ਸਿਰੀਰਾਗੁ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Siree Raag, First Mehl:

ਭਲੀ ਸਰੀ ਜਿ ਉਬਰੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੁਈ ਘਰਾਹੁ ॥

bhalee saree ji ubaree haumai muee gharaahu |

It all worked out-I was saved, and the egotism within my heart was subdued.

ਦੂਤ ਲਗੇ ਫਿਰਿ ਚਾਕਰੀ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਵੇਸਾਹੁ ॥

doot lage fir chaakaree satigur kaa vesaahu |

The evil energies have been made to serve me, since I placed my faith in the True Guru.

ਕਲਪ ਤਿਆਗੀ ਬਾਦਿ ਹੈ ਸਚਾ ਵੇਪਰਵਾਹੁ ॥੧॥

kalap tiaagee baad hai sachaa veparavaahu |1|

I have renounced my useless schemes, by the Grace of the True, Carefree Lord. ||1||

ਮਨ ਰੇ ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਭਉ ਜਾਇ ॥

man re sach milai bhau jaae |

O mind, meeting with the True One, fear departs.

ਭੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਿਰਭਉ ਕਿਉ ਥੀਐ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

bhai bin nirbhau kiau theeai guramukh sabad samaae |1| rahaau |

Without the Fear of God, how can anyone become fearless? Become Gurmukh, and immerse yourself in the Shabad. ||1||Pause||

ਕੇਤਾ ਆਖਣੁ ਆਖੀਐ ਆਖਣਿ ਤੋਟਿ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

ketaa aakhan aakheeai aakhan tott na hoe |

How can we describe Him with words? There is no end to the descriptions of Him.

ਮੰਗਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਕੇਤੜੇ ਦਾਤਾ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਇ ॥

mangan vaale ketarre daataa eko soe |

There are so many beggars, but He is the only Giver.

ਜਿਸ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਪਰਾਣ ਹੈ ਮਨਿ ਵਸਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੨॥

jis ke jeea paraan hai man vasiai sukh hoe |2|

He is the Giver of the soul, and the praanaa, the breath of life; when He dwells within the mind, there is peace. ||2||

ਜਗੁ ਸੁਪਨਾ ਬਾਜੀ ਬਨੀ ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਖੇਲੁ ਖੇਲਾਇ ॥

jag supanaa baajee banee khin meh khel khelaae |

The world is a drama, staged in a dream. In a moment, the play is played out.

ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਏਕਸੇ ਵਿਜੋਗੀ ਉਠਿ ਜਾਇ ॥

sanjogee mil ekase vijogee utth jaae |

Some attain union with the Lord, while others depart in separation.

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਣਾ ਸੋ ਥੀਐ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕਰਣਾ ਜਾਇ ॥੩॥

jo tis bhaanaa so theeai avar na karanaa jaae |3|

Whatever pleases Him comes to pass; nothing else can be done. ||3||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਸਤੁ ਵੇਸਾਹੀਐ ਸਚੁ ਵਖਰੁ ਸਚੁ ਰਾਸਿ ॥

guramukh vasat vesaaheeai sach vakhar sach raas |

The Gurmukhs purchase the Genuine Article. The True Merchandise is purchased with the True Capital.

ਜਿਨੀ ਸਚੁ ਵਣੰਜਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਪੂਰੇ ਸਾਬਾਸਿ ॥

jinee sach vananjiaa gur poore saabaas |

Those who purchase this True Merchandise through the Perfect Guru are blessed.

ਨਾਨਕ ਵਸਤੁ ਪਛਾਣਸੀ ਸਚੁ ਸਉਦਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੪॥੧੧॥

naanak vasat pachhaanasee sach saudaa jis paas |4|11|

O Nanak, one who stocks this True Merchandise shall recognize and realize the Genuine Article. ||4||11||

Siree Raag, First Mehl:

ਧਾਤੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਫੁਨਿ ਧਾਤੁ ਕਉ ਸਿਫਤੀ ਸਿਫਤਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

dhaat milai fun dhaat kau sifatee sifat samaae |

As metal merges with metal, those who chant the Praises of the Lord are absorbed into the Praiseworthy Lord.

ਲਾਲੁ ਗੁਲਾਲੁ ਗਹਬਰਾ ਸਚਾ ਰੰਗੁ ਚੜਾਉ ॥

laal gulaal gahabaraa sachaa rang charraau |

Like the poppies, they are dyed in the deep crimson color of Truthfulness.

ਸਚੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੰਤੋਖੀਆ ਹਰਿ ਜਪਿ ਏਕੈ ਭਾਇ ॥੧॥

sach milai santokheea har jap ekai bhaae |1|

Those contented souls who meditate on the Lord with single-minded love, meet the True Lord. ||1||

ਭਾਈ ਰੇ ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਰੇਣੁ ॥

bhaaee re sant janaa kee ren |

O Siblings of Destiny, become the dust of the feet of the humble Saints.

ਸੰਤ ਸਭਾ ਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਈਐ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਧੇਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

sant sabhaa gur paaeeai mukat padaarath dhen |1| rahaau |

In the Society of the Saints, the Guru is found. He is the Treasure of Liberation, the Source of all good fortune. ||1||Pause||

ਊਚਉ ਥਾਨੁ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਾ ਊਪਰਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ॥

aoochau thaan suhaavanaa aoopar mehal muraar |

Upon that Highest Plane of Sublime Beauty, stands the Mansion of the Lord.

ਸਚੁ ਕਰਣੀ ਦੇ ਪਾਈਐ ਦਰੁ ਘਰੁ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਿਆਰਿ ॥

sach karanee de paaeeai dar ghar mehal piaar |

By true actions, this human body is obtained, and the door within ourselves which leads to the Mansion of the Beloved, is found.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਸਮਝਾਈਐ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੨॥

guramukh man samajhaaeeai aatam raam beechaar |2|

The Gurmukhs train their minds to contemplate the Lord, the Supreme Soul. ||2||

ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਕਰਮ ਕਮਾਈਅਹਿ ਆਸ ਅੰਦੇਸਾ ਹੋਇ ॥

tribidh karam kamaaeeeh aas andesaa hoe |

By actions committed under the influence of the three qualities, hope and anxiety are produced.

ਕਿਉ ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਤ੍ਰਿਕੁਟੀ ਛੁਟਸੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥

kiau gur bin trikuttee chhuttasee sehaj miliai sukh hoe |

Without the Guru, how can anyone be released from these three qualities? Through intuitive wisdom, we meet with Him and find peace.

ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਨਦਰਿ ਕਰੇ ਮਲੁ ਧੋਇ ॥੩॥

nij ghar mehal pachhaaneeai nadar kare mal dhoe |3|

Within the home of the self, the Mansion of His Presence is realized when He bestows His Glance of Grace and washes away our pollution. ||3||

ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਉਤਰੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਕਿਉ ਘਰ ਵਾਸੁ ॥

bin gur mail na utarai bin har kiau ghar vaas |

Without the Guru, this pollution is not removed. Without the Lord, how can there be any homecoming?

ਏਕੋ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰੀਐ ਅਵਰ ਤਿਆਗੈ ਆਸ ॥

eko sabad veechaareeai avar tiaagai aas |

Contemplate the One Word of the Shabad, and abandon other hopes.

ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਖਿ ਦਿਖਾਈਐ ਹਉ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਸੁ ॥੪॥੧੨॥

naanak dekh dikhaaeeai hau sad balihaarai jaas |4|12|

O Nanak, I am forever a sacrifice to the one who beholds, and inspires others to behold Him. ||4||12||

ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਦੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਮੁਠੀ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥

dhrig jeevan dohaaganee mutthee doojai bhaae |

The life of the discarded bride is cursed. She is deceived by the love of duality.

ਕਲਰ ਕੇਰੀ ਕੰਧ ਜਿਉ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਕਿਰਿ ਢਹਿ ਪਾਇ ॥

kalar keree kandh jiau ahinis kir dteh paae |

Like a wall of sand, day and night, she crumbles, and eventually, she breaks down altogether.

ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨਾ ਥੀਐ ਪਿਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥੧॥

bin sabadai sukh naa theeai pir bin dookh na jaae |1|

Without the Word of the Shabad, peace does not come. Without her Husband Lord, her suffering does not end. ||1||

ਮੁੰਧੇ ਪਿਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਕਿਆ ਸੀਗਾਰੁ ॥

mundhe pir bin kiaa seegaar |

O soul-bride, without your Husband Lord, what good are your decorations?

ਦਰਿ ਘਰਿ ਢੋਈ ਨ ਲਹੈ ਦਰਗਹ ਝੂਠੁ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

dar ghar dtoee na lahai daragah jhootth khuaar |1| rahaau |

In this world, you shall not find any shelter; in the world hereafter, being false, you shall suffer. ||1||Pause||

ਆਪਿ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ਨ ਭੁਲਈ ਸਚਾ ਵਡ ਕਿਰਸਾਣੁ ॥

aap sujaan na bhulee sachaa vadd kirasaan |

The True Lord Himself knows all; He makes no mistakes. He is the Great Farmer of the Universe.

ਪਹਿਲਾ ਧਰਤੀ ਸਾਧਿ ਕੈ ਸਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇ ਦਾਣੁ ॥

pahilaa dharatee saadh kai sach naam de daan |

First, He prepares the ground, and then He plants the Seed of the True Name.

ਨਉ ਨਿਧਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਏਕੁ ਕਰਮਿ ਪਵੈ ਨੀਸਾਣੁ ॥੨॥

nau nidh upajai naam ek karam pavai neesaan |2|

The nine treasures are produced from Name of the One Lord. By His Grace, we obtain His Banner and Insignia. ||2||

ਗੁਰ ਕਉ ਜਾਣਿ ਨ ਜਾਣਈ ਕਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਚਜੁ ਅਚਾਰੁ ॥

gur kau jaan na jaanee kiaa tis chaj achaar |

Some are very knowledgeable, but if they do not know the Guru, then what is the use of their lives?

ਅੰਧੁਲੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਅੰਧ ਗੁਬਾਰੁ ॥

andhulai naam visaariaa manamukh andh gubaar |

The blind have forgotten the Naam, the Name of the Lord. The self-willed manmukhs are in utter darkness.

ਆਵਣੁ ਜਾਣੁ ਨ ਚੁਕਈ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮੈ ਹੋਇ ਖੁਆਰੁ ॥੩॥

aavan jaan na chukee mar janamai hoe khuaar |3|

Their comings and goings in reincarnation do not end; through death and rebirth, they are wasting away. ||3||

ਚੰਦਨੁ ਮੋਲਿ ਅਣਾਇਆ ਕੁੰਗੂ ਮਾਂਗ ਸੰਧੂਰੁ ॥

chandan mol anaaeaa kungoo maang sandhoor |

The bride may buy sandalwood oil and perfumes, and apply them in great quantities to her hair;

ਚੋਆ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਬਹੁ ਘਣਾ ਪਾਨਾ ਨਾਲਿ ਕਪੂਰੁ ॥

choaa chandan bahu ghanaa paanaa naal kapoor |

she may sweeten her breath with betel leaf and camphor,

ਜੇ ਧਨ ਕੰਤਿ ਨ ਭਾਵਈ ਤ ਸਭਿ ਅਡੰਬਰ ਕੂੜੁ ॥੪॥

je dhan kant na bhaavee ta sabh addanbar koorr |4|

but if this bride is not pleasing to her Husband Lord, then all these trappings are false. ||4||

ਸਭਿ ਰਸ ਭੋਗਣ ਬਾਦਿ ਹਹਿ ਸਭਿ ਸੀਗਾਰ ਵਿਕਾਰ ॥

sabh ras bhogan baad heh sabh seegaar vikaar |

Her enjoyment of all pleasures is futile, and all her decorations are corrupt.

ਜਬ ਲਗੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਨ ਭੇਦੀਐ ਕਿਉ ਸੋਹੈ ਗੁਰਦੁਆਰਿ ॥

jab lag sabad na bhedeeai kiau sohai guraduaar |

Until she has been pierced through with the Shabad, how can she look beautiful at Guru's Gate?

ਨਾਨਕ ਧੰਨੁ ਸੁਹਾਗਣੀ ਜਿਨ ਸਹ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਿਆਰੁ ॥੫॥੧੩॥

naanak dhan suhaaganee jin seh naal piaar |5|13|

O Nanak, blessed is that fortunate bride, who is in love with her Husband Lord. ||5||13||
