DODHAK STANZA

ਬਿਯਾਹ ਸੁਤਾ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੀ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਬਾਲੰ ॥

biyaah sutaa nrip kee nripabaalan |

ਮਾਗ ਬਿਦਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਲੀਨ ਉਤਾਲੰ ॥

maag bidaa mukh leen utaalan |

After marrying the daughter of King Janak, the princes soon asked for permission to depart.

ਸਾਜਨ ਬਾਜ ਚਲੇ ਗਜ ਸੰਜੁਤ ॥

saajan baaj chale gaj sanjut |

ਏਸਨਏਸ ਨਰੇਸਨ ਕੇ ਜੁਤ ॥੧੭੭॥

esanes naresan ke jut |177|

This group of kings accompanied by elephants and horses, having many desires in their mind, started (for back journey).177.

ਦਾਜ ਸੁਮਾਰ ਸਕੈ ਕਰ ਕਉਨੈ ॥

daaj sumaar sakai kar kaunai |

ਬੀਨ ਸਕੈ ਬਿਧਨਾ ਨਹੀ ਤਉਨੈ ॥

been sakai bidhanaa nahee taunai |

The dowry was given in such a great measure that even the Brahmins could not keep the same collectively.

ਬੇਸਨ ਬੇਸਨ ਬਾਜ ਮਹਾ ਮਤ ॥

besan besan baaj mahaa mat |

ਭੇਸਨ ਭੇਸ ਚਲੇ ਗਜ ਗਜਤ ॥੧੭੮॥

bhesan bhes chale gaj gajat |178|

Many types of horses and the thundering elephants in many garbs started moving.178.

ਬਾਜਤ ਨਾਦ ਨਫੀਰਨ ਕੇ ਗਨ ॥

baajat naad nafeeran ke gan |

ਗਾਜਤ ਸੂਰ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਥ ਮਹਾ ਮਨ ॥

gaajat soor pramaath mahaa man |

The sound of fifes resounded and the mighty warriors thundered.

ਅਉਧ ਪੁਰੀ ਨੀਅਰਾਨ ਰਹੀ ਜਬ ॥

aaudh puree neearaan rahee jab |

ਪ੍ਰਾਪਤ ਭਏ ਰਘੁਨੰਦ ਤਹੀ ਤਬ ॥੧੭੯॥

praapat bhe raghunand tahee tab |179|

When Oudhpuri was nearby, then all were welcomed by Ram.179.

ਮਾਤਨ ਵਾਰਿ ਪੀਯੋ ਜਲ ਪਾਨੰ ॥

maatan vaar peeyo jal paanan |

ਦੇਖ ਨਰੇਸ ਰਹੇ ਛਬਿ ਮਾਨੰ ॥

dekh nares rahe chhab maanan |

The mother drank water after its propitiatory offering to princes and the King Dasrath was highly pleased in his mind seeing this splendour.

ਭੂਪ ਬਿਲੋਕਤ ਲਾਇ ਲਏ ਉਰ ॥

bhoop bilokat laae le ur |

ਨਾਚਤ ਗਾਵਤ ਗੀਤ ਭਏ ਪੁਰਿ ॥੧੮੦॥

naachat gaavat geet bhe pur |180|

On seeing the princes, the king hugged them to his bosom and all the people entered the city while dancing and singing.180.

ਭੂਪਜ ਬਯਾਹ ਜਬੈ ਗ੍ਰਹ ਆਏ ॥

bhoopaj bayaah jabai grah aae |

ਬਾਜਤ ਭਾਤਿ ਅਨੇਕ ਬਧਾਏ ॥

baajat bhaat anek badhaae |

When the princes came home after their marriage, then many kinds of congratulatory songs were sung.

ਤਾਤ ਬਸਿਸਟ ਸੁਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਬੁਲਾਏ ॥

taat basisatt sumitr bulaae |

ਅਉਰ ਅਨੇਕ ਤਹਾ ਰਿਖਿ ਆਏ ॥੧੮੧॥

aaur anek tahaa rikh aae |181|

Dasrath called Vasishtha and Sumantra and with them came several other sages.181.

ਘੋਰ ਉਠੀ ਘਹਰਾਇ ਘਟਾ ਤਬ ॥

ghor utthee ghaharaae ghattaa tab |

ਚਾਰੋ ਦਿਸ ਦਿਗ ਦਾਹ ਲਖਿਯੋ ਸਭ ॥

chaaro dis dig daah lakhiyo sabh |

At that time the clouds gathered on all the four sides and all saw apparently the flames of fire in all the four directions.

ਮੰਤ੍ਰੀ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਸਭੈ ਅਕੁਲਾਨੇ ॥

mantree mitr sabhai akulaane |

ਭੂਪਤਿ ਸੋ ਇਹ ਭਾਤ ਬਖਾਨੇ ॥੧੮੨॥

bhoopat so ih bhaat bakhaane |182|

On seeing this all the ministers and friends became worried and request the king in the following manner.182.

ਹੋਤ ਉਤਪਾਤ ਬਡੇ ਸੁਣ ਰਾਜਨ ॥

hot utapaat badde sun raajan |

ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਕਰੋ ਰਿਖ ਜੋਰ ਸਮਾਜਨ ॥

mantr karo rikh jor samaajan |

“O King! There are many cases of providential wrath, tumult on all the four sides, therefore give thought to them by calling all the sages and advisers.

ਬੋਲਹੁ ਬਿਪ ਬਿਲੰਬ ਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥

bolahu bip bilanb na keejai |

ਹੈ ਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਜਗ ਅਰੰਭਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੧੮੩॥

hai krit jag aranbhan keejai |183|

“Call the Brahmins without delay and begin Krit Yajna.183.

ਆਇਸ ਰਾਜ ਦਯੋ ਤਤਕਾਲਹ ॥

aaeis raaj dayo tatakaalah |

ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਸੁ ਮਿਤ੍ਰਹ ਬੁਧ ਬਿਸਾਲਹ ॥

mantr su mitrah budh bisaalah |

“O King! give instant orders for starting the Krit Yajna without delay,

ਹੈ ਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਜਗ ਅਰੰਭਨ ਕੀਜੈ ॥

hai krit jag aranbhan keejai |

ਆਇਸ ਬੇਗ ਨਰੇਸ ਕਰੀਜੈ ॥੧੮੪॥

aaeis beg nares kareejai |184|

“In view of the great wisdom of friends and ministers.”184.

ਬੋਲਿ ਬਡੇ ਰਿਖ ਲੀਨ ਮਹਾ ਦਿਜ ॥

bol badde rikh leen mahaa dij |

ਹੈ ਤਿਨ ਬੋਲ ਲਯੋ ਜੁਤ ਰਿਤਜ ॥

hai tin bol layo jut ritaj |

The king called he eminent sages and great friends soon.

ਪਾਵਕ ਕੁੰਡ ਖੁਦਿਯੋ ਤਿਹ ਅਉਸਰ ॥

paavak kundd khudiyo tih aausar |

ਗਾਡਿਯ ਖੰਭ ਤਹਾ ਧਰਮੰ ਧਰ ॥੧੮੫॥

gaaddiy khanbh tahaa dharaman dhar |185|

The sacrificial pit was dug up there and a pillar of righteousness was established.185.

ਛੋਰਿ ਲਯੋ ਹਯਸਾਰਹ ਤੇ ਹਯ ॥

chhor layo hayasaarah te hay |

ਅਸਿਤ ਕਰਨ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਸਤ ਕੇਕਯ ॥

asit karan prabhaasat kekay |

A horse was let off from the stable so that ending the glory of other king they may be conquered.

ਦੇਸਨ ਦੇਸ ਨਰੇਸ ਦਏ ਸੰਗਿ ॥

desan des nares de sang |

ਸੁੰਦਰ ਸੂਰ ਸੁਰੰਗ ਸੁਭੈ ਅੰਗ ॥੧੮੬॥

sundar soor surang subhai ang |186|

The kings several countries were sent alongwith the horse and all of them were persons of beauteous limbs and the enhancer of glory.186.

SAMAANKA STANZA

ਨਰੇਸ ਸੰਗਿ ਕੈ ਦਏ ॥

ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ਬੀਨ ਕੈ ਲਏ ॥

The king Dasrath made selection of other efficient kings and sent them with the horse.

ਸਨਧਬਧ ਹੁਇ ਚਲੇ ॥

sanadhabadh hue chale |

ਸੁ ਬੀਰ ਬੀਰ ਹਾ ਭਲੇ ॥੧੮੭॥

su beer beer haa bhale |187|

They went having been completely embellished. These brave men were of very gentle demeanour.187.

ਬਿਦੇਸ ਦੇਸ ਗਾਹ ਕੈ ॥

bides des gaah kai |

ਅਦਾਹ ਠਉਰ ਦਾਹ ਕੈ ॥

adaah tthaur daah kai |

They roamed in several countries, both inland and foreign and at all the places they destroyed (the pride of) all with the blaze of their glory.

ਫਿਰਾਇ ਬਾਜ ਰਾਜ ਕਉ ॥

firaae baaj raaj kau |

ਸੁਧਾਰ ਰਾਜ ਕਾਜ ਕਉ ॥੧੮੮॥

sudhaar raaj kaaj kau |188|

They caused their horse to revolve on all the four sides and in this way they enhanced the royal prestige of king Dasrath.188.

ਨਰੇਸ ਪਾਇ ਲਾਗੀਯੰ ॥

nares paae laageeyan |

ਦੁਰੰਤ ਦੋਖ ਭਾਗੀਯੰ ॥

durant dokh bhaageeyan |

Many kings bowed at his feet and he removed all their agonies.

ਸੁ ਪੂਰ ਜਗ ਕੋ ਕਰਯੋ ॥

su poor jag ko karayo |

ਨਰੇਸ ਤ੍ਰਾਸ ਕਉ ਹਰਿਯੋ ॥੧੮੯॥

nares traas kau hariyo |189|

He completed his Yajna and in this way destroyed the anguish of his subjects.189.

ਅਨੰਤ ਦਾਨ ਪਾਇ ਕੈ ॥

anant daan paae kai |

ਚਲੇ ਦਿਜੰ ਅਘਾਇ ਕੈ ॥

chale dijan aghaae kai |

Receiving the gifts of many kinds the Brahmins pleased and satisfied in their mind they moved back to their places.

ਦੁਰੰਤ ਆਸਿਖੈਂ ਰੜੈਂ ॥

durant aasikhain rarrain |

ਰਿਚਾ ਸੁ ਬੇਦ ਕੀ ਪੜੈਂ ॥੧੯੦॥

richaa su bed kee parrain |190|

Giving the blessing of various kinds and singing the Vedic mantras.190.

ਨਰੇਸ ਦੇਸ ਦੇਸ ਕੇ ॥

nares des des ke |

ਸੁਭੰਤ ਬੇਸ ਬੇਸ ਕੇ ॥

subhant bes bes ke |

The kings of the inland and foreign countries decorate themselves in various garbs,

ਬਿਸੇਖ ਸੂਰ ਸੋਭਹੀਂ ॥

bisekh soor sobhaheen |

ਸੁਸੀਲ ਨਾਰਿ ਲੋਭਹੀਂ ॥੧੯੧॥

suseel naar lobhaheen |191|

And noticing the significant glory of the warriors, the beautiful and cultured women were allured towards them.191.

ਬਜੰਤ੍ਰ ਕੋਟ ਬਾਜਹੀਂ ॥

bajantr kott baajaheen |

ਸਨਾਇ ਭੇਰ ਸਾਜਹੀਂ ॥

sanaae bher saajaheen |

Millions of musical instruments were played and all the bedecked persons were full of love.

ਬਨਾਇ ਦੇਵਤਾ ਧਰੈਂ ॥

banaae devataa dharain |

ਸਮਾਨ ਜਾਇ ਪਾ ਪਰੈਂ ॥੧੯੨॥

samaan jaae paa parain |192|

The idols of gods were established and all were bowing with respect to the gods, expressing their gratitude.192.

ਕਰੈ ਡੰਡਉਤ ਪਾ ਪਰੈਂ ॥

karai ddanddaut paa parain |

ਬਿਸੇਖ ਭਾਵਨਾ ਧਰੈਂ ॥

bisekh bhaavanaa dharain |

All the people prostrated and bowed at the feet of gods and were assuming significant emotions in their minds.

ਸੁ ਮੰਤ੍ਰ ਜੰਤ੍ਰ ਜਾਪੀਐ ॥

su mantr jantr jaapeeai |

ਦੁਰੰਤ ਥਾਪ ਥਾਪੀਐ ॥੧੯੩॥

durant thaap thaapeeai |193|

Therefore was recitation of mantras and yantras and the idols of Ganas were being fixed.193.

ਨਚਾਤ ਚਾਰੁ ਮੰਗਨਾ ॥

nachaat chaar manganaa |

ਸੁ ਜਾਨ ਦੇਵ ਅੰਗਨਾ ॥

su jaan dev anganaa |

Beautiful women and heavenly damsels began to dance.

ਕਮੀ ਨ ਕਉਨ ਕਾਜ ਕੀ ॥

kamee na kaun kaaj kee |

ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ ਰਾਮਰਾਜ ਕੀ ॥੧੯੪॥

prabhaav raamaraaj kee |194|

In this way there was the sway of Ram Rajya and there was no dearth of anything.194.

ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜੀ ਦੁਖ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਾਮੁ ॥

dukh bhanjan teraa naam jee dukh bhanjan teraa naam |

The Destroyer of sorrow is Your Name, Lord; the Destroyer of sorrow is Your Name.

ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਆਰਾਧੀਐ ਪੂਰਨ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

aatth pehar aaraadheeai pooran satigur giaan |1| rahaau |

Twenty-four hours a day, dwell upon the wisdom of the Perfect True Guru. ||1||Pause||

ਜਿਤੁ ਘਟਿ ਵਸੈ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸੋਈ ਸੁਹਾਵਾ ਥਾਉ ॥

jit ghatt vasai paarabraham soee suhaavaa thaau |

That heart, in which the Supreme Lord God abides, is the most beautiful place.

ਜਮ ਕੰਕਰੁ ਨੇੜਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਰਸਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥੧॥

jam kankar nerr na aavee rasanaa har gun gaau |1|

The Messenger of Death does not even approach those who chant the Glorious Praises of the Lord with the tongue. ||1||

ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨ ਜਾਣੀਆ ਨਾ ਜਾਪੈ ਆਰਾਧਿ ॥

sevaa surat na jaaneea naa jaapai aaraadh |

I have not understood the wisdom of serving Him, nor have I worshipped Him in meditation.

ਓਟ ਤੇਰੀ ਜਗਜੀਵਨਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਅਗਮ ਅਗਾਧਿ ॥੨॥

ott teree jagajeevanaa mere tthaakur agam agaadh |2|

You are my Support, O Life of the World; O my Lord and Master, Inaccessible and Incomprehensible. ||2||

ਭਏ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਗੁਸਾਈਆ ਨਠੇ ਸੋਗ ਸੰਤਾਪ ॥

bhe kripaal gusaaeea natthe sog santaap |

When the Lord of the Universe became merciful, sorrow and suffering departed.

ਤਤੀ ਵਾਉ ਨ ਲਗਈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਰਖੇ ਆਪਿ ॥੩॥

tatee vaau na lagee satigur rakhe aap |3|

The hot winds do not even touch those who are protected by the True Guru. ||3||

ਗੁਰੁ ਨਾਰਾਇਣੁ ਦਯੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਗੁਰੁ ਸਚਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

gur naaraaein day gur gur sachaa sirajanahaar |

The Guru is the All-pervading Lord, the Guru is the Merciful Master; the Guru is the True Creator Lord.

ਗੁਰਿ ਤੁਠੈ ਸਭ ਕਿਛੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰ ॥੪॥੨॥੧੭੦॥

gur tutthai sabh kichh paaeaa jan naanak sad balihaar |4|2|170|

When the Guru was totally satisfied, I obtained everything. Servant Nanak is forever a sacrifice to Him. ||4||2||170||

Gauree Maajh, Fifth Mehl:

ਹਰਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮਾ ॥

har raam raam raam raamaa |

The Lord, the Lord, Raam, Raam, Raam:

ਜਪਿ ਪੂਰਨ ਹੋਏ ਕਾਮਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

jap pooran hoe kaamaa |1| rahaau |

meditating on Him, all affairs are resolved. ||1||Pause||

ਰਾਮ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਜਪੇਦਿਆ ਹੋਆ ਮੁਖੁ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰੁ ॥

raam gobind japediaa hoaa mukh pavitru |

Chanting the Name of the Lord of the Universe, one's mouth is sanctified.

ਹਰਿ ਜਸੁ ਸੁਣੀਐ ਜਿਸ ਤੇ ਸੋਈ ਭਾਈ ਮਿਤ੍ਰੁ ॥੧॥

har jas suneeai jis te soee bhaaee mitru |1|

One who recites to me the Praises of the Lord is my friend and brother. ||1||

ਸਭਿ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਸਭਿ ਫਲਾ ਸਰਬ ਗੁਣਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਮਾਹਿ ॥

sabh padaarath sabh falaa sarab gunaa jis maeh |

All treasures, all rewards and all virtues are in the Lord of the Universe.

ਕਿਉ ਗੋਬਿੰਦੁ ਮਨਹੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਸਿਮਰਤ ਦੁਖ ਜਾਹਿ ॥੨॥

kiau gobind manahu visaareeai jis simarat dukh jaeh |2|

Why forget Him from your mind? Remembering Him in meditation, pain departs. ||2||

ਜਿਸੁ ਲੜਿ ਲਗਿਐ ਜੀਵੀਐ ਭਵਜਲੁ ਪਈਐ ਪਾਰਿ ॥

jis larr lagiai jeeveeai bhavajal peeai paar |

Grasping the hem of His robe, we live, and cross over the terrifying world-ocean.

ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਸੰਗਿ ਉਧਾਰੁ ਹੋਇ ਮੁਖ ਊਜਲ ਦਰਬਾਰਿ ॥੩॥

mil saadhoo sang udhaar hoe mukh aoojal darabaar |3|

Joining the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, one is saved, and one's face becomes radiant in the Court of the Lord. ||3||

ਜੀਵਨ ਰੂਪ ਗੋਪਾਲ ਜਸੁ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਰਾਸਿ ॥

jeevan roop gopaal jas sant janaa kee raas |

The Praise of the Sustainer of the Universe is the essence of life, and the wealth of His Saints.

ਨਾਨਕ ਉਬਰੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਦਰਿ ਸਚੈ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥੪॥੩॥੧੭੧॥

naanak ubare naam jap dar sachai saabaas |4|3|171|

Nanak is saved, chanting the Naam, the Name of the Lord; in the True Court, he is cheered and applauded. ||4||3||171||

ਮੀਠੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ਜਿੰਦੂ ਤੂੰ ਮੀਠੇ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਉ ॥

meetthe har gun gaau jindoo toon meetthe har gun gaau |

Sing the Sweet Praises of the Lord, O my soul, sing the Sweet Praises of the Lord.

ਸਚੇ ਸੇਤੀ ਰਤਿਆ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਨਿਥਾਵੇ ਥਾਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

sache setee ratiaa miliaa nithaave thaau |1| rahaau |

Attuned to the True One, even the homeless find a home. ||1||Pause||

ਹੋਰਿ ਸਾਦ ਸਭਿ ਫਿਕਿਆ ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਫਿਕਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

hor saad sabh fikiaa tan man fikaa hoe |

All other tastes are bland and insipid; through them, the body and mind are rendered insipid as well.

ਵਿਣੁ ਪਰਮੇਸਰ ਜੋ ਕਰੇ ਫਿਟੁ ਸੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥

vin paramesar jo kare fitt su jeevan soe |1|

Without the Transcendent Lord, what can anyone do? Cursed is his life, and cursed his reputation. ||1||

ਅੰਚਲੁ ਗਹਿ ਕੈ ਸਾਧ ਕਾ ਤਰਣਾ ਇਹੁ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥

anchal geh kai saadh kaa taranaa ihu sansaar |

Grasping the hem of the robe of the Holy Saint, we cross over the world-ocean.

ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਆਰਾਧੀਐ ਉਧਰੈ ਸਭ ਪਰਵਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

paarabraham aaraadheeai udharai sabh paravaar |2|

Worship and adore the Supreme Lord God, and all your family will be saved as well. ||2||

ਸਾਜਨੁ ਬੰਧੁ ਸੁਮਿਤ੍ਰੁ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਦੇਇ ॥

saajan bandh sumitru so har naam hiradai dee |

He is a companion, a relative, and a good friend of mine, who implants the Lord's Name within my heart.

ਅਉਗਣ ਸਭਿ ਮਿਟਾਇ ਕੈ ਪਰਉਪਕਾਰੁ ਕਰੇਇ ॥੩॥

aaugan sabh mittaae kai praupakaar karee |3|

He washes off all my demerits, and is so generous to me. ||3||

ਮਾਲੁ ਖਜਾਨਾ ਥੇਹੁ ਘਰੁ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਚਰਣ ਨਿਧਾਨ ॥

maal khajaanaa thehu ghar har ke charan nidhaan |

Wealth, treasures, and household are all just ruins; the Lord's Feet are the only treasure.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਾਚਕੁ ਦਰਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੁਧਨੋ ਮੰਗੈ ਦਾਨੁ ॥੪॥੪॥੧੭੨॥
