ਊਚੇ ਦ੍ਰੁਮ ਸਾਲ ਜਹਾ ਲਾਬੇ ਬਟ ਤਾਲ ਤਹਾ ਐਸੀ ਠਉਰ ਤਪ ਕਉ ਪਧਾਰੈ ਐਸੋ ਕਉਨ ਹੈ ॥
aooche drum saal jahaa laabe batt taal tahaa aisee tthaur tap kau padhaarai aiso kaun hai |
Where there are high saal trees and Banyan trees and the large tanks, who is the person who performs austerities
ਜਾ ਕੀ ਛਬ ਦੇਖ ਦੁਤ ਖਾਡਵ ਕੀ ਫੀਕੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਆਭਾ ਤਕੀ ਨੰਦਨ ਬਿਲੋਕ ਭਜੇ ਮੌਨ ਹੈ ॥
jaa kee chhab dekh dut khaaddav kee feekee laagai aabhaa takee nandan bilok bhaje mauan hai |
And seeing whose beauty, the beauty of Pandavas seems devoid of radiance and the forests of heaven feel it better to keep silent on observing his beauty?
ਤਾਰਨ ਕੀ ਕਹਾ ਨੈਕ ਨਭ ਨ ਨਿਹਰਾਯੋ ਜਾਇ ਸੂਰਜ ਕੀ ਜੋਤ ਤਹਾ ਚੰਦ੍ਰਕੀ ਨ ਜਉਨ ਹੈ ॥
taaran kee kahaa naik nabh na niharaayo jaae sooraj kee jot tahaa chandrakee na jaun hai |
There is so much dense shade there that not to speak of the stars, the sky is also not seen there, the light of the sun and moon does not reach there.
ਦੇਵ ਨ ਨਿਹਾਰਯੋ ਕੋਊ ਦੈਤ ਨ ਬਿਹਾਰਯੋ ਤਹਾ ਪੰਛੀ ਕੀ ਨ ਗੰਮ ਜਹਾ ਚੀਟੀ ਕੋ ਨ ਗਉਨ ਹੈ ॥੩੦੦॥
dev na nihaarayo koaoo dait na bihaarayo tahaa panchhee kee na gam jahaa cheettee ko na gaun hai |300|
No god or demon lives and the birds and even an ant has no access there.300.

The vultures shirked and the warriors faced each other. They were bedecked nicely and there was unending zeal in them.303.

There were horses and intoxicated elephants bedecked with armours. The shrieks of the vultures were heard and the warriors were seen entangled with each other.304.

The elephants serene like sea were there and the trumpets were resounding, the long-armed warriors with unparalleled enthusiasm looked impressive.305.

The warriors who never fell began to fall and also regain their control

There were egoistic attacks from all the four sides and the warriors blazed like embers.306.

The warriors were keeping their control and the weapons began to slip away from their hands like serpents.307.

ਇਸੁ ਜੁਗ ਕਾ ਧਰਮੁ ਪੜਹੁ ਤੁਮ ਭਾਈ ॥

Learn the Dharma of this age, O Siblings of Destiny;
ਪੂਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਸਭ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
poorai gur sabh sojhee paaee |
all understanding is obtained from the Perfect Guru.
ਐਥੈ ਅਗੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਖਾਈ ॥੧॥
aithai agai har naam sakhaaee |1|
Here and hereafter, the Lord's Name is our Companion. ||1||
ਰਾਮ ਪੜਹੁ ਮਨਿ ਕਰਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥
raam parrahu man karahu beechaar |
Learn of the Lord, and contemplate Him in your mind.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮੈਲੁ ਉਤਾਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur parasaadee mail utaar |1| rahaau |
By Guru's Grace, your filth shall be washed away. ||1||Pause||
ਵਾਦਿ ਵਿਰੋਧਿ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਇ ॥
vaad virodh na paaeaa jaae |
Through argument and debate, He cannot be found.
ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਫੀਕਾ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥
man tan feekaa doojai bhaae |
The mind and body are made insipid through the love of duality.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੨॥
gur kai sabad sach liv laae |2|
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, lovingly attune yourself to the True Lord. ||2||
ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਾ ॥
haumai mailaa ihu sansaaraa |
This world is polluted with egotism.
ਨਿਤ ਤੀਰਥਿ ਨਾਵੈ ਨ ਜਾਇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰਾ ॥
nit teerath naavai na jaae ahankaaraa |
By taking cleansing baths daily at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, egotism is not eliminated.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਜਮੁ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਆਰਾ ॥੩॥
bin gur bhette jam kare khuaaraa |3|
Without meeting the Guru, they are tortured by Death. ||3||
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਜਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੈ ॥
so jan saachaa ji haumai maarai |
Those humble beings are true, who conquer their ego.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪੰਚ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ॥
gur kai sabad panch sanghaarai |
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they conquer the five thieves.
ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੈ ॥੪॥
aap tarai sagale kul taarai |4|
They save themselves, and save all their generations as well. ||4||
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਨਟਿ ਬਾਜੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
maaeaa mohi natt baajee paaee |
The Actor has staged the drama of emotional attachment to Maya.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧ ਰਹੇ ਲਪਟਾਈ ॥
manamukh andh rahe lapattaaee |
The self-willed manmukhs cling blindly to it.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਲਿਪਤ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੫॥
guramukh alipat rahe liv laaee |5|
The Gurmukhs remain detached, and lovingly attune themselves to the Lord. ||5||
ਬਹੁਤੇ ਭੇਖ ਕਰੈ ਭੇਖਧਾਰੀ ॥
bahute bhekh karai bhekhadhaaree |
The disguisers put on their various disguises.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਤਿਸਨਾ ਫਿਰੈ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
antar tisanaa firai ahankaaree |
Desire rages within them, and they carry on egotistically.
ਆਪੁ ਨ ਚੀਨੈ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥੬॥
aap na cheenai baajee haaree |6|
They do not understand themselves, and they lose the game of life. ||6||
ਕਾਪੜ ਪਹਿਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ॥
kaaparr pahir kare chaturaaee |
Putting on religious robes, they act so clever,
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਅਤਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਈ ॥
maaeaa mohi at bharam bhulaaee |
but they are totally deluded by doubt and emotional attachment to Maya.
ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵੇ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਈ ॥੭॥
bin gur seve bahut dukh paaee |7|
Without serving the Guru, they suffer in terrible pain. ||7||
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥
naam rate sadaa bairaagee |
Those who are attuned to the Naam, the Name of the Lord, remain detached forever.
ਗ੍ਰਿਹੀ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਾਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
grihee antar saach liv laagee |
Even as householders, they lovingly attune themselves to the True Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸੇ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥੮॥੩॥
naanak satigur seveh se vaddabhaagee |8|3|
O Nanak, those who serve the True Guru are blessed and very fortunate. ||8||3||

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਵੇਦ ਅਭਿਆਸਾ ॥

Brahma is the founder of the study of the Vedas.
ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਉਪਜੇ ਦੇਵ ਮੋਹ ਪਿਆਸਾ ॥
tis te upaje dev moh piaasaa |
From him emanated the gods, enticed by desire.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਭਰਮੇ ਨਾਹੀ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥੧॥
trai gun bharame naahee nij ghar vaasaa |1|
They wander in the three qualities, and they do not dwell within their own home. ||1||
ਹਮ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥
ham har raakhe satiguroo milaaeaa |
The Lord has saved me; I have met the True Guru.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
anadin bhagat har naam drirraaeaa |1| rahaau |
He has implanted devotional worship of the Lord's Name, night and day. ||1||Pause||
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਬਾਣੀ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਜੰਜਾਲਾ ॥
trai gun baanee braham janjaalaa |
The songs of Brahma entangle people in the three qualities.
ਪੜਿ ਵਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣਹਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਮਾਰੇ ਜਮਕਾਲਾ ॥
parr vaad vakhaaneh sir maare jamakaalaa |
Reading about the debates and disputes, they are hit over the head by the Messenger of Death.
ਤਤੁ ਨ ਚੀਨਹਿ ਬੰਨਹਿ ਪੰਡ ਪਰਾਲਾ ॥੨॥
tat na cheeneh baneh pandd paraalaa |2|
They do not understand the essence of reality, and they gather their worthless bundles of straw. ||2||
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅਗਿਆਨਿ ਕੁਮਾਰਗਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
manamukh agiaan kumaarag paae |
The self-willed manmukhs, in ignorance, take the path of evil.
ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਬਹੁ ਕਰਮ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਏ ॥
har naam bisaariaa bahu karam drirraae |
They forget the Lord's Name, and in its place, they establish all sorts of rituals.
ਭਵਜਲਿ ਡੂਬੇ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਏ ॥੩॥
bhavajal ddoobe doojai bhaae |3|
They drown in the terrifying world-ocean, in the love of duality. ||3||
ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਮੁਹਤਾਜੁ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਕਹਾਵੈ ॥
maaeaa kaa muhataaj panddit kahaavai |
Driven crazy, infatuated by Maya, they call themselves Pandits - religious scholars;
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਰਾਤਾ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
bikhiaa raataa bahut dukh paavai |
stained with corruption, they suffer terrible pain.
ਜਮ ਕਾ ਗਲਿ ਜੇਵੜਾ ਨਿਤ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੰਤਾਵੈ ॥੪॥
jam kaa gal jevarraa nit kaal santaavai |4|
The noose of the Messenger of Death is around their necks; they are constantly tormented by death. ||4||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਮਕਾਲੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ॥
guramukh jamakaal nerr na aavai |
The Messenger of Death does not even approach the Gurmukhs.
ਹਉਮੈ ਦੂਜਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਵੈ ॥
haumai doojaa sabad jalaavai |
Through the Word of the Shabad, they burn away their ego and duality.
ਨਾਮੇ ਰਾਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੫॥
naame raate har gun gaavai |5|
Attuned to the Name, they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||5||
ਮਾਇਆ ਦਾਸੀ ਭਗਤਾ ਕੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਮਾਵੈ ॥
maaeaa daasee bhagataa kee kaar kamaavai |
Maya is the slave of the Lord's devotees; it works for them.
ਚਰਣੀ ਲਾਗੈ ਤਾ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਾਵੈ ॥
charanee laagai taa mehal paavai |
One who falls at their feet attains the Mansion of the Lord's Presence.
ਸਦ ਹੀ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
sad hee niramal sehaj samaavai |6|
He is forever immaculate; he is absorbed in intuitive peace. ||6||
ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਣਹਿ ਸੇ ਧਨਵੰਤ ਦਿਸਹਿ ਜੁਗ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
har kathaa suneh se dhanavant diseh jug maahee |
Those who listen to the Lord's Sermon are seen to be the wealthy people in this world.
ਤਿਨ ਕਉ ਸਭਿ ਨਿਵਹਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਪੂਜ ਕਰਾਹੀ ॥
tin kau sabh niveh anadin pooj karaahee |
Everyone bows down to them, and adores them, night and day.
ਸਹਜੇ ਗੁਣ ਰਵਹਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥੭॥
sahaje gun raveh saache man maahee |7|
They intuitively savor the Glories of the True Lord within their minds. ||7||
ਪੂਰੈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਇਆ ॥
poorai satigur sabad sunaaeaa |
The Perfect True Guru has revealed the Shabad;
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮੇਟੇ ਚਉਥੈ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
trai gun mette chauthai chit laaeaa |
it eradicates the three qualities, and attunes the consciousness to the fourth state.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਮਿਲਾਇਆ ॥੮॥੪॥
naanak haumai maar braham milaaeaa |8|4|
O Nanak, subduing egotism, one is absorbed into God. ||8||4||
