ਗਹਿ ਬਾਨ ਸਿਲਾ ਸਿਤ ਸਜਿ ਧਨੰ ॥
geh baan silaa sit saj dhanan |
When Ram visualized in his mind about the abduction of Sita, he caught hold of his bow and arrows in his hand and sat down on a white rock.
ਚਹੂੰ ਓਰ ਸੁਧਾਰ ਨਿਹਾਰ ਫਿਰੇ ॥
chahoon or sudhaar nihaar fire |
ਛਿਤ ਊਪਰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਘੁਰਾਜ ਗਿਰੇ ॥੩੫੬॥
chhit aoopar sree raghuraaj gire |356|
He saw once again on all the four sides, but ultimately he fell down on the earth in disappontment.356.
ਲਘੁ ਬੀਰ ਉਠਾਇ ਸੁ ਅੰਕ ਭਰੇ ॥
lagh beer utthaae su ank bhare |
ਮੁਖ ਪੋਛ ਤਬੈ ਬਚਨਾ ਉਚਰੇ ॥
mukh pochh tabai bachanaa uchare |
His younger brother clasped him and raised him and said while cleansing his face :
ਕਸ ਅਧੀਰ ਪਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਧੀਰ ਧਰੋ ॥
kas adheer pare prabh dheer dharo |
ਸੀਅ ਜਾਇ ਕਹਾ ਤਿਹ ਸੋਧ ਕਰੋ ॥੩੫੭॥
seea jaae kahaa tih sodh karo |357|
“O my Lord! Do not be impatient, keep your composure. Ruminate on the fact where Sita has gone.?”357.
ਉਠ ਠਾਢਿ ਭਏ ਫਿਰਿ ਭੂਮ ਗਿਰੇ ॥
autth tthaadt bhe fir bhoom gire |
ਪਹਰੇਕਕ ਲਉ ਫਿਰ ਪ੍ਰਾਨ ਫਿਰੇ ॥
paharekak lau fir praan fire |
Ram got up but again swooned and came to consciousness again after some time.
ਤਨ ਚੇਤ ਸੁਚੇਤ ਉਠੇ ਹਰਿ ਯੌਂ ॥
tan chet suchet utthe har yauan |
ਰਣ ਮੰਡਲ ਮਧਿ ਗਿਰਯੋ ਭਟ ਜਯੋਂ ॥੩੫੮॥
ran manddal madh girayo bhatt jayon |358|
He got up from the earth like a warrior slowly regaining consciousness in the battlefield.358.
ਛਹੂੰ ਓਰ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਬਕਾਰ ਥਕੇ ॥
chhahoon or pukaar bakaar thake |
ਲਘੁ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਬਹੁ ਭਾਤਿ ਝਥੇ ॥
lagh bhraat bahu bhaat jhathe |
He grew tired on shouting on all the four sides and experienced great anguish alongwith his younger brother.
ਉਠ ਕੈ ਪੁਨ ਪ੍ਰਾਤ ਇਸਨਾਨ ਗਏ ॥
autth kai pun praat isanaan ge |
ਜਲ ਜੰਤ ਸਭੈ ਜਰਿ ਛਾਰਿ ਭਏ ॥੩੫੯॥
jal jant sabhai jar chhaar bhe |359|
He went to take bath early in the morning and with the impact of the heat of his agony, all the creatures in the water were burnt down and reduced to ashes.359.
ਬਿਰਹੀ ਜਿਹ ਓਰ ਸੁ ਦਿਸਟ ਧਰੈ ॥
birahee jih or su disatt dharai |
ਫਲ ਫੂਲ ਪਲਾਸ ਅਕਾਸ ਜਰੈ ॥
fal fool palaas akaas jarai |
The direction to which Ram saw in his state separation from his beloved, all the flowers and fruit as well us the trees of Palas and the sky burnt with the heat of his vision.
ਕਰ ਸੌ ਧਰ ਜਉਨ ਛੁਅੰਤ ਭਈ ॥
kar sau dhar jaun chhuant bhee |
ਕਚ ਬਾਸਨ ਜਯੋਂ ਪਕ ਫੂਟ ਗਈ ॥੩੬੦॥
kach baasan jayon pak foott gee |360|
Whenever he touched the earth with his hands, the earth cracked like a brittle vessel with his touch.360.
ਜਿਹ ਭੂਮ ਥਲੀ ਪਰ ਰਾਮ ਫਿਰੇ ॥
jih bhoom thalee par raam fire |
ਦਵ ਜਯੋਂ ਜਲ ਪਾਤ ਪਲਾਸ ਗਿਰੇ ॥
dav jayon jal paat palaas gire |
The ground on which Ram rested, the Palas trees (on that ground) were burnt down and reduced to ashes like the grass.
ਟੁਟ ਆਸੂ ਆਰਣ ਨੈਨ ਝਰੀ ॥
ttutt aasoo aaran nain jharee |
ਮਨੋ ਤਾਤ ਤਵਾ ਪਰ ਬੂੰਦ ਪਰੀ ॥੩੬੧॥
mano taat tavaa par boond paree |361|
The continuous flow of his tears evaporated on falling down on the earth like the drops of water falling on the got plate.361.
ਤਨ ਰਾਘਵ ਭੇਟ ਸਮੀਰ ਜਰੀ ॥
tan raaghav bhett sameer jaree |
ਤਜ ਧੀਰ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਸਾਝ ਦੁਰੀ ॥
taj dheer sarovar saajh duree |
Even the cold mind burnt when it touched his body and controlling its coolness and forsaking its patience, it merged into the pool of water
ਨਹਿ ਤਤ੍ਰ ਥਲੀ ਸਤ ਪਤ੍ਰ ਰਹੇ ॥
neh tatr thalee sat patr rahe |
ਜਲ ਜੰਤ ਪਰਤ੍ਰਿਨ ਪਤ੍ਰ ਦਹੇ ॥੩੬੨॥
jal jant paratrin patr dahe |362|
Even there the leaves of lotus could not survive and the creatures of water, grass, leaves etc. all were reduced to ashes with the geat of the state of separation of Ram.362.
ਇਤ ਢੂੰਢ ਬਨੇ ਰਘੁਨਾਥ ਫਿਰੇ ॥
eit dtoondt bane raghunaath fire |
ਉਤ ਰਾਵਨ ਆਨ ਜਟਾਯੁ ਘਿਰੇ ॥
aut raavan aan jattaay ghire |
On this side Ram was roaming in the forest in search of Sita, on the other side Ravana was surrounded by Jatayu.
ਰਣ ਛੋਰ ਹਠੀ ਪਗ ਦੁਐ ਨ ਭਜਯੋ ॥
ran chhor hatthee pag duai na bhajayo |
ਉਡ ਪਛ ਗਏ ਪੈ ਨ ਪਛ ਤਜਯੋ ॥੩੬੩॥
audd pachh ge pai na pachh tajayo |363|
The persistent Jatayu did not yield in its fierce fighting even though its wings were chopped.363.

GEETA MALTI STANZA
ਪਛਰਾਜ ਰਾਵਨ ਮਾਰਿ ਕੈ ਰਘੁਰਾਜ ਸੀਤਹਿ ਲੈ ਗਯੋ ॥
pachharaaj raavan maar kai raghuraaj seeteh lai gayo |
Ravana took away Sita after killing Jatayu,
ਨਭਿ ਓਰ ਖੋਰ ਨਿਹਾਰ ਕੈ ਸੁ ਜਟਾਉ ਸੀਅ ਸੰਦੇਸ ਦਯੋ ॥
nabh or khor nihaar kai su jattaau seea sandes dayo |
This message was communicated by Jatayu, when Ram saw towards the sky.
ਤਬ ਜਾਨ ਰਾਮ ਗਏ ਬਲੀ ਸੀਅ ਸਤ ਰਾਵਨ ਹੀ ਹਰੀ ॥
tab jaan raam ge balee seea sat raavan hee haree |
On meeting Jatayu Ram came to know for certain that Ravana had abducted Sita.
ਹਨਵੰਤ ਮਾਰਗ ਮੋ ਮਿਲੇ ਤਬ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਤਾ ਤਾ ਸੋਂ ਕਰੀ ॥੩੬੪॥
hanavant maarag mo mile tab mitrataa taa son karee |364|
Roaming on the paths (of the forest) Ram met Hanuman and they both became friends.364.
ਤਿਨ ਆਨ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਘੁਰਾਜ ਕੇ ਕਪਿਰਾਜ ਪਾਇਨ ਡਾਰਯੋ ॥
tin aan sree raghuraaj ke kapiraaj paaein ddaarayo |
Hanuman brought Sugriva the king of monkeys to fall at the feet of Ram.
ਤਿਨ ਬੈਠ ਗੈਠ ਇਕੈਠ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਚਾਰਯੋ ॥
tin baitth gaitth ikaitth hvai ih bhaat mantr bichaarayo |
And all of them unitedly held consultation amongst themselves,
ਕਪਿ ਬੀਰ ਧੀਰ ਸਧੀਰ ਕੇ ਭਟ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਬੀਰ ਬਿਚਾਰ ਕੈ ॥
kap beer dheer sadheer ke bhatt mantr beer bichaar kai |
All the ministers sat down and gave their personal views.
ਅਪਨਾਇ ਸੁਗ੍ਰਿਵ ਕਉ ਚਲੁ ਕਪਿਰਾਜ ਬਾਲ ਸੰਘਾਰ ਕੈ ॥੩੬੫॥
apanaae sugriv kau chal kapiraaj baal sanghaar kai |365|
Ram killed Bali, the king of monkeys and made Sugriva his permanent ally.365.

Serving the Guru, one is committed to the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਭਾਗਾ ॥
tis kau miliaa jis masatak bhaagaa |
It is received only by those who have such good destiny inscribed upon their foreheads.
ਤਿਸ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਰਵਿਆ ਸੋਇ ॥
tis kai hiradai raviaa soe |
The Lord dwells within their hearts.
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
man tan seetal nihachal hoe |1|
Their minds and bodies become peaceful and stable. ||1||
ਐਸਾ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ॥
aisaa keeratan kar man mere |
O my mind, sing such Praises of the Lord,
ਈਹਾ ਊਹਾ ਜੋ ਕਾਮਿ ਤੇਰੈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
eehaa aoohaa jo kaam terai |1| rahaau |
which shall be of use to you here and hereafter. ||1||Pause||
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਭਉ ਅਪਦਾ ਜਾਇ ॥
jaas japat bhau apadaa jaae |
Meditating on Him, fear and misfortune depart,
ਧਾਵਤ ਮਨੂਆ ਆਵੈ ਠਾਇ ॥
dhaavat manooaa aavai tthaae |
and the wandering mind is held steady.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਫਿਰਿ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
jaas japat fir dookh na laagai |
Meditating on Him, suffering shall never again overtake you.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਇਹ ਹਉਮੈ ਭਾਗੈ ॥੨॥
jaas japat ih haumai bhaagai |2|
Meditating on Him, this ego runs away. ||2||
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਵਸਿ ਆਵਹਿ ਪੰਚਾ ॥
jaas japat vas aaveh panchaa |
Meditating on Him, the five passions are overcome.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਰਿਦੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਸੰਚਾ ॥
jaas japat ridai amrit sanchaa |
Meditating on Him, Ambrosial Nectar is collected in the heart.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਇਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਬੁਝੈ ॥
jaas japat ih trisanaa bujhai |
Meditating on Him, this desire is quenched.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਗਹ ਸਿਝੈ ॥੩॥
jaas japat har daragah sijhai |3|
Meditating on Him, one is approved in the Court of the Lord. ||3||
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਕੋਟਿ ਮਿਟਹਿ ਅਪਰਾਧ ॥
jaas japat kott mitteh aparaadh |
Meditating on Him, millions of mistakes are erased.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਹਰਿ ਹੋਵਹਿ ਸਾਧ ॥
jaas japat har hoveh saadh |
Meditating on Him, one becomes Holy, blessed by the Lord.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਮਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਹੋਵੈ ॥
jaas japat man seetal hovai |
Meditating on Him, the mind is cooled and soothed.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਮਲੁ ਸਗਲੀ ਖੋਵੈ ॥੪॥
jaas japat mal sagalee khovai |4|
Meditating on Him, all filth is washed away. ||4||
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਰਤਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲੈ ॥
jaas japat ratan har milai |
Meditating on Him, the jewel of the Lord is obtained.
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਹਿਲੈ ॥
bahur na chhoddai har sang hilai |
One is reconciled with the Lord, and shall not abandon Him again.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਕਈ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
jaas japat kee baikuntth vaas |
Meditating on Him, many acquire a home in the heavens.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੫॥
jaas japat sukh sehaj nivaas |5|
Meditating on Him, one abides in intuitive peace. ||5||
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਇਹ ਅਗਨਿ ਨ ਪੋਹਤ ॥
jaas japat ih agan na pohat |
Meditating on Him, one is not affected by this fire.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਇਹੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਜੋਹਤ ॥
jaas japat ihu kaal na johat |
Meditating on Him, one is not under the gaze of Death.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਮਾਥਾ ॥
jaas japat teraa niramal maathaa |
Meditating on Him, your forehead shall be immaculate.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਸਗਲਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਥਾ ॥੬॥
jaas japat sagalaa dukh laathaa |6|
Meditating on Him, all pains are destroyed. ||6||
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਮੁਸਕਲੁ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਬਨੈ ॥
jaas japat musakal kachhoo na banai |
Meditating on Him, no difficulties are encountered.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਸੁਣਿ ਅਨਹਤ ਧੁਨੈ ॥
jaas japat sun anahat dhunai |
Meditating on Him, one hears the unstruck melody.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਇਹ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੋਇ ॥
jaas japat ih niramal soe |
Meditating on Him, one acquires this pure reputation.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਕਮਲੁ ਸੀਧਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੭॥
jaas japat kamal seedhaa hoe |7|
Meditating on Him, the heart-lotus is turned upright. ||7||
ਗੁਰਿ ਸੁਭ ਦ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਸਭ ਊਪਰਿ ਕਰੀ ॥
gur subh drisatt sabh aoopar karee |
The Guru has bestowed His Glance of Grace upon all,
ਜਿਸ ਕੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਦੇ ਹਰੀ ॥
jis kai hiradai mantru de haree |
within whose hearts the Lord has implanted His Mantra.
ਅਖੰਡ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਤਿਨਿ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਚੂਰਾ ॥
akhandd keeratan tin bhojan chooraa |
The unbroken Kirtan of the Lord's Praises is their food and nourishment.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ॥੮॥੨॥
kahu naanak jis satigur pooraa |8|2|
Says Nanak, they have the Perfect True Guru. ||8||2||

ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਰਿਦ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਧਾਰੈ ॥

Those who implant the Word of the Guru's Shabad within their hearts
ਪੰਚ ਜਨਾ ਸਿਉ ਸੰਗੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੈ ॥
panch janaa siau sang nivaarai |
cut their connections with the five passions.
ਦਸ ਇੰਦ੍ਰੀ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਵਾਸਿ ॥
das indree kar raakhai vaas |
They keep the ten organs under their control;
ਤਾ ਕੈ ਆਤਮੈ ਹੋਇ ਪਰਗਾਸੁ ॥੧॥
taa kai aatamai hoe paragaas |1|
their souls are enlightened. ||1||
ਐਸੀ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਤਾ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਹੋਇ ॥
aisee drirrataa taa kai hoe |
They alone acquire such stability,
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਦਇਆ ਮਇਆ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jaa kau deaa meaa prabh soe |1| rahaau |
whom God blesses with His Mercy and Grace. ||1||Pause||
ਸਾਜਨੁ ਦੁਸਟੁ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਏਕ ਸਮਾਨੈ ॥
saajan dusatt jaa kai ek samaanai |
Friend and foe are one and the same to them.
ਜੇਤਾ ਬੋਲਣੁ ਤੇਤਾ ਗਿਆਨੈ ॥
jetaa bolan tetaa giaanai |
Whatever they speak is wisdom.
ਜੇਤਾ ਸੁਨਣਾ ਤੇਤਾ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
jetaa sunanaa tetaa naam |
Whatever they hear is the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਜੇਤਾ ਪੇਖਨੁ ਤੇਤਾ ਧਿਆਨੁ ॥੨॥
jetaa pekhan tetaa dhiaan |2|
Whatever they see is meditation. ||2||
ਸਹਜੇ ਜਾਗਣੁ ਸਹਜੇ ਸੋਇ ॥
sahaje jaagan sahaje soe |
They awaken in peace and poise; they sleep in peace and poise.
ਸਹਜੇ ਹੋਤਾ ਜਾਇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
sahaje hotaa jaae su hoe |
That which is meant to be, automatically happens.
ਸਹਜਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਹਸਨਾ ॥
sehaj bairaag sahaje hee hasanaa |
In peace and poise, they remain detached; in peace and poise, they laugh.
ਸਹਜੇ ਚੂਪ ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਜਪਨਾ ॥੩॥
sahaje choop sahaje hee japanaa |3|
In peace and poise, they remain silent; in peace and poise, they chant. ||3||
ਸਹਜੇ ਭੋਜਨੁ ਸਹਜੇ ਭਾਉ ॥
sahaje bhojan sahaje bhaau |
In peace and poise they eat; in peace and poise they love.
ਸਹਜੇ ਮਿਟਿਓ ਸਗਲ ਦੁਰਾਉ ॥
sahaje mittio sagal duraau |
The illusion of duality is easily and totally removed.
ਸਹਜੇ ਹੋਆ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗੁ ॥
sahaje hoaa saadhoo sang |
They naturally join the Saadh Sangat, the Society of the Holy.
ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲਿਓ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨਿਸੰਗੁ ॥੪॥
sehaj milio paarabraham nisang |4|
In peace and poise, they meet and merge with the Supreme Lord God. ||4||
ਸਹਜੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਮਹਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਉਦਾਸੀ ॥
sahaje grih meh sehaj udaasee |
They are at peace in their homes, and they are at peace while detached.
ਸਹਜੇ ਦੁਬਿਧਾ ਤਨ ਕੀ ਨਾਸੀ ॥
sahaje dubidhaa tan kee naasee |
In peace, their bodies' duality is eliminated.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਇਆ ਅਨੰਦੁ ॥
jaa kai sehaj man bheaa anand |
Bliss comes naturally to their minds.
ਤਾ ਕਉ ਭੇਟਿਆ ਪਰਮਾਨੰਦੁ ॥੫॥
taa kau bhettiaa paramaanand |5|
They meet the Lord, the Embodiment of Supreme Bliss. ||5||
ਸਹਜੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਓ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
sahaje amrit peeo naam |
In peaceful poise, they drink in the Ambrosial Nectar of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਸਹਜੇ ਕੀਨੋ ਜੀਅ ਕੋ ਦਾਨੁ ॥
sahaje keeno jeea ko daan |
In peace and poise, they give to the poor.
ਸਹਜ ਕਥਾ ਮਹਿ ਆਤਮੁ ਰਸਿਆ ॥
sehaj kathaa meh aatam rasiaa |
Their souls naturally delight in the Lord's Sermon.
ਤਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਵਸਿਆ ॥੬॥
taa kai sang abinaasee vasiaa |6|
The Imperishable Lord abides with them. ||6||
ਸਹਜੇ ਆਸਣੁ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
sahaje aasan asathir bhaaeaa |
In peace and poise, they assume the unchanging position.
ਸਹਜੇ ਅਨਹਤ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਇਆ ॥
sahaje anahat sabad vajaaeaa |

ਸਹਜੇ ਰੁਣ ਝੁਣਕਾਰੁ ਸੁਹਾਇਆ ॥
sahaje run jhunakaar suhaaeaa |
In peace and poise, the celestial bells resound.
ਤਾ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੭॥
taa kai ghar paarabraham samaaeaa |7|
Within their homes, the Supreme Lord God is pervading. ||7||
ਸਹਜੇ ਜਾ ਕਉ ਪਰਿਓ ਕਰਮਾ ॥
sahaje jaa kau pario karamaa |
With intuitive ease, they meet the Lord, according to their karma.
ਸਹਜੇ ਗੁਰੁ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਸਚੁ ਧਰਮਾ ॥
sahaje gur bhettio sach dharamaa |
With intuitive ease, they meet with the Guru, in the true Dharma.
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸਹਜੁ ਭਇਆ ਸੋ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
jaa kai sehaj bheaa so jaanai |
Those who know, attain the poise of intuitive peace.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦਾਸ ਤਾ ਕੈ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੈ ॥੮॥੩॥
naanak daas taa kai kurabaanai |8|3|
Slave Nanak is a sacrifice to them. ||8||3||
