In this way, Vishnu manifested for the ninth time in order to enact the wonderful play.

ਅਬ ਉਚਰੋ ਮੈ ਕਥਾ ਚਿਰਾਨੀ ॥
ab ucharo mai kathaa chiraanee |
ਜਿਮ ਉਪਜ︀ਯੋ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਸੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੀ ॥
jim upajayo brahamaa sur giaanee |
Now I describe that ancient story as to how the knowledgeable Brahma was bron.
ਚਤੁਰਾਨਨ ਅਘ ਓਘਨ ਹਰਤਾ ॥
chaturaanan agh oghan harataa |
ਉਪਜ︀ਯੋ ਸਕਲ ਸ੍ਰਿਸਟਿ ਕੋ ਕਰਤਾ ॥੧॥
aupajayo sakal srisatt ko karataa |1|
The four-headed Brahma was born as the destroyer of sins and the creator of all the universe.1.
ਜਬ ਜਬ ਬੇਦ ਨਾਸ ਹੋਇ ਜਾਹੀ ॥
jab jab bed naas hoe jaahee |
ਤਬ ਤਬ ਪੁਨਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਾਹੀ ॥
tab tab pun brahamaa pragattaahee |
Whenever the knowledge of Vedas is destroyed, Brahma is then manifested.
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਬਿਸਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬਪੁ ਧਰਾ ॥
taa te bisan braham bap dharaa |
ਚਤੁਰਾਨਨ ਕਰ ਜਗਤ ਉਚਰਾ ॥੨॥
chaturaanan kar jagat ucharaa |2|
For this purpose Vishnu manifested himself ad Brahma and he was known as “Chaturanan” (four-faced) in the world.2.
ਜਬ ਹੀ ਬਿਸਨ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬਪੁ ਧਰਾ ॥
jab hee bisan braham bap dharaa |
ਤਬ ਸਬ ਬੇਦ ਪ੍ਰਚੁਰ ਜਗਿ ਕਰਾ ॥
tab sab bed prachur jag karaa |
When Vishnu manifested himself as Brahma, he propagated the doctrines of the Vedas in the world.
ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਕਲ ਬਨਾਏ ॥
saasatr sinmrit sakal banaae |
ਜੀਵ ਜਗਤ ਕੇ ਪੰਥਿ ਲਗਾਏ ॥੩॥
jeev jagat ke panth lagaae |3|
He composed Shastras, Smritis and gave a life-discipline to the beings of the world.3.
ਜੇ ਜੇ ਹੁਤੇ ਅਘਨ ਕੇ ਕਰਤਾ ॥
je je hute aghan ke karataa |
ਤੇ ਤੇ ਭਏ ਪਾਪ ਤੇ ਹਰਤਾ ॥
te te bhe paap te harataa |
Those people who were there to perform sinful action, after getting the knowledge. From the Vedas, they became the remover of sins.
ਪਾਪ ਕਰਮੁ ਕਹ ਪ੍ਰਗਟਿ ਦਿਖਾਏ ॥
paap karam keh pragatt dikhaae |
ਧਰਮ ਕਰਮ ਸਬ ਜੀਵ ਚਲਾਏ ॥੪॥
dharam karam sab jeev chalaae |4|
The sinful actions were explained and all the beings became absorbed in the actions of Dharma ( righteousness).4.
ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਭਯੋ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਅਵਤਾਰਾ ॥
eih bidh bhayo braham avataaraa |
ਸਬ ਪਾਪਨ ਕੋ ਮੇਟਨਹਾਰਾ ॥
sab paapan ko mettanahaaraa |
In this way, the Brahma incarnation manifested, who is the remover of all sins.
ਪ੍ਰਜਾ ਲੋਕੁ ਸਬ ਪੰਥ ਚਲਾਏ ॥
prajaa lok sab panth chalaae |
ਪਾਪ ਕਰਮ ਤੇ ਸਬੈ ਹਟਾਏ ॥੫॥
paap karam te sabai hattaae |5|
All the subjects began to tread the path of Dharma and abandoned the sinful actions.5.

ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਪ੍ਰਜਾ ਪਵਿਤ੍ਰ ਕਰ ਧਰਿਯੋ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਅਵਤਾਰ ॥
eih bidh prajaa pavitr kar dhariyo braham avataar |
In this way, the Brahma incarnation manifested for purifying he subjects
ਧਰਮ ਕਰਮ ਲਾਗੇ ਸਬੈ ਪਾਪ ਕਰਮ ਕਹ ਡਾਰਿ ॥੬॥
dharam karam laage sabai paap karam keh ddaar |6|
And all the beings began to perform the righteous actions, forsaking the sinful action.6.

The tenth incarnation of Vishnu is Brahma, who established the righteous actions in the world.
ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਬਿਸਨ ਮਹਿ ਭੇਦੁ ਨ ਲਹੀਐ ॥
braham bisan meh bhed na laheeai |
ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਭੀਤਰ ਇਮ ਕਹੀਐ ॥੭॥
saasatr sinmrit bheetar im kaheeai |7|
It hath been said in Shastras and Smrities that there is no difference between Brahma and Vishnu.7.

The Guru's Word is eternal and everlasting.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਕਟੀ ਜਮ ਫਾਸੀ ॥
gur kai bachan kattee jam faasee |
The Guru's Word cuts away the noose of Death.
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਜੀਅ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥
gur kaa bachan jeea kai sang |
The Guru's Word is always with the soul.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਰਚੈ ਰਾਮ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥੧॥
gur kai bachan rachai raam kai rang |1|
Through the Guru's Word, one is immersed in the Love of the Lord. ||1||
ਜੋ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਸੁ ਮਨ ਕੈ ਕਾਮਿ ॥
jo gur deea su man kai kaam |
Whatever the Guru gives, is useful to the mind.
ਸੰਤ ਕਾ ਕੀਆ ਸਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਮਾਨਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sant kaa keea sat kar maan |1| rahaau |
Whatever the Saint does - accept that as True. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਅਟਲ ਅਛੇਦ ॥
gur kaa bachan attal achhed |
The Guru's Word is infallible and unchanging.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਕਟੇ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਭੇਦ ॥
gur kai bachan katte bhram bhed |
Through the Guru's Word, doubt and prejudice are dispelled.
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਕਤਹੁ ਨ ਜਾਇ ॥
gur kaa bachan katahu na jaae |
The Guru's Word never goes away;
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਇ ॥੨॥
gur kai bachan har ke gun gaae |2|
through the Guru's Word, we sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||2||
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਜੀਅ ਕੈ ਸਾਥ ॥
gur kaa bachan jeea kai saath |
The Guru's Word accompanies the soul.
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਅਨਾਥ ਕੋ ਨਾਥ ॥
gur kaa bachan anaath ko naath |
The Guru's Word is the Master of the masterless.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਨਰਕਿ ਨ ਪਵੈ ॥
gur kai bachan narak na pavai |
The Guru's Word saves one from falling into hell.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਰਸਨਾ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਰਵੈ ॥੩॥
gur kai bachan rasanaa amrit ravai |3|
Through the Guru's Word, the tongue savors the Ambrosial Nectar. ||3||
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਬਚਨੁ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਸੰਸਾਰਿ ॥
gur kaa bachan paragatt sansaar |
The Guru's Word is revealed in the world.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਬਚਨਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਹਾਰਿ ॥
gur kai bachan na aavai haar |
Through the Guru's Word, no one suffers defeat.
ਜਿਸੁ ਜਨ ਹੋਏ ਆਪਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲ ॥
jis jan hoe aap kripaal |
O Nanak, the True Guru is always kind and compassionate,
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਦਾ ਦਇਆਲ ॥੪॥੫॥੭੪॥
naanak satigur sadaa deaal |4|5|74|
Unto those whom the Lord Himself has blessed with His Mercy. ||4||5||74||
ਗਉੜੀ ਗੁਆਰੇਰੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Gauree Gwaarayree, Fifth Mehl:
ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤਾ ਮਾਟੀ ਤੇ ਰਤਨੁ ॥
jin keetaa maattee te ratan |
He makes jewels out of the dust,
ਗਰਭ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਖਿਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਕਰਿ ਜਤਨੁ ॥
garabh meh raakhiaa jin kar jatan |
and He managed to preserve you in the womb.
ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਨੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
jin deenee sobhaa vaddiaaee |
He has given you fame and greatness;
ਤਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਉ ਆਠ ਪਹਰ ਧਿਆਈ ॥੧॥
tis prabh kau aatth pehar dhiaaee |1|
meditate on that God, twenty-four hours a day. ||1||
ਰਮਈਆ ਰੇਨੁ ਸਾਧ ਜਨ ਪਾਵਉ ॥
rameea ren saadh jan paavau |
O Lord, I seek the dust of the feet of the Holy.
ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਅਪੁਨਾ ਖਸਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur mil apunaa khasam dhiaavau |1| rahaau |
Meeting the Guru, I meditate on my Lord and Master. ||1||Pause||
ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤਾ ਮੂੜ ਤੇ ਬਕਤਾ ॥
jin keetaa moorr te bakataa |
He transformed me, the fool, into a fine speaker,
ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਤਾ ਬੇਸੁਰਤ ਤੇ ਸੁਰਤਾ ॥
jin keetaa besurat te surataa |
and He made the unconscious become conscious;
ਜਿਸੁ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਨਵੈ ਨਿਧਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
jis parasaad navai nidh paaee |
by His Grace, I have obtained the nine treasures.
ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੨॥
so prabh man te bisarat naahee |2|
May I never forget that God from my mind. ||2||
ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਆ ਨਿਥਾਵੇ ਕਉ ਥਾਨੁ ॥
jin deea nithaave kau thaan |
He has given a home to the homeless;
ਜਿਨਿ ਦੀਆ ਨਿਮਾਨੇ ਕਉ ਮਾਨੁ ॥
jin deea nimaane kau maan |
He has given honor to the dishonored.
ਜਿਨਿ ਕੀਨੀ ਸਭ ਪੂਰਨ ਆਸਾ ॥
jin keenee sabh pooran aasaa |
He has fulfilled all desires;
ਸਿਮਰਉ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਨਿ ਸਾਸ ਗਿਰਾਸਾ ॥੩॥
simrau din rain saas giraasaa |3|
remember Him in meditation, day and night, with every breath and every morsel of food. ||3||
ਜਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਸਿਲਕ ਕਾਟੀ ॥
jis prasaad maaeaa silak kaattee |
By His Grace, the bonds of Maya are cut away.
ਗੁਰ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਟੀ ॥
gur prasaad amrit bikh khaattee |
By Guru's Grace, the bitter poison has become Ambrosial Nectar.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਇਸ ਤੇ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥
kahu naanak is te kichh naahee |
Says Nanak, I cannot do anything;
ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰੇ ਕਉ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ॥੪॥੬॥੭੫॥
raakhanahaare kau saalaahee |4|6|75|
I praise the Lord, the Protector. ||4||6||75||

In His Sanctuary, there is no fear or sorrow.
ਉਸ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਹੋਗੁ ॥
aus te baahar kachhoo na hog |
Without Him, nothing at all can be done.
ਤਜੀ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਬਲ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਿਕਾਰ ॥
tajee siaanap bal budh bikaar |
I have renounced clever tricks, power and intellectual corruption.
ਦਾਸ ਅਪਨੇ ਕੀ ਰਾਖਨਹਾਰ ॥੧॥
daas apane kee raakhanahaar |1|
God is the Protector of His servant. ||1||
ਜਪਿ ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਰਾਮ ਰਾਮ ਰੰਗਿ ॥
jap man mere raam raam rang |
Meditate, O my mind, on the Lord, Raam, Raam, with love.
ਘਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਤੇਰੈ ਸਦ ਸੰਗਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ghar baahar terai sad sang |1| rahaau |
Within your home, and beyond it, He is always with you. ||1||Pause||
ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਟੇਕ ਮਨੈ ਮਹਿ ਰਾਖੁ ॥
tis kee ttek manai meh raakh |
Keep His Support in your mind.
ਗੁਰ ਕਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖੁ ॥
gur kaa sabad amrit ras chaakh |
Taste the ambrosial essence, the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਅਵਰਿ ਜਤਨ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਉਨ ਕਾਜ ॥
avar jatan kahahu kaun kaaj |
Of what use are other efforts?
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਰਾਖੈ ਆਪਿ ਲਾਜ ॥੨॥
kar kirapaa raakhai aap laaj |2|
Showing His Mercy, the Lord Himself protects our honor. ||2||
ਕਿਆ ਮਾਨੁਖ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਿਆ ਜੋਰੁ ॥
kiaa maanukh kahahu kiaa jor |
What is the human? What power does he have?
ਝੂਠਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾ ਸਭੁ ਸੋਰੁ ॥
jhootthaa maaeaa kaa sabh sor |
All the tumult of Maya is false.
ਕਰਣ ਕਰਾਵਨਹਾਰ ਸੁਆਮੀ ॥
karan karaavanahaar suaamee |
Our Lord and Master is the One who acts, and causes others to act.
ਸਗਲ ਘਟਾ ਕੇ ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ॥੩॥
sagal ghattaa ke antarajaamee |3|
He is the Inner-knower, the Searcher of all hearts. ||3||
ਸਰਬ ਸੁਖਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਏਹੁ ॥
sarab sukhaa sukh saachaa ehu |
Of all comforts, this is the true comfort.
ਗੁਰ ਉਪਦੇਸੁ ਮਨੈ ਮਹਿ ਲੇਹੁ ॥
gur upades manai meh lehu |
Keep the Guru's Teachings in your mind.
ਜਾ ਕਉ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
jaa kau raam naam liv laagee |
Those who bear love for the Name of the Lord
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੋ ਧੰਨੁ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥੪॥੭॥੭੬॥
kahu naanak so dhan vaddabhaagee |4|7|76|
- says Nanak, they are blessed, and very fortunate. ||4||7||76||
