ਰਾਵਣ ਨੀਚ ਮਰੀਚ ਹੂੰ ਕੇ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਬੀਚ ਗਏ ਬਧ ਬੀਰ ਸੁਨੈਹੈ ॥
raavan neech mareech hoon ke grih beech ge badh beer sunaihai |
Hearing about the killing of Khar and Dushan the vile Ravan went to the house of Marich.
ਬੀਸਹੂੰ ਬਾਹਿ ਹਥਿਆਰ ਗਹੇ ਰਿਸ ਮਾਰ ਮਨੈ ਦਸ ਸੀਸ ਧੁਨੈ ਹੈ ॥
beesahoon baeh hathiaar gahe ris maar manai das sees dhunai hai |
He held his weapons in all his twenty hands and was furiously muzzling his ten heads.
ਨਾਕ ਕਟਯੋ ਜਿਨ ਸੂਪਨਖਾ ਕਹਤਉ ਤਿਹ ਕੋ ਦੁਖ ਦੋਖ ਲਗੈ ਹੈ ॥
naak kattayo jin soopanakhaa kahtau tih ko dukh dokh lagai hai |
He said, “Those who have chopped the nose of Surapankha, their such action has agonised me
ਰਾਵਲ ਕੋ ਬਨੁ ਕੈ ਪਲ ਮੋ ਛਲ ਕੈ ਤਿਹ ਕੀ ਘਰਨੀ ਧਰਿ ਲਯੈ ਹੈ ॥੩੪੮॥
raaval ko ban kai pal mo chhal kai tih kee gharanee dhar layai hai |348|
“I shall steal their wife in the garb of a Yogi form the forest in your company.”348.

ਨਾਥ ਅਨਾਥ ਸਨਾਥ ਕੀਯੋ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਅਤਿ ਮੋਰ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਹ ਆਏ ॥
naath anaath sanaath keeyo kar kai at mor kripaa keh aae |
“O my Lord! You had been very kind to came to my place.
ਭਉਨ ਭੰਡਾਰ ਅਟੀ ਬਿਕਟੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਆਜ ਸਭੈ ਘਰ ਬਾਰ ਸੁਹਾਏ ॥
bhaun bhanddaar attee bikattee prabh aaj sabhai ghar baar suhaae |
“My stores are overflowing on your arrival, O my Lord!
ਦ੍ਵੈ ਕਰਿ ਜੋਰ ਕਰਉ ਬਿਨਤੀ ਸੁਨਿ ਕੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਨਾਥ ਬੁਰੋ ਮਤ ਮਾਨੋ ॥
dvai kar jor krau binatee sun kai nripanaath buro mat maano |
“But with folded hands I request and kindly do not mind,
ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਘੁਬੀਰ ਸਹੀ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਤਿਨੈ ਤੁਮ ਮਾਨਸ ਕੈ ਨ ਪਛਾਨੋ ॥੨੪੯॥
sree raghubeer sahee avataar tinai tum maanas kai na pachhaano |249|
“That is my supplication that Ram is in reality an incarnation, do not consider him as a man like yourself.”349.
ਰੋਸ ਭਰਯੋ ਸਭ ਅੰਗ ਜਰਯੋ ਮੁਖ ਰਤ ਕਰਯੋ ਜੁਗ ਨੈਨ ਤਚਾਏ ॥
ros bharayo sabh ang jarayo mukh rat karayo jug nain tachaae |
Hearing these words, Ravan was filled with anger and his limbs began to burn, his face turned red and his eyes expanded with anger.
ਤੈ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਹਮਰੇ ਸਠ ਬੋਲਨ ਮਾਨਸ ਦੁਐ ਅਵਤਾਰ ਗਨਾਏ ॥
tai na lagai hamare satth bolan maanas duai avataar ganaae |
He said, “O fool! what are you speaking before me and considering those two men as incarnations
ਮਾਤ ਕੀ ਏਕ ਹੀ ਬਾਤ ਕਹੇ ਤਜਿ ਤਾਤ ਘ੍ਰਿਣਾ ਬਨਬਾਸ ਨਿਕਾਰੇ ॥
maat kee ek hee baat kahe taj taat ghrinaa banabaas nikaare |
“Their mother spoke only once and their father indignantly sent them to the forest
ਤੇ ਦੋਊ ਦੀਨ ਅਧੀਨ ਜੁਗੀਯਾ ਕਸ ਕੈ ਭਿਰਹੈਂ ਸੰਗ ਆਨ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥੩੫੦॥
te doaoo deen adheen jugeeyaa kas kai bhirahain sang aan hamaare |350|
“Both of them are lowly and helpless, how will they be able to fight against me.350.
ਜਉ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਤ ਤਹਾ ਕਹ ਤੈ ਸਠਿ ਤੋਰ ਜਟਾਨ ਕੋ ਜੂਟ ਪਟੈ ਹੌ ॥
jau nahee jaat tahaa keh tai satth tor jattaan ko joott pattai hau |
“O fool! if I had not come to ask you for going there, I would have uprooted and thrown your matted hair,
ਕੰਚਨ ਕੋਟ ਕੇ ਊਪਰ ਤੇ ਡਰ ਤੋਹਿ ਨਦੀਸਰ ਬੀਚ ਡੁਬੈ ਹੌ ॥
kanchan kott ke aoopar te ddar tohi nadeesar beech ddubai hau |
“And from the top of this golden citadel I would have thrown you in the sea and get you drowned.”
ਚਿਤ ਚਿਰਾਤ ਬਸਾਤ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਰਿਸਾਤ ਚਲਯੋ ਮੁਨ ਘਾਤ ਪਛਾਨੀ ॥
chit chiraat basaat kachhoo na risaat chalayo mun ghaat pachhaanee |
Hearing these world and pining in his mind and in anger, realizing the gravity of the occasion, Marich left that place
ਰਾਵਨ ਨੀਚ ਕੀ ਮੀਚ ਅਧੋਗਤ ਰਾਘਵ ਪਾਨ ਪੁਰੀ ਸੁਰਿ ਮਾਨੀ ॥੩੫੧॥
raavan neech kee meech adhogat raaghav paan puree sur maanee |351|
He felt that the death and decadence of the vile Ravan is certain at the hands of Ram.351.
ਕੰਚਨ ਕੋ ਹਰਨਾ ਬਨ ਕੇ ਰਘੁਬੀਰ ਬਲੀ ਜਹ ਥੋ ਤਹ ਆਯੋ ॥
kanchan ko haranaa ban ke raghubeer balee jeh tho teh aayo |
He transformed himself into a golden deer and reached at the abode of Ram.
ਰਾਵਨ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਉਤ ਕੇ ਜੁਗੀਆ ਸੀਅ ਲੈਨ ਚਲਯੋ ਜਨੁ ਮੀਚ ਚਲਾਯੋ ॥
raavan hvai ut ke jugeea seea lain chalayo jan meech chalaayo |
On the other side Ravana put on the garb of a Yogi and went to abduct Sita, it seemed that death was driving him there.
ਸੀਅ ਬਿਲੋਕ ਕੁਰੰਕ ਪ੍ਰਭਾ ਕਹ ਮੋਹਿ ਰਹੀ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੀਰ ਉਚਾਰੀ ॥
seea bilok kurank prabhaa keh mohi rahee prabh teer uchaaree |
Seeing the beauty of the golden deer, Sita came near Ram and said :
ਆਨ ਦਿਜੈ ਹਮ ਕਉ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਵਾਸੁਨ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਵਧੇਸ ਮੁਕੰਦ ਮੁਰਾਰੀ ॥੩੫੨॥
aan dijai ham kau mrig vaasun sree avadhes mukand muraaree |352|
“O the king of Oudh and the destroyer of demons! Go and bring that deer for me.”352.

Speech of Ram :
ਸੀਅ ਮ੍ਰਿਗਾ ਕਹੂੰ ਕੰਚਨ ਕੋ ਨਹਿ ਕਾਨ ਸੁਨਯੋ ਬਿਧਿ ਨੈ ਨ ਬਨਾਯੋ ॥
seea mrigaa kahoon kanchan ko neh kaan sunayo bidh nai na banaayo |
“O Sita! no one had heard about the golden deer and even the Lord hath not created it
ਬੀਸ ਬਿਸਵੇ ਛਲ ਦਾਨਵ ਕੋ ਬਨ ਮੈ ਜਿਹ ਆਨ ਤੁਮੈ ਡਹਕਾਯੋ ॥
bees bisave chhal daanav ko ban mai jih aan tumai ddahakaayo |
“This is certainly the deceit of some demon, who has caused this deception in you.”
ਪਿਆਰੀ ਕੋ ਆਇਸ ਮੇਟ ਸਕੈ ਨ ਬਿਲੋਕ ਸੀਆ ਕਹੁ ਆਤੁਰ ਭਾਰੀ ॥
piaaree ko aaeis mett sakai na bilok seea kahu aatur bhaaree |
Seeing the affliction of Sita, Ram could not put aside her wish
ਬਾਧ ਨਿਖੰਗ ਚਲੇ ਕਟਿ ਸੌ ਕਹਿ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਈਹਾ ਕਰਿਜੈ ਰਖਵਾਰੀ ॥੩੫੩॥
baadh nikhang chale katt sau keh bhraat eehaa karijai rakhavaaree |353|
He tied his quiver and left for bringing the golden deer, leaving behind Lakshman for Sita’s protection.353.
ਓਟ ਥਕਯੋ ਕਰਿ ਕੋਟਿ ਨਿਸਾਚਰ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਘੁਬੀਰ ਨਿਦਾਨ ਸੰਘਾਰਯੋ ॥
ott thakayo kar kott nisaachar sree raghubeer nidaan sanghaarayo |
The demon Marich tried to put Ram in uncertainty by running away at a high speed, but ultimately he was tired and Ram killed him.
ਹੇ ਲਹੁ ਬੀਰ ਉਬਾਰ ਲੈ ਮੋਕਹ ਯੌ ਕਹਿ ਕੈ ਪੁਨਿ ਰਾਮ ਪੁਕਾਰਯੋ ॥
he lahu beer ubaar lai mokah yau keh kai pun raam pukaarayo |
But at the time of death he shouted loudly in the voice of Ram, “O Brother, save me.”
ਜਾਨਕੀ ਬੋਲ ਕੁਬੋਲ ਸੁਨਯੋ ਤਬ ਹੀ ਤਿਹ ਓਰ ਸੁਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਪਠਾਯੋ ॥
jaanakee bol kubol sunayo tab hee tih or sumitr patthaayo |
When Sita heard this frightening cry, she sent the mighty Lakshman to that side,
ਰੇਖ ਕਮਾਨ ਕੀ ਕਾਢ ਮਹਾਬਲ ਜਾਤ ਭਏ ਇਤ ਰਾਵਨ ਆਯੋ ॥੩੫੪॥
rekh kamaan kee kaadt mahaabal jaat bhe it raavan aayo |354|
Who before leaving drew a line there and then Ravana came in.354.
ਭੇਖ ਅਲੇਖ ਉਚਾਰ ਕੈ ਰਾਵਣ ਜਾਤ ਭਏ ਸੀਅ ਕੇ ਢਿਗ ਯੌ ॥
bhekh alekh uchaar kai raavan jaat bhe seea ke dtig yau |
Wearing the garb of a Yogi and uttering the traditional invocation for alms, Ravan went near Sita,
ਅਵਿਲੋਕ ਧਨੀ ਧਨਵਾਨ ਬਡੋ ਤਿਹ ਜਾਇ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਗ ਮੋ ਠਗ ਜਯੋ ॥
avilok dhanee dhanavaan baddo tih jaae milai mag mo tthag jayo |
Like a thug visiting a wealthy person and said,
ਕਛੁ ਦੇਹੁ ਭਿਛਾ ਮ੍ਰਿਗ ਨੈਨ ਹਮੈ ਇਹ ਰੇਖ ਮਿਟਾਇ ਹਮੈ ਅਬ ਹੀ ॥
kachh dehu bhichhaa mrig nain hamai ih rekh mittaae hamai ab hee |
“O doe-eyed, cross this line and give me some alms,”
ਬਿਨੁ ਰੇਖ ਭਈ ਅਵਿਲੋਕ ਲਈ ਹਰਿ ਸੀਅ ਉਡਯੋ ਨਭਿ ਕਉ ਤਬ ਹੀ ॥੩੫੫॥
bin rekh bhee avilok lee har seea uddayo nabh kau tab hee |355|
And when Ravan saw Sita crossing the line, he seized her and began to fly towards the sky.355.
ਇਤਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਨਾਟਕ ਰਾਮ ਵਤਾਰ ਕਥਾ ਸੀਤਾ ਹਰਨ ਧਿਆਇ ਸਮਾਪਤਮ ॥

ੴ ਸਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਰਤਾ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ॥
ik oankaar sat naam karataa purakh gur prasaad |
One Universal Creator God. Truth Is The Name. Creative Being Personified. By Guru's Grace:
ਜਬ ਇਹੁ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਕਰਤ ਗੁਮਾਨਾ ॥
jab ihu man meh karat gumaanaa |
When this mind is filled with pride,
ਤਬ ਇਹੁ ਬਾਵਰੁ ਫਿਰਤ ਬਿਗਾਨਾ ॥
tab ihu baavar firat bigaanaa |
then it wanders around like a madman and a lunatic.
ਜਬ ਇਹੁ ਹੂਆ ਸਗਲ ਕੀ ਰੀਨਾ ॥
jab ihu hooaa sagal kee reenaa |
But when it becomes the dust of all,
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਰਮਈਆ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਚੀਨਾ ॥੧॥
taa te rameea ghatt ghatt cheenaa |1|
then it recognizes the Lord in each and every heart. ||1||
ਸਹਜ ਸੁਹੇਲਾ ਫਲੁ ਮਸਕੀਨੀ ॥
sehaj suhelaa fal masakeenee |
The fruit of humility is intuitive peace and pleasure.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਅਪੁਨੈ ਮੋਹਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੀਨੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
satigur apunai mohi daan deenee |1| rahaau |
My True Guru has given me this gift. ||1||Pause||
ਜਬ ਕਿਸ ਕਉ ਇਹੁ ਜਾਨਸਿ ਮੰਦਾ ॥
jab kis kau ihu jaanas mandaa |
When he believes others to be bad,
ਤਬ ਸਗਲੇ ਇਸੁ ਮੇਲਹਿ ਫੰਦਾ ॥
tab sagale is meleh fandaa |
then everyone lays traps for him.
ਮੇਰ ਤੇਰ ਜਬ ਇਨਹਿ ਚੁਕਾਈ ॥
mer ter jab ineh chukaaee |
But when he stops thinking in terms of 'mine' and 'yours',
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਇਸੁ ਸੰਗਿ ਨਹੀ ਬੈਰਾਈ ॥੨॥
taa te is sang nahee bairaaee |2|
then no one is angry with him. ||2||
ਜਬ ਇਨਿ ਅਪੁਨੀ ਅਪਨੀ ਧਾਰੀ ॥
jab in apunee apanee dhaaree |
When he clings to 'my own, my own',
ਤਬ ਇਸ ਕਉ ਹੈ ਮੁਸਕਲੁ ਭਾਰੀ ॥
tab is kau hai musakal bhaaree |
then he is in deep trouble.
ਜਬ ਇਨਿ ਕਰਣੈਹਾਰੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥
jab in karanaihaar pachhaataa |
But when he recognizes the Creator Lord,
ਤਬ ਇਸ ਨੋ ਨਾਹੀ ਕਿਛੁ ਤਾਤਾ ॥੩॥
tab is no naahee kichh taataa |3|
then he is free of torment. ||3||
ਜਬ ਇਨਿ ਅਪੁਨੋ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਮੋਹਾ ॥
jab in apuno baadhio mohaa |
When he entangles himself in emotional attachment,
ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ਸਦਾ ਜਮਿ ਜੋਹਾ ॥
aavai jaae sadaa jam johaa |
he comes and goes in reincarnation, under the constant gaze of Death.
ਜਬ ਇਸ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਬਿਨਸੇ ਭਰਮਾ ॥
jab is te sabh binase bharamaa |
But when all his doubts are removed,
ਭੇਦੁ ਨਾਹੀ ਹੈ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ॥੪॥
bhed naahee hai paarabrahamaa |4|
then there is no difference between him and the Supreme Lord God. ||4||
ਜਬ ਇਨਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨੇ ਭੇਦਾ ॥
jab in kichh kar maane bhedaa |
When he perceives differences,
ਤਬ ਤੇ ਦੂਖ ਡੰਡ ਅਰੁ ਖੇਦਾ ॥
tab te dookh ddandd ar khedaa |
then he suffers pain, punishment and sorrow.
ਜਬ ਇਨਿ ਏਕੋ ਏਕੀ ਬੂਝਿਆ ॥
jab in eko ekee boojhiaa |
But when he recognizes the One and Only Lord,
ਤਬ ਤੇ ਇਸ ਨੋ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਸੂਝਿਆ ॥੫॥
tab te is no sabh kichh soojhiaa |5|
he understands everything. ||5||
ਜਬ ਇਹੁ ਧਾਵੈ ਮਾਇਆ ਅਰਥੀ ॥
jab ihu dhaavai maaeaa arathee |
When he runs around for the sake of Maya and riches,
ਨਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾਵੈ ਨਹ ਤਿਸ ਲਾਥੀ ॥
neh tripataavai neh tis laathee |
he is not satisfied, and his desires are not quenched.
ਜਬ ਇਸ ਤੇ ਇਹੁ ਹੋਇਓ ਜਉਲਾ ॥
jab is te ihu hoeo jaulaa |
But when he runs away from Maya,
ਪੀਛੈ ਲਾਗਿ ਚਲੀ ਉਠਿ ਕਉਲਾ ॥੬॥
peechhai laag chalee utth kaulaa |6|
then the Goddess of Wealth gets up and follows him. ||6||
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਜਉ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਮਿਲਿਓ ॥
kar kirapaa jau satigur milio |
When, by His Grace, the True Guru is met,
ਮਨ ਮੰਦਰ ਮਹਿ ਦੀਪਕੁ ਜਲਿਓ ॥
man mandar meh deepak jalio |
the lamp is lit within the temple of the mind.
ਜੀਤ ਹਾਰ ਕੀ ਸੋਝੀ ਕਰੀ ॥
jeet haar kee sojhee karee |
When he realizes what victory and defeat really are,
ਤਉ ਇਸੁ ਘਰ ਕੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਪਰੀ ॥੭॥
tau is ghar kee keemat paree |7|
then he comes to appreciate the true value of his own home. ||7||
ਕਰਨ ਕਰਾਵਨ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਏਕੈ ॥
karan karaavan sabh kichh ekai |
The One Lord is the Creator of all things, the Cause of causes.
ਆਪੇ ਬੁਧਿ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਬਿਬੇਕੈ ॥
aape budh beechaar bibekai |
He Himself is wisdom, contemplation and discerning understanding.
ਦੂਰਿ ਨ ਨੇਰੈ ਸਭ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਾ ॥
door na nerai sabh kai sangaa |
He is not far away; He is near at hand, with all.
ਸਚੁ ਸਾਲਾਹਣੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਹਰਿ ਰੰਗਾ ॥੮॥੧॥
sach saalaahan naanak har rangaa |8|1|
So praise the True One, O Nanak, with love! ||8||1||
