ਜਬੈ ਜਸੋਦਾ ਸੁਇ ਗਈ ਮਾਯਾ ਕੀਯੋ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ ॥
jabai jasodaa sue gee maayaa keeyo prakaas |
ਡਾਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਸਨ ਤਿਹ ਪੈ ਸੁਤਾ ਲੀਨੀ ਹੈ ਕਰਿ ਤਾਸ ॥੬੮॥
ddaar krisan tih pai sutaa leenee hai kar taas |68|
On this side when Yashoda went to sleep and Yoga-maya (deceptive show) appeared in her womb putting Krishna by the side of Yashoda, Vasudev picked up her daughter and started backwards.68.

SWAYYA
ਮਾਯਾ ਕੋ ਲੈ ਕਰ ਮੈ ਬਸੁਦੇਵ ਸੁ ਸੀਘ੍ਰ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
maayaa ko lai kar mai basudev su seeghr chaliyo apune grih maahee |
Taking Maya in his hands, Vasudev quickly went to his house and
ਸੋਇ ਗਏ ਪਰ ਦੁਆਰ ਸਬੈ ਘਰ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਕੀ ਸੁਧਿ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
soe ge par duaar sabai ghar baahar bheetar kee sudh naahee |
At that time all the people were sleeping and none had the consciousness about the happenings inside and outside
ਦੇਵਕੀ ਤੀਰ ਗਯੋ ਜਬ ਹੀ ਸਭ ਤੇ ਮਿਲਗੇ ਪਟ ਆਪਸਿ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
devakee teer gayo jab hee sabh te milage patt aapas maahee |
When Vasudev came near Devaki, the doors closed themselves
ਬਾਲਿ ਉਠੀ ਜਬ ਰੋਦਨ ਕੈ ਜਗ ਕੈ ਸੁਧਿ ਜਾਇ ਕਰੀ ਨਰ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੬੯॥
baal utthee jab rodan kai jag kai sudh jaae karee nar naahee |69|
When the servants heard the cries of the female infant, they informed the king.69.
ਰੋਇ ਉਠੀ ਵਹ ਬਾਲਿ ਜਬੈ ਤਬ ਸ੍ਰੋਨਨ ਮੈ ਸੁਨਿ ਲੀ ਧੁਨਿ ਹੋਰੈ ॥
roe utthee veh baal jabai tab sronan mai sun lee dhun horai |
When that female infant wept, then all the people heard her cries,
ਧਾਇ ਗਏ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੰਸਹ ਕੇ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਜਨਮਿਯੋ ਰਿਪੁ ਤੋਰੈ ॥
dhaae ge nrip kansah ke ghar jaae kahiyo janamiyo rip torai |
The servants ran to inform the king, they told him that his enemy had taken birth
ਲੈ ਕੇ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ ਗਯੋ ਤਿਹ ਕੇ ਚਲਿ ਜਾਇ ਗਹੀ ਕਰ ਤੈ ਕਰਿ ਜੋਰੈ ॥
lai ke kripaan gayo tih ke chal jaae gahee kar tai kar jorai |
Holding fast his sword in both his hands Kansa went there
ਦੇਖਹੁ ਬਾਤ ਮਹਾ ਜੜ ਕੀ ਅਬ ਆਦਿਕ ਕੇ ਬਿਖ ਚਾਬਤ ਭੋਰੈ ॥੭੦॥
dekhahu baat mahaa jarr kee ab aadik ke bikh chaabat bhorai |70|
Look at the vicious action of this great fool, who himself is going to drink the poison i.e. he himself is preparing for his own death.70.
ਲਾਇ ਰਹੀ ਉਰ ਸੋ ਤਿਹ ਕੋ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਬਾਤ ਸੁਨੋ ਮਤਵਾਰੇ ॥
laae rahee ur so tih ko mukh te kahiyo baat suno matavaare |
Devaki had hugged the female infant to her bosom she said,
ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਹਨੇ ਮਮ ਪਾਵਕ ਸੇ ਛਠ ਹੀ ਤੁਮ ਪਾਥਰ ਪੈ ਹਨਿ ਡਾਰੇ ॥
putr hane mam paavak se chhatth hee tum paathar pai han ddaare |
“O fool! listen to me, you have already killed my radiant sons by dashing them against the stones”
ਛੀਨ ਕੈ ਕੰਸ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਇਹ ਭੀ ਪਟਕੇ ਇਹ ਕੈ ਅਬ ਨਾਰੇ ॥
chheen kai kans kahiyo mukh te ih bhee pattake ih kai ab naare |
Hearing these words Kansa immediately seized the infant and said, “Now, I shall also kill her by dashing her.”
ਦਾਮਿਨੀ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਲਹਕੀ ਨਭ ਮੈ ਜਬ ਰਾਖ ਲਈ ਵਹ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰੇ ॥੭੧॥
daaminee hvai lahakee nabh mai jab raakh lee veh raakhanahaare |71|
When Kansa did all that, then this infant, who was protected by the Lord, went as lightning in the sky and flased.71.

ਕੈ ਕੈ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਮਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਬ︀ਯੋਤ ਵਾ ਕੇ ਮਾਰਬੇ ਕੀ ਚਾਕਰਨ ਕਹਿਓ ਮਾਰ ਡਾਰੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਬਾਤ ਹੈ ॥
kai kai krodh man kar bayot vaa ke maarabe kee chaakaran kahio maar ddaaro nrip baat hai |
Kansa said to his servants in great fury and after great consideration, “I order you to kill her
ਕਰ ਮੋ ਉਠਾਇ ਕੈ ਬਨਾਇ ਭਾਰੇ ਪਾਥਰ ਪੈ ਰਾਜ ਕਾਜ ਰਾਖਬੇ ਕੋ ਕਛੁ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਤ ਹੈ ॥
kar mo utthaae kai banaae bhaare paathar pai raaj kaaj raakhabe ko kachh nahee paat hai |
” Holding her in dashed against a huge stone
ਆਪਨੋ ਸੋ ਬਲ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਇਹ ਭਲੀ ਭਾਤ ਸ੍ਵਛੰਦ ਬੰਦ ਕੈ ਕੈ ਛੂਟ ਇਹ ਜਾਤ ਹੈ ॥
aapano so bal kar raakhai ih bhalee bhaat svachhand band kai kai chhoott ih jaat hai |
But inspite of being held in such strong hands, she herself was slipping away and spattering
ਮਾਯਾ ਕੋ ਬਢਾਇ ਕੈ ਸੁ ਸਭਨ ਸੁਨਾਇ ਕੈ ਸੁ ਐਸੇ ਉਡੀ ਬਾਰਾ ਜੈਸੇ ਪਾਰਾ ਉਡਿ ਜਾਤ ਹੈ ॥੭੨॥
maayaa ko badtaae kai su sabhan sunaae kai su aise uddee baaraa jaise paaraa udd jaat hai |72|
Because of the impact of maya, she splashed like mercury, causing everyone to listen to her voice.72.

ਆਠ ਭੁਜਾ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਅਪਨੀ ਸਭਨੋ ਕਰ ਮੈ ਬਰ ਆਯੁਧ ਲੀਨੇ ॥
aatth bhujaa kar kai apanee sabhano kar mai bar aayudh leene |
This maya manifested herself assuming eight arms and holding her weapons in her hands
ਜਵਾਲ ਨਿਕਾਸ ਕਹੀ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਰਿਪੁ ਅਉਰ ਭਯੋ ਤੁਮਰੋ ਮਤਿ ਹੀਨੇ ॥
javaal nikaas kahee mukh te rip aaur bhayo tumaro mat heene |
The flames of fire were coming out of her mouth, she said, “O foolish Kansa! your enemy has taken birth at another place”
ਦਾਮਿਨਿ ਸੀ ਲਹਕੈ ਨਭਿ ਮੈ ਡਰ ਕੈ ਫਟਗੇ ਤਿਹ ਸਤ੍ਰਨ ਸੀਨੇ ॥
daamin see lahakai nabh mai ddar kai fattage tih satran seene |
Saying this much, and crating fear in the hearts of the enemies,
ਮਾਰ ਡਰੈ ਇਹ ਹੂੰ ਹਮ ਹੂੰ ਸਭ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਮਨੈ ਅਤਿ ਦੈਤਨ ਕੀਨੇ ॥੭੩॥
maar ddarai ih hoon ham hoon sabh traas manai at daitan keene |73|
She began to wave like lightning in the sky and all the demons became fearful thinking that she may kill all of them.73.

ਤੀਨਿ ਬਿਆਪਹਿ ਜਗਤ ਕਉ ਤੁਰੀਆ ਪਾਵੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
teen biaapeh jagat kau tureea paavai koe |
The world is in the grip of the three qualities; only a few attain the fourth state of absorption.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਤ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਭਏ ਜਿਨ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥
naanak sant niramal bhe jin man vasiaa soe |3|
O Nanak, the Saints are pure and immaculate; the Lord abides within their minds. ||3||

ਤ੍ਰਿਤੀਆ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਿਖੈ ਫਲ ਕਬ ਉਤਮ ਕਬ ਨੀਚੁ ॥
triteea trai gun bikhai fal kab utam kab neech |
The third day of the lunar cycle: Those who are bound by the three qualities gather poison as their fruit; now they are good, and now they are bad.
ਨਰਕ ਸੁਰਗ ਭ੍ਰਮਤਉ ਘਣੋ ਸਦਾ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ਮੀਚੁ ॥
narak surag bhramtau ghano sadaa sanghaarai meech |
They wander endlessly in heaven and hell, until death annihilates them.
ਹਰਖ ਸੋਗ ਸਹਸਾ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ਹਉ ਹਉ ਕਰਤ ਬਿਹਾਇ ॥
harakh sog sahasaa sansaar hau hau karat bihaae |
In pleasure and pain and worldly cynicism, they pass their lives acting in ego.
ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਏ ਤਿਸਹਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਨੀ ਚਿਤਵਹਿ ਅਨਿਕ ਉਪਾਇ ॥
jin kee tiseh na jaananee chitaveh anik upaae |
They do not know the One who created them; they think up all sorts of schemes and plans.
ਆਧਿ ਬਿਆਧਿ ਉਪਾਧਿ ਰਸ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਤੂਟੈ ਤਾਪ ॥
aadh biaadh upaadh ras kabahu na toottai taap |
Their minds and bodies are distracted by pleasure and pain, and their fever never departs.
ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਪੂਰਨ ਧਨੀ ਨਹ ਬੂਝੈ ਪਰਤਾਪ ॥
paarabraham pooran dhanee neh boojhai parataap |
They do not realize the glorious radiance of the Supreme Lord God, the Perfect Lord and Master.
ਮੋਹ ਭਰਮ ਬੂਡਤ ਘਣੋ ਮਹਾ ਨਰਕ ਮਹਿ ਵਾਸ ॥
moh bharam booddat ghano mahaa narak meh vaas |
So many are being drowned in emotional attachment and doubt; they dwell in the most horrible hell.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਰਾਖਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤੇਰੀ ਆਸ ॥੩॥
kar kirapaa prabh raakh lehu naanak teree aas |3|
Please bless me with Your Mercy, God, and save me! Nanak places his hopes in You. ||3||

ਚਤੁਰ ਸਿਆਣਾ ਸੁਘੜੁ ਸੋਇ ਜਿਨਿ ਤਜਿਆ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
chatur siaanaa sugharr soe jin tajiaa abhimaan |
One who renounces egotistical pride is intelligent, wise and refined.
ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਅਸਟ ਸਿਧਿ ਭਜੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥੪॥
chaar padaarath asatt sidh bhaj naanak har naam |4|
The four cardinal blessings, and the eight spiritual powers of the Siddhas are obtained, O Nanak, by meditating, vibrating on the Lord's Name. ||4||

ਚਤੁਰਥਿ ਚਾਰੇ ਬੇਦ ਸੁਣਿ ਸੋਧਿਓ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
chaturath chaare bed sun sodhio tat beechaar |
The fourth day of the lunar cycle: Listening to the four Vedas, and contemplating the essence of reality, I have come to realize
ਸਰਬ ਖੇਮ ਕਲਿਆਣ ਨਿਧਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਸਾਰੁ ॥
sarab khem kaliaan nidh raam naam jap saar |
that the treasure of all joy and comfort is found in sublime meditation on the Lord's Name.
ਨਰਕ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ਦੁਖ ਹਰੈ ਤੂਟਹਿ ਅਨਿਕ ਕਲੇਸ ॥
narak nivaarai dukh harai tootteh anik kales |
One is saved from hell, suffering is destroyed, countless pains depart,
ਮੀਚੁ ਹੁਟੈ ਜਮ ਤੇ ਛੁਟੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀਰਤਨ ਪਰਵੇਸ ॥
meech huttai jam te chhuttai har keeratan paraves |
death is overcome, and one escapes the Messenger of Death, by absorption in the Kirtan of the Lord's Praises.
ਭਉ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਰਸੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਤੇ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰ ॥
bhau binasai amrit rasai rang rate nirankaar |
Fear departs, and one savors the Ambrosial Nectar, imbued with the Love of the Formless Lord.
ਦੁਖ ਦਾਰਿਦ ਅਪਵਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਨਾਸਹਿ ਨਾਮ ਅਧਾਰ ॥
dukh daarid apavitrataa naaseh naam adhaar |
Pain, poverty and impurity are removed, with the Support of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ ਖੋਜਤੇ ਸੁਖ ਸਾਗਰ ਗੋਪਾਲ ॥
sur nar mun jan khojate sukh saagar gopaal |
The angels, the seers and the silent sages search for the Ocean of peace, the Sustainer of the world.
ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਮੁਖੁ ਊਜਲਾ ਹੋਇ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧ ਰਵਾਲ ॥੪॥
man niramal mukh aoojalaa hoe naanak saadh ravaal |4|
The mind becomes pure, and one's face is radiant, O Nanak, when one becomes the dust of the feet of the Holy. ||4||

The five evil passions dwell in the mind of one who is engrossed in Maya.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥੫॥
saadhasang hoe niramalaa naanak prabh kai rang |5|
In the Saadh Sangat, one becomes pure, O Nanak, imbued with the Love of God. ||5||

ਪੰਚਮਿ ਪੰਚ ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਤੇ ਜਿਹ ਜਾਨਿਓ ਪਰਪੰਚੁ ॥
pancham panch pradhaan te jih jaanio parapanch |
The fifth day of the lunar cycle: They are the self-elect, the most distinguished, who know the true nature of the world.
ਕੁਸਮ ਬਾਸ ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗੁ ਘਣੋ ਸਭ ਮਿਥਿਆ ਬਲਬੰਚੁ ॥
kusam baas bahu rang ghano sabh mithiaa balabanch |
The many colors and scents of flowers - all worldly deceptions are transitory and false.
ਨਹ ਜਾਪੈ ਨਹ ਬੂਝੀਐ ਨਹ ਕਛੁ ਕਰਤ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
neh jaapai neh boojheeai neh kachh karat beechaar |
People do not see, and they do not understand; they do not reflect upon anything.
ਸੁਆਦ ਮੋਹ ਰਸ ਬੇਧਿਓ ਅਗਿਆਨਿ ਰਚਿਓ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
suaad moh ras bedhio agiaan rachio sansaar |
The world is pierced through with attachment to tastes and pleasures, engrossed in ignorance.
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਣ ਬਹੁ ਜੋਨਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਣ ਕੀਨੇ ਕਰਮ ਅਨੇਕ ॥
janam maran bahu jon bhraman keene karam anek |
Those who perform empty religious rituals will be born, only to die again. They wander through endless incarnations.
ਰਚਨਹਾਰੁ ਨਹ ਸਿਮਰਿਓ ਮਨਿ ਨ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਬਿਬੇਕ ॥
rachanahaar neh simario man na beechaar bibek |
They do not meditate in remembrance on the Creator Lord; their minds do not understand.
ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਭਗਵਾਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਲਿਪਤ ਨ ਰੰਚ ॥
bhaau bhagat bhagavaan sang maaeaa lipat na ranch |
By loving devotion to the Lord God, you shall not be polluted by Maya at all.
ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਰਲੇ ਪਾਈਅਹਿ ਜੋ ਨ ਰਚਹਿ ਪਰਪੰਚ ॥੫॥
naanak birale paaeeeh jo na racheh parapanch |5|
O Nanak, how rare are those, who are not engrossed in worldly entanglements. ||5||

ਖਟ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਊਚੌ ਕਹਹਿ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਰਾਵਾਰ ॥
khatt saasatr aoochau kaheh ant na paaraavaar |
The six Shaastras proclaim Him to be the greatest; He has no end or limitation.
ਭਗਤ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਤੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਦੁਆਰ ॥੬॥
bhagat soheh gun gaavate naanak prabh kai duaar |6|
The devotees look beauteous, O Nanak, when they sing the Glories of God at His Door. ||6||

ਖਸਟਮਿ ਖਟ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਕਹਹਿ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਕਥਹਿ ਅਨੇਕ ॥
khasattam khatt saasatr kaheh sinmrit katheh anek |
The sixth day of the lunar cycle: The six Shaastras say, and countless Simritees assert,
ਊਤਮੁ ਊਚੌ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਗੁਣ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣਹਿ ਸੇਖ ॥
aootam aoochau paarabraham gun ant na jaaneh sekh |
that the Supreme Lord God is the most sublime and lofty. Even the thousand-tongued serpent does not know the limits of His Glories.
ਨਾਰਦ ਮੁਨਿ ਜਨ ਸੁਕ ਬਿਆਸ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵਤ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ॥
naarad mun jan suk biaas jas gaavat gobind |
Naarad, the humble beings, Suk and Vyaasa sing the Praises of the Lord of the Universe.
ਰਸ ਗੀਧੇ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਬੀਧੇ ਭਗਤ ਰਚੇ ਭਗਵੰਤ ॥
ras geedhe har siau beedhe bhagat rache bhagavant |
They are imbued with the Lord's essence; united with Him; they are absorbed in devotional worship of the Lord God.
ਮੋਹ ਮਾਨ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਬਿਨਸਿਓ ਪਾਈ ਸਰਨਿ ਦਇਆਲ ॥
moh maan bhram binasio paaee saran deaal |
Emotional attachment, pride and doubt are eliminated, when one takes to the Sanctuary of the Merciful Lord.
ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਬਸੇ ਦਰਸਨੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥
charan kamal man tan base darasan dekh nihaal |
His Lotus Feet abide within my mind and body and I am enraptured, beholding the Blessed Vision of His Darshan.
ਲਾਭੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਤੋਟਾ ਹਿਰੈ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥
laabh milai tottaa hirai saadhasang liv laae |
People reap their profits, and suffer no loss, when they embrace love for the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਖਾਟਿ ਖਜਾਨਾ ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਿ ਹਰੇ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇ ॥੬॥
khaatt khajaanaa gun nidh hare naanak naam dhiaae |6|
They gather in the treasure of the Lord, the Ocean of Excellence, O Nanak, by meditating on the Naam. ||6||
