ਲੈ ਕਰਿ ਤਾਤ ਕੋ ਤਾਤ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਜਬ ਹੀ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੈ ਦਰ ਊਪਰ ਆਇਓ ॥
lai kar taat ko taat chaliyo jab hee nrip kai dar aoopar aaeo |
ਜਾਇ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਦਰਵਾਨਨ ਸੋ ਤਿਨ ਬੋਲਿ ਕੈ ਭੀਤਰ ਜਾਇ ਜਨਾਇਓ ॥
jaae kahiyo daravaanan so tin bol kai bheetar jaae janaaeo |
When the father reached the gate of the palace, he asked the gatekeeper to inform Kansa about it
ਕੰਸ ਕਰੀ ਕਰੁਨਾ ਸਿਸੁ ਦੇਖਿ ਕਹਿਓ ਹਮ ਹੂੰ ਤੁਮ ਕੋ ਬਖਸਾਇਓ ॥

ਫੇਰ ਚਲਿਓ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਕੋ ਬਸੁਦੇਵ ਤਊ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਕਛੁ ਨ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਓ ॥੪੬॥

Seeing the baby and taking pity Kansa said, “I have forgiven you.” Vasudev started back to his house, but there was no cheerfulness in his mind.46.

Vasudev thought in his mind that Kansa was a man of vicious intellect, with fear, he will definitely kill the infant.47.

Then the sage Narada came to Kansa and drawing eight lines before him, he told him some mysterious things.48.

ਬਾਤ ਸੁਨੀ ਜਬ ਨਾਰਦ ਕੀ ਇਹ ਤੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਭਈ ਹੈ ॥
baat sunee jab naarad kee ih to nrip ke man maeh bhee hai |
ਮਾਰਹੁ ਜਾਇ ਇਸੈ ਅਬ ਹੀ ਕਰਿ ਭ੍ਰਿਤਨ ਨੈਨ ਕੀ ਸੈਨ ਦਈ ਹੈ ॥
maarahu jaae isai ab hee kar bhritan nain kee sain dee hai |
When the king listened to the speech of Narada, it went deeper into his mind he told his servants with signs to kill the infant immediately
ਦਉਰਿ ਗਏ ਤਿਹ ਆਇਸੁ ਮਾਨ ਕੈ ਬਾਤ ਇਹੈ ਚਲਿ ਲੋਗ ਗਈ ਹੈ ॥

ਪਾਥਰ ਪੈ ਹਨਿ ਕੈ ਘਨ ਜਿਉ ਬਪੁ ਜੀਵਹਿ ਤੇ ਕਰਿ ਭਿੰਨ ਲਈ ਹੈ ॥੪੯॥

Receiving his order all (the servants) ran away and they dashed the baby against a store like a hammer, separated the soul from the body.49.

ਸੇਵਕ ਭੇਜ ਦਏ ਤਿਨ ਲਿਆਇ ਕੈ ਪਾਥਰ ਪੈ ਹਨਿ ਕੈ ਫੁਨਿ ਦੀਨੋ ॥

Another son who was born to Devaki and Vasudev, who was also killed on the orders of Kans of vicious intellenct, by his servants by dashing him on the store the dead body was given back to the parents
ਸੋਰ ਪਰਿਯੋ ਸਬ ਹੀ ਪੁਰ ਮੈ ਕਬਿ ਨੈ ਤਿਹ ਕੋ ਜਸੁ ਇਉ ਲਖਿ ਲੀਨੋ ॥

ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਮੂਓ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਰਨ ਮੈ ਮਿਲ ਕੈ ਸੁਰ ਮੰਡਲ ਰੋਦਨ ਕੀਨੋ ॥੫੦॥

Hearing about this heinous crime, there was great uproar in the whole city and this tumult appeared to the poet like the cries of gods on the death of Indra.50.
ਅਉਰ ਭਯੋ ਸੁਤ ਜੋ ਤਿਹ ਕੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਨਾਮ ਧਰਿਓ ਤਿਹ ਕੋ ਤਿਨ ਹੂੰ ਜੈ ॥

ਮਾਰ ਦਯੋ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੰਸ ਸੁ ਪਾਥਰ ਪੈ ਹਨਿ ਡਾਰਿਓ ਖੂੰਜੈ ॥

Another son was born in their house who was named Jaya, but he was also dashed against the stone by the king Kansa
ਸੀਸ ਕੇ ਬਾਰ ਉਖਾਰਤ ਦੇਵਕੀ ਰੋਦਨ ਚੋਰਨ ਤੈ ਘਰਿ ਗੂੰਜੈ ॥

ਜਿਉ ਰੁਤਿ ਅੰਤੁ ਬਸੰਤ ਸਮੈ ਨਭਿ ਕੋ ਜਿਮ ਜਾਤ ਪੁਕਾਰਤ ਕੂੰਜੈ ॥੫੧॥

Devaki began to pull out the hair of her head and began to cry like the bird called Karauncha in the sky in the spring season.51.

ਚਉਥੋ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਭਇਓ ਸੋ ਭੀ ਕੰਸ ਮਾਰ ਦਇਓ ਤਿਹ ਸੋਕ ਬੜਵਾ ਕੀ ਲਾਟੈ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਜਗਤ ਹੈ ॥

The fourth son was born and he was also killed by Kansa the flames of sorrow blazed in the hearts of Devaki and Vasudev
ਪਰੀ ਹੈਗੀ ਦਾਸੀ ਮਹਾ ਮੋਹ ਹੂੰ ਕੀ ਫਾਸੀ ਬੀਚ ਗਈ ਮਿਟ ਸੋਭਾ ਪੈ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਹੀ ਪਗਤ ਹੈ ॥
paree haigee daasee mahaa moh hoon kee faasee beech gee mitt sobhaa pai udaasee hee pagat hai |
All the beauty of Devaki was finished by the noose of great attachment around her neck and she was drowned in great anguish
ਕੈਧੋ ਤੁਮ ਨਾਥ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਸਨਾਥ ਹਮ ਹੂੰ ਪੈ ਹੂੰਜੈ ਪਤਿ ਕੀ ਨ ਗਤਿ ਔਰ ਤਨ ਕੀ ਨ ਗਤਿ ਹੈ ॥
kaidho tum naath hvai sanaath ham hoon pai hoonjai pat kee na gat aauar tan kee na gat hai |
She says, “O my God! what type of Lord Thou art and what type of protected people we are? We have neither received any honour nor have got any physical protection
ਭਈ ਉਪਹਾਸੀ ਦੇਹ ਪੂਤਨ ਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਤੇਰੀ ਹਾਸੀ ਨ ਹਮੈ ਗਾਸੀ ਸੀ ਲਗਤ ਹੈ ॥੫੨॥
bhee upahaasee deh pootan binaasee abinaasee teree haasee na hamai gaasee see lagat hai |52|
Because of the death of our son, we are also being ridiculed, O Immortal Lord! such a cruel joke by you is sharply stinging us like an arrow.”52.

ਪਾਚਵੋ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਭਯੋ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੰਸ ਸੁ ਪਾਥਰ ਸੋ ਹਨਿ ਮਾਰਿ ਦਯੋ ਹੈ ॥

ਸ੍ਵਾਸ ਗਯੋ ਨਭਿ ਕੇ ਮਗ ਮੈ ਤਨ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਕਿਧੌ ਜਮੁਨਾ ਮੈ ਗਯੋ ਹੈ ॥
svaas gayo nabh ke mag mai tan taa ko kidhau jamunaa mai gayo hai |
Hearing about the birth of fifth son, Kansa also killed him by dashing him against the store the soul of the infant went to heaven and his body was merged in the flowing current
ਸੋ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਪੁਨਿ ਸ੍ਰੋਨਨ ਦੇਵਕੀ ਸੋਕ ਸੋ ਸਾਸ ਉਸਾਸ ਲਯੋ ਹੈ ॥
so sun kai pun sronan devakee sok so saas usaas layo hai |
ਮੋਹ ਭਯੋ ਅਤਿ ਤਾ ਦਿਨ ਮੈ ਮਨੋ ਯਾਹੀ ਤੇ ਮੋਹ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ ਭਯੋ ਹੈ ॥੫੩॥

Hearing this, Devaki began to sigh and because of the attachment she experienced such a great anguish that she appeared to have given birth to the attachment itself.53.

ਕੀਜੀਐ ਅਨਾਥ ਨ ਸਨਾਥ ਮੇਰੇ ਦੀਨਾਨਾਥ ਹਮੈ ਮਾਰ ਦੀਜੀਐ ਕਿ ਯਾ ਕੋ ਮਾਰ ਦੀਜੀਐ ॥
keejeeai anaath na sanaath mere deenaanaath hamai maar deejeeai ki yaa ko maar deejeeai |
When the sixth son was also killed by Kansa, Devaki prayed thus to God, “O Master of the lowly! either kill us or kill Kansa
ਕੰਸ ਬਡੋ ਪਾਪੀ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਲੋਭ ਭਯੋ ਜਾਪੀ ਸੋਈ ਕੀਜੀਐ ਹਮਾਰੀ ਦਸਾ ਜਾ ਤੇ ਸੁਖੀ ਜੀਜੀਐ ॥

jo balabhadr bhayo garabhaatar tau duhan baitth kai mantr kario hai |
ਤਾ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਕੇ ਜੋਰ ਸੋ ਕਾਢਿ ਕੈ ਰੋਹਿਨੀ ਕੇ ਉਰ ਬੀਚ ਧਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥
taa hee te mantr ke jor so kaadt kai rohinee ke ur beech dhario hai |
When balbhadra was conceived, Devaki and Vasudev sat to hold consultations and with the power of mantras, he was transferred from the womb of Devaki to the womb of Rohini
ਕੰਸ ਕਦਾਚ ਹਨੇ ਸਿਸੁ ਕੋ ਤਿਹ ਤੇ ਮਨ ਮੈ ਬਸੁਦੇਵ ਡਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥

ਸੇਖ ਮਨੋ ਜਗ ਦੇਖਨ ਕੋ ਜਗ ਭੀਤਰ ਰੂਪ ਨਵੀਨ ਕਰਿਓ ਹੈ ॥੫੫॥
sekh mano jag dekhan ko jag bheetar roop naveen kario hai |55|
Thinking that Kansa may also kill him, Vasudev was frightened. It seemed that Sheshanaga had assumed a new form in order to see the world.55.

and the anxiety within your mind shall depart.
ਆਸ ਅਨਿਤ ਤਿਆਗਹੁ ਤਰੰਗ ॥

Abandon the waves of fleeting desire,
ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਧੂਰਿ ਮਨ ਮੰਗ ॥
sant janaa kee dhoor man mang |
and pray for the dust of the feet of the Saints.
ਆਪੁ ਛੋਡਿ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕਰਹੁ ॥
aap chhodd benatee karahu |
Renounce your selfishness and conceit and offer your prayers.
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਤਰਹੁ ॥
saadhasang agan saagar tarahu |
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, cross over the ocean of fire.
ਹਰਿ ਧਨ ਕੇ ਭਰਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਭੰਡਾਰ ॥
har dhan ke bhar lehu bhanddaar |
Fill your stores with the wealth of the Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਨਮਸਕਾਰ ॥੧॥

Focus your consciousness on the One, the All-pervading Lord
ਏਕ ਰੂਪ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਰੰਗ ਅਨੇਕ ॥

He has One Form, but He has many manifestations.

Sustainer of the Universe, Lord of the world, Kind to the poor,
ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨ ਪੂਰਨ ਕਿਰਪਾਲ ॥

Destroyer of sorrow, perfectly Merciful.
ਸਿਮਰਿ ਸਿਮਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਾਰੰ ਬਾਰ ॥

Meditate, meditate in remembrance on the Naam, again and again.

sunat kamaavat hot udhaar |
One who listens and acts on them is saved.
ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਲੋਕਹ ਨਿਸਤਾਰ ॥
aap tarai lokah nisataar |
He himself swims across, and saves others as well.
ਸਫਲ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਸਫਲੁ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਸੰਗੁ ॥
safal jeevan safal taa kaa sang |
His life is prosperous, and his company is fruitful;
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਲਾਗਾ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗੁ ॥
jaa kai man laagaa har rang |
his mind is imbued with the love of the Lord.
ਜੈ ਜੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਅਨਾਹਦੁ ਵਾਜੈ ॥
jai jai sabad anaahad vaajai |
Hail, hail to him, for whom the sound current of the Shabad vibrates.
ਸੁਨਿ ਸੁਨਿ ਅਨਦ ਕਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਗਾਜੈ ॥
sun sun anad kare prabh gaajai |
Hearing it again and again, he is in bliss, proclaiming God's Praises.
ਪ੍ਰਗਟੇ ਗੁਪਾਲ ਮਹਾਂਤ ਕੈ ਮਾਥੇ ॥
pragatte gupaal mahaant kai maathe |
The Lord radiates from the foreheads of the Holy.
ਨਾਨਕ ਉਧਰੇ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਸਾਥੇ ॥੩॥
naanak udhare tin kai saathe |3|
Nanak is saved in their company. ||3||
ਸਰਨਿ ਜੋਗੁ ਸੁਨਿ ਸਰਨੀ ਆਏ ॥

Hearing that He can give Sanctuary, I have come seeking His Sanctuary.

Bestowing His Mercy, God has blended me with Himself.
ਮਿਟਿ ਗਏ ਬੈਰ ਭਏ ਸਭ ਰੇਨ ॥

Hatred is gone, and I have become the dust of all.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਲੈਨ ॥
amrit naam saadhasang lain |
I have received the Ambrosial Naam in the Company of the Holy.
ਸੁਪ੍ਰਸੰਨ ਭਏ ਗੁਰਦੇਵ ॥
suprasan bhe guradev |
The Divine Guru is perfectly pleased;
ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਈ ਸੇਵਕ ਕੀ ਸੇਵ ॥
pooran hoee sevak kee sev |
the service of His servant has been rewarded.
ਆਲ ਜੰਜਾਲ ਬਿਕਾਰ ਤੇ ਰਹਤੇ ॥
aal janjaal bikaar te rahate |
I have been released from worldly entanglements and corruption,
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਨਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਕਹਤੇ ॥
raam naam sun rasanaa kahate |
hearing the Lord's Name and chanting it with my tongue.
ਕਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦੁ ਦਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
kar prasaad deaa prabh dhaaree |
By His Grace, God has bestowed His Mercy.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਿਬਹੀ ਖੇਪ ਹਮਾਰੀ ॥੪॥
naanak nibahee khep hamaaree |4|
O Nanak, my merchandise has arrived save and sound. ||4||
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਉਸਤਤਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਸੰਤ ਮੀਤ ॥
prabh kee usatat karahu sant meet |
Sing the Praises of God, O Saints, O friends,
ਸਾਵਧਾਨ ਏਕਾਗਰ ਚੀਤ ॥
saavadhaan ekaagar cheet |
with total concentration and one-pointedness of mind.
ਸੁਖਮਨੀ ਸਹਜ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਗੁਨ ਨਾਮ ॥
sukhamanee sehaj gobind gun naam |
Sukhmani is the peaceful ease, the Glory of God, the Naam.
ਜਿਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਬਸੈ ਸੁ ਹੋਤ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥
jis man basai su hot nidhaan |
When it abides in the mind, one becomes wealthy.
ਸਰਬ ਇਛਾ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਇ ॥
sarab ichhaa taa kee pooran hoe |
All desires are fulfilled.
ਪ੍ਰਧਾਨ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੁ ਸਭ ਲੋਇ ॥
pradhaan purakh pragatt sabh loe |
One becomes the most respected person, famous all over the world.
ਸਭ ਤੇ ਊਚ ਪਾਏ ਅਸਥਾਨੁ ॥
sabh te aooch paae asathaan |
He obtains the highest place of all.
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਆਵਨ ਜਾਨੁ ॥
bahur na hovai aavan jaan |
He does not come and go in reincarnation any longer.
ਹਰਿ ਧਨੁ ਖਾਟਿ ਚਲੈ ਜਨੁ ਸੋਇ ॥
har dhan khaatt chalai jan soe |
One who departs, after earning the wealth of the Lord's Name,
ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸਹਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥੫॥
naanak jiseh paraapat hoe |5|
O Nanak, realizes it. ||5||
ਖੇਮ ਸਾਂਤਿ ਰਿਧਿ ਨਵ ਨਿਧਿ ॥
khem saant ridh nav nidh |
Comfort, peace and tranquility, wealth and the nine treasures;
ਬੁਧਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸਰਬ ਤਹ ਸਿਧਿ ॥
budh giaan sarab teh sidh |
wisdom, knowledge, and all spiritual powers;
ਬਿਦਿਆ ਤਪੁ ਜੋਗੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥
bidiaa tap jog prabh dhiaan |
learning, penance, Yoga and meditation on God;
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਸ੍ਰੇਸਟ ਊਤਮ ਇਸਨਾਨੁ ॥
giaan sresatt aootam isanaan |
The most sublime wisdom and purifying baths;
ਚਾਰਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਕਮਲ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸ ॥
chaar padaarath kamal pragaas |
the four cardinal blessings, the opening of the heart-lotus;
ਸਭ ਕੈ ਮਧਿ ਸਗਲ ਤੇ ਉਦਾਸ ॥
sabh kai madh sagal te udaas |
in the midst of all, and yet detached from all;
ਸੁੰਦਰੁ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਤਤ ਕਾ ਬੇਤਾ ॥
sundar chatur tat kaa betaa |
beauty, intelligence, and the realization of reality;
ਸਮਦਰਸੀ ਏਕ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟੇਤਾ ॥
samadarasee ek drisattetaa |
to look impartially upon all, and to see only the One
ਇਹ ਫਲ ਤਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਕੈ ਮੁਖਿ ਭਨੇ ॥
eih fal tis jan kai mukh bhane |
- these blessings come to one who,
ਗੁਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਬਚਨ ਮਨਿ ਸੁਨੇ ॥੬॥
gur naanak naam bachan man sune |6|
through Guru Nanak, chants the Naam with his mouth, and hears the Word with his ears. ||6||
