ਮਾਰ ਕੈ ਰਾਕਸ ਕੋ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਤਿਹ ਕੇ ਉਰ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਖ ਨਿਕਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
maar kai raakas ko tab hee tih ke ur te har sankh nikaariyo |
After killing the demon, Krishna took out the conch from his heart
ਬੇਦਨ ਕੀ ਜਿਹ ਤੇ ਧੁਨਿ ਹੋਵਤ ਕਾਢਿ ਲੀਯੋ ਸੋਊ ਜੋ ਰਿਪੁ ਮਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
bedan kee jih te dhun hovat kaadt leeyo soaoo jo rip maariyo |
This conch obtained by killing the enemy, resounded the Vedic mantras
ਤਉ ਹਰਿ ਜੂ ਮਨ ਆਨੰਦ ਕੈ ਸੁਤ ਸੂਰਜ ਕੇ ਪੁਰ ਮੋ ਪਗ ਧਾਰਿਯੋ ॥
tau har joo man aanand kai sut sooraj ke pur mo pag dhaariyo |
ਸੋ ਲਖ ਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਇ ਪਰਿਯੋ ਮਨ ਕੋ ਸਭ ਸੋਕ ਬਿਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਡਾਰਿਯੋ ॥੮੮੯॥
so lakh kai har paae pariyo man ko sabh sok bidaa kar ddaariyo |889|
In this way, highly pleased, Krishna entered the world of Yama, where the god of death came and fell at his feet, thus removing all his sorrows.889.
ਸੂਰਜ ਕੇ ਸੁਤ ਮੰਡਲ ਮੈ ਜਦੁ ਨੰਦਨ ਟੇਰਿ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਮੁਖ ਸੋਂ ॥
sooraj ke sut manddal mai jad nandan tter kahiyo mukh son |
ਮੋ ਗੁਰ ਕੋ ਸੁਤ ਹਿਯਾ ਨ ਕਹੂੰ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸੁ ਕਿਧੌ ਜਮ ਸੋਂ ॥
mo gur ko sut hiyaa na kahoon ih bhaat kahiyo su kidhau jam son |
Seeing the world of Yama, Krishna made this utterance from his mouth, “Is the sone of my Guru not here?”
ਜਮ ਐਸੇ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਨ ਫਿਰੈ ਜਮ ਲੋਕ ਤੇ ਦੇਵਨ ਕੇ ਫੁਨਿ ਆਇਸ ਸੋਂ ॥
jam aise kahiyo na firai jam lok te devan ke fun aaeis son |
Yama said, “No one, who has come here, can leave this world, even on the bidding of the gods
ਤਬ ਹੀ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਹੁ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਕਰਿ ਫੇਰਿ ਨ ਪੰਡਤ ਬਾਮਨ ਕੋ ਸੁਤ ਸੋਂ ॥੮੯੦॥
tab hee har dehu kahiyo kar fer na panddat baaman ko sut son |890|
” But Krishna asked Yama to return the son of the Brahmin.890.
ਜਮੁ ਆਇਸ ਪਾਇ ਕਿਧੌ ਹਰਿ ਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਸੋਊ ਪਾਇਨ ਆਨਿ ਲਗਾਯੋ ॥
jam aaeis paae kidhau har te har ke soaoo paaein aan lagaayo |
On receiving the order of Krishna, Yama brought forth the son of Krishna’s Guru at his feet
ਲੈ ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਜਦੁਰਾਇ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਅਪਨੇ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
lai tin ko jaduraae chaliyo at hee apane man mai sukh paayo |
Taking him, Krishna, the king of Yadavas, being greatly pleased in his mind, started on his return journey
ਲ︀ਯਾਇ ਕੈ ਤਾਹੀ ਕੌ ਪੈ ਸੰਗ ਕੈ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਨ ਊਪਰ ਸੀਸ ਝੁਕਾਯੋ ॥
layaae kai taahee kau pai sang kai gur paaein aoopar sees jhukaayo |
ਹੋਇ ਬਿਦਾ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਕਬਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਪੁਰਿ ਆਯੋ ॥੮੯੧॥
hoe bidaa tab hee gur te kab sayaam kahai apune pur aayo |891|
Bringing the Guru’s son with him, Krishna bowed his head at the feet of the Guru and bidding him farewell, he came back to his city.891.

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
ਪਾਵਤੁ ਰਲੀਆ ਜੋਬਨਿ ਬਲੀਆ ॥
paavat raleea joban baleea |
The mortal revels in joy, in the vigor of youth;
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਾਟੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਲੀਆ ॥੧॥
naam binaa maattee sang raleea |1|
but without the Name, he mingles with dust. ||1||
ਕਾਨ ਕੁੰਡਲੀਆ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਓਢਲੀਆ ॥
kaan kunddaleea basatr odtaleea |
He may wear ear-rings and fine clothes,
ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਲੀਆ ਮਨਿ ਗਰਬਲੀਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sej sukhaleea man garabaleea |1| rahaau |
and have a comfortable bed, and his mind may be so proud. ||1||Pause||
ਤਲੈ ਕੁੰਚਰੀਆ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਨਿਕ ਛਤਰੀਆ ॥
talai kunchareea sir kanik chhatareea |
He may have elephants to ride, and golden umbrellas over his head;
ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਬਿਨਾ ਲੇ ਧਰਨਿ ਗਡਲੀਆ ॥੨॥
har bhagat binaa le dharan gaddaleea |2|
but without devotional worship to the Lord, he is buried beneath the dirt. ||2||
ਰੂਪ ਸੁੰਦਰੀਆ ਅਨਿਕ ਇਸਤਰੀਆ ॥
roop sundareea anik isatareea |
He may enjoy many women, of exquisite beauty;
ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਭਿ ਸੁਆਦ ਫਿਕਰੀਆ ॥੩॥
har ras bin sabh suaad fikareea |3|
but without the sublime essence of the Lord, all tastes are tasteless. ||3||
ਮਾਇਆ ਛਲੀਆ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਬਿਖਲੀਆ ॥
maaeaa chhaleea bikaar bikhaleea |
Deluded by Maya, the mortal is led into sin and corruption.
ਸਰਣਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪੁਰਖ ਦਇਅਲੀਆ ॥੪॥੪॥੫੫॥
saran naanak prabh purakh deialeea |4|4|55|
Nanak seeks the Sanctuary of God, the All-powerful, Compassionate Lord. ||4||4||55||

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
ਏਕੁ ਬਗੀਚਾ ਪੇਡ ਘਨ ਕਰਿਆ ॥
ek bageechaa pedd ghan kariaa |
There is a garden, in which so many plants have grown.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਤਹਾ ਮਹਿ ਫਲਿਆ ॥੧॥
amrit naam tahaa meh faliaa |1|
They bear the Ambrosial Nectar of the Naam as their fruit. ||1||
ਐਸਾ ਕਰਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ॥
aisaa karahu beechaar giaanee |
Consider this, O wise one,
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਪਦੁ ਨਿਰਬਾਨੀ ॥
jaa te paaeeai pad nirabaanee |
by which you may attain the state of Nirvaanaa.
ਆਸਿ ਪਾਸਿ ਬਿਖੂਆ ਕੇ ਕੁੰਟਾ ਬੀਚਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਹੈ ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aas paas bikhooaa ke kunttaa beech amrit hai bhaaee re |1| rahaau |
All around this garden are pools of poison, but within it is the Ambrosial Nectar, O Siblings of Destiny. ||1||Pause||
ਸਿੰਚਨਹਾਰੇ ਏਕੈ ਮਾਲੀ ॥
sinchanahaare ekai maalee |
There is only one gardener who tends it.
ਖਬਰਿ ਕਰਤੁ ਹੈ ਪਾਤ ਪਤ ਡਾਲੀ ॥੨॥
khabar karat hai paat pat ddaalee |2|
He takes care of every leaf and branch. ||2||
ਸਗਲ ਬਨਸਪਤਿ ਆਣਿ ਜੜਾਈ ॥
sagal banasapat aan jarraaee |
He brings all sorts of plants and plants them there.
ਸਗਲੀ ਫੂਲੀ ਨਿਫਲ ਨ ਕਾਈ ॥੩॥
sagalee foolee nifal na kaaee |3|
They all bear fruit - none is without fruit. ||3||
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਫਲੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
amrit fal naam jin gur te paaeaa |
One who receives the Ambrosial Fruit of the Naam from the Guru
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਤਰੀ ਤਿਨਿ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੫॥੫੬॥
naanak daas taree tin maaeaa |4|5|56|
- O Nanak, such a servant crosses over the ocean of Maya. ||4||5||56||

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
ਰਾਜ ਲੀਲਾ ਤੇਰੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਬਨਾਈ ॥
raaj leelaa terai naam banaaee |
The pleasures of royalty are derived from Your Name.
ਜੋਗੁ ਬਨਿਆ ਤੇਰਾ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗਾਈ ॥੧॥
jog baniaa teraa keeratan gaaee |1|
I attain Yoga, singing the Kirtan of Your Praises. ||1||
ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖਾ ਬਨੇ ਤੇਰੈ ਓਲੑੈ ॥
sarab sukhaa bane terai olai |
All comforts are obtained in Your Shelter.
ਭ੍ਰਮ ਕੇ ਪਰਦੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਖੋਲੑੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bhram ke parade satigur kholae |1| rahaau |
The True Guru has removed the veil of doubt. ||1||Pause||
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਬੂਝਿ ਰੰਗ ਰਸ ਮਾਣੇ ॥
hukam boojh rang ras maane |
Understanding the Command of the Lord's Will, I revel in pleasure and joy.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਮਹਾ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੇ ॥੨॥
satigur sevaa mahaa nirabaane |2|
Serving the True Guru, I obtain the supreme state of Nirvaanaa. ||2||
ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂੰ ਜਾਤਾ ਸੋ ਗਿਰਸਤ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
jin toon jaataa so girasat udaasee paravaan |
One who recognizes You is recognized as a householder, and as a renunciate.
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤਾ ਸੋਈ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੁ ॥੩॥
naam rataa soee nirabaan |3|
Imbued with the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he dwells in Nirvaanaa. ||3||
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨਾ ॥
jaa kau milio naam nidhaanaa |
One who has obtained the treasure of the Naam
ਭਨਤਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਪੂਰ ਖਜਾਨਾ ॥੪॥੬॥੫੭॥
bhanat naanak taa kaa poor khajaanaa |4|6|57|
- prays Nanak, his treasure-house is filled to overflowing. ||4||6||57||

ਤੀਰਥਿ ਜਾਉ ਤ ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤੇ ॥
teerath jaau ta hau hau karate |
Journeying to sacred shrines of pilgrimage, I see the mortals acting in ego.
ਪੰਡਿਤ ਪੂਛਉ ਤ ਮਾਇਆ ਰਾਤੇ ॥੧॥
panddit poochhau ta maaeaa raate |1|
If I ask the Pandits, I find them tainted by Maya. ||1||
ਸੋ ਅਸਥਾਨੁ ਬਤਾਵਹੁ ਮੀਤਾ ॥
so asathaan bataavahu meetaa |
Show me that place, O friend,
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਨੀਤਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaa kai har har keeratan neetaa |1| rahaau |
where the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises are forever sung. ||1||Pause||
ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਬੇਦ ਪਾਪ ਪੁੰਨ ਵੀਚਾਰ ॥
saasatr bed paap pun veechaar |
The Shaastras and the Vedas speak of sin and virtue;
ਨਰਕਿ ਸੁਰਗਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਅਉਤਾਰ ॥੨॥
narak surag fir fir aautaar |2|
they say that mortals are reincarnated into heaven and hell, over and over again. ||2||
ਗਿਰਸਤ ਮਹਿ ਚਿੰਤ ਉਦਾਸ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ॥
girasat meh chint udaas ahankaar |
In the householder's life, there is anxiety, and in the life of the renunciate, there is egotism.
ਕਰਮ ਕਰਤ ਜੀਅ ਕਉ ਜੰਜਾਰ ॥੩॥
karam karat jeea kau janjaar |3|
Performing religious rituals, the soul is entangled. ||3||
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਵਸਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
prabh kirapaa te man vas aaeaa |
By God's Grace, the mind is brought under control;
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਤਰੀ ਤਿਨਿ ਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
naanak guramukh taree tin maaeaa |4|
O Nanak, the Gurmukh crosses over the ocean of Maya. ||4||
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਗਾਈਐ ॥
saadhasang har keeratan gaaeeai |
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, sing the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises.
ਇਹੁ ਅਸਥਾਨੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਤੇ ਪਾਈਐ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੭॥੫੮॥
eihu asathaan guroo te paaeeai |1| rahaau doojaa |7|58|
This place is found through the Guru. ||1||Second Pause||7||58||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
ਘਰ ਮਹਿ ਸੂਖ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਫੁਨਿ ਸੂਖਾ ॥
ghar meh sookh baahar fun sookhaa |
Within my home there is peace, and outwardly there is peace as well.
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਸਗਲ ਬਿਨਾਸੇ ਦੂਖਾ ॥੧॥
har simarat sagal binaase dookhaa |1|
Remembering the Lord in meditation, all pains are erased. ||1||
ਸਗਲ ਸੂਖ ਜਾਂ ਤੂੰ ਚਿਤਿ ਆਂਵੈਂ ॥
sagal sookh jaan toon chit aanvain |
There is total peace, when You come into my mind.
ਸੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪੈ ਜੋ ਜਨੁ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
so naam japai jo jan tudh bhaavai |1| rahaau |
He alone is pleasing to Your Will, who chants the Naam. ||1||Pause||
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਜਪਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ॥
tan man seetal jap naam teraa |
My body and mind are cooled and soothed, chanting the Name of the Lord.
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਤ ਢਹੈ ਦੁਖ ਡੇਰਾ ॥੨॥
har har japat dtahai dukh dderaa |2|
Meditating on the Lord, Har, Har, the house of pain is demolished. ||2||
ਹੁਕਮੁ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੋਈ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥
hukam boojhai soee paravaan |
He alone, who understands the Command of the Lord's Will, is approved.
ਸਾਚੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਨੀਸਾਨੁ ॥੩॥
saach sabad jaa kaa neesaan |3|
The True Shabad of the Word of God is his trademark and insignia. ||3||
ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ॥
gur poorai har naam drirraaeaa |
The Perfect Guru has implanted the Lord's Name within me.
ਭਨਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਮੇਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੮॥੫੯॥
bhanat naanak merai man sukh paaeaa |4|8|59|
Prays Nanak, my mind has found peace. ||4||8||59||
