna is coming alongwith his army in order to kill us.”1744.

ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਕੀ ਓਰ ਤੇ ਬਾਨ ਛੁਟੇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੇ ਦਲ ਕੇ ਬਹੁ ਬੀਰਨ ਘਾਏ ॥

sayaam kee or te baan chhutte nrip ke dal ke bahu beeran ghaae |

Many warriors on the side of the king were killed, when the arrows were discharged from the side of Krishna

ਜੇਤਿਕ ਆਇ ਭਿਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਸੋ ਛਿਨ ਬੀਚ ਤੇਊ ਜਮ ਧਾਮਿ ਪਠਾਏ ॥

jetik aae bhire har so chhin beech teaoo jam dhaam patthaae |

Those who fought with Krishna, reached the abode of Yama

ਕਉਤੁਕ ਦੇਖ ਕੈ ਯੌ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਅਤਿ ਆਤੁਰ ਹੁਇ ਤਿਨ ਬੈਨ ਸੁਨਾਏ ॥

kautuk dekh kai yau ran mai at aatur hue tin bain sunaae |

ਆਵਨ ਦੇਹੁ ਅਬੈ ਹਮ ਲਉ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਐਸੇ ਕਹਿਓ ਸਿਗਰੇ ਸਮਝਾਏ ॥੧੭੪੫॥

aavan dehu abai ham lau nrip aise kahio sigare samajhaae |1745|

Seeing this spectacle, the king god agitated and told and instructed his warriors, “Let Krishna near me, then I shall see.”1745.

ਭੂਪ ਲਖਿਓ ਹਰਿ ਆਵਤ ਹੀ ਸੰਗ ਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਿਤਨਾ ਤਬ ਆਪੁ ਹੀ ਧਾਯੋ ॥

bhoop lakhio har aavat hee sang lai pritanaa tab aap hee dhaayo |

When the king saw Krishna coming, he marched forward alongwith his army

ਆਗੇ ਕੀਏ ਨਿਜ ਲੋਗ ਸਬੈ ਤਬ ਲੈ ਕਰ ਮੋ ਬਰ ਸੰਖ ਬਜਾਯੋ ॥

aage kee nij log sabai tab lai kar mo bar sankh bajaayo |

He caused his warriors to advance and taking up his conch in his hand, he blew it

ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਤਿਹ ਆਹਵ ਮੈ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਮਨ ਭੀਤਰ ਕੋ ਡਰ ਪਾਯੋ ॥

sayaam bhanai tih aahav mai at hee man bheetar ko ddar paayo |

The poet says that there is no fear in the mind of anyone in the war

ਤਾ ਧੁਨਿ ਕੋ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਬਰ ਬੀਰਨ ਕੇ ਚਿਤਿ ਮਾਨਹੁ ਚਾਉ ਬਢਾਯੋ ॥੧੭੪੬॥

taa dhun ko sun kai bar beeran ke chit maanahu chaau badtaayo |1746|

Hearing the sound of the conch, the minds of the warriors were excited.1746.

ਸਲੋਕੁ ਮਃ ੧ ॥

Salok, First Mehl:

ਦਇਆ ਕਪਾਹ ਸੰਤੋਖੁ ਸੂਤੁ ਜਤੁ ਗੰਢੀ ਸਤੁ ਵਟੁ ॥

deaa kapaah santokh soot jat gandtee sat vatt |

Make compassion the cotton, contentment the thread, modesty the knot and truth the twist.

ਏਹੁ ਜਨੇਊ ਜੀਅ ਕਾ ਹਈ ਤ ਪਾਡੇ ਘਤੁ ॥

ehu janeaoo jeea kaa hee ta paadde ghat |

This is the sacred thread of the soul; if you have it, then go ahead and put it on me.

ਨਾ ਏਹੁ ਤੁਟੈ ਨ ਮਲੁ ਲਗੈ ਨਾ ਏਹੁ ਜਲੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥

naa ehu tuttai na mal lagai naa ehu jalai na jaae |

It does not break, it cannot be soiled by filth, it cannot be burnt, or lost.

ਧੰਨੁ ਸੁ ਮਾਣਸ ਨਾਨਕਾ ਜੋ ਗਲਿ ਚਲੇ ਪਾਇ ॥

dhan su maanas naanakaa jo gal chale paae |

Blessed are those mortal beings, O Nanak, who wear such a thread around their necks.

ਚਉਕੜਿ ਮੁਲਿ ਅਣਾਇਆ ਬਹਿ ਚਉਕੈ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

chaukarr mul anaaeaa beh chaukai paaeaa |

You buy the thread for a few shells, and seated in your enclosure, you put it on.

ਸਿਖਾ ਕੰਨਿ ਚੜਾਈਆ ਗੁਰੁ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਥਿਆ ॥

sikhaa kan charraaeea gur braahaman thiaa |

Whispering instructions into others' ears, the Brahmin becomes a guru.

ਓਹੁ ਮੁਆ ਓਹੁ ਝੜਿ ਪਇਆ ਵੇਤਗਾ ਗਇਆ ॥੧॥

ohu muaa ohu jharr peaa vetagaa geaa |1|

But he dies, and the sacred thread falls away, and the soul departs without it. ||1||

First Mehl:

ਲਖ ਚੋਰੀਆ ਲਖ ਜਾਰੀਆ ਲਖ ਕੂੜੀਆ ਲਖ ਗਾਲਿ ॥

lakh choreea lakh jaareea lakh koorreea lakh gaal |

He commits thousands of robberies, thousands of acts of adultery, thousands of falsehoods and thousands of abuses.

ਲਖ ਠਗੀਆ ਪਹਿਨਾਮੀਆ ਰਾਤਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਜੀਅ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

lakh tthageea pahinaameea raat dinas jeea naal |

He practices thousands of deceptions and secret deeds, night and day, against his fellow beings.

ਤਗੁ ਕਪਾਹਹੁ ਕਤੀਐ ਬਾਮੑਣੁ ਵਟੇ ਆਇ ॥

tag kapaahahu kateeai baaman vatte aae |

The thread is spun from cotton, and the Brahmin comes and twists it.

ਕੁਹਿ ਬਕਰਾ ਰਿੰਨੑਿ ਖਾਇਆ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਆਖੈ ਪਾਇ ॥

kuhi bakaraa rina khaaeaa sabh ko aakhai paae |

The goat is killed, cooked and eaten, and everyone then says, "Put on the sacred thread."

ਹੋਇ ਪੁਰਾਣਾ ਸੁਟੀਐ ਭੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਹੋਰੁ ॥

hoe puraanaa sutteeai bhee fir paaeeai hor |

When it wears out, it is thrown away, and another one is put on.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਤੁਟਈ ਜੇ ਤਗਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਜੋਰੁ ॥੨॥

naanak tag na tuttee je tag hovai jor |2|

O Nanak, the thread would not break, if it had any real strength. ||2||

First Mehl:

ਨਾਇ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਪਤਿ ਊਪਜੈ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਸਚੁ ਸੂਤੁ ॥

naae maniai pat aoopajai saalaahee sach soot |

Believing in the Name, honor is obtained. The Lord's Praise is the true sacred thread.

ਦਰਗਹ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਪਾਈਐ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਤੂਟਸਿ ਪੂਤ ॥੩॥

daragah andar paaeeai tag na toottas poot |3|

Such a sacred thread is worn in the Court of the Lord; it shall never break. ||3||

First Mehl:

ਤਗੁ ਨ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਨਾਰੀ ॥

tag na indree tag na naaree |

There is no sacred thread for the sexual organ, and no thread for woman.

ਭਲਕੇ ਥੁਕ ਪਵੈ ਨਿਤ ਦਾੜੀ ॥

bhalake thuk pavai nit daarree |

The man's beard is spat upon daily.

ਤਗੁ ਨ ਪੈਰੀ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਹਥੀ ॥

tag na pairee tag na hathee |

There is no sacred thread for the feet, and no thread for the hands;

ਤਗੁ ਨ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਤਗੁ ਨ ਅਖੀ ॥

tag na jihavaa tag na akhee |

no thread for the tongue, and no thread for the eyes.

ਵੇਤਗਾ ਆਪੇ ਵਤੈ ॥

vetagaa aape vatai |

The Brahmin himself goes to the world hereafter without a sacred thread.

ਵਟਿ ਧਾਗੇ ਅਵਰਾ ਘਤੈ ॥

vatt dhaage avaraa ghatai |

Twisting the threads, he puts them on others.

ਲੈ ਭਾੜਿ ਕਰੇ ਵੀਆਹੁ ॥

lai bhaarr kare veeaahu |

He takes payment for performing marriages;

ਕਢਿ ਕਾਗਲੁ ਦਸੇ ਰਾਹੁ ॥

kadt kaagal dase raahu |

reading their horoscopes, he shows them the way.

ਸੁਣਿ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਲੋਕਾ ਏਹੁ ਵਿਡਾਣੁ ॥

sun vekhahu lokaa ehu viddaan |

Hear, and see, O people, this wondrous thing.

ਮਨਿ ਅੰਧਾ ਨਾਉ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ॥੪॥

man andhaa naau sujaan |4|

He is mentally blind, and yet his name is wisdom. ||4||

Pauree:

ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਹੋਇ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਸਾਈ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਇਸੀ ॥

saahib hoe deaal kirapaa kare taa saaee kaar karaaeisee |

One, upon whom the Merciful Lord bestows His Grace, performs His service.

ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮਨਾਇਸੀ ॥

so sevak sevaa kare jis no hukam manaaeisee |

That servant, whom the Lord causes to obey the Order of His Will, serves Him.

ਹੁਕਮਿ ਮੰਨਿਐ ਹੋਵੈ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਤਾ ਖਸਮੈ ਕਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਇਸੀ ॥

hukam maniai hovai paravaan taa khasamai kaa mehal paaeisee |

Obeying the Order of His Will, he becomes acceptable, and then, he obtains the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.

ਖਸਮੈ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਮਨਹੁ ਚਿੰਦਿਆ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਇਸੀ ॥

khasamai bhaavai so kare manahu chindiaa so fal paaeisee |

One who acts to please His Lord and Master, obtains the fruits of his mind's desires.

ਤਾ ਦਰਗਹ ਪੈਧਾ ਜਾਇਸੀ ॥੧੫॥

taa daragah paidhaa jaaeisee |15|

Then, he goes to the Court of the Lord, wearing robes of honor. ||15||

Salok, First Mehl:

ਗਊ ਬਿਰਾਹਮਣ ਕਉ ਕਰੁ ਲਾਵਹੁ ਗੋਬਰਿ ਤਰਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥

gaoo biraahaman kau kar laavahu gobar taran na jaaee |

They tax the cows and the Brahmins, but the cow-dung they apply to their kitchen will not save them.

ਧੋਤੀ ਟਿਕਾ ਤੈ ਜਪਮਾਲੀ ਧਾਨੁ ਮਲੇਛਾਂ ਖਾਈ ॥

dhotee ttikaa tai japamaalee dhaan malechhaan khaaee |

They wear their loin cloths, apply ritual frontal marks to their foreheads, and carry their rosaries, but they eat food with the Muslims.

ਅੰਤਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਪੜਹਿ ਕਤੇਬਾ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਤੁਰਕਾ ਭਾਈ ॥

antar poojaa parreh katebaa sanjam turakaa bhaaee |

O Siblings of Destiny, you perform devotional worship indoors, but read the Islamic sacred texts, and adopt the Muslim way of life.

ਛੋਡੀਲੇ ਪਾਖੰਡਾ ॥

chhoddeele paakhanddaa |

Renounce your hypocrisy!

ਨਾਮਿ ਲਇਐ ਜਾਹਿ ਤਰੰਦਾ ॥੧॥

naam leiai jaeh tarandaa |1|

Taking the Naam, the Name of the Lord, you shall swim across. ||1||

First Mehl:

ਮਾਣਸ ਖਾਣੇ ਕਰਹਿ ਨਿਵਾਜ ॥

maanas khaane kareh nivaaj |

The man-eaters say their prayers.

ਛੁਰੀ ਵਗਾਇਨਿ ਤਿਨ ਗਲਿ ਤਾਗ ॥

chhuree vagaaein tin gal taag |

Those who wield the knife wear the sacred thread around their necks.

ਤਿਨ ਘਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣ ਪੂਰਹਿ ਨਾਦ ॥

tin ghar brahaman pooreh naad |

In their homes, the Brahmins sound the conch.

ਉਨੑਾ ਭਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਓਈ ਸਾਦ ॥

aunaa bhi aaveh oee saad |

They too have the same taste.

ਕੂੜੀ ਰਾਸਿ ਕੂੜਾ ਵਾਪਾਰੁ ॥

koorree raas koorraa vaapaar |

False is their capital, and false is their trade.

ਕੂੜੁ ਬੋਲਿ ਕਰਹਿ ਆਹਾਰੁ ॥

koorr bol kareh aahaar |

Speaking falsehood, they take their food.

ਸਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਕਾ ਡੇਰਾ ਦੂਰਿ ॥

saram dharam kaa dderaa door |

The home of modesty and Dharma is far from them.

ਨਾਨਕ ਕੂੜੁ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰਿ ॥

naanak koorr rahiaa bharapoor |

O Nanak, they are totally permeated with falsehood.

ਮਥੈ ਟਿਕਾ ਤੇੜਿ ਧੋਤੀ ਕਖਾਈ ॥

mathai ttikaa terr dhotee kakhaaee |

The sacred marks are on their foreheads, and the saffron loin-cloths are around their waists;

ਹਥਿ ਛੁਰੀ ਜਗਤ ਕਾਸਾਈ ॥

hath chhuree jagat kaasaaee |

in their hands they hold the knives - they are the butchers of the world!

ਨੀਲ ਵਸਤ੍ਰ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥

neel vasatr pahir hoveh paravaan |

Wearing blue robes, they seek the approval of the Muslim rulers.

ਮਲੇਛ ਧਾਨੁ ਲੇ ਪੂਜਹਿ ਪੁਰਾਣੁ ॥

malechh dhaan le poojeh puraan |

Accepting bread from the Muslim rulers, they still worship the Puraanas.

ਅਭਾਖਿਆ ਕਾ ਕੁਠਾ ਬਕਰਾ ਖਾਣਾ ॥

abhaakhiaa kaa kutthaa bakaraa khaanaa |

They eat the meat of the goats, killed after the Muslim prayers are read over them,

ਚਉਕੇ ਉਪਰਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਜਾਣਾ ॥

chauke upar kisai na jaanaa |

but they do not allow anyone else to enter their kitchen areas.

ਦੇ ਕੈ ਚਉਕਾ ਕਢੀ ਕਾਰ ॥

de kai chaukaa kadtee kaar |

They draw lines around them, plastering the ground with cow-dung.

ਉਪਰਿ ਆਇ ਬੈਠੇ ਕੂੜਿਆਰ ॥

aupar aae baitthe koorriaar |

The false come and sit within them.

ਮਤੁ ਭਿਟੈ ਵੇ ਮਤੁ ਭਿਟੈ ॥

mat bhittai ve mat bhittai |

They cry out, "Do not touch our food,

ਇਹੁ ਅੰਨੁ ਅਸਾਡਾ ਫਿਟੈ ॥

eihu an asaaddaa fittai |

Or it will be polluted!"

ਤਨਿ ਫਿਟੈ ਫੇੜ ਕਰੇਨਿ ॥

tan fittai ferr karen |

But with their polluted bodies, they commit evil deeds.

ਮਨਿ ਜੂਠੈ ਚੁਲੀ ਭਰੇਨਿ ॥

man jootthai chulee bharen |

With filthy minds, they try to cleanse their mouths.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਚੁ ਧਿਆਈਐ ॥

kahu naanak sach dhiaaeeai |

Says Nanak, meditate on the True Lord.

ਸੁਚਿ ਹੋਵੈ ਤਾ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੨॥

such hovai taa sach paaeeai |2|

If you are pure, you will obtain the True Lord. ||2||
