NARAAJ STANZA
ਨਚਿੰਤ ਭੂਪ ਚਿੰਤ ਧਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਇ ਆਇ ਹੈਂ ॥
nachint bhoop chint dhaam raam raae aae hain |
“O king! Forsake all anxiety and go to your home, the king Ram will come to your home
ਦੁਰੰਤ ਦੁਸਟ ਜੀਤ ਕੈ ਸੁ ਜੈਤ ਪਤ੍ਰ ਪਾਇ ਹੈਂ ॥
durant dusatt jeet kai su jait patr paae hain |
On conquering the tyrants he will botain the deed of victory from all
ਅਖਰਬ ਗਰਬ ਜੇ ਭਰੇ ਸੁ ਸਰਬ ਗਰਬ ਘਾਲ ਹੈਂ ॥
akharab garab je bhare su sarab garab ghaal hain |
“He will shatter the pride of egoists
ਫਿਰਾਇ ਛਤ੍ਰ ਸੀਸ ਪੈ ਛਤੀਸ ਛੋਣ ਪਾਲ ਹੈਂ ॥੩੯॥
firaae chhatr sees pai chhatees chhon paal hain |39|
Having royal canopy over his head, he will sustain all.39.
ਅਖੰਡ ਖੰਡ ਖੰਡ ਕੈ ਅਡੰਡ ਡੰਡ ਦੰਡ ਹੈਂ ॥
akhandd khandd khandd kai addandd ddandd dandd hain |
“He will repudiate the mighty ones and punish those, whom none has been able to punish upto this day
ਅਜੀਤ ਜੀਤ ਜੀਤ ਕੈ ਬਿਸੇਖ ਰਾਜ ਮੰਡ ਹੈਂ ॥
ajeet jeet jeet kai bisekh raaj mandd hain |
He will extend his domains by conquering the unconquerable and removing all the blemishes
ਕਲੰਕ ਦੂਰ ਕੈ ਸਭੈ ਨਿਸੰਕ ਲੰਕ ਘਾਇ ਹੈਂ ॥
kalank door kai sabhai nisank lank ghaae hain |
ਸੁ ਜੀਤ ਬਾਹ ਬੀਸ ਗਰਬ ਈਸ ਕੋ ਮਿਟਾਇ ਹੈਂ ॥੪੦॥
su jeet baah bees garab ees ko mittaae hain |40|
“He will definitely conquer Lanka and conquering Ravana, he will shatter his pride.40.
ਸਿਧਾਰ ਭੂਪ ਧਾਮ ਕੋ ਇਤੋ ਨ ਸੋਕ ਕੋ ਧਰੋ ॥
sidhaar bhoop dhaam ko ito na sok ko dharo |
ਬੁਲਾਇ ਬਿਪ ਛੋਣ ਕੇ ਅਰੰਭ ਜਗ ਕੋ ਕਰੋ ॥
bulaae bip chhon ke aranbh jag ko karo |
“O king! Go to your home forsaking the anxiety and begin the Yajna by calling the Brahmins.”
ਸੁਣੰਤ ਬੈਣ ਰਾਵ ਰਾਜਧਾਨੀਐ ਸਿਧਾਰੀਅੰ ॥
sunant bain raav raajadhaaneeai sidhaareean |
ਬੁਲਾਇ ਕੈ ਬਸਿਸਟ ਰਾਜਸੂਇ ਕੋ ਸੁਧਾਰੀਅੰ ॥੪੧॥
bulaae kai basisatt raajasooe ko sudhaareean |41|
Hearing these words, the king came to his capital and calling the sage Vasishtha, he determined to perform the Rajsuya Yajna.41.
ਅਨੇਕ ਦੇਸ ਦੇਸ ਕੇ ਨਰੇਸ ਬੋਲ ਕੈ ਲਏ ॥

ਦਿਜੇਸ ਬੇਸ ਬੇਸ ਕੇ ਛਿਤੇਸ ਧਾਮ ਆ ਗਏ ॥
dijes bes bes ke chhites dhaam aa ge |
He invited the kings of many countries and also the Brahmin of different garbs reached there.
ਅਨੇਕ ਭਾਤ ਮਾਨ ਕੈ ਦਿਵਾਨ ਬੋਲ ਕੈ ਲਏ ॥
anek bhaat maan kai divaan bol kai le |
ਸੁ ਜਗ ਰਾਜਸੂਇ ਕੋ ਅਰੰਭ ਤਾ ਦਿਨਾ ਭਏ ॥੪੨॥
su jag raajasooe ko aranbh taa dinaa bhe |42|
The king honoured all in many ways and the Rajsuya Yajna began.42.
ਸੁ ਪਾਦਿ ਅਰਘ ਆਸਨੰ ਅਨੇਕ ਧੂਪ ਦੀਪ ਕੈ ॥
su paad aragh aasanan anek dhoop deep kai |
ਪਖਾਰਿ ਪਾਇ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣੰ ਪ੍ਰਦਛਣਾ ਬਿਸੇਖ ਦੈ ॥
pakhaar paae brahamanan pradachhanaa bisekh dai |
Washing the feet of Brahmins and giving them their seats and buring the incenses and earthen lampas, the king circumambulated the Brahmins in a special manner.
ਕਰੋਰ ਕੋਰ ਦਛਨਾ ਦਿਜੇਕ ਏਕ ਕਉ ਦਈ ॥
karor kor dachhanaa dijek ek kau dee |
ਸੁ ਜਗ ਰਾਜਸੂਇ ਕੀ ਅਰੰਭ ਤਾ ਦਿਨਾ ਭਈ ॥੪੩॥
su jag raajasooe kee aranbh taa dinaa bhee |43|
He gave millions of coins to each Brahmin as religious gift and in this way, the Rajsuya Yajna begin.43.
ਨਟੇਸ ਦੇਸ ਦੇਸ ਕੇ ਅਨੇਕ ਗੀਤ ਗਾਵਹੀ ॥

ਅਨੰਤ ਦਾਨ ਮਾਨ ਲੈ ਬਿਸੇਖ ਸੋਭ ਪਾਵਹੀ ॥
anant daan maan lai bisekh sobh paavahee |
The comedians and minstrels from various countries began to sing songs and obtaining various kinds of honours they were well-seated in a special manner.
ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨਿ ਲੋਗ ਜੇ ਭਏ ਸੁ ਜਾਤ ਕਉਨ ਤੇ ਕਹੇ ॥

ਬਿਮਾਨ ਆਸਮਾਨ ਕੇ ਪਛਾਨ ਮੋਨ ਹੁਐ ਰਹੇ ॥੪੪॥
bimaan aasamaan ke pachhaan mon huai rahe |44|
The pleasure of the people is indescribable and there were so many air-vehicles in the sky that they could not be recognized.44.
ਹੁਤੀ ਜਿਤੀ ਅਪਛਰਾ ਚਲੀ ਸੁਵਰਗ ਛੋਰ ਕੈ ॥
hutee jitee apachharaa chalee suvarag chhor kai |
ਬਿਸੇਖ ਹਾਇ ਭਾਇ ਕੈ ਨਚੰਤ ਅੰਗ ਮੋਰ ਕੈ ॥
bisekh haae bhaae kai nachant ang mor kai |
The heavenly damsels, leaving the heaven, were turning their limbs in special postures and dancing.
ਬਿਅੰਤ ਭੂਪ ਰੀਝਹੀ ਅਨੰਤ ਦਾਨ ਪਾਵਹੀਂ ॥
biant bhoop reejhahee anant daan paavaheen |
ਬਿਲੋਕਿ ਅਛਰਾਨ ਕੋ ਅਪਛਰਾ ਲਜਾਵਹੀਂ ॥੪੫॥
bilok achharaan ko apachharaa lajaavaheen |45|
Many kings, in their pleasure were giving charities and seeing their beautiful queens, the heavenly damsel were feeling shy.45.
ਅਨੰਤ ਦਾਨ ਮਾਨ ਦੈ ਬੁਲਾਇ ਸੂਰਮਾ ਲਏ ॥
anant daan maan dai bulaae sooramaa le |
ਦੁਰੰਤ ਸੈਨ ਸੰਗ ਦੈ ਦਸੋ ਦਿਸਾ ਪਠੈ ਦਏ ॥
durant sain sang dai daso disaa patthai de |
Bestowing various types of gifts and honours, the king called many mighty heroes and sent them in all the ten directions alongwith he tough forces.
ਨਰੇਸ ਦੇਸ ਦੇਸ ਕੇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪੇਸ ਪਾਇ ਪਾਰੀਅੰ ॥

ਮਹੇਸ ਜੀਤ ਕੈ ਸਭੈ ਸੁ ਛਤ੍ਰਪਤ੍ਰ ਢਾਰੀਅੰ ॥੪੬॥

They conquered the kings of many countries and made them subservient to Dasrath and in this why, conquering the kings of the whole world, brought them before the Sovereign Dasrath.46.

ਜੀਤ ਜੀਤ ਨ੍ਰਿਪੰ ਨਰੇਸੁਰ ਸਤ੍ਰ ਮਿਤ੍ਰ ਬੁਲਾਇ ॥
jeet jeet nripan naresur satr mitr bulaae |
ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਆਦਿ ਬਿਸਿਸਟ ਤੇ ਲੈ ਕੈ ਸਭੈ ਰਿਖਰਾਇ ॥
bipr aad bisisatt te lai kai sabhai rikharaae |
After conquering the kinds, the king Dasrath called together the enemies as well as friends, the sages like Vashisht and the Brahmins.
ਕ੍ਰੁਧ ਜੁਧ ਕਰੇ ਘਨੇ ਅਵਗਾਹਿ ਗਾਹਿ ਸੁਦੇਸ ॥
krudh judh kare ghane avagaeh gaeh sudes |
ਆਨ ਆਨ ਅਵਧੇਸ ਕੇ ਪਗ ਲਾਗੀਅੰ ਅਵਨੇਸ ॥੪੭॥
aan aan avadhes ke pag laageean avanes |47|
Those who did not accept his supremacy, in great fury, he destroyed them and in this way the kings of all the earth became subservient to the king of Oudh.47.
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿਨ ਦੈ ਲਏ ਸਨਮਾਨ ਆਨ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ॥
bhaat bhaatin dai le sanamaan aan nripaal |
ਅਰਬ ਖਰਬਨ ਦਰਬ ਦੈ ਗਜ ਰਾਜ ਬਾਜ ਬਿਸਾਲ ॥
arab kharaban darab dai gaj raaj baaj bisaal |
All the kings were honoured in various ways they were given the wealth, elephants and horses equivalent to millions and billions of gold coin.
ਹੀਰ ਚੀਰਨ ਕੋ ਸਕੈ ਗਨ ਜਟਤ ਜੀਨ ਜਰਾਇ ॥
heer cheeran ko sakai gan jattat jeen jaraae |
ਭਾਉ ਭੂਖਨ ਕੋ ਕਹੈ ਬਿਧ ਤੇ ਨ ਜਾਤ ਬਤਾਇ ॥੪੮॥
bhaau bhookhan ko kahai bidh te na jaat bataae |48|
The garments studded with diamonds and the saddles of horses studded with gems cannot be enumerated and even Brahma cannot describe the grandeur of the ornaments.48.
ਪਸਮ ਬਸਤ੍ਰ ਪਟੰਬਰਾਦਿਕ ਦੀਏ ਭੂਪਨ ਭੂਪ ॥

ਰੂਪ ਅਰੂਪ ਸਰੂਪ ਸੋਭਿਤ ਕਉਨ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਕਰੂਪੁ ॥
roop aroop saroop sobhit kaun indr karoop |
The woolen and silken garments were given by the king and seeing the beauty of all the people it seemed that even Indra was ugly before them.
ਦੁਸਟ ਪੁਸਟ ਤ੍ਰਸੈ ਸਭੈ ਥਰਹਰਯੋ ਸੁਨਿ ਗਿਰਰਾਇ ॥
dusatt pusatt trasai sabhai tharaharayo sun giraraae |
ਕਾਟਿ ਕਾਟਿਨ ਦੈ ਮੁਝੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਬਾਟਿ ਬਾਟਿ ਲੁਟਾਇ ॥੪੯॥
kaatt kaattin dai mujhai nrip baatt baatt luttaae |49|
All the tyrants were frightened and even the Sumeru mountain trembled with fear that the king may not chop him and distribute his bits to the participants.49.
ਬੇਦ ਧੁਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਕੈ ਸਭੈ ਦਿਜ ਕੀਅਸ ਜਗ ਅਰੰਭ ॥
bed dhun kar kai sabhai dij keeas jag aranbh |
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿ ਬੁਲਾਇ ਹੋਮਤ ਰਿਤ ਜਾਨ ਅਸੰਭ ॥
bhaat bhaat bulaae homat rit jaan asanbh |
All the Brahmins started the Yajna by reciting the Vedic performed the havan (fire-worship) in accordance with the mantras.
ਅਧਿਕ ਮੁਨਿਬਰ ਜਉ ਕੀਯੋ ਬਿਧ ਪੂਰਬ ਹੋਮ ਬਨਾਇ ॥
adhik munibar jau keeyo bidh poorab hom banaae |
ਜਗ ਕੁੰਡਹੁ ਤੇ ਉਠੇ ਤਬ ਜਗ ਪੁਰਖ ਅਕੁਲਾਇ ॥੫੦॥
jag kunddahu te utthe tab jag purakh akulaae |50|
When many sages and hermits performed the havan in appropriate manner, then from the sacrificial pit arose the agitated sacrificial purushas.50.
ਖੀਰ ਪਾਤ੍ਰ ਕਢਾਇ ਲੈ ਕਰਿ ਦੀਨ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੇ ਆਨ ॥
kheer paatr kadtaae lai kar deen nrip ke aan |
ਭੂਪ ਪਾਇ ਪ੍ਰਸੰਨਿ ਭਯੋ ਜਿਮੁ ਦਾਰਦੀ ਲੈ ਦਾਨ ॥
bhoop paae prasan bhayo jim daaradee lai daan |
They had a milkpot in their hands, which they gave to the king. The kiing Dasrath was so much pleased on obtaining it, just as a pauper is pleased on receiving a gift.
ਚਤ੍ਰ ਭਾਗ ਕਰਯੋ ਤਿਸੈ ਨਿਜ ਪਾਨ ਲੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਰਾਇ ॥
chatr bhaag karayo tisai nij paan lai nriparaae |
ਏਕ ਏਕ ਦਯੋ ਦੁਹੂ ਤ੍ਰੀਅ ਏਕ ਕੋ ਦੁਇ ਭਾਇ ॥੫੧॥
ek ek dayo duhoo treea ek ko due bhaae |51|
The king divided it into four parts with his own hands and gave one part each to two queen and two parts to the third one.51.
ਗਰਭਵੰਤ ਭਈ ਤ੍ਰਿਯੋ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਛੀਰ ਕੋ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਨ ॥

ਤਾਹਿ ਰਾਖਤ ਭੀ ਭਲੋ ਦਸ ਦੋਇ ਮਾਸ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨ ॥
taeh raakhat bhee bhalo das doe maas pramaan |
The queens on drinking that milk, became pregnant and remained as such for twelve months.
ਮਾਸ ਤ੍ਰਿਉਦਸਮੋ ਚਢਯੋ ਤਬ ਸੰਤਨ ਹੇਤ ਉਧਾਰ ॥
maas triaudasamo chadtayo tab santan het udhaar |
ਰਾਵਣਾਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਟ ਭਏ ਜਗ ਆਨ ਰਾਮ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥੫੨॥
raavanaar pragatt bhe jag aan raam avataar |52|
At the beginning of the thirteenth month, Ram, the enemy of Ravan incarnated for the protection of the saints.52.
ਭਰਥ ਲਛਮਨ ਸਤ੍ਰੁਘਨ ਪੁਨਿ ਭਏ ਤੀਨ ਕੁਮਾਰ ॥
bharath lachhaman satrughan pun bhe teen kumaar |
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿਨ ਬਾਜੀਯੰ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਰਾਜ ਬਾਜਨ ਦੁਆਰ ॥
bhaat bhaatin baajeeyan nrip raaj baajan duaar |
Then the three princes named Bharat, Lakshman and Shatrughan were born and various kinds of musical instruments were played at the gate of Dasrath’s palace.
ਪਾਇ ਲਾਗ ਬੁਲਾਇ ਬਿਪਨ ਦੀਨ ਦਾਨ ਦੁਰੰਤਿ ॥

ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਨਾਸਤ ਹੋਹਿਗੇ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇ ਹੈਂ ਸਭ ਸੰਤ ॥੫੩॥
satru naasat hohige sukh paae hain sabh sant |53|
Bowing at the feet of Brahmins, he gave them innumerable gifts and all the people felt that now the enemies will be destroyed nad the saints will attain peace and comfort.53.
ਲਾਲ ਜਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਵੇਸਟ ਰਿਖਬਰ ਬਾਜ ਰਾਜ ਸਮਾਜ ॥
laal jaal pravesatt rikhabar baaj raaj samaaj |
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਿਨ ਦੇਤ ਭਯੋ ਦਿਜ ਪਤਨ ਕੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਰਾਜ ॥
bhaat bhaatin det bhayo dij patan ko nriparaaj |
Wearing the necklaces of diamonds and jewels, the sages are extending th royal glory and the king is presenting documents to the twice-born (dvijas) for gold and silver.
ਦੇਸ ਅਉਰ ਬਿਦੇਸ ਭੀਤਰ ਠਉਰ ਠਉਰ ਮਹੰਤ ॥

ਨਾਚ ਨਾਚ ਉਠੇ ਸਭੈ ਜਨੁ ਆਜ ਲਾਗ ਬਸੰਤ ॥੫੪॥
naach naach utthe sabhai jan aaj laag basant |54|
The chieftains of various places are exhibiting their delight and all the people are dancing like the frolicsome people in the spring season.54.
ਕਿੰਕਣੀਨ ਕੇ ਜਾਲ ਭੂਖਤਿ ਬਾਜ ਅਉ ਗਜਰਾਜ ॥
kinkaneen ke jaal bhookhat baaj aau gajaraaj |
ਸਾਜ ਸਾਜ ਦਏ ਦਿਜੇਸਨ ਆਜ ਕਉਸਲ ਰਾਜ ॥
saaj saaj de dijesan aaj kausal raaj |
The network of bells is seen decorate on the elephants and horses nd such-like elephants and horses have been presented by the kings to Dasrath, the husband of Kaushalya.
ਰੰਕ ਰਾਜ ਭਏ ਘਨੇ ਤਹ ਰੰਕ ਰਾਜਨ ਜੈਸ ॥

ਰਾਮ ਜਨਮਤ ਭਯੋ ਉਤਸਵ ਅਉਧ ਪੁਰ ਮੈ ਐਸ ॥੫੫॥
raam janamat bhayo utasav aaudh pur mai ais |55|
There has been festival in Ayodhya on the birth of ram that the beggars laden with gifts have become kinglike.55.
ਦੁੰਦਭ ਅਉਰ ਮ੍ਰਿਦੰਗ ਤੂਰ ਤੁਰੰਗ ਤਾਨ ਅਨੇਕ ॥
dundabh aaur mridang toor turang taan anek |
ਬੀਨ ਬੀਨ ਬਜੰਤ ਛੀਨ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ਬੀਨ ਬਿਸੇਖ ॥
been been bajant chheen prabeen been bisekh |
The tunes of drums and clarionets are being heard alongwith the sound of flutes and lyres.
ਝਾਝ ਬਾਰ ਤਰੰਗ ਤੁਰਹੀ ਭੇਰਨਾਦਿ ਨਿਯਾਨ ॥
jhaajh baar tarang turahee bheranaad niyaan |
ਮੋਹਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਗਿਰੇ ਧਰਾ ਪਰ ਸਰਬ ਬਯੋਮ ਬਿਵਾਨ ॥੫੬॥
mohi mohi gire dharaa par sarab bayom bivaan |56|
The sound of bells, walrus and kettledrums are audible and these sound are so attaractive that the air-vehicles of gods, being impressed are coming down to the earth.56.
ਜਤ੍ਰ ਤਤ੍ਰ ਬਿਦੇਸ ਦੇਸਨ ਹੋਤ ਮੰਗਲਚਾਰ ॥
jatr tatr bides desan hot mangalachaar |
ਬੈਠਿ ਬੈਠਿ ਕਰੈ ਲਗੇ ਸਬ ਬਿਪ੍ਰ ਬੇਦ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥
baitth baitth karai lage sab bipr bed bichaar |
Here, there and everywhere the songs of praise are being sung and the Brahmins have begun the discussion on Vedas.
ਧੂਪ ਦੀਪ ਮਹੀਪ ਗ੍ਰੇਹ ਸਨੇਹ ਦੇਤ ਬਨਾਇ ॥
dhoop deep maheep greh saneh det banaae |
ਫੂਲਿ ਫੂਲਿ ਫਿਰੈ ਸਭੈ ਗਣ ਦੇਵ ਦੇਵਨ ਰਾਇ ॥੫੭॥
fool fool firai sabhai gan dev devan raae |57|
Because of the incense and earthen lamps, the palace of the king has become so impressive that Indra alongwith gods are moving hither and thither in their delight.57.
ਆਜ ਕਾਜ ਭਏ ਸਬੈ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਬੋਲਤ ਬੈਨ ॥
aaj kaaj bhe sabai ih bhaat bolat bain |
ਭੂੰਮ ਭੂਰ ਉਠੀ ਜਯਤ ਧੁਨ ਬਾਜ ਬਾਜਤ ਗੈਨ ॥
bhoonm bhoor utthee jayat dhun baaj baajat gain |
All the people are saying that on that day all their wishes have been fulfilled. The earth is filled with shouts of victory and the musical instruments are being played in the sky.
ਐਨ ਐਨ ਧੁਜਾ ਬਧੀ ਸਭ ਬਾਟ ਬੰਦਨਵਾਰ ॥
ain ain dhujaa badhee sabh baatt bandanavaar |
ਲੀਪ ਲੀਪ ਧਰੇ ਮਲਯਾਗਰ ਹਾਟ ਪਾਟ ਬਜਾਰ ॥੫੮॥
leep leep dhare malayaagar haatt paatt bajaar |58|
There are small flags at all the places, there are greetings on all the paths and all shops and bazaars have been plastered with sandalwood.58.
ਸਾਜਿ ਸਾਜਿ ਤੁਰੰਗ ਕੰਚਨ ਦੇਤ ਦੀਨਨ ਦਾਨ ॥
saaj saaj turang kanchan det deenan daan |
ਮਸਤ ਹਸਤਿ ਦਏ ਅਨੇਕਨ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਦੁਰਦ ਸਮਾਨ ॥
masat hasat de anekan indr durad samaan |
The poor people are being given the horses decorated with gold, and many intoxicated elephants like Airavat (the elephant of Indra) are being given in charity.
ਕਿੰਕਣੀ ਕੇ ਜਾਲ ਭੂਖਤ ਦਏ ਸਯੰਦਨ ਸੁਧ ॥

ਗਾਇਨਨ ਕੇ ਪੁਰ ਮਨੋ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਆਵਤ ਬੁਧ ॥੫੯॥
gaaeinan ke pur mano ih bhaat aavat budh |59|
The horses studded with bells are being given as gifts it appears that in the city of singers, the prudence is coming by itself.59.
ਬਾਜ ਸਾਜ ਦਏ ਇਤੇ ਜਿਹ ਪਾਈਐ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਰ ॥
baaj saaj de ite jih paaeeai nahee paar |
ਦਯੋਸ ਦਯੋਸ ਬਢੈ ਲਗਯੋ ਰਨਧੀਰ ਰਾਮਵਤਾਰ ॥
dayos dayos badtai lagayo ranadheer raamavataar |
The innumerable horses and elephants were given as gifts by the king on one hand and Ram began to grow day by day on the other hand.
ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰਨ ਕੀ ਸਭੈ ਬਿਧ ਦੀਨ ਤਾਹਿ ਸੁਧਾਰ ॥
sasatr saasatran kee sabhai bidh deen taeh sudhaar |
ਅਸਟ ਦਯੋਸਨ ਮੋ ਗਏ ਲੈ ਸਰਬ ਰਾਮਕੁਮਾਰ ॥੬੦॥
asatt dayosan mo ge lai sarab raamakumaar |60|
He was taught all the required wisdom of the arms and religious texts and Ram learned everything within eight days (i.e. a very short period).60.
ਬਾਨ ਪਾਨ ਕਮਾਨ ਲੈ ਬਿਹਰੰਤ ਸਰਜੂ ਤੀਰ ॥
baan paan kamaan lai biharant sarajoo teer |
ਪੀਤ ਪੀਤ ਪਿਛੋਰ ਕਾਰਨ ਧੀਰ ਚਾਰਹੁੰ ਬੀਰ ॥
peet peet pichhor kaaran dheer chaarahun beer |
They began to roam on the banks of the Saryu river and all the four brother collected the yellow leaves and butterflies.
ਬੇਖ ਬੇਖ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਾਨ ਕੇ ਬਿਹਰੰਤ ਬਾਲਕ ਸੰਗ ॥
bekh bekh nripaan ke biharant baalak sang |
ਭਾਤਿ ਭਾਤਨ ਕੇ ਧਰੇ ਤਨ ਚੀਰ ਰੰਗ ਤਰੰਗ ॥੬੧॥
bhaat bhaatan ke dhare tan cheer rang tarang |61|
Seeing all the princes moving together, eh waves of Saryu exhibited many coloured garments.61.
ਐਸਿ ਬਾਤ ਭਈ ਇਤੈ ਉਹ ਓਰ ਬਿਸ੍ਵਾਮਿਤ੍ਰ ॥
ais baat bhee itai uh or bisvaamitr |
ਜਗ ਕੋ ਸੁ ਕਰਿਯੋ ਅਰੰਭਨ ਤੋਖਨਾਰਥ ਪਿਤ੍ਰ ॥
jag ko su kariyo aranbhan tokhanaarath pitr |
All this was going on this side and on the other side Vishwamitra began a Yajna for the worship of his manes.
ਹੋਮ ਕੀ ਲੈ ਬਾਸਨਾ ਉਠ ਧਾਤ ਦੈਤ ਦੁਰੰਤ ॥
hom kee lai baasanaa utth dhaat dait durant |
ਲੂਟ ਖਾਤ ਸਬੈ ਸਮਗਰੀ ਮਾਰ ਕੂਟਿ ਮਹੰਤ ॥੬੨॥
loott khaat sabai samagaree maar koott mahant |62|
Attracted by the incense of fire-worship (Havana), the demons would come to the sacrificial pit and would eat the materials of Yajna, snatching it from the performer.62.
ਲੂਟ ਖਾਤਹ ਵਿਖਯ ਜੇ ਤਿਨ ਪੈ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਬਸਾਇ ॥
loott khaatah vikhay je tin pai kachhoo na basaae |
ਤਾਕ ਅਉਧਹ ਆਇਯੋ ਤਬ ਰੋਸ ਕੈ ਮੁਨਿ ਰਾਇ ॥
taak aaudhah aaeiyo tab ros kai mun raae |
Seeing the loot of the materials of the fire-worship and feeling himself helpless, the great sage Vishwamitra came to Ayodhya in great anger.
ਆਇ ਭੂਪਤ ਕਉ ਕਹਾ ਸੁਤ ਦੇਹੁ ਮੋ ਕਉ ਰਾਮ ॥
aae bhoopat kau kahaa sut dehu mo kau raam |
ਨਾਤ੍ਰ ਤੋ ਕਉ ਭਸਮ ਕਰਿ ਹਉ ਆਜ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਠਾਮ ॥੬੩॥
naatr to kau bhasam kar hau aaj hee ih tthaam |63|
On reaching (Ayodhya) he said to the king. “Give me your son Ram for a few days, otherwise I shall reduce you to ashes on this very spot.”63.
ਕੋਪ ਦੇਖਿ ਮੁਨੀਸ ਕਉ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਪੂਤ ਤਾ ਸੰਗ ਦੀਨ ॥
kop dekh munees kau nrip poot taa sang deen |
ਜਗ ਮੰਡਲ ਕਉ ਚਲਯੋ ਲੈ ਤਾਹਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ॥
jag manddal kau chalayo lai taeh sang prabeen |
Visualising the fury of the sage, the king asked his son to accompany him and the sage accompanied by Ram went to begin the Yajna again.
ਏਕ ਮਾਰਗ ਦੂਰ ਹੈ ਇਕ ਨੀਅਰ ਹੈ ਸੁਨਿ ਰਾਮ ॥
ek maarag door hai ik neear hai sun raam |
ਰਾਹ ਮਾਰਤ ਰਾਛਸੀ ਜਿਹ ਤਾਰਕਾ ਗਨਿ ਨਾਮ ॥੬੪॥
raah maarat raachhasee jih taarakaa gan naam |64|
The sage said, “O Ram! listen, there are two routes, on the one the Yajna-spot is far away and on the other it is quit near, but on the later route there lives a demoness named Taraka, who kills the wayfares.64.
ਜਉਨ ਮਾਰਗ ਤੀਰ ਹੈ ਤਿਹ ਰਾਹ ਚਾਲਹੁ ਆਜ ॥
jaun maarag teer hai tih raah chaalahu aaj |
ਚਿਤ ਚਿੰਤ ਨ ਕੀਜੀਐ ਦਿਵ ਦੇਵ ਕੇ ਹੈਂ ਕਾਜ ॥
chit chint na keejeeai div dev ke hain kaaj |
Ram said, “Let us go by the small-distance-route, abandoning the anxiety, this work of killing the demons is the work of the gods.”
ਬਾਟਿ ਚਾਪੈ ਜਾਤ ਹੈਂ ਤਬ ਲਉ ਨਿਸਾਚਰ ਆਨ ॥
baatt chaapai jaat hain tab lau nisaachar aan |
ਜਾਹੁਗੇ ਕਤ ਰਾਮ ਕਹਿ ਮਗਿ ਰੋਕਿਯੋ ਤਜਿ ਕਾਨ ॥੬੫॥
jaahuge kat raam keh mag rokiyo taj kaan |65|
They began to move on that route and at the same time the demoness came and laid obstruction on the path saying, “O ram! how will you proceed and save yourself?”65.
ਦੇਖਿ ਰਾਮ ਨਿਸਾਚਰੀ ਗਹਿ ਲੀਨ ਬਾਨ ਕਮਾਨ ॥
dekh raam nisaacharee geh leen baan kamaan |
ਭਾਲ ਮਧ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰਿਯੋ ਸੁਰ ਤਾਨਿ ਕਾਨ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਨ ॥
bhaal madh prahaariyo sur taan kaan pramaan |
On seeing the demoness Tarka, ram held his bow and arrows in his hand, and pulling the cow discharged the arrow on her head.
ਬਾਨ ਲਾਗਤ ਹੀ ਗਿਰੀ ਬਿਸੰਭਾਰੁ ਦੇਹਿ ਬਿਸਾਲ ॥
baan laagat hee giree bisanbhaar dehi bisaal |
ਹਾਥਿ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਰਘੁਨਾਥ ਕੇ ਭਯੋ ਪਾਪਨੀ ਕੋ ਕਾਲ ॥੬੬॥
haath sree raghunaath ke bhayo paapanee ko kaal |66|
On being struck by the arrow, the heavy body of the demoness fell down and in this way, he end of the sinner came at the hands of Ram.66.
ਐਸ ਤਾਹਿ ਸੰਘਾਰ ਕੈ ਕਰ ਜਗ ਮੰਡਲ ਮੰਡ ॥
ais taeh sanghaar kai kar jag manddal mandd |
ਆਇਗੇ ਤਬ ਲਉ ਨਿਸਾਚਰ ਦੀਹ ਦੇਇ ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡ ॥
aaeige tab lau nisaachar deeh dee prachandd |
In this way, after killing the demoness, when the Yajna was started, two large-sized demons, Marich and Subahu, appeared there.
ਭਾਜਿ ਭਾਜਿ ਚਲੇ ਸਭੈ ਰਿਖ ਠਾਢ ਭੇ ਹਠਿ ਰਾਮ ॥
bhaaj bhaaj chale sabhai rikh tthaadt bhe hatth raam |
ਜੁਧ ਕ੍ਰੁਧ ਕਰਿਯੋ ਤਿਹੂੰ ਤਿਹ ਠਉਰ ਸੋਰਹ ਜਾਮ ॥੬੭॥
judh krudh kariyo tihoon tih tthaur sorah jaam |67|
Seeing them, all the sages ran away and only Ram persistently stood there and the war of those three was waged continuously for sixteen watches.67.
ਮਾਰ ਮਾਰ ਪੁਕਾਰ ਦਾਨਵ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਅਸਤ੍ਰ ਸੰਭਾਰਿ ॥
maar maar pukaar daanav sasatr asatr sanbhaar |
ਬਾਨ ਪਾਨ ਕਮਾਨ ਕਉ ਧਰਿ ਤਬਰ ਤਿਛ ਕੁਠਾਰਿ ॥
baan paan kamaan kau dhar tabar tichh kutthaar |
Holding firmly their arms and weapons, the demons began to shout “kill, kill” they caught hold of their axes, bows and arrows in their hands.
ਘੋਰਿ ਘੋਰਿ ਦਸੋ ਦਿਸਾ ਨਹਿ ਸੂਰਬੀਰ ਪ੍ਰਮਾਥ ॥

ਆਇ ਕੈ ਜੂਝੇ ਸਬੈ ਰਣ ਰਾਮ ਏਕਲ ਸਾਥ ॥੬੮॥
aae kai joojhe sabai ran raam ekal saath |68|
From all the ten directions, the demon warriors rushed forth for fighting only with Ram.68.

roop heen budh bal heenee mohi paradesan door te aaee |1|
I have no beauty, understanding or strength; I am a stranger, from far away. ||1||
ਨਾਹਿਨ ਦਰਬੁ ਨ ਜੋਬਨ ਮਾਤੀ ਮੋਹਿ ਅਨਾਥ ਕੀ ਕਰਹੁ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੨॥
naahin darab na joban maatee mohi anaath kee karahu samaaee |2|
I am not wealthy or youthful. I am an orphan - please, unite me with Yourself. ||2||
ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਭਈ ਬੈਰਾਗਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦਰਸਨ ਕਉ ਹਉ ਫਿਰਤ ਤਿਸਾਈ ॥੩॥
khojat khojat bhee bairaagan prabh darasan kau hau firat tisaaee |3|
Searching and searching, I have become a renunciate, free of desire. I wander around, searching for the Blessed Vision of God's Darshan. ||3||
ਦੀਨ ਦਇਆਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਮੇਰੀ ਜਲਨਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥੪॥੧॥੧੧੮॥
deen deaal kripaal prabh naanak saadhasang meree jalan bujhaaee |4|1|118|
God is Compassionate, and Merciful to the meek; O Nanak, in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, the fire of desire has been quenched. ||4||1||118||

The loving desire to meet my Beloved has arisen within my mind.
ਪਾਇ ਲਗਉ ਮੋਹਿ ਕਰਉ ਬੇਨਤੀ ਕੋਊ ਸੰਤੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਬਡਭਾਗੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
paae lgau mohi krau benatee koaoo sant milai baddabhaagee |1| rahaau |
I touch His Feet, and offer my prayer to Him. If only I had the great good fortune to meet the Saint. ||1||Pause||
ਮਨੁ ਅਰਪਉ ਧਨੁ ਰਾਖਉ ਆਗੈ ਮਨ ਕੀ ਮਤਿ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਗਲ ਤਿਆਗੀ ॥
man arpau dhan raakhau aagai man kee mat mohi sagal tiaagee |
I surrender my mind to Him; I place my wealth before Him. I totally renounce my selfish ways.
ਜੋ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕੀ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਸੁਨਾਵੈ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਫਿਰਉ ਤਿਸੁ ਪਿਛੈ ਵਿਰਾਗੀ ॥੧॥
jo prabh kee har kathaa sunaavai anadin firau tis pichhai viraagee |1|
One who teaches me the Sermon of the Lord God - night and day, I shall follow Him. ||1||
ਪੂਰਬ ਕਰਮ ਅੰਕੁਰ ਜਬ ਪ੍ਰਗਟੇ ਭੇਟਿਓ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਰਸਿਕ ਬੈਰਾਗੀ ॥
poorab karam ankur jab pragatte bhettio purakh rasik bairaagee |
When the seed of the karma of past actions sprouted, I met the Lord; He is both the Enjoyer and the Renunciate.
ਮਿਟਿਓ ਅੰਧੇਰੁ ਮਿਲਤ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੀ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਗੀ ॥੨॥੨॥੧੧੯॥
mittio andher milat har naanak janam janam kee soee jaagee |2|2|119|
My darkness was dispelled when I met the Lord. O Nanak, after being asleep for countless incarnations, I have awakened. ||2||2||119||

ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਧੂ ਸਰਣਿ ਗਹੁ ਪੂਰਨ ਰਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਹੀਅਰੇ ਸੰਗਿ ਰਾਖੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
mil saadhoo saran gahu pooran raam ratan heeare sang raakh |1| rahaau |
Meet the Holy Saint, take to His Sanctuary, and keep the perfect jewel of the Lord enshrined in your heart. ||1||Pause||
ਭ੍ਰਮ ਕੀ ਕੂਈ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਰਸ ਪੰਕਜ ਅਤਿ ਤੀਖੵਣ ਮੋਹ ਕੀ ਫਾਸ ॥
bhram kee kooee trisanaa ras pankaj at teekhayan moh kee faas |
Superstition is the well, thirst for pleasure is the mud, and emotional attachment is the noose, so tight around your neck.
ਕਾਟਨਹਾਰ ਜਗਤ ਗੁਰ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਚਰਨ ਕਮਲ ਤਾ ਕੇ ਕਰਹੁ ਨਿਵਾਸ ॥੧॥
kaattanahaar jagat gur gobid charan kamal taa ke karahu nivaas |1|
The only one who can cut this is the Guru of the World, the Lord of the Universe. So let yourself dwell at His Lotus Feet. ||1||
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਗੋਬਿੰਦ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਦੀਨਾ ਨਾਥ ਸੁਨਹੁ ਅਰਦਾਸਿ ॥

Bestow Your Mercy, O Lord of the Universe, O God, My Beloved, Master of the meek - please, listen to my prayer.
ਕਰੁ ਗਹਿ ਲੇਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੇ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਰਾਸਿ ॥੨॥੩॥੧੨੦॥

Take my hand, O Lord and Master of Nanak; my body and soul all belong to You. ||2||3||120||

ਆਸ ਪਿਆਸੀ ਚਿਤਵਉ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨੀ ਹੈ ਕੋਈ ਸੰਤੁ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ਨੇਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aas piaasee chitvau din rainee hai koee sant milaavai neraa |1| rahaau |
I think of Him, I hope and thirst for Him, day and night; is there any Saint who may bring Him near me? ||1||Pause||
ਸੇਵਾ ਕਰਉ ਦਾਸ ਦਾਸਨ ਕੀ ਅਨਿਕ ਭਾਂਤਿ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਰਉ ਨਿਹੋਰਾ ॥
sevaa krau daas daasan kee anik bhaant tis krau nihoraa |
I serve the slaves of His slaves; in so many ways, I beg of Him.
ਤੁਲਾ ਧਾਰਿ ਤੋਲੇ ਸੁਖ ਸਗਲੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਸ ਸਭੋ ਹੀ ਥੋਰਾ ॥੧॥
tulaa dhaar tole sukh sagale bin har daras sabho hee thoraa |1|
Setting them upon the scale, I have weighed all comforts and pleasures; without the Lord's Blessed Vision, they are all totally inadequate. ||1||
ਸੰਤ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਗਾਏ ਗੁਨ ਸਾਗਰ ਜਨਮ ਜਨਮ ਕੋ ਜਾਤ ਬਹੋਰਾ ॥
sant prasaad gaae gun saagar janam janam ko jaat bahoraa |
By the Grace of the Saints, I sing the Praises of the Ocean of virtue; after countless incarnations, I have been released.
ਆਨਦ ਸੂਖ ਭੇਟਤ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਨਮੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਤਾਰਥੁ ਸਫਲੁ ਸਵੇਰਾ ॥੨॥੪॥੧੨੧॥
aanad sookh bhettat har naanak janam kritaarath safal saveraa |2|4|121|
Meeting the Lord, Nanak has found peace and bliss; his life is redeemed, and prosperity dawns for him. ||2||4||121||

koee aisaa sant sehaj sukhadaataa mohi maarag dee bataaee |1| rahaau |
Is there any Saint, who can bestow such celestial peace, and show me the Way to Him? ||1||Pause||
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਲਖਿਆ ਵਿਚਿ ਪੜਦਾ ਹਉਮੈ ਪਾਈ ॥
antar alakh na jaaee lakhiaa vich parradaa haumai paaee |
The Unseen Lord is deep within the self; He cannot be seen; the curtain of egotism intervenes.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਭੋ ਜਗੁ ਸੋਇਆ ਇਹੁ ਭਰਮੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਉ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥
maaeaa mohi sabho jag soeaa ihu bharam kahahu kiau jaaee |1|
In emotional attachment to Maya, all the world is asleep. Tell me, how can this doubt be dispelled? ||1||
ਏਕਾ ਸੰਗਤਿ ਇਕਤੁ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਬਸਤੇ ਮਿਲਿ ਬਾਤ ਨ ਕਰਤੇ ਭਾਈ ॥
ekaa sangat ikat grihi basate mil baat na karate bhaaee |
The one lives together with the other in the same house, but they do not talk to one another, O Siblings of Destiny.
ਏਕ ਬਸਤੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਪੰਚ ਦੁਹੇਲੇ ਓਹ ਬਸਤੁ ਅਗੋਚਰ ਠਾਈ ॥੨॥
ek basat bin panch duhele oeh basat agochar tthaaee |2|
Without the one substance, the five are miserable; that substance is in the unapproachable place. ||2||
ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਤਿਨਿ ਦੀਆ ਤਾਲਾ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਗੁਰ ਸਉਪਾਈ ॥
jis kaa grihu tin deea taalaa kunjee gur saupaaee |
And the one whose home it is, has locked it up, and given the key to the Guru.
ਅਨਿਕ ਉਪਾਵ ਕਰੇ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੩॥
anik upaav kare nahee paavai bin satigur saranaaee |3|
You may make all sorts of efforts, but it cannot be obtained, without the Sanctuary of the True Guru. ||3||
ਜਿਨ ਕੇ ਬੰਧਨ ਕਾਟੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਤਿਨ ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥
jin ke bandhan kaatte satigur tin saadhasangat liv laaee |
Those whose bonds have been broken by the True Guru, enshrine love for the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy.
ਪੰਚ ਜਨਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਮੰਗਲੁ ਗਾਇਆ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਭਾਈ ॥੪॥
panch janaa mil mangal gaaeaa har naanak bhed na bhaaee |4|
The self-elect, the self-realized beings, meet together and sing the joyous songs of the Lord. Nanak, there is no difference between them, O Siblings of Destiny. ||4||
ਮੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਇ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਗੁਸਾਈ ॥
mere raam raae in bidh milai gusaaee |
This is how my Sovereign Lord King, the Lord of the Universe, is met;
ਸਹਜੁ ਭਇਆ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਠਾ ਮਿਲਿ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ਦੂਜਾ ॥੧॥੧੨੨॥
sehaj bheaa bhram khin meh naatthaa mil jotee jot samaaee |1| rahaau doojaa |1|122|
celestial bliss is attained in an instant, and doubt is dispelled. Meeting Him, my light merges in the Light. ||1||Second Pause||1||122||
