ਝਲ ਹਲੰਤ ਤਰਵਾਰ ਬਜਤ ਬਾਜੰਤ੍ਰ ਮਹਾ ਧੁਨ ॥
jhal halant taravaar bajat baajantr mahaa dhun |
The sound of musical instruments and the striking sound of the swords resounded,
ਖੜ ਹੜੰਤ ਖਹ ਖੋਲ ਧਯਾਨ ਤਜਿ ਪਰਤ ਚਵਧ ਮੁਨ ॥
kharr harrant kheh khol dhayaan taj parat chavadh mun |
And the meditation of the ascetics was distracted by the horrible voices of the battlefield.
ਇਕ ਇਕ ਲੈ ਚਲੈ ਇਕ ਤਨ ਇਕ ਅਰੁਝੈ ॥
eik ik lai chalai ik tan ik arujhai |
The warriors came forward after one another and began to fight one to one.
ਅੰਧ ਧੁੰਧ ਪਰ ਗਈ ਹਥਿ ਅਰ ਮੁਖ ਨ ਸੁਝੈ ॥
andh dhundh par gee hath ar mukh na sujhai |
There was such a terrible destruction that nothing could be recognized,
ਸੁਮੁਹੇ ਸੂਰ ਸਾਵੰਤ ਸਭ ਫਉਜ ਰਾਜ ਅੰਗਦ ਸਮਰ ॥
sumuhe soor saavant sabh fauj raaj angad samar |
The mighty forces alongwith Angad are being seen,
ਜੈ ਸਦ ਨਿਨਦ ਬਿਹਦ ਹੂਅ ਧਨੁ ਜੰਪਤ ਸੁਰਪੁਰ ਅਮਰ ॥੩੭੨॥
jai sad ninad bihad hooa dhan janpat surapur amar |372|
And the hails of victory began to resound in the sky.372.
ਇਤ ਅੰਗਦ ਯੁਵਰਾਜ ਦੁਤੀਅ ਦਿਸ ਬੀਰ ਅਕੰਪਨ ॥
eit angad yuvaraaj duteea dis beer akanpan |
On this side the crown prince Angad and on that side the mighty Akampan,
ਕਰਤ ਬ੍ਰਿਸਟ ਸਰ ਧਾਰ ਤਜਤ ਨਹੀ ਨੈਕ ਅਯੋਧਨ ॥
karat brisatt sar dhaar tajat nahee naik ayodhan |
Are not feeling tired of showering their arrows.
ਹਥ ਬਥ ਮਿਲ ਗਈ ਲੁਥ ਬਿਥਰੀ ਅਹਾੜੰ ॥
hath bath mil gee luth bitharee ahaarran |
The hands are meeting hands and the corpses are lying scattered,
ਘੁਮੇ ਘਾਇ ਅਘਾਇ ਬੀਰ ਬੰਕੜੇ ਬਬਾੜੰ ॥
ghume ghaae aghaae beer bankarre babaarran |
The brave fighters are roaming and killing one another after challenging them.
ਪਿਖਤ ਬੈਠ ਬਿਬਾਣ ਬਰ ਧੰਨ ਧੰਨ ਜੰਪਤ ਅਮਰ ॥
pikhat baitth bibaan bar dhan dhan janpat amar |
The gods are hailing them while sitting in their air-vehicles.
ਭਵ ਭੂਤ ਭਵਿਖਯ ਭਵਾਨ ਮੋ ਅਬ ਲਗ ਲਖਯੋ ਨ ਅਸ ਸਮਰ ॥੩੭੩॥
bhav bhoot bhavikhay bhavaan mo ab lag lakhayo na as samar |373|
They are saying that they have never seen such-like horrible war earlier.373.
ਕਹੂੰ ਮੁੰਡ ਪਿਖੀਅਹ ਕਹੂੰ ਭਕ ਰੁੰਡ ਪਰੇ ਧਰ ॥
kahoon mundd pikheeah kahoon bhak rundd pare dhar |
Somewhere the heads are being seen and somewhere the headless trunks are visible
ਕਿਤਹੀ ਜਾਘ ਤਰਫੰਤ ਕਹੂੰ ਉਛਰੰਤ ਸੁ ਛਬ ਕਰ ॥
kitahee jaagh tarafant kahoon uchharant su chhab kar |
Somewhere the legs are writhing and jumping
ਭਰਤ ਪਤ੍ਰ ਖੇਚਰੰ ਕਹੂੰ ਚਾਵੰਡ ਚਿਕਾਰੈਂ ॥
bharat patr khecharan kahoon chaavandd chikaarain |
Somewhere the vampires are filling their vessels with blood
ਕਿਲਕਤ ਕਤਹ ਮਸਾਨ ਕਹੂੰ ਭੈਰਵ ਭਭਕਾਰੈਂ ॥
kilakat katah masaan kahoon bhairav bhabhakaarain |
Somewhere the shrieks of vultures are being heard
ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਬਿਜੈ ਕਪਿ ਕੀ ਭਈ ਹਣਯੋ ਅਸੁਰ ਰਾਵਣ ਤਣਾ ॥
eih bhaat bijai kap kee bhee hanayo asur raavan tanaa |
Somewhere the ghosts are shouting violently and somewhere the Bhairavas are laughing.
ਭੈ ਦਗ ਅਦਗ ਭਗੇ ਹਠੀ ਗਹਿ ਗਹਿ ਕਰ ਦਾਤਨ ਤ੍ਰਿਣਾ ॥੩੭੪॥
bhai dag adag bhage hatthee geh geh kar daatan trinaa |374|
In this way there was victory of Angad and he killed Akampan, the son of Ravana. On his death the frightened demons fled with the blades of grass in their mouths.374.
ਉਤੈ ਦੂਤ ਰਾਵਣੈ ਜਾਇ ਹਤ ਬੀਰ ਸੁਣਾਯੋ ॥
autai doot raavanai jaae hat beer sunaayo |
On that side the messengers gave the news of the death of Akampan to Ravana,
ਇਤ ਕਪਿਪਤ ਅਰੁ ਰਾਮ ਦੂਤ ਅੰਗਦਹਿ ਪਠਾਯੋ ॥
eit kapipat ar raam doot angadeh patthaayo |
And on this side Angand the lord of monkeys was sent as envoy of Ram to Ravna.
ਕਹੀ ਕਥ ਤਿਹ ਸਥ ਗਥ ਕਰਿ ਤਥ ਸੁਨਾਯੋ ॥
kahee kath tih sath gath kar tath sunaayo |
He was sent to tell all the facts to Ravna
ਮਿਲਹੁ ਦੇਹੁ ਜਾਨਕੀ ਕਾਲ ਨਾਤਰ ਤੁਹਿ ਆਯੋ ॥
milahu dehu jaanakee kaal naatar tuhi aayo |
And also advise him to return Sita in order to stall his death.
ਪਗ ਭੇਟ ਚਲਤ ਭਯੋ ਬਾਲ ਸੁਤ ਪ੍ਰਿਸਟ ਪਾਨ ਰਘੁਬਰ ਧਰੇ ॥
pag bhett chalat bhayo baal sut prisatt paan raghubar dhare |
Angad, the son of Bali, went on his errand after touching the feet of Ram,
ਭਰ ਅੰਕ ਪੁਲਕਤ ਨ ਸਪਜਿਯੋ ਭਾਤ ਅਨਿਕ ਆਸਿਖ ਕਰੇ ॥੩੭੫॥
bhar ank pulakat na sapajiyo bhaat anik aasikh kare |375|
Who bade him farewell by patting on his back and expressing many types of benedictions.375.

ਦੇਹ ਸੀਆ ਦਸਕੰਧ ਛਾਹਿ ਨਹੀ ਦੇਖਨ ਪੈਹੋ ॥
deh seea dasakandh chhaeh nahee dekhan paiho |
Angad says, “O ten-headed Ravana! Return Sita, you will not be able to see her shadow (i.e. you will be killed).
ਲੰਕ ਛੀਨ ਲੀਜੀਐ ਲੰਕ ਲਖਿ ਜੀਤ ਨ ਜੈਹੋ ॥
lank chheen leejeeai lank lakh jeet na jaiho |
Ravana says, “None can conquer me ever after the seixure of Lanka.”
ਕ੍ਰੁਧ ਬਿਖੈ ਜਿਨ ਘੋਰੁ ਪਿਖ ਕਸ ਜੁਧੁ ਮਚੈ ਹੈ ॥
krudh bikhai jin ghor pikh kas judh machai hai |
Angad says again, “Your intellect has been spoiled by your rage, how will you be able to wage the war.”
ਰਾਮ ਸਹਿਤ ਕਪਿ ਕਟਕ ਆਜ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਸਯਾਰ ਖਵੈ ਹੈ ॥
raam sahit kap kattak aaj mrig sayaar khavai hai |
Ravana replies, “I shall cause even today all the army of monkeys alongwith Ram to be devoured by the animals and jackals.”
ਜਿਨ ਕਰ ਸੁ ਗਰਬੁ ਸੁਣ ਮੂੜ ਮਤ ਗਰਬ ਗਵਾਇ ਘਨੇਰ ਘਰ ॥
jin kar su garab sun moorr mat garab gavaae ghaner ghar |
Angad says, “O Ravana, do not be egoistic, this ego has destroyed many houses.”
ਬਸ ਕਰੇ ਸਰਬ ਘਰ ਗਰਬ ਹਮ ਏ ਕਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਦ੍ਵੈ ਦੀਨ ਨਰ ॥੩੭੬॥
bas kare sarab ghar garab ham e kin meh dvai deen nar |376|
Ravana replies. “I am proud because I have brought under control all with my own power, then what power these two human beings Ram and Lakshman can wield.”376.

ਅਗਨ ਪਾਕ ਕਹ ਕਰੈ ਪਵਨ ਮੁਰ ਬਾਰ ਬੁਹਾਰੈ ॥
agan paak keh karai pavan mur baar buhaarai |
The god of fire is my cook and the god of wind is my sweeper,
ਚਵਰ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਮਾ ਧਰੈ ਸੂਰ ਛਤ੍ਰਹਿ ਸਿਰ ਢਾਰੈ ॥
chavar chandramaa dharai soor chhatreh sir dtaarai |
The moon-god swings the fly-whisk over my head and the sun-god wields the canopy over my head
ਮਦ ਲਛਮੀ ਪਿਆਵੰਤ ਬੇਦ ਮੁਖ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਉਚਾਰਤ ॥
mad lachhamee piaavant bed mukh braham uchaarat |
Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, serves drinks to me and Brahma recites the Vedic mantras for me.
ਬਰਨ ਬਾਰ ਨਿਤ ਭਰੇ ਔਰ ਕੁਲੁਦੇਵ ਜੁਹਾਰਤ ॥
baran baar nit bhare aauar kuludev juhaarat |
Varuna is my water-carrier and pays obeisance in front of my family-god
ਨਿਜ ਕਹਤਿ ਸੁ ਬਲ ਦਾਨਵ ਪ੍ਰਬਲ ਦੇਤ ਧਨੁਦਿ ਜਛ ਮੋਹਿ ਕਰ ॥
nij kehat su bal daanav prabal det dhanud jachh mohi kar |
This is my whole power-formation, besides them all the demon-forces are with me, for which reason the Yakshas etc. gladly present present all types of their wealth to me.
ਵੇ ਜੁਧ ਜੀਤ ਤੇ ਜਾਹਿਗੇ ਕਹਾ ਦੋਇ ਤੇ ਦੀਨ ਨਰ ॥੩੭੭॥
ve judh jeet te jaahige kahaa doe te deen nar |377|
The person about whom you are talking, both of them are very low and helpless men, how shall then they win the war?377.
ਕਹਿ ਹਾਰਯੋ ਕਪਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਦਈਤ ਪਤਿ ਏਕ ਨ ਮਾਨੀ ॥
keh haarayo kap kott deet pat ek na maanee |
Angad, the monkey-chief, advice Ravana several times, but he did not accept his advice.
ਉਠਤ ਪਾਵ ਰੁਪਿਯੋ ਸਭਾ ਮਧਿ ਸੋ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ॥
autthat paav rupiyo sabhaa madh so abhimaanee |
When he got up, he firmly planted his foot in the assembly and challenged them to remove his foot (from the floor)
ਥਕੇ ਸਕਲ ਅਸੁਰਾਰ ਪਾਵ ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਨ ਉਚਕਯੋ ॥
thake sakal asuraar paav kinahoon na uchakayo |
None of the demons could do that and accepted defeat
ਗਿਰੇ ਧਰਨ ਮੁਰਛਾਇ ਬਿਮਨ ਦਾਨਵ ਦਲ ਥਕਯੋ ॥
gire dharan murachhaae biman daanav dal thakayo |
Many of them fell down unconscious because of their spent-up strength.
ਲੈ ਚਲਯੋ ਬਭੀਛਨ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਤਿਹ ਬਾਲ ਪੁਤ੍ਰ ਧੂਸਰ ਬਰਨ ॥
lai chalayo babheechhan bhraat tih baal putr dhoosar baran |
That earthen-coloured Angad left the court of Ravana alongwith Vibhishan.
ਭਟ ਹਟਕ ਬਿਕਟ ਤਿਹ ਨਾ ਸਕੇ ਚਲਿ ਆਯੋ ਜਿਤ ਰਾਮ ਰਨ ॥੩੭੮॥
bhatt hattak bikatt tih naa sake chal aayo jit raam ran |378|
When the demons tried to obstruct him, he routed and destroyed them and winning the battle in favour of Ram, he came to him.378.
ਕਹਿ ਬੁਲਯੋ ਲੰਕੇਸ ਤਾਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਰਾਜੀਵ ਲੋਚਨ ॥
keh bulayo lankes taeh prabh raajeev lochan |
Angad said on reaching, “O lotus-eyed Ram! the king of Lanka has called you for war.”
ਕੁਟਲ ਅਲਕ ਮੁਖ ਛਕੇ ਸਕਲ ਸੰਤਨ ਦੁਖ ਮੋਚਨ ॥
kuttal alak mukh chhake sakal santan dukh mochan |
At that time some curly locks of hair were walking and looking at the beauty of his anguished face
ਕੁਪੈ ਸਰਬ ਕਪਿਰਾਜ ਬਿਜੈ ਪਹਲੀ ਰਣ ਚਖੀ ॥
kupai sarab kapiraaj bijai pahalee ran chakhee |
The monkeys who had been victorious over Ravana earlier, were highly enraged on listening to the word of Angad about Ravana.
ਫਿਰੈ ਲੰਕ ਗੜਿ ਘੇਰਿ ਦਿਸਾ ਦਛਣੀ ਪਰਖੀ ॥
firai lank garr gher disaa dachhanee parakhee |
They marched towards the South in order to advance towards Lanka.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਰੈ ਬਭੀਛਨ ਲੰਕਪਤਿ ਸੁਣੀ ਬਾਤਿ ਰਾਵਣ ਘਰਣਿ ॥
prabh karai babheechhan lankapat sunee baat raavan gharan |
When, on this side Mandodari, the wife of Ravana, learnt about the scheme of Ram for making Vibhishana the king of Lanka,
ਸੁਧਿ ਸਤ ਤਬਿ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਭਈ ਗਿਰੀ ਧਰਣ ਪਰ ਹੁਐ ਬਿਮਣ ॥੩੭੯॥
sudh sat tab bisarat bhee giree dharan par huai biman |379|
She fell down unconscious on the earth.379.

ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਜੁਰੈ ਤ ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਮੀਤੁ ॥
har siau jurai ta sabh ko meet |
When someone attaches himself to the Lord, then everyone is his friend.
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਜੁਰੈ ਤ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਚੀਤੁ ॥
har siau jurai ta nihachal cheet |
When someone attaches himself to the Lord, then his consciousness is steady.
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਜੁਰੈ ਨ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਕਾੜੑਾ ॥
har siau jurai na viaapai kaarraa |
When someone attaches himself to the Lord, he is not afflicted by worries.
ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਜੁਰੈ ਤ ਹੋਇ ਨਿਸਤਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
har siau jurai ta hoe nisataaraa |1|
When someone attaches himself to the Lord, he is emancipated. ||1||
ਰੇ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਤੂੰ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਜੋਰੁ ॥
re man mere toon har siau jor |
O my mind, unite yourself with the Lord.
ਕਾਜਿ ਤੁਹਾਰੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਹੋਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
kaaj tuhaarai naahee hor |1| rahaau |
Nothing else is of any use to you. ||1||Pause||
ਵਡੇ ਵਡੇ ਜੋ ਦੁਨੀਆਦਾਰ ॥
vadde vadde jo duneeaadaar |
The great and powerful people of the world
ਕਾਹੂ ਕਾਜਿ ਨਾਹੀ ਗਾਵਾਰ ॥
kaahoo kaaj naahee gaavaar |
are of no use, you fool!
ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਦਾਸੁ ਨੀਚ ਕੁਲੁ ਸੁਣਹਿ ॥
har kaa daas neech kul suneh |
The Lord's slave may be born of humble origins,
ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਉਧਰਹਿ ॥੨॥
tis kai sang khin meh udhareh |2|
but in his company, you shall be saved in an instant. ||2||
ਕੋਟਿ ਮਜਨ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਨਾਮ ॥
kott majan jaa kai sun naam |
Hearing the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is equal to millions of cleansing baths.
ਕੋਟਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹੈ ਧਿਆਨ ॥
kott poojaa jaa kai hai dhiaan |
Meditating on it is equal to millions of worship ceremonies.
ਕੋਟਿ ਪੁੰਨ ਸੁਣਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
kott pun sun har kee baanee |
Hearing the Word of the Lord's Bani is equal to giving millions in alms.
ਕੋਟਿ ਫਲਾ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੀ ॥੩॥
kott falaa gur te bidh jaanee |3|
To know the way, through the Guru, is equal to millions of rewards. ||3||
ਮਨ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਮਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਚੇਤ ॥
man apune meh fir fir chet |
Within your mind, over and over again, think of Him,
ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਹੇਤ ॥
binas jaeh maaeaa ke het |
and your love of Maya shall depart.
ਹਰਿ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਤੁਮਰੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥
har abinaasee tumarai sang |
The Imperishable Lord is always with you.
ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਰਚੁ ਰਾਮ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥੪॥
man mere rach raam kai rang |4|
O my mind, immerse yourself in the Love of the Lord. ||4||
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕਾਮਿ ਉਤਰੈ ਸਭ ਭੂਖ ॥
jaa kai kaam utarai sabh bhookh |
Working for Him, all hunger departs.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕਾਮਿ ਨ ਜੋਹਹਿ ਦੂਤ ॥
jaa kai kaam na joheh doot |
Working for Him, the Messenger of Death will not be watching you.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕਾਮਿ ਤੇਰਾ ਵਡ ਗਮਰੁ ॥
jaa kai kaam teraa vadd gamar |
Working for Him, you shall obtain glorious greatness.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਕਾਮਿ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਤੂੰ ਅਮਰੁ ॥੫॥
jaa kai kaam hoveh toon amar |5|
Working for Him, you shall become immortal. ||5||
ਜਾ ਕੇ ਚਾਕਰ ਕਉ ਨਹੀ ਡਾਨ ॥
jaa ke chaakar kau nahee ddaan |
His servant does not suffer punishment.
ਜਾ ਕੇ ਚਾਕਰ ਕਉ ਨਹੀ ਬਾਨ ॥
jaa ke chaakar kau nahee baan |
His servant suffers no loss.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਦਫਤਰਿ ਪੁਛੈ ਨ ਲੇਖਾ ॥
jaa kai dafatar puchhai na lekhaa |
In His Court, His servant does not have to answer for his account.
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਕਰਹੁ ਬਿਸੇਖਾ ॥੬॥
taa kee chaakaree karahu bisekhaa |6|
So serve Him with distinction. ||6||
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਊਨ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਾਹੂ ਬਾਤ ॥
jaa kai aoon naahee kaahoo baat |
He is not lacking in anything.
ਏਕਹਿ ਆਪਿ ਅਨੇਕਹਿ ਭਾਤਿ ॥
ekeh aap anekeh bhaat |
He Himself is One, although He appears in so many forms.
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਹੋਇ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਹਾਲ ॥
jaa kee drisatt hoe sadaa nihaal |
By His Glance of Grace, you shall be happy forever.
ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਕਰਿ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਘਾਲ ॥੭॥
man mere kar taa kee ghaal |7|
So work for Him, O my mind. ||7||
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਚਤੁਰੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਮੂੜਾ ॥
naa ko chatur naahee ko moorraa |
No one is clever, and no one is foolish.
ਨਾ ਕੋ ਹੀਣੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਕੋ ਸੂਰਾ ॥
naa ko heen naahee ko sooraa |
No one is weak, and no one is a hero.
ਜਿਤੁ ਕੋ ਲਾਇਆ ਤਿਤ ਹੀ ਲਾਗਾ ॥
jit ko laaeaa tith hee laagaa |
As the Lord attaches someone, so is he attached.
ਸੋ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਭਾਗਾ ॥੮॥੬॥
so sevak naanak jis bhaagaa |8|6|
He alone is the Lord's servant, O Nanak, who is so blessed. ||8||6||
