ਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਉ ਨਿਤ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਸਚੀਪਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਸਨਕਾਦਿਕ ਹੂੰ ਜਪੁ ਕੀਨੋ ॥
jaa prabh kau nit braham sacheepat sree sanakaadik hoon jap keeno |
He, whose name is muttered ever by Brahma, Indra, Sanak etc.
ਸੂਰ ਸਸੀ ਸੁਰ ਨਾਰਦ ਸਾਰਦ ਤਾਹੀ ਕੇ ਧਿਆਨ ਬਿਖੈ ਮਨੁ ਦੀਨੋ ॥
soor sasee sur naarad saarad taahee ke dhiaan bikhai man deeno |
He, on whom Surya, Chandra, Narada, Sharda meditate
ਖੋਜਤ ਹੈ ਜਿਹ ਸਿਧ ਮਹਾ ਮੁਨਿ ਬਿਆਸ ਪਰਾਸੁਰ ਭੇਦ ਨ ਚੀਨੋ ॥
khojat hai jih sidh mahaa mun biaas paraasur bhed na cheeno |
He, whom the adepts search in their contemplation and whose mystery is not comprehended by the great sages like Vyas and Prashar,
ਸੋ ਖੜਗੇਸ ਅਯੋਧਨ ਮੈ ਕਰਿ ਮੋਹਿਤ ਕੇਸਨ ਤੇ ਗਹਿ ਲੀਨੋ ॥੧੫੩੧॥
so kharrages ayodhan mai kar mohit kesan te geh leeno |1531|
Kharag Singh caught him in the battlefield by his hair.1531.
ਮਾਰਿ ਬਕੀ ਬਕ ਅਉਰ ਅਘਾਸੁਰ ਧੇਨਕ ਕੋ ਪਲ ਮੈ ਬਧ ਕੀਨੋ ॥
maar bakee bak aaur aghaasur dhenak ko pal mai badh keeno |
He, who killed Putana, Bakasura, Aghasura and Dhenkasura in an instant
ਕੇਸੀ ਬਛਾਸੁਰ ਮੁਸਟ ਚੰਡੂਰ ਕੀਏ ਚਕਚੂਰ ਸੁਨਿਯੋ ਪੁਰ ਤੀਨੋ ॥
kesee bachhaasur musatt chanddoor kee chakachoor suniyo pur teeno |
He, who became famous in all the three worlds by killing Keshi, Mahishasur, Mushiti, Chandur etc.
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਤ੍ਰ ਅਨੇਕ ਹਨੇ ਤਿਹ ਕਉਨ ਗਨੇ ਕਬਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨੋ ॥
sree har satr anek hane tih kaun gane kab sayaam prabeeno |
That Krishna, who had knocked down many enemies with skill and killed Kansa by catching him from his hair
ਕੰਸ ਕਉ ਕੇਸਨ ਤੇ ਗਹਿ ਕੇਸਵ ਭੂਪ ਮਨੋ ਬਦਲੋ ਵਹੁ ਲੀਨੋ ॥੧੫੩੨॥
kans kau kesan te geh kesav bhoop mano badalo vahu leeno |1532|
The name Krishna has been caught by his hair by the king Kharag Singh, it seems that he has avenged the killing of Kansa by catching his hair.1532
ਚਿੰਤ ਕਰੀ ਚਿਤ ਮੈ ਤਿਹ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਜੋ ਇਹ ਕਉ ਅਬ ਹਉ ਬਧ ਕੈ ਹਉ ॥
chint karee chit mai tih bhoopat jo ih kau ab hau badh kai hau |
The king then thought that if he killed Krishna, all his army would run away
ਸੈਨ ਸਭੈ ਭਜ ਹੈ ਜਬ ਹੀ ਤਬ ਕਾ ਸੰਗ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ਜੁਧੁ ਮਚੈ ਹਉ ॥
sain sabhai bhaj hai jab hee tab kaa sang jaae kai judh machai hau |
With whom then he would fight?
ਹਉ ਕਿਹ ਪੈ ਕਰਿ ਹੋ ਬਹੁ ਘਾਇਨ ਕਾ ਕੇ ਹਉ ਘਾਇਨ ਸਨਮੁਖ ਖੈ ਹਉ ॥
hau kih pai kar ho bahu ghaaein kaa ke hau ghaaein sanamukh khai hau |
ਛਾਡਿ ਦਯੋ ਕਹਿਓ ਜਾਹੁ ਚਲੇ ਹਰਿ ਤੋ ਸਮ ਸੂਰ ਕਹੂੰ ਨਹੀ ਪੈ ਹਉ ॥੧੫੩੩॥
chhaadd dayo kahio jaahu chale har to sam soor kahoon nahee pai hau |1533|
To whom then he would inflict a wound or from whom he be wounded himself? Therefore, the king set Krishna free and said,” Go away, there is no other warrior like you.”1533.
ਪਉਰਖ ਜੈਸੋ ਬਡੋ ਕੀਯੋ ਭੂਪ ਨ ਆਗੈ ਕਿਸੀ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਐਸੋ ਕੀਯੋ ॥

The great bravery that the king exhibited, was incomparable
ਭਟ ਪੇਖਿ ਕੈ ਭਾਜਿ ਗਏ ਸਿਗਰੇ ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਧਨੁ ਬਾਨ ਨ ਪਾਨਿ ਲੀਓ ॥
bhatt pekh kai bhaaj ge sigare kinahoon dhan baan na paan leeo |
Seeing this spectacle all the warriors ran away, none of them caught him bow and arrows
ਹਥਿਯਾਰ ਉਤਾਰ ਚਲੇ ਬਿਸੰਭਾਰਿ ਰਥੀ ਰਥ ਟਾਰਿ ਡਰਾਤ ਹੀਓ ॥
hathiyaar utaar chale bisanbhaar rathee rath ttaar ddaraat heeo |
ਰਨ ਮੈ ਖੜਗੇਸ ਬਲੀ ਬਲੁ ਕੈ ਅਪੁਨੋ ਕਰ ਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਛਾਡਿ ਦੀਯੋ ॥੧੫੩੪॥
ran mai kharrages balee bal kai apuno kar kai har chhaadd deeyo |1534|
The great fighters, fearing in their mind, abandoned their weapons and fled away and in the battlefield the king set free Krishna with his own will.1534.

ਛਾਡਿ ਕੇਸ ਤੇ ਜਬ ਹਰਿ ਦਯੋ ॥

ਲਜਤ ਭਯੋ ਬਿਸਰਿ ਬਲੁ ਗਯੋ ॥
lajat bhayo bisar bal gayo |
When Krishna was set free, by loosening the grasp of his hair, he forgot his power and felt ashamed
ਤਬ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਪ੍ਰਤਛ ਹੁਇ ਆਯੋ ॥
tab brahamaa pratachh hue aayo |
ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਤਾਪ ਤਿਨਿ ਸਕਲ ਮਿਟਾਯੋ ॥੧੫੩੫॥
krisan taap tin sakal mittaayo |1535|
Then Brahma manifested himself and ended the mental anxiety of Krishna.1535.
ਕਹੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਸਿਉ ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਬੈਨਾ ॥
kahe krisan siau ih bidh bainaa |
ਲਾਜ ਕਰੋ ਨਹਿ ਪੰਕਜ ਨੈਨਾ ॥
laaj karo neh pankaj nainaa |
He (Brahma) said to Krishna, “O Lotus-eyed! do not feel ashamed
ਇਹ ਪਉਰਖ ਹਉ ਤੋਹਿ ਸੁਨਾਊ ॥
eih paurakh hau tohi sunaaoo |
ਤਿਹ ਤੇ ਤੋ ਕਹੁ ਅਬਹਿ ਰਿਝਾਊ ॥੧੫੩੬॥
tih te to kahu abeh rijhaaoo |1536|
I now please you by relating the story of the bravery (of the king).”1536.

ਜਬ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਭੂਪਤਿ ਜਨਮ ਲੀਓ ॥
jab hee ih bhoopat janam leeo |
ਤਜਿ ਧਾਮ ਤਬੈ ਬਨਿਬਾਸੁ ਕੀਓ ॥
taj dhaam tabai banibaas keeo |
“When this king was born, he left his home and went to the forest
ਤਪਸਾ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਜਗ ਮਾਤ ਰਿਝਾਯੋ ॥
tapasaa kar kai jag maat rijhaayo |
ਤਹ ਤੇ ਅਰਿ ਜੀਤਨ ਕੋ ਬਰੁ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੧੫੩੭॥
teh te ar jeetan ko bar paayo |1537|
With great austerities, he pleased the goddess Chandika from whom he obtained the boon of conquering the enemy.1537.

Aasaa, Fourth Mehl:
ਜਿਨ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਧੁਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਤਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥
jin masatak dhur har likhiaa tinaa satigur miliaa raam raaje |
Those who have the blessed pre-ordained destiny of the Lord written on their foreheads, meet the True Guru, the Lord King.
ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਕਟਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਘਟਿ ਬਲਿਆ ॥
agiaan andheraa kattiaa gur giaan ghatt baliaa |
The Guru removes the darkness of ignorance, and spiritual wisdom illuminates their hearts.
ਹਰਿ ਲਧਾ ਰਤਨੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੋ ਫਿਰਿ ਬਹੁੜਿ ਨ ਚਲਿਆ ॥
har ladhaa ratan padaaratho fir bahurr na chaliaa |
They find the wealth of the jewel of the Lord, and then, they do not wander any longer.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਆਰਾਧਿਆ ਆਰਾਧਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ॥੧॥
jan naanak naam aaraadhiaa aaraadh har miliaa |1|
Servant Nanak meditates on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, and in meditation, he meets the Lord. ||1||
ਜਿਨੀ ਐਸਾ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਿਓ ਸੇ ਕਾਹੇ ਜਗਿ ਆਏ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥
jinee aisaa har naam na chetio se kaahe jag aae raam raaje |
Those who have not kept the Lord's Name in their consciousness - why did they bother to come into the world, O Lord King?
ਇਹੁ ਮਾਣਸ ਜਨਮੁ ਦੁਲੰਭੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਸਭੁ ਜਾਏ ॥
eihu maanas janam dulanbh hai naam binaa birathaa sabh jaae |
It is so difficult to obtain this human incarnation, and without the Naam, it is all futile and useless.
ਹੁਣਿ ਵਤੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਬੀਜਿਓ ਅਗੈ ਭੁਖਾ ਕਿਆ ਖਾਏ ॥
hun vatai har naam na beejio agai bhukhaa kiaa khaae |
Now, in this most fortunate season, he does not plant the seed of the Lord's Name; what will the hungry soul eat, in the world hereafter?
ਮਨਮੁਖਾ ਨੋ ਫਿਰਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਏ ॥੨॥
manamukhaa no fir janam hai naanak har bhaae |2|
The self-willed manmukhs are born again and again. O Nanak, such is the Lord's Will. ||2||
ਤੂੰ ਹਰਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਸਭਿ ਤੁਧੁ ਉਪਾਏ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥
toon har teraa sabh ko sabh tudh upaae raam raaje |
You, O Lord, belong to all, and all belong to You. You created all, O Lord King.
ਕਿਛੁ ਹਾਥਿ ਕਿਸੈ ਦੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਸਭਿ ਚਲਹਿ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
kichh haath kisai dai kichh naahee sabh chaleh chalaae |
Nothing is in anyone's hands; all walk as You cause them to walk.
ਜਿਨੑ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਲਹਿ ਪਿਆਰੇ ਸੇ ਤੁਧੁ ਮਿਲਹਿ ਜੋ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਏ ॥
jina toon meleh piaare se tudh mileh jo har man bhaae |
They alone are united with You, O Beloved, whom You cause to be so united; they alone are pleasing to Your Mind.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਤਰਾਏ ॥੩॥
jan naanak satigur bhettiaa har naam taraae |3|
Servant Nanak has met the True Guru, and through the Lord's Name, he has been carried across. ||3||
ਕੋਈ ਗਾਵੈ ਰਾਗੀ ਨਾਦੀ ਬੇਦੀ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਨਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਭੀਜੈ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥
koee gaavai raagee naadee bedee bahu bhaat kar nahee har har bheejai raam raaje |
Some sing of the Lord, through musical Ragas and the sound current of the Naad, through the Vedas, and in so many ways. But the Lord, Har, Har, is not pleased by these, O Lord King.
ਜਿਨਾ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਕਪਟੁ ਵਿਕਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਤਿਨਾ ਰੋਇ ਕਿਆ ਕੀਜੈ ॥
jinaa antar kapatt vikaar hai tinaa roe kiaa keejai |
Those who are filled with fraud and corruption within - what good does it do for them to cry out?
ਹਰਿ ਕਰਤਾ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਾਣਦਾ ਸਿਰਿ ਰੋਗ ਹਥੁ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
har karataa sabh kichh jaanadaa sir rog hath deejai |
The Creator Lord knows everything, although they may try to hide their sins and the causes of their diseases.
ਜਿਨਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਿਰਦਾ ਸੁਧੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਲੀਜੈ ॥੪॥੧੧॥੧੮॥
jinaa naanak guramukh hiradaa sudh hai har bhagat har leejai |4|11|18|
O Nanak, those Gurmukhs whose hearts are pure, obtain the Lord, Har, Har, by devotional worship. ||4||11||18||

Aasaa, Fourth Mehl:
ਜਿਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਜਨ ਸੁਘੜ ਸਿਆਣੇ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥
jin antar har har preet hai te jan sugharr siaane raam raaje |
Those whose hearts are filled with the love of the Lord, Har, Har, are the wisest and most clever people, O Lord King.
ਜੇ ਬਾਹਰਹੁ ਭੁਲਿ ਚੁਕਿ ਬੋਲਦੇ ਭੀ ਖਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਭਾਣੇ ॥
je baaharahu bhul chuk bolade bhee khare har bhaane |
Even if they misspeak outwardly, they are still very pleasing to the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਸੰਤਾ ਨੋ ਹੋਰੁ ਥਾਉ ਨਾਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਮਾਣੁ ਨਿਮਾਣੇ ॥
har santaa no hor thaau naahee har maan nimaane |
The Lord's Saints have no other place. The Lord is the honor of the dishonored.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੀਬਾਣੁ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਤਾਣੁ ਸਤਾਣੇ ॥੧॥
jan naanak naam deebaan hai har taan sataane |1|
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is the Royal Court for servant Nanak; the Lord's power is his only power. ||1||
ਜਿਥੈ ਜਾਇ ਬਹੈ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਸੋ ਥਾਨੁ ਸੁਹਾਵਾ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥
jithai jaae bahai meraa satiguroo so thaan suhaavaa raam raaje |
Wherever my True Guru goes and sits, that place is beautiful, O Lord King.
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਂੀ ਸੋ ਥਾਨੁ ਭਾਲਿਆ ਲੈ ਧੂਰਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਲਾਵਾ ॥
gurasikhanee so thaan bhaaliaa lai dhoor mukh laavaa |
The Guru's Sikhs seek out that place; they take the dust and apply it to their faces.
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾ ਕੀ ਘਾਲ ਥਾਇ ਪਈ ਜਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਾ ॥
gurasikhaa kee ghaal thaae pee jin har naam dhiaavaa |
The works of the Guru's Sikhs, who meditate on the Lord's Name, are approved.
ਜਿਨੑ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਜਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਹਰਿ ਪੂਜ ਕਰਾਵਾ ॥੨॥
jina naanak satigur poojiaa tin har pooj karaavaa |2|
Those who worship the True Guru, O Nanak - the Lord causes them to be worshipped in turn. ||2||
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾ ਮਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਹਰਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥
gurasikhaa man har preet hai har naam har teree raam raaje |
The Guru's Sikh keeps the Love of the Lord, and the Name of the Lord, in his mind. He loves You, O Lord, O Lord King.
ਕਰਿ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਪੂਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਭੁਖ ਜਾਇ ਲਹਿ ਮੇਰੀ ॥
kar seveh pooraa satiguroo bhukh jaae leh meree |
He serves the Perfect True Guru, and his hunger and self-conceit are eliminated.
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾ ਕੀ ਭੁਖ ਸਭ ਗਈ ਤਿਨ ਪਿਛੈ ਹੋਰ ਖਾਇ ਘਨੇਰੀ ॥
gurasikhaa kee bhukh sabh gee tin pichhai hor khaae ghaneree |
The hunger of the Gursikh is totally eliminated; indeed, many others are satisfied through them.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਬੀਜਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਪੁੰਨ ਕੇਰੀ ॥੩॥
jan naanak har pun beejiaa fir tott na aavai har pun keree |3|
Servant Nanak has planted the Seed of the Lord's Goodness; this Goodness of the Lord shall never be exhausted. ||3||
ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾ ਮਨਿ ਵਾਧਾਈਆ ਜਿਨ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਡਿਠਾ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਜੇ ॥
gurasikhaa man vaadhaaeea jin meraa satiguroo dditthaa raam raaje |
The minds of the Gursikhs rejoice, because they have seen my True Guru, O Lord King.
ਕੋਈ ਕਰਿ ਗਲ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਸੋ ਲਗੈ ਗੁਰਸਿਖਾ ਮਨਿ ਮਿਠਾ ॥
koee kar gal sunaavai har naam kee so lagai gurasikhaa man mitthaa |
If someone recites to them the story of the Lord's Name, it seems so sweet to the mind of those Gursikhs.
ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਪੈਨਾਈਅਹਿ ਜਿਨੑਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਤੁਠਾ ॥
har daragah gurasikh painaaeeeh jinaa meraa satigur tutthaa |
The Gursikhs are robed in honor in the Court of the Lord; my True Guru is very pleased with them.
ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹੋਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਵੁਠਾ ॥੪॥੧੨॥੧੯॥
jan naanak har har hoeaa har har man vutthaa |4|12|19|
Servant Nanak has become the Lord, Har, Har; the Lord, Har, Har, abides within his mind. ||4||12||19||
