ਜੁਧ ਬਡੋ ਕਰ ਕੈ ਤਿਹ ਕੈ ਸੰਗ ਜਉ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਬਡੋ ਅਰਿ ਮਾਰਿਓ ॥
judh baddo kar kai tih kai sang jau bhagavaan baddo ar maario |
ਨਾਰਦ ਤਉ ਮਥੁਰਾ ਮੈ ਗਯੋ ਬਚਨਾ ਸੰਗ ਕੰਸ ਕੇ ਐਸੇ ਉਚਾਰਿਓ ॥
naarad tau mathuraa mai gayo bachanaa sang kans ke aise uchaario |
While fighting with Vrishabhasura, when Lord Krishna killed the great enemy, then Narada went to Mathura and said to Kansa,
ਤੂ ਭਗਨੀਪਤਿ ਨੰਦ ਸੁਤਾ ਹਰਿ ਤ੍ਵੈ ਰਿਪੁ ਵਾ ਘਰ ਭੀਤਰ ਡਾਰਿਓ ॥
too bhaganeepat nand sutaa har tvai rip vaa ghar bheetar ddaario |
“The husband of your sister, the daughter of Nand and Krishna – all these enemies of yours are prospering in your kingdom
ਦੈਤ ਅਘਾਸੁਰ ਅਉ ਬਕ ਬੀਰ ਮਰਿਓ ਤਿਨ ਹੂੰ ਜਬ ਪਉਰਖ ਹਾਰਿਓ ॥੭੭੦॥
dait aghaasur aau bak beer mario tin hoon jab paurakh haario |770|
It was through them that Aghasura and Bakasura were defeated and killed.”770.

ਕੋਪ ਭਰਿਯੋ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਮਥੁਰਾਪਤਿ ਚਿੰਤ ਕਰੀ ਇਹ ਕੋ ਅਬ ਮਰੀਐ ॥
kop bhariyo man mai mathuraapat chint karee ih ko ab mareeai |
Kansa, the king of Mathura, getting infuriated in his mind, resolved that they may be killed by any means
ਇਹ ਕੀ ਸਮ ਕਾਰਜ ਅਉਰ ਕਛੂ ਨਹਿ ਤਾ ਬਧਿ ਆਪਨ ਊਬਰੀਐ ॥
eih kee sam kaaraj aaur kachhoo neh taa badh aapan aoobareeai |
There is no other work of so much importance before me, I must fulfil this task at the earliest and save myself by killing my would-be killer
ਤਬ ਨਾਰਦ ਬੋਲਿ ਉਠਿਓ ਹਸਿ ਕੈ ਸੁਨੀਐ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕਾਰਜ ਯਾ ਕਰੀਐ ॥

ਛਲ ਸੋ ਬਲ ਸੋ ਕਬਿ ਸ︀ਯਾਮ ਕਹੈ ਅਪਨੇ ਅਰਿ ਕੋ ਸਿਰ ਵਾ ਹਰੀਐ ॥੭੭੧॥
chhal so bal so kab sayaam kahai apane ar ko sir vaa hareeai |771|
Then Narada said smilingly, “O King! You must definitely perform this one task and with deceit or strength or any other means, slash the head of your enemy.”771.

ਤਬ ਕੰਸ ਪ੍ਰਨਾਮ ਕਹੀ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਸੁਨੀਐ ਰਿਖਿ ਜੂ ਤੁਮ ਸਤਿ ਕਹੀ ਹੈ ॥
tab kans pranaam kahee kar kai suneeai rikh joo tum sat kahee hai |
Then bowing before him, Kansa said, “O great sage! Your saying is true
ਵਾ ਕੀ ਬ੍ਰਿਥਾ ਰਜਨੀ ਦਿਨ ਮੈ ਹਮਰੈ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਬਸਿ ਕੈ ਸੁ ਰਹੀ ਹੈ ॥
vaa kee brithaa rajanee din mai hamarai man mai bas kai su rahee hai |
The story of these killings permeates like the shadow of night in the day of my heart
ਜਾਹਿ ਮਰਿਓ ਅਘੁ ਦੈਤ ਬਲੀ ਬਕੁ ਪੂਤਨਾ ਜਾ ਥਨ ਜਾਇ ਗਹੀ ਹੈ ॥
jaeh mario agh dait balee bak pootanaa jaa than jaae gahee hai |
ਤਾ ਮਰੀਐ ਛਲ ਕੈ ਕਿਧੌ ਸੰਗਿ ਕਿ ਕੈ ਬਲ ਕੈ ਇਹ ਬਾਤ ਸਹੀ ਹੈ ॥੭੭੨॥
taa mareeai chhal kai kidhau sang ki kai bal kai ih baat sahee hai |772|
He, who has killed Agha and brave Baka and Putana, it will be appropriate to kill him through deceit, strength or any other means.”772.

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
ਪਰਦੇਸੁ ਝਾਗਿ ਸਉਦੇ ਕਉ ਆਇਆ ॥
parades jhaag saude kau aaeaa |
Having wandered through foreign lands, I have come here to do business.
ਵਸਤੁ ਅਨੂਪ ਸੁਣੀ ਲਾਭਾਇਆ ॥
vasat anoop sunee laabhaaeaa |
I heard of the incomparable and profitable merchandise.
ਗੁਣ ਰਾਸਿ ਬੰਨੑਿ ਪਲੈ ਆਨੀ ॥
gun raas bana palai aanee |
I have gathered in my pockets my capital of virtue, and I have brought it here with me.
ਦੇਖਿ ਰਤਨੁ ਇਹੁ ਮਨੁ ਲਪਟਾਨੀ ॥੧॥
dekh ratan ihu man lapattaanee |1|
Beholding the jewel, this mind is fascinated. ||1||
ਸਾਹ ਵਾਪਾਰੀ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਆਏ ॥
saah vaapaaree duaarai aae |
I have come to the door of the Trader.
ਵਖਰੁ ਕਾਢਹੁ ਸਉਦਾ ਕਰਾਏ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
vakhar kaadtahu saudaa karaae |1| rahaau |
Please display the merchandise, so that the business may be transacted. ||1||Pause||
ਸਾਹਿ ਪਠਾਇਆ ਸਾਹੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥
saeh patthaaeaa saahai paas |
The Trader has sent me to the Banker.
ਅਮੋਲ ਰਤਨ ਅਮੋਲਾ ਰਾਸਿ ॥
amol ratan amolaa raas |
The jewel is priceless, and the capital is priceless.
ਵਿਸਟੁ ਸੁਭਾਈ ਪਾਇਆ ਮੀਤ ॥
visatt subhaaee paaeaa meet |
O my gentle brother, mediator and friend
ਸਉਦਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਨਿਹਚਲ ਚੀਤ ॥੨॥
saudaa miliaa nihachal cheet |2|
- I have obtained the merchandise, and my consciousness is now steady and stable. ||2||
ਭਉ ਨਹੀ ਤਸਕਰ ਪਉਣ ਨ ਪਾਨੀ ॥
bhau nahee tasakar paun na paanee |
I have no fear of thieves, of wind or water.
ਸਹਜਿ ਵਿਹਾਝੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
sehaj vihaajhee sehaj lai jaanee |
I have easily made my purchase, and I easily take it away.
ਸਤ ਕੈ ਖਟਿਐ ਦੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
sat kai khattiai dukh nahee paaeaa |
I have earned Truth, and I shall have no pain.
ਸਹੀ ਸਲਾਮਤਿ ਘਰਿ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ॥੩॥
sahee salaamat ghar lai aaeaa |3|
I have brought this merchandise home, safe and sound. ||3||
ਮਿਲਿਆ ਲਾਹਾ ਭਏ ਅਨੰਦ ॥
miliaa laahaa bhe anand |
I have earned the profit, and I am happy.
ਧੰਨੁ ਸਾਹ ਪੂਰੇ ਬਖਸਿੰਦ ॥
dhan saah poore bakhasind |
Blessed is the Banker, the Perfect Bestower.
ਇਹੁ ਸਉਦਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕਿਨੈ ਵਿਰਲੈ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
eihu saudaa guramukh kinai viralai paaeaa |
How rare is the Gurmukh who obtains this merchandise;
ਸਹਲੀ ਖੇਪ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਲੈ ਆਇਆ ॥੪॥੬॥
sahalee khep naanak lai aaeaa |4|6|
Nanak has brought this profitable merchandise home. ||4||6||

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
ਗੁਨੁ ਅਵਗਨੁ ਮੇਰੋ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਬੀਚਾਰੋ ॥
gun avagan mero kachh na beechaaro |
He does not consider my merits or demerits.
ਨਹ ਦੇਖਿਓ ਰੂਪ ਰੰਗ ਸਂੀਗਾਰੋ ॥
neh dekhio roop rang saneegaaro |
He does not look at my beauty, color or decorations.
ਚਜ ਅਚਾਰ ਕਿਛੁ ਬਿਧਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੀ ॥
chaj achaar kichh bidh nahee jaanee |
I do not know the ways of wisdom and good conduct.
ਬਾਹ ਪਕਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਸੇਜੈ ਆਨੀ ॥੧॥
baah pakar pria sejai aanee |1|
But taking me by the arm, my Husband Lord has led me to His Bed. ||1||
ਸੁਨਿਬੋ ਸਖੀ ਕੰਤਿ ਹਮਾਰੋ ਕੀਅਲੋ ਖਸਮਾਨਾ ॥
sunibo sakhee kant hamaaro keealo khasamaanaa |
Hear, O my companions, my Husband, my Lord Master, possesses me.
ਕਰੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਧਾਰਿ ਰਾਖਿਓ ਕਰਿ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਕਿਆ ਜਾਨੈ ਇਹੁ ਲੋਕੁ ਅਜਾਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kar masatak dhaar raakhio kar apunaa kiaa jaanai ihu lok ajaanaa |1| rahaau |
Placing His Hand upon my forehead, He protects me as His Own. What do these ignorant people know? ||1||Pause||
ਸੁਹਾਗੁ ਹਮਾਰੋ ਅਬ ਹੁਣਿ ਸੋਹਿਓ ॥
suhaag hamaaro ab hun sohio |
My married life now appears so beauteous;
ਕੰਤੁ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਮੇਰੋ ਸਭੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਜੋਹਿਓ ॥
kant milio mero sabh dukh johio |
my Husband Lord has met me, and He sees all my pains.
ਆਂਗਨਿ ਮੇਰੈ ਸੋਭਾ ਚੰਦ ॥
aangan merai sobhaa chand |
Within the courtyard of my heart, the glory of the moon shines.
ਨਿਸਿ ਬਾਸੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਸੰਗਿ ਅਨੰਦ ॥੨॥
nis baasur pria sang anand |2|
Night and day, I have fun with my Beloved. ||2||
ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਹਮਾਰੇ ਰੰਗਿ ਚਲੂਲ ॥
basatr hamaare rang chalool |
My clothes are dyed the deep crimson color of the poppy.
ਸਗਲ ਆਭਰਣ ਸੋਭਾ ਕੰਠਿ ਫੂਲ ॥
sagal aabharan sobhaa kantth fool |
All the ornaments and garlands around my neck adorn me.
ਪ੍ਰਿਅ ਪੇਖੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਪਾਏ ਸਗਲ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥
pria pekhee drisatt paae sagal nidhaan |
Gazing upon my Beloved with my eyes, I have obtained all treasures;
ਦੁਸਟ ਦੂਤ ਕੀ ਚੂਕੀ ਕਾਨਿ ॥੩॥
dusatt doot kee chookee kaan |3|
I have shaken off the power of the evil demons. ||3||
ਸਦ ਖੁਸੀਆ ਸਦਾ ਰੰਗ ਮਾਣੇ ॥
sad khuseea sadaa rang maane |
I have obtained eternal bliss, and I constantly celebrate.
ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਮਹਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਨੇ ॥
nau nidh naam grih meh tripataane |
With the nine treasures of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, I am satisfied in my own home.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਉ ਪਿਰਹਿ ਸੀਗਾਰੀ ॥
kahu naanak jau pireh seegaaree |
Says Nanak, when the happy soul-bride is adorned by her Beloved,
ਥਿਰੁ ਸੋਹਾਗਨਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਭਤਾਰੀ ॥੪॥੭॥
thir sohaagan sang bhataaree |4|7|
she is forever happy with her Husband Lord. ||4||7||
ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Aasaa, Fifth Mehl:
ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇਇ ਕਰਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਕਰਨਾ ॥
daan dee kar poojaa karanaa |
They give you donations and worship you.
ਲੈਤ ਦੇਤ ਉਨੑ ਮੂਕਰਿ ਪਰਨਾ ॥
lait det una mookar paranaa |
You take from them, and then deny that they have given anything to you.
ਜਿਤੁ ਦਰਿ ਤੁਮੑ ਹੈ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਜਾਣਾ ॥
jit dar tuma hai braahaman jaanaa |
That door, through which you must ultimately go, O Brahmin
ਤਿਤੁ ਦਰਿ ਤੂੰਹੀ ਹੈ ਪਛੁਤਾਣਾ ॥੧॥
tit dar toonhee hai pachhutaanaa |1|
- at that door, you will come to regret and repent. ||1||
ਐਸੇ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣ ਡੂਬੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
aise braahaman ddoobe bhaaee |
Such Brahmins shall drown, O Siblings of Destiny;
ਨਿਰਾਪਰਾਧ ਚਿਤਵਹਿ ਬੁਰਿਆਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
niraaparaadh chitaveh buriaaee |1| rahaau |
they think of doing evil to the innocent. ||1||Pause||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਹਲਕਾਏ ॥
antar lobh fireh halakaae |
Within them is greed, and they wander around like mad dogs.
ਨਿੰਦਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਭਾਰੁ ਉਠਾਏ ॥
nindaa kareh sir bhaar utthaae |
They slander others and carry loads of sin upon their heads.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੂਠਾ ਚੇਤੈ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
maaeaa mootthaa chetai naahee |
Intoxicated by Maya, they do not think of the Lord.
ਭਰਮੇ ਭੂਲਾ ਬਹੁਤੀ ਰਾਹੀ ॥੨॥
bharame bhoolaa bahutee raahee |2|
Deluded by doubt, they wander off on many paths. ||2||
ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭੇਖ ਕਰਹਿ ਘਨੇਰੇ ॥
baahar bhekh kareh ghanere |
Outwardly, they wear various religious robes,
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਉਤਰੀ ਘੇਰੇ ॥
antar bikhiaa utaree ghere |
but within, they are enveloped by poison.
ਅਵਰ ਉਪਦੇਸੈ ਆਪਿ ਨ ਬੂਝੈ ॥
avar upadesai aap na boojhai |
They instruct others, but do not understand themselves.
ਐਸਾ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਕਹੀ ਨ ਸੀਝੈ ॥੩॥
aisaa braahaman kahee na seejhai |3|
Such Brahmins will never be emancipated. ||3||
ਮੂਰਖ ਬਾਮਣ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥
moorakh baaman prabhoo samaal |
O foolish Brahmin, reflect upon God.
ਦੇਖਤ ਸੁਨਤ ਤੇਰੈ ਹੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥
dekhat sunat terai hai naal |
He watches and hears, and is always with you.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੇ ਹੋਵੀ ਭਾਗੁ ॥
kahu naanak je hovee bhaag |
Says Nanak, if this is your destiny,
ਮਾਨੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਗੁਰ ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗੁ ॥੪॥੮॥
maan chhodd gur charanee laag |4|8|
renounce your pride, and grasp the Guru's Feet. ||4||8||

ਦੂਖ ਰੋਗ ਭਏ ਗਤੁ ਤਨ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥
dookh rog bhe gat tan te man niramal har har gun gaae |
Pain and disease have left my body, and my mind has become pure; I sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਭਏ ਅਨੰਦ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਅਬ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਕਤ ਹੀ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
bhe anand mil saadhoo sang ab meraa man kat hee na jaae |1|
I am in bliss, meeting with the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and now, my mind does not go wandering. ||1||
ਤਪਤਿ ਬੁਝੀ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਮਾਇ ॥
tapat bujhee gurasabadee maae |
My burning desires are quenched, through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, O mother.
ਬਿਨਸਿ ਗਇਓ ਤਾਪ ਸਭ ਸਹਸਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
binas geo taap sabh sahasaa gur seetal milio sehaj subhaae |1| rahaau |
The fever of doubt has been totally eliminated; meeting the Guru, I am cooled and soothed, with intuitive ease. ||1||Pause||
ਧਾਵਤ ਰਹੇ ਏਕੁ ਇਕੁ ਬੂਝਿਆ ਆਇ ਬਸੇ ਅਬ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਥਾਇ ॥
dhaavat rahe ek ik boojhiaa aae base ab nihachal thaae |
My wandering has ended, since I have realized the One and Only Lord; now, I have come to dwell in the eternal place.
ਜਗਤੁ ਉਧਾਰਨ ਸੰਤ ਤੁਮਾਰੇ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪੇਖਤ ਰਹੇ ਅਘਾਇ ॥੨॥
jagat udhaaran sant tumaare darasan pekhat rahe aghaae |2|
Your Saints are the Saving Grace of the world; beholding the Blessed Vision of their Darshan, I remain satisfied. ||2||
ਜਨਮ ਦੋਖ ਪਰੇ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਾਛੈ ਅਬ ਪਕਰੇ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਸਾਧੂ ਪਾਇ ॥
janam dokh pare mere paachhai ab pakare nihachal saadhoo paae |
I have left behind the sins of countless incarnations, now that I have grasped the feet of the eternal Holy Guru.
ਸਹਜ ਧੁਨਿ ਗਾਵੈ ਮੰਗਲ ਮਨੂਆ ਅਬ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਫੁਨਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਖਾਇ ॥੩॥
sehaj dhun gaavai mangal manooaa ab taa kau fun kaal na khaae |3|
My mind sings the celestial melody of bliss, and death shall no longer consume it. ||3||
ਕਰਨ ਕਾਰਨ ਸਮਰਥ ਹਮਾਰੇ ਸੁਖਦਾਈ ਮੇਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥
karan kaaran samarath hamaare sukhadaaee mere har har raae |
My Lord, the Cause of all causes, is All-powerful, the Giver of peace; He is my Lord, my Lord King.
ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਜਪਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਓਤਿ ਪੋਤਿ ਮੇਰੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਸਹਾਇ ॥੪॥੯॥
naam teraa jap jeevai naanak ot pot merai sang sahaae |4|9|
Nanak lives by chanting Your Name, O Lord; You are my helper, with me, through and through. ||4||9||
