When the arrows struck, then all ran away the generals were killed and the warriors ran hither and thither.743.

ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧ ਰੋਵੈਂ ॥

Leaving their horses, they ran towards Ram and lamenting in various ways, they had no courage to come face to face.744.

(The soldiers said to Ram :) “Lava, killing the enemies, has defeated your army
ਦ੍ਵੈ ਸਿਸ ਜੀਤੇ ॥

ਨਹ ਭਯ ਭੀਤੇ ॥੭੪੫॥

Those two boys are fearlessly waging the war and have gained victory,”745.

Ram asked Lakshman to take a huge army and sent him
ਜਿਨ ਸਿਸ ਮਾਰੂ ॥

He said to him, “Do not kill those boys, but catch hold of them and show them to me.”746.

Hearing the words of Raghuvir, Lakshman started, decorating his forces and sharing the waters and the planes.747.

The sky was filled with dust because of the movement of army, all the soldiers rushed forth from all the four directions and began to remember the name of the Lord.748.

The staggering soldiers began to shower arrows, the banners waved and the arms fought with one another.749.

Coming near smilingly they shouted loudly, “O boys! forsake your persistence quickly.”750.

ਅਪਨੋ ਭਰ ਬਲ ਜੁਧ ਕਰ ਅਬ ਹੀ ਸੰਕ ਬਿਸਾਰ ॥੭੫੧॥

The boys said, “O Lakshman! we shall not unfasten the horse, abandoning all your doubts you come forward to fight with all your might.”751.

Catching hold of his very huge bow Lakshman thundering like clouds, showered a volley of arrows.752.

ਇਤ ਸਰ ਛੋਰੇ ॥

From the other side the gods are seeing the war and the sound of “Bravo, Bravo” is being heard. On this side the arrows are being discharged and bits of flesh are being chopped.753.

The warriors are thundering, the drums are resounding, the arrows are being discharge, but still they are not retreating from the war-arena.754.
ਲਛਮਨ ਬਾਚ ਸਿਸ ਸੋ ॥

The speech of Lakshman addressed to the boys :
ਕਬਹੂ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਇਹੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
kabahoo saadhasangat ihu paavai |
Sometimes, this being attains the Company of the Holy.
ਉਸੁ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਤੇ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
aus asathaan te bahur na aavai |
From that place, he does not have to come back again.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹੋਇ ਗਿਆਨ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥
antar hoe giaan paragaas |
The light of spiritual wisdom dawns within.
ਉਸੁ ਅਸਥਾਨ ਕਾ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਨਾਸੁ ॥
aus asathaan kaa nahee binaas |
That place does not perish.
ਮਨ ਤਨ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਇਕ ਰੰਗਿ ॥
man tan naam rate ik rang |
The mind and body are imbued with the Love of the Naam, the Name of the One Lord.
ਸਦਾ ਬਸਹਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥
sadaa baseh paarabraham kai sang |
He dwells forever with the Supreme Lord God.
ਜਿਉ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਜਲੁ ਆਇ ਖਟਾਨਾ ॥
jiau jal meh jal aae khattaanaa |
As water comes to blend with water,
ਤਿਉ ਜੋਤੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਨਾ ॥
tiau jotee sang jot samaanaa |
his light blends into the Light.
ਮਿਟਿ ਗਏ ਗਵਨ ਪਾਏ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮ ॥
mitt ge gavan paae bisraam |
Reincarnation is ended, and eternal peace is found.
ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੈ ਸਦ ਕੁਰਬਾਨ ॥੮॥੧੧॥
naanak prabh kai sad kurabaan |8|11|
Nanak is forever a sacrifice to God. ||8||11||

ਸੁਖੀ ਬਸੈ ਮਸਕੀਨੀਆ ਆਪੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਤਲੇ ॥

The humble beings abide in peace; subduing egotism, they are meek.
ਬਡੇ ਬਡੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਗਰਬਿ ਗਲੇ ॥੧॥
badde badde ahankaareea naanak garab gale |1|
The very proud and arrogant persons, O Nanak, are consumed by their own pride. ||1||
ਅਸਟਪਦੀ ॥

Ashtapadee:
ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਰਾਜ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
jis kai antar raaj abhimaan |
One who has the pride of power within,
ਸੋ ਨਰਕਪਾਤੀ ਹੋਵਤ ਸੁਆਨੁ ॥
so narakapaatee hovat suaan |
shall dwell in hell, and become a dog.
ਜੋ ਜਾਨੈ ਮੈ ਜੋਬਨਵੰਤੁ ॥
jo jaanai mai jobanavant |
One who deems himself to have the beauty of youth,
ਸੋ ਹੋਵਤ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕਾ ਜੰਤੁ ॥
so hovat bisattaa kaa jant |
shall become a maggot in manure.
ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਕਰਮਵੰਤੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
aapas kau karamavant kahaavai |
One who claims to act virtuously,
ਜਨਮਿ ਮਰੈ ਬਹੁ ਜੋਨਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਾਵੈ ॥
janam marai bahu jon bhramaavai |
shall live and die, wandering through countless reincarnations.
ਧਨ ਭੂਮਿ ਕਾ ਜੋ ਕਰੈ ਗੁਮਾਨੁ ॥
dhan bhoom kaa jo karai gumaan |
One who takes pride in wealth and lands
ਸੋ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਅੰਧਾ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ॥
so moorakh andhaa agiaan |
is a fool, blind and ignorant.
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਗਰੀਬੀ ਬਸਾਵੈ ॥
kar kirapaa jis kai hiradai gareebee basaavai |
One whose heart is mercifully blessed with abiding humility,
ਨਾਨਕ ਈਹਾ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਆਗੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
naanak eehaa mukat aagai sukh paavai |1|
O Nanak, is liberated here, and obtains peace hereafter. ||1||
ਧਨਵੰਤਾ ਹੋਇ ਕਰਿ ਗਰਬਾਵੈ ॥
dhanavantaa hoe kar garabaavai |
One who becomes wealthy and takes pride in it
ਤ੍ਰਿਣ ਸਮਾਨਿ ਕਛੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ॥
trin samaan kachh sang na jaavai |
not even a piece of straw shall go along with him.
ਬਹੁ ਲਸਕਰ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਊਪਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਆਸ ॥
bahu lasakar maanukh aoopar kare aas |
He may place his hopes on a large army of men,
ਪਲ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਤਾ ਕਾ ਹੋਇ ਬਿਨਾਸ ॥
pal bheetar taa kaa hoe binaas |
but he shall vanish in an instant.
ਸਭ ਤੇ ਆਪ ਜਾਨੈ ਬਲਵੰਤੁ ॥
sabh te aap jaanai balavant |
One who deems himself to be the strongest of all,
ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਇ ਭਸਮੰਤੁ ॥
khin meh hoe jaae bhasamant |
in an instant, shall be reduced to ashes.
ਕਿਸੈ ਨ ਬਦੈ ਆਪਿ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
kisai na badai aap ahankaaree |
One who thinks of no one else except his own prideful self
ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰੀ ॥
dharam raae tis kare khuaaree |
the Righteous Judge of Dharma shall expose his disgrace.
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮਿਟੈ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੁ ॥
gur prasaad jaa kaa mittai abhimaan |
One who, by Guru's Grace, eliminates his ego,
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਰਵਾਨੁ ॥੨॥
so jan naanak daragah paravaan |2|
O Nanak, becomes acceptable in the Court of the Lord. ||2||
ਕੋਟਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੈ ਹਉ ਧਾਰੇ ॥
kott karam karai hau dhaare |
If someone does millions of good deeds, while acting in ego,
ਸ੍ਰਮੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਬਿਰਥਾਰੇ ॥
sram paavai sagale birathaare |
he shall incur only trouble; all this is in vain.
ਅਨਿਕ ਤਪਸਿਆ ਕਰੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ॥
anik tapasiaa kare ahankaar |
If someone performs great penance, while acting in selfishness and conceit,
ਨਰਕ ਸੁਰਗ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥
narak surag fir fir avataar |
he shall be reincarnated into heaven and hell, over and over again.
ਅਨਿਕ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਿ ਆਤਮ ਨਹੀ ਦ੍ਰਵੈ ॥
anik jatan kar aatam nahee dravai |
He makes all sorts of efforts, but his soul is still not softened
ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਕਹੁ ਕੈਸੇ ਗਵੈ ॥
har daragah kahu kaise gavai |
how can he go to the Court of the Lord?
ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਜੋ ਭਲਾ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
aapas kau jo bhalaa kahaavai |
One who calls himself good
ਤਿਸਹਿ ਭਲਾਈ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
tiseh bhalaaee nikatt na aavai |
goodness shall not draw near him.
ਸਰਬ ਕੀ ਰੇਨ ਜਾ ਕਾ ਮਨੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
sarab kee ren jaa kaa man hoe |
One whose mind is the dust of all
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੋਇ ॥੩॥
kahu naanak taa kee niramal soe |3|
- says Nanak, his reputation is spotlessly pure. ||3||
ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਮੁਝ ਤੇ ਕਛੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
jab lag jaanai mujh te kachh hoe |
As long as someone thinks that he is the one who acts,
ਤਬ ਇਸ ਕਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋਇ ॥
tab is kau sukh naahee koe |
he shall have no peace.
ਜਬ ਇਹ ਜਾਨੈ ਮੈ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਤਾ ॥
jab ih jaanai mai kichh karataa |
As long as this mortal thinks that he is the one who does things,
ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਗਰਭ ਜੋਨਿ ਮਹਿ ਫਿਰਤਾ ॥
tab lag garabh jon meh firataa |
he shall wander in reincarnation through the womb.
ਜਬ ਧਾਰੈ ਕੋਊ ਬੈਰੀ ਮੀਤੁ ॥
jab dhaarai koaoo bairee meet |
As long as he considers one an enemy, and another a friend,
ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਚੀਤੁ ॥
tab lag nihachal naahee cheet |
his mind shall not come to rest.
ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਮੋਹ ਮਗਨ ਸੰਗਿ ਮਾਇ ॥
jab lag moh magan sang maae |
As long as he is intoxicated with attachment to Maya,
ਤਬ ਲਗੁ ਧਰਮ ਰਾਇ ਦੇਇ ਸਜਾਇ ॥
tab lag dharam raae dee sajaae |
the Righteous Judge shall punish him.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਤੂਟੈ ॥
prabh kirapaa te bandhan toottai |
By God's Grace, his bonds are shattered;
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉ ਛੂਟੈ ॥੪॥
gur prasaad naanak hau chhoottai |4|
by Guru's Grace, O Nanak, his ego is eliminated. ||4||
ਸਹਸ ਖਟੇ ਲਖ ਕਉ ਉਠਿ ਧਾਵੈ ॥
sehas khatte lakh kau utth dhaavai |
Earning a thousand, he runs after a hundred thousand.
ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਪਾਛੈ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
tripat na aavai maaeaa paachhai paavai |
Satisfaction is not obtained by chasing after Maya.
ਅਨਿਕ ਭੋਗ ਬਿਖਿਆ ਕੇ ਕਰੈ ॥
anik bhog bikhiaa ke karai |
He may enjoy all sorts of corrupt pleasures,
ਨਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵੈ ਖਪਿ ਖਪਿ ਮਰੈ ॥
neh tripataavai khap khap marai |
but he is still not satisfied; he indulges again and again, wearing himself out, until he dies.
ਬਿਨਾ ਸੰਤੋਖ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਊ ਰਾਜੈ ॥
binaa santokh nahee koaoo raajai |
Without contentment, no one is satisfied.
ਸੁਪਨ ਮਨੋਰਥ ਬ੍ਰਿਥੇ ਸਭ ਕਾਜੈ ॥
supan manorath brithe sabh kaajai |
Like the objects in a dream, all his efforts are in vain.
ਨਾਮ ਰੰਗਿ ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
naam rang sarab sukh hoe |
Through the love of the Naam, all peace is obtained.
ਬਡਭਾਗੀ ਕਿਸੈ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਇ ॥
baddabhaagee kisai paraapat hoe |
Only a few obtain this, by great good fortune.
ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨ ਆਪੇ ਆਪਿ ॥
karan karaavan aape aap |
He Himself is Himself the Cause of causes.
ਸਦਾ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਜਾਪਿ ॥੫॥
sadaa sadaa naanak har jaap |5|
Forever and ever, O Nanak, chant the Lord's Name. ||5||
