ਮ੍ਰਿਤਕ ਹੁਇ ਧਰਨੀ ਪਰਿਯੋ ਜੋਤਿ ਰਹੀ ਠਹਰਾਇ ॥
mritak hue dharanee pariyo jot rahee tthaharaae |
He died and fell on the ground and his consciousness ended
ਜਨੁ ਅਕਾਸ ਤੇ ਭਾਸਕਰਿ ਪਯੋ ਰਾਹੁ ਡਰ ਆਇ ॥੧੧੫੪॥
jan akaas te bhaasakar payo raahu ddar aae |1154|
He appeared like the sun coming down from the sky on the earth out of fear.1154.

SWAYYA
ਕੋਪ ਭਰੇ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਕਬਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਤਬੈ ਹਰਿ ਜੂ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਹੈ ॥
kop bhare ran mai kab sayaam tabai har joo ih bhaat kahiyo hai |
ਜੁਧ ਬਿਖੈ ਭਟ ਕਉਨ ਗਨੈ ਲਖਿ ਬੀਰ ਹਨੈ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਜੁ ਚਹਿਯੋ ਹੈ ॥
judh bikhai bhatt kaun ganai lakh beer hanai man mai ju chahiyo hai |
Then Krishna said this in rage, “Who is this heroic fighter who has killed all the warriors and thrown them on the ground according to his heart’s desire?
ਜਾਨਤ ਹਉ ਤਿਹ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਤੁਮੈ ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਕਰ ਮੈ ਧਨ ਹੂੰ ਗਹਿਯੋ ਹੈ ॥
jaanat hau tih traas tumai kinahoon kar mai dhan hoon gahiyo hai |
“I know that fearing him, you are not catching your bows and arrows in your hands
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਪਧਾਰਹੁ ਧਾਮਨ ਕੋ ਸੁ ਲਖਿਯੋ ਤੁਮ ਤੇ ਪੁਰਖਤੁ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਹੈ ॥੧੧੫੫॥
taa te padhaarahu dhaaman ko su lakhiyo tum te purakhat rahiyo hai |1155|
In my opinion you may all go to your homes, because your audacity seems to have ended.”1155.
ਐਸੇ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਜਦੁਬੀਰ ਤਿਨੈ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਰਿਸ ਕੈ ਧਨੁ ਬਾਨ ਸੰਭਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
aise kahiyo jadubeer tinai sabh hee ris kai dhan baan sanbhaariyo |
ਹ੍ਵੈ ਕੇ ਇਕਤ੍ਰ ਚਲੇ ਰਨ ਕੋ ਬਲਿ ਬਿਕ੍ਰਮ ਪਉਰਖ ਜੀਅ ਬਿਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
hvai ke ikatr chale ran ko bal bikram paurakh jeea bichaariyo |
When Krishna uttered these words, all of them took up their bows and arrows and thinking of their courage they gathered together and marched forward for war
ਮਾਰ ਹੀ ਮਾਰ ਪੁਕਾਰਿ ਪਰੇ ਜੋਊ ਆਇ ਅਰਿਯੋ ਅਰਿ ਸੋ ਤਿਹ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
maar hee maar pukaar pare joaoo aae ariyo ar so tih maariyo |
ਹੋਤ ਭਯੋ ਤਿਹ ਜੁਧ ਬਡੋ ਦੁਹੂੰ ਓਰਨ ਤੇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਠਾਢਿ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੧੧੫੬॥
hot bhayo tih judh baddo duhoon oran te nrip tthaadt nihaariyo |1156|
They killed everyone who confronted them while shouting “Kill, Kill”, the king Jarasandh saw this terrible war being fought from both sides.1156.
ਏਕ ਸੁਜਾਨ ਬਡੋ ਬਲਵਾਨ ਧਰੇ ਅਸਿ ਪਾਨਿ ਤੁਰੰਗਮ ਡਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
ek sujaan baddo balavaan dhare as paan turangam ddaariyo |
ਅਸ੍ਵ ਪਚਾਸ ਹਨੇ ਅਰਿਯੋ ਅਨਗੇਸ ਬਲੀ ਕਹੁ ਜਾ ਲਲਕਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
asv pachaas hane ariyo anages balee kahu jaa lalakaariyo |
One of the mighty warriors, holding his sword in his hand, caused his horse to run and killing fifty soldiers, he challenged Anag Singh from this side,
ਧਾਇ ਕੈ ਘਾਇ ਕਰਿਯੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਲੈ ਕਰ ਬਾਮ ਮੈ ਚਾਮ ਕੀ ਓਟਿ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
dhaae kai ghaae kariyo nrip lai kar baam mai chaam kee ott nivaariyo |
Sujan Singh rushed and struck a blow on the king which was obstructed by him on his shield with his left hand
ਦਾਹਨੈ ਪਾਨਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ ਕੋ ਤਾਨਿ ਸੁਜਾਨ ਕੋ ਕਾਟਿ ਕੈ ਸੀਸ ਉਤਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੧੧੫੭॥
daahanai paan kripaan ko taan sujaan ko kaatt kai sees utaariyo |1157|
With his right hand the king chopped the head of Sujan Singh with his sword.1157.

ਬੀਰ ਸੁਜਾਨ ਹਨ︀ਯੋ ਜਬੈ ਅਣਗ ਸਿੰਘ ਤਿਹ ਠਾਇ ॥

ਦੇਖਿਯੋ ਸੈਨਾ ਜਾਦਵੀ ਦਉਰ ਪਰੇ ਅਰਰਾਇ ॥੧੧੫੮॥
dekhiyo sainaa jaadavee daur pare araraae |1158|
When Anag Singh killed Sujan Singh, the Yadava army then highly infuriated, fell upon the forces of the enemy.1158.

SWAYYA
ਭਟ ਲਾਜ ਭਰੇ ਅਰਰਾਇ ਪਰੇ ਨ ਡਰੇ ਅਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਤੇਊ ਆਇ ਅਰੇ ॥
bhatt laaj bhare araraae pare na ddare ar siau teaoo aae are |
ਅਤਿ ਕੋਪ ਭਰੇ ਸਬ ਲੋਹ ਜਰੇ ਅਬ ਯਾਹਿ ਹਨੋ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਉਚਰੇ ॥
at kop bhare sab loh jare ab yaeh hano mukh te uchare |
The warriors filled with the sense of shame fell upon the army and shouted in rage, “Now we shall definitely kill Anag,”
ਅਸਿ ਭਾਲ ਗਦਾ ਅਰੁ ਲੋਹ ਹਥੀ ਬਰਛੀ ਕਰਿ ਲੈ ਲਲਕਾਰ ਪਰੇ ॥
as bhaal gadaa ar loh hathee barachhee kar lai lalakaar pare |
They challenged him taking their lances, swords, maces, spears etc, in their hands
ਕਬਿ ਰਾਮ ਭਨੈ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਤ ਗਨੇ ਕਿਤਨੇ ਬਰ ਬਾਨ ਕਮਾਨ ਧਰੇ ॥੧੧੫੯॥
kab raam bhanai nahee jaat gane kitane bar baan kamaan dhare |1159|
The poet Ram says that the strings of innumerable bows were pulled.1159.
ਅਨਗੇਸ ਬਲੀ ਧਨੁ ਬਾਨ ਗਹਿਯੋ ਅਤਿ ਰੋਸ ਭਰਿਯੋ ਦੋਊ ਨੈਨ ਤਚਾਏ ॥
anages balee dhan baan gahiyo at ros bhariyo doaoo nain tachaae |
On this side Anag Singh also in great fury took up his bow and arrows and his eyes became red
ਮਾਰ ਹੀ ਮਾਰ ਪੁਕਾਰਿ ਪਰਿਯੋ ਸਰ ਸਤ੍ਰਨ ਕੇ ਉਰ ਬੀਚ ਲਗਾਏ ॥
maar hee maar pukaar pariyo sar satran ke ur beech lagaae |
Shouting “Kill, Kill” he discharged his arrows on the hearts of his enemies,
ਏਕ ਮਰੇ ਇਕ ਘਾਇ ਭਰੇ ਇਕ ਦੇਖਿ ਡਰੇ ਰਨ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਪਰਾਏ ॥
ek mare ik ghaae bhare ik dekh ddare ran tiaag paraae |
With whose penetration someone was killed, someone was wounded and someone ran away from the battlefield
ਆਇ ਲਰੇ ਜੋਊ ਲਾਜ ਭਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਰਨ ਕੋਪ ਕੀ ਓਪ ਬਢਾਏ ॥੧੧੬੦॥
aae lare joaoo laaj bhare man mai ran kop kee op badtaae |1160|
Those who in their pride came to fight, the war became more dreadful on their arrival.1160.
ਸਾਤਕਿ ਅਉ ਮੁਸਲੀ ਰਥ ਪੈ ਬਸੁਦੇਵ ਤੇ ਆਦਿਕ ਧਾਇ ਸਬੈ ॥
saatak aau musalee rath pai basudev te aadik dhaae sabai |
ਬਰਮਾਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਊਧਵ ਅਉਰ ਅਕ੍ਰੂਰ ਚਲੇ ਰਨ ਕਉ ਭਰਿ ਲਾਜ ਤਬੈ ॥
baramaakrit aoodhav aaur akraoor chale ran kau bhar laaj tabai |
Balram, Vasudev, Satyam etc., marched forward and Udhava and Akrur etc. also for war-arena
ਤਿਹ ਬੀਚ ਘਿਰਿਓ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਰਾਜਤ ਯੌ ਲਖਿ ਰੀਝ ਰਹੈ ਭਟ ਤਾਹਿ ਛਬੈ ॥
tih beech ghirio nrip raajat yau lakh reejh rahai bhatt taeh chhabai |
ਮਨ ਯੌ ਉਪਜੀ ਉਪਮਾ ਰਿਤੁ ਪਾਵਸ ਅਭ੍ਰਨ ਮੈ ਦਿਨ ਰਾਜ ਫਬੈ ॥੧੧੬੧॥
man yau upajee upamaa rit paavas abhran mai din raaj fabai |1161|
Besieged by all of them, the king Anag Singh appears like sun surrounded by clouds in the rainy season.1161.
ਹਲੁ ਪਾਨਿ ਸੰਭਾਰਿ ਲਯੋ ਮੁਸਲੀ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਅਰਿ ਕੋ ਹਯ ਚਾਰੋ ਹੀ ਘਾਏ ॥
hal paan sanbhaar layo musalee ran mai ar ko hay chaaro hee ghaae |
Balram took his plough in his hand and killed all the four horses of the enemy
ਬਾਨ ਕਮਾਨ ਗਹੀ ਬਸੁਦੇਵ ਭਲੇ ਰਥ ਕੇ ਚਕ ਕਾਟਿ ਗਿਰਾਏ ॥
baan kamaan gahee basudev bhale rath ke chak kaatt giraae |
Vasudev with his bow and arrows cut down all the four wheels of the chariot
ਸਾਤਕਿ ਸੂਤ ਕੋ ਸੀਸ ਕਟਿਯੋ ਰਿਸਿ ਊਧਵ ਬਾਨ ਅਨੇਕ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
saatak soot ko sees kattiyo ris aoodhav baan anek chalaae |
Satyak chopped the head of his charioteer and Udhava also in his fury discharged many arrows
ਫਾਧਿ ਪਰਿਯੋ ਰਥ ਤੇ ਤਤਕਾਲ ਲਏ ਅਸਿ ਢਾਲ ਬਡੇ ਭਟ ਘਾਏ ॥੧੧੬੨॥
faadh pariyo rath te tatakaal le as dtaal badde bhatt ghaae |1162|
The king Anag Singh jumped instantly out of his chariod and killed may warriors with the sword.1162.
ਠਾਢੋ ਹੁਤੋ ਭਟ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਜਦੁਬੀਰ ਕੋ ਸੋ ਅਣਗੇਸ ਜੂ ਨੈਨ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
tthaadto huto bhatt sree jadubeer ko so anages joo nain nihaariyo |
ਪਾਇਨ ਕੀ ਕਰਿ ਚੰਚਲਤਾ ਬਰ ਸੋ ਅਸਿ ਸਤ੍ਰ ਕੇ ਸੀਸ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
paaein kee kar chanchalataa bar so as satr ke sees prahaariyo |
The king Anag Singh saw the warriors of Krishna standing, he then speedily struck the blow of his sword on the head of the enemy
ਟੂਟਿ ਪਰਿਯੋ ਝਟਦੈ ਕਟਿਯੋ ਸਿਰ ਤਾ ਛਬਿ ਕੋ ਕਬਿ ਭਾਉ ਉਚਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
ttoott pariyo jhattadai kattiyo sir taa chhab ko kab bhaau uchaariyo |
ਮਾਨਹੁ ਰਾਹੁ ਨਿਸਾਕਰ ਕੋ ਨਭਿ ਮੰਡਲ ਤੇ ਹਨਿ ਕੈ ਛਿਤਿ ਡਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੧੧੬੩॥
maanahu raahu nisaakar ko nabh manddal te han kai chhit ddaariyo |1163|
The head of the enemy fell on the ground like Rahu killing and throwing down on the earth, the moon from the sky.1163.
ਕੂਦਿ ਚੜਿਯੋ ਅਰਿ ਕੇ ਰਥ ਊਪਰਿ ਸਾਰਥੀ ਕਉ ਬਧ ਕੈ ਤਬ ਹੀ ॥
kood charriyo ar ke rath aoopar saarathee kau badh kai tab hee |
ਧਨੁ ਬਾਨ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ ਗਦਾ ਬਰਛੀ ਅਰਿ ਕੇ ਕਰਿ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਲਏ ਸਬ ਹੀ ॥
dhan baan kripaan gadaa barachhee ar ke kar sasatr le sab hee |
After killing the charioteer of the enemy, the king mounted on his chariot and carried his weapons bow and arrows, sword, mace and spear in his hands
ਰਥ ਆਪ ਹੀ ਹਾਕ ਹੈ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਮਧਿ ਜਾਦਵ ਸੈਨ ਪਰਿਯੋ ਜਬ ਹੀ ॥
rath aap hee haak hai sayaam kahai madh jaadav sain pariyo jab hee |
He himself began to drive his chariot within the Yadava army
ਇਕ ਮਾਰਿ ਲਏ ਇਕ ਭਾਜਿ ਗਏ ਇਕ ਠਾਢਿ ਭਏ ਤੇਊ ਨ ਦਬਹੀ ॥੧੧੬੪॥
eik maar le ik bhaaj ge ik tthaadt bhe teaoo na dabahee |1164|
With his blows someone was killed, someone fled away and someone being wonder-struck, kept standing.1164.
ਆਪਨ ਹੀ ਰਥ ਹਾਕਤ ਹੈ ਅਰੁ ਆਪਨ ਹੀ ਸਰ ਜਾਲ ਚਲਾਵੈ ॥
aapan hee rath haakat hai ar aapan hee sar jaal chalaavai |
Now he himself is driving the chariot and showering his arrows
ਆਪਨ ਹੀ ਰਿਪੁ ਘਾਇ ਬਚਾਵਤ ਆਪਨ ਹੀ ਅਰਿ ਘਾਇ ਲਗਾਵੈ ॥
aapan hee rip ghaae bachaavat aapan hee ar ghaae lagaavai |
He himself is safe from the blows of the enemy and is himself inflicting blows on the enemy
ਏਕਨ ਕੇ ਧਨੁ ਬਾਨ ਕਟੇ ਭਟ ਏਕਨ ਕੇ ਰਥ ਕਾਟਿ ਗਿਰਾਵੈ ॥
ekan ke dhan baan katte bhatt ekan ke rath kaatt giraavai |
He has chopped the bow of some warrior and has shattered someone’s chariot
ਦਾਮਨਿ ਜਿਉ ਦਮਕੈ ਘਟ ਮੈ ਕਰ ਮੈ ਕਰਵਾਰਹਿ ਤਿਉ ਚਮਕਾਵੈ ॥੧੧੬੫॥
daaman jiau damakai ghatt mai kar mai karavaareh tiau chamakaavai |1165|
The sword in his hand is shining like the flash of lightning amongst the coulds.1165.
ਮਾਰਿ ਕੈ ਬੀਰ ਘਨੇ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਬਹੁ ਕੋਪ ਕੈ ਦਾਤਨ ਓਠ ਚਬਾਵੈ ॥
maar kai beer ghane ran mai bahu kop kai daatan otth chabaavai |
The king Anag Singh, after killing many warriors in the battlefield, is cutting his lips with his teeth
ਆਵਤ ਜੋ ਇਹ ਕੇ ਅਰਿ ਊਪਰਿ ਬਾਨਨ ਸਿਉ ਤਿਹ ਕਾਟਿ ਗਿਰਾਵੈ ॥
aavat jo ih ke ar aoopar baanan siau tih kaatt giraavai |
Whosoever falls upon him, he chops and throws him down
ਧਾਇ ਪਰੈ ਰਿਪੁ ਕੇ ਦਲ ਮੈ ਦਲ ਕੈ ਮਲ ਕੈ ਬਹੁਰੋ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵੈ ॥
dhaae parai rip ke dal mai dal kai mal kai bahuro fir aavai |
He has fallen upon the enemy’s army and is destroying it
ਜੁਧੁ ਕਰੈ ਨ ਡਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੋ ਅਰਿ ਕੇ ਰਥ ਕੋ ਬਲਿ ਓਰਿ ਚਲਾਵੈ ॥੧੧੬੬॥
judh karai na ddarai har so ar ke rath ko bal or chalaavai |1166|
He does not have any fear of Krishna, while fighting and with great effort is driving his chariot towards Balram.1166.

Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਏਕੁ ਮਰੈ ਪੰਚੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਰੋਵਹਿ ॥
ek marai panche mil roveh |
When someone dies, the five passions meet and mourn his death.
ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਵਹਿ ॥
haumai jaae sabad mal dhoveh |
Overcoming self-conceit, he washes off his filth with the Word of the Shabad.
ਸਮਝਿ ਸੂਝਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਹੋਵਹਿ ॥
samajh soojh sehaj ghar hoveh |
One who knows and understands, enters the home of peace and poise.
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਸਗਲੀ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਵਹਿ ॥੧॥
bin boojhe sagalee pat khoveh |1|
Without understanding, he loses all his honor. ||1||
ਕਉਣੁ ਮਰੈ ਕਉਣੁ ਰੋਵੈ ਓਹੀ ॥
kaun marai kaun rovai ohee |
Who dies, and who weeps for him?
ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਭਸੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਤੋਹੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
karan kaaran sabhasai sir tohee |1| rahaau |
O Lord, Creator, Cause of causes, You are over the heads of all. ||1||Pause||
ਮੂਏ ਕਉ ਰੋਵੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
mooe kau rovai dukh koe |
Who weeps over the pain of the dead?
ਸੋ ਰੋਵੈ ਜਿਸੁ ਬੇਦਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
so rovai jis bedan hoe |
Those who weep, do so over their own troubles.
ਜਿਸੁ ਬੀਤੀ ਜਾਣੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੋਇ ॥
jis beetee jaanai prabh soe |
God knows the condition of those who are so affected.
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥
aape karataa kare su hoe |2|
Whatever the Creator does, comes to pass. ||2||
ਜੀਵਤ ਮਰਣਾ ਤਾਰੇ ਤਰਣਾ ॥
jeevat maranaa taare taranaa |
One who remains dead while yet alive, is saved, and saves others as well.
ਜੈ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਪਰਮ ਗਤਿ ਸਰਣਾ ॥
jai jagadees param gat saranaa |
Celebrate the Victory of the Lord; taking to His Sanctuary, the supreme status is obtained.
ਹਉ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਚਰਣਾ ॥
hau balihaaree satigur charanaa |
I am a sacrifice to the feet of the True Guru.
ਗੁਰੁ ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਭੈ ਤਰਣਾ ॥੩॥
gur bohith sabad bhai taranaa |3|
The Guru is the boat; through the Shabad of His Word, the terrifying world-ocean is crossed over. ||3||
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਆਪਿ ਨਿਰੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ॥
nirbhau aap nirantar jot |
He Himself is Fearless; His Divine Light is contained in all.
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸੂਤਕੁ ਜਗਿ ਛੋਤਿ ॥
bin naavai sootak jag chhot |
Without the Name, the world is defiled and untouchable.
ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਕਿਆ ਕਹਿ ਰੋਤਿ ॥
duramat binasai kiaa keh rot |
Through evil-mindedness, they are ruined; why should they cry out and weep?
ਜਨਮਿ ਮੂਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਰੋਤਿ ॥੪॥
janam mooe bin bhagat sarot |4|
They are born only to die, without hearing the music of devotional worship. ||4||
ਮੂਏ ਕਉ ਸਚੁ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਮੀਤ ॥
mooe kau sach roveh meet |
Only one's true friends mourn one's death.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਨੀਤਾ ਨੀਤ ॥
trai gun roveh neetaa neet |
Those under the sway of the three dispositions continue to mourn on and on.
ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਚੀਤ ॥
dukh sukh parahar sehaj sucheet |
Disregarding pain and pleasure, center your consciousness on the Lord.
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸਉਪਉ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਪਰੀਤਿ ॥੫॥
tan man saupau krisan pareet |5|
Dedicate your body and mind to the Love of the Lord. ||5||
ਭੀਤਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਅਨੇਕ ਅਸੰਖ ॥
bheetar ek anek asankh |
The One Lord dwells within the various and countless beings.
ਕਰਮ ਧਰਮ ਬਹੁ ਸੰਖ ਅਸੰਖ ॥
karam dharam bahu sankh asankh |
There are so many rituals and religious faiths, their number is innumerable.
ਬਿਨੁ ਭੈ ਭਗਤੀ ਜਨਮੁ ਬਿਰੰਥ ॥
bin bhai bhagatee janam biranth |
Without the Fear of God, and devotional worship, one's life is in vain.
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਪਰਮਾਰੰਥ ॥੬॥
har gun gaaveh mil paramaaranth |6|
Singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, the supreme wealth is obtained. ||6||
ਆਪਿ ਮਰੈ ਮਾਰੇ ਭੀ ਆਪਿ ॥
aap marai maare bhee aap |
He Himself dies, and He Himself kills.
ਆਪਿ ਉਪਾਏ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪਿ ॥
aap upaae thaap uthaap |
He Himself establishes, and having established, disestablishes.
ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਉਪਾਈ ਜੋਤੀ ਤੂ ਜਾਤਿ ॥
srisatt upaaee jotee too jaat |
He created the Universe, and by His Divine Nature, instilled His Divine Light into it.
ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ਮਿਲਣੁ ਨਹੀ ਭ੍ਰਾਤਿ ॥੭॥
sabad veechaar milan nahee bhraat |7|
One who reflects upon the Word of the Shabad, meets the Lord, without doubt. ||7||
ਸੂਤਕੁ ਅਗਨਿ ਭਖੈ ਜਗੁ ਖਾਇ ॥
sootak agan bhakhai jag khaae |
Pollution is the burning fire, which is consuming the world.
ਸੂਤਕੁ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਸਭ ਹੀ ਥਾਇ ॥
sootak jal thal sabh hee thaae |
Pollution is in the water, upon the land, and everywhere.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੂਤਕਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੀਜੈ ॥
naanak sootak janam mareejai |
O Nanak, people are born and die in pollution.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸੁ ਪੀਜੈ ॥੮॥੪॥
gur parasaadee har ras peejai |8|4|
By Guru's Grace, they drink in the Lord's sublime elixir. ||8||4||

Aasaa, First Mehl:
ਆਪੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੈ ਸੁ ਪਰਖੇ ਹੀਰਾ ॥
aap veechaarai su parakhe heeraa |
One who contemplates his own self, tests the worth of the jewel.
ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਤਾਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰਾ ॥
ek drisatt taare gur pooraa |
With a single glance, the Perfect Guru saves him.
ਗੁਰੁ ਮਾਨੈ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਧੀਰਾ ॥੧॥
gur maanai man te man dheeraa |1|
When the Guru is pleased, one's mind comforts itself. ||1||
ਐਸਾ ਸਾਹੁ ਸਰਾਫੀ ਕਰੈ ॥
aisaa saahu saraafee karai |
He is such a banker, who tests us.
ਸਾਚੀ ਨਦਰਿ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਤਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
saachee nadar ek liv tarai |1| rahaau |
By His True Glance of Grace, we are blessed with the Love of the One Lord, and are saved. ||1||Pause||
ਪੂੰਜੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
poonjee naam niranjan saar |
The capital of the Naam is immaculate and sublime.
ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਾਚਿ ਰਤਾ ਪੈਕਾਰੁ ॥
niramal saach rataa paikaar |
That peddler is rendered pure, who is imbued with the Truth.
ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਹਜ ਘਰਿ ਗੁਰੁ ਕਰਤਾਰੁ ॥੨॥
sifat sehaj ghar gur karataar |2|
Praising the Lord, in the house of poise, he attains the Guru, the Creator. ||2||
ਆਸਾ ਮਨਸਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
aasaa manasaa sabad jalaae |
One who burns away hope and desire through the Word of the Shabad,
ਰਾਮ ਨਰਾਇਣੁ ਕਹੈ ਕਹਾਏ ॥
raam naraaein kahai kahaae |
chants the Lord's Name, and inspires others to chant it as well.
ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਵਾਟ ਮਹਲੁ ਘਰੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੩॥
gur te vaatt mehal ghar paae |3|
Through the Guru, he finds the Path home, to the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||3||
ਕੰਚਨ ਕਾਇਆ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਨੂਪੁ ॥
kanchan kaaeaa jot anoop |
His body becomes golden, by the Lord's Incomparable Light.
ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਦੇਵਾ ਸਗਲ ਸਰੂਪੁ ॥
tribhavan devaa sagal saroop |
He beholds the divine beauty in all the three worlds.
ਮੈ ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਪਲੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਅਖੂਟੁ ॥੪॥
mai so dhan palai saach akhoott |4|
That inexhaustible wealth of Truth is now in my lap. ||4||
ਪੰਚ ਤੀਨਿ ਨਵ ਚਾਰਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥
panch teen nav chaar samaavai |
In the five elements, the three worlds, the nine regions and the four directions, the Lord is pervading.
ਧਰਣਿ ਗਗਨੁ ਕਲ ਧਾਰਿ ਰਹਾਵੈ ॥
dharan gagan kal dhaar rahaavai |
He supports the earth and the sky, exercising His almighty power.
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਾਤਉ ਉਲਟਿ ਪਰਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
baahar jaatau ulatt paraavai |5|
He turns the outgoing mind around. ||5||
ਮੂਰਖੁ ਹੋਇ ਨ ਆਖੀ ਸੂਝੈ ॥
moorakh hoe na aakhee soojhai |
The fool does not realize what he sees with his eyes.
ਜਿਹਵਾ ਰਸੁ ਨਹੀ ਕਹਿਆ ਬੂਝੈ ॥
jihavaa ras nahee kahiaa boojhai |
He does not taste with his tongue, and does not understand what is said.
ਬਿਖੁ ਕਾ ਮਾਤਾ ਜਗ ਸਿਉ ਲੂਝੈ ॥੬॥
bikh kaa maataa jag siau loojhai |6|
Intoxicated with poison, he argues with the world. ||6||
ਊਤਮ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਊਤਮੁ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
aootam sangat aootam hovai |
In the uplifting society, one is uplifted.
ਗੁਣ ਕਉ ਧਾਵੈ ਅਵਗਣ ਧੋਵੈ ॥
gun kau dhaavai avagan dhovai |
He chases after virtue and washes off his sins.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ॥੭॥
bin gur seve sehaj na hovai |7|
Without serving the Guru, celestial poise is not obtained. ||7||
ਹੀਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਵੇਹਰ ਲਾਲੁ ॥
heeraa naam javehar laal |
The Naam, the Name of the Lord, is a diamond, a jewel, a ruby.
ਮਨੁ ਮੋਤੀ ਹੈ ਤਿਸ ਕਾ ਮਾਲੁ ॥
man motee hai tis kaa maal |
The pearl of the mind is the inner wealth.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪਰਖੈ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲੁ ॥੮॥੫॥
naanak parakhai nadar nihaal |8|5|
O Nanak, the Lord tests us, and blesses us with His Glance of Grace. ||8||5||
