ਭੁਜੰਗ ਪ੍ਰਯਾਤ ਛੰਦ ॥

BHUJANG PRAYAAT STANZA

ਜਯੋ ਜਾਮਦਗਨੰ ਦਿਜੰ ਆਵਤਾਰੀ ॥

jayo jaamadaganan dijan aavataaree |

ਭਯੋ ਰੇਣੁਕਾ ਤੇ ਕਵਾਚੀ ਕੁਠਾਰੀ ॥

bhayo renukaa te kavaachee kutthaaree |

Hail, hail to the incarnation-like sage Yamadagni, through whose wife Renuka was born the wearer of armour and carrier of axe (that is Parashurama)

ਧਰਿਯੋ ਛਤ੍ਰੀਯਾ ਪਾਤ ਕੋ ਕਾਲ ਰੂਪੰ ॥

dhariyo chhatreeyaa paat ko kaal roopan |

ਹਨ︀ਯੋ ਜਾਇ ਜਉਨੈ ਸਹੰਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਭੂਪੰ ॥੫॥

hanayo jaae jaunai sahansaasatr bhoopan |5|

He manifested himself as death for the Kshatriyas and destroyed the king named Sahasrabadhu.5.

ਕਹਾ ਗੰਮ ਏਤੀ ਕਥਾ ਸਰਬ ਭਾਖਉ ॥

kahaa gam etee kathaa sarab bhaakhau |

ਕਥਾ ਬ੍ਰਿਧ ਤੇ ਥੋਰੀਐ ਬਾਤ ਰਾਖਉ ॥

kathaa bridh te thoreeai baat raakhau |

I have not the requisite wisdom to describe the whole story, therefore fearing lest it may not become voluminous, I say it very briefly:

ਭਰੇ ਗਰਬ ਛਤ੍ਰੀ ਨਰੇਸੰ ਅਪਾਰੰ ॥

bhare garab chhatree naresan apaaran |

ਤਿਨੈ ਨਾਸ ਕੋ ਪਾਣਿ ਧਾਰਿਯੋ ਕੁਠਾਰੰ ॥੬॥

tinai naas ko paan dhaariyo kutthaaran |6|

The Kshatriya king had been intoxicated with pride and in order to destroy them, Parashurama held up the axe in his hand.6.

ਹੁਤੀ ਨੰਦਨੀ ਸਿੰਧ ਜਾ ਕੀ ਸੁਪੁਤ੍ਰੀ ॥

hutee nandanee sindh jaa kee suputree |

ਤਿਸੈ ਮਾਗ ਹਾਰਿਯੋ ਸਹੰਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਛਤ੍ਰੀ ॥

tisai maag haariyo sahansaasatr chhatree |

Nandini, the wish-fulfilling cow like the daughter of Yamadagni and the Kshatriya Sahasrabahu had got tired in begging it from the sage.

ਲੀਯੋ ਛੀਨ ਗਾਯੰ ਹਤਿਯੋ ਰਾਮ ਤਾਤੰ ॥

leeyo chheen gaayan hatiyo raam taatan |

ਤਿਸੀ ਬੈਰ ਕੀਨੇ ਸਬੈ ਭੂਪ ਪਾਤੰ ॥੭॥

tisee bair keene sabai bhoop paatan |7|

Ultimately, he snatched away the cow and killed Yamadagni and in order to wreak his vengeance, Parashurama destroyed all the Kshatriya kings.7.

ਗਈ ਬਾਲ ਤਾ ਤੇ ਲੀਯੋ ਸੋਧ ਤਾ ਕੋ ॥

gee baal taa te leeyo sodh taa ko |

ਹਨਿਯੋ ਤਾਤ ਮੇਰੋ ਕਹੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਾ ਕੋ ॥

haniyo taat mero kaho naam vaa ko |

Form the very childhood Parashurama had been quite inquisitive in his mind about the identity of the killer of his father

ਸਹੰਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਭੂਪੰ ਸੁਣਿਯੋ ਸ੍ਰਉਣ ਨਾਮੰ ॥

sahansaasatr bhoopan suniyo sraun naaman |

ਗਹੇ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਅਸਤ੍ਰੰ ਚਲਿਯੋ ਤਉਨ ਠਾਮੰ ॥੮॥

gahe sasatr asatran chaliyo taun tthaaman |8|

And when he came to know that it was the king Sahasrabahu, he moved towards his place with his arms and weapons.8.

ਕਹੋ ਰਾਜ ਮੇਰੋ ਹਨਿਯੋ ਤਾਤ ਕੈਸੇ ॥

kaho raaj mero haniyo taat kaise |

Parashurama said to the king, “O king how hast thou killed my father?

ਅਬੈ ਜੁਧ ਜੀਤੋ ਹਨੋ ਤੋਹਿ ਤੈਸੇ ॥

abai judh jeeto hano tohi taise |

Now I want to wage war with you in order to kill you”

ਕਹਾ ਮੂੜ ਬੈਠੋ ਸੁ ਅਸਤ੍ਰੰ ਸੰਭਾਰੋ ॥

kahaa moorr baittho su asatran sanbhaaro |

ਚਲੋ ਭਾਜ ਨਾ ਤੋ ਸਬੈ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਡਾਰੋ ॥੯॥

chalo bhaaj naa to sabai sasatr ddaaro |9|

He also said, “O fool, hold your weapons, otherwise forsaking them, run away from this place.”9.

ਸੁਣੇ ਬੋਲ ਬੰਕੇ ਭਰਿਯੋ ਭੂਪ ਕੋਪੰ ॥

sune bol banke bhariyo bhoop kopan |

ਉਠਿਯੋ ਰਾਜ ਸਰਦੂਲ ਲੈ ਪਾਣਿ ਧੋਪੰ ॥

autthiyo raaj saradool lai paan dhopan |

Hearing these ironical words, the king was filled with fury and holding his weapons in his hands, got up like a lion.

ਹਠਿਯੋ ਖੇਤਿ ਖੂਨੀ ਦਿਜੰ ਖੇਤ੍ਰ ਹਾਯੋ ॥

hatthiyo khet khoonee dijan khetr haayo |

ਚਹੇ ਆਜ ਹੀ ਜੁਧ ਮੋ ਸੋ ਮਚਾਯੋ ॥੧੦॥

chahe aaj hee judh mo so machaayo |10|

He came to the arena of battle with determination, knowing that the Brahmin Parashurama was desirous of fighting with him on the same day.10.

ਧਏ ਸੂਰ ਸਰਬੰ ਸੁਨੇ ਬੈਨ ਰਾਜੰ ॥

dhe soor saraban sune bain raajan |

ਚੜਿਯੋ ਕ੍ਰੁਧ ਜੁਧੰ ਸ੍ਰਜੇ ਸਰਬ ਸਾਜੰ ॥

charriyo krudh judhan sraje sarab saajan |

Hearing the furious words of the king, his warriors in great ire, decorating themselves (with their weapon) marched forward

ਗਦਾ ਸੈਹਥੀ ਸੂਲ ਸੇਲੰ ਸੰਭਾਰੀ ॥

gadaa saihathee sool selan sanbhaaree |

ਚਲੇ ਜੁਧ ਕਾਜੰ ਬਡੇ ਛਤ੍ਰਧਾਰੀ ॥੧੧॥

chale judh kaajan badde chhatradhaaree |11|

Holding firmly their tridents, lances, maces etc., the great canopied kings moved forward for waging war.11.

NARAAJ STANZA

ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਣ ਪਾਣ ਧਾਰਿ ਕੈ ॥

ਚਲੇ ਬਲੀ ਪੁਕਾਰਿ ਕੈ ॥

chale balee pukaar kai |

Holding their swords in their hands, the mighty warriors marched forward with loud shouts

ਸੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਾਰਿ ਭਾਖਹੀ ॥

su maar maar bhaakhahee |

ਸਰੋਘ ਸ੍ਰੋਣ ਚਾਖਹੀ ॥੧੨॥

sarogh sron chaakhahee |12|

They uttered “kill, kill” and their arrows were drinking blood.12.

ਸੰਜੋਇ ਸੈਹਥੀਨ ਲੈ ॥

sanjoe saihatheen lai |

ਚੜੇ ਸੁ ਬੀਰ ਰੋਸ ਕੈ ॥

charre su beer ros kai |

Wearing their armour and holding their daggers, the warriors in great ire moved forward.

ਚਟਾਕ ਚਾਬਕੰ ਉਠੇ ॥

chattaak chaabakan utthe |

ਸਹੰਸ੍ਰ ਸਾਇਕੰ ਬੁਠੈ ॥੧੩॥

sahansr saaeikan butthai |13|

The blows of whips horses produced knocking sounds and thousands of arrows flew out (from the bows).13.

ਭਏ ਏਕ ਠਉਰੇ ॥

ਸਬੈ ਸੂਰ ਦਉਰੇ ॥

sabai soor daure |

All the warriors ran and gathered at one place.

ਲਯੋ ਘੇਰਿ ਰਾਮੰ ॥

layo gher raaman |

ਘਟਾ ਸੂਰ ਸ︀ਯਾਮੰ ॥੧੪॥

ghattaa soor sayaaman |14|

And the besieged Parashurama, just as the clouds besiege the sun.14.

ਕਮਾਣੰ ਕੜੰਕੇ ॥

kamaanan karranke |

ਭਏ ਨਾਦ ਬੰਕੇ ॥

bhe naad banke |

With the crackling of bows a queer sound was produced,

ਘਟਾ ਜਾਣਿ ਸਿਆਹੰ ॥

ghattaa jaan siaahan |

ਚੜਿਓ ਤਿਉ ਸਿਪਾਹੰ ॥੧੫॥

charrio tiau sipaahan |15|

And the army swarmed like the dark clouds.15.

ਭਏ ਨਾਦ ਬੰਕੇ ॥

bhe naad banke |

ਸੁ ਸੇਲੰ ਧਮੰਕੇ ॥

su selan dhamanke |

With the clattering of the daggers, a queer sound was produced,

ਗਜਾ ਜੂਹ ਗਜੇ ॥

gajaa jooh gaje |

ਸੁਭੰ ਸੰਜ ਸਜੇ ॥੧੬॥

subhan sanj saje |16|

The elephants began to roar in groups and bedecked with armour, the warriors seemed impressive.16.

ਚਹੂੰ ਓਰ ਢੂਕੇ ॥

chahoon or dtooke |

ਗਜੰ ਜੂਹ ਝੂਕੇ ॥

gajan jooh jhooke |

Gathering from all the four sides, the groups of elephants began a fight.

ਸਰੰ ਬ੍ਰਯੂਹ ਛੂਟੇ ॥

saran brayooh chhootte |

ਰਿਪੰ ਸੀਸ ਫੂਟੇ ॥੧੭॥

The volleys of arrows were shot and the heads of the kings were shattered. 17.

ਉਠੇ ਨਾਦ ਭਾਰੀ ॥

ਰਿਸੇ ਛਤ੍ਰਧਾਰੀ ॥

rise chhatradhaaree |

The frightful sound emanated and all the kings got infuriated.

ਘਿਰਿਯੋ ਰਾਮ ਸੈਨੰ ॥

ghiriyo raam sainan |

ਸਿਵੰ ਜੇਮ ਮੈਨੰ ॥੧੮॥

Parashurama was besieged by the army like Shiva encircled by the forces of Cupid.18.

ਰਣੰ ਰੰਗ ਰਤੇ ॥

ਤ੍ਰਸੇ ਤੇਜ ਤਤੇ ॥

All being absorbed and dyed with the dye of war, feared the glory of others.

ਉਠੀ ਸੈਣ ਧੂਰੰ ॥

ਰਹਿਯੋ ਗੈਣ ਪੂਰੰ ॥੧੯॥

rahiyo gain pooran |19|

So much dust arose by (the movement of the) army that the sky was filled with dust.19.

ਘਣੇ ਢੋਲ ਬਜੇ ॥

ghane dtol baje |

ਮਹਾ ਬੀਰ ਗਜੇ ॥

mahaa beer gaje |

The drums resounded violently and the mighty warriors began to roar.

ਮਨੋ ਸਿੰਘ ਛੁਟੇ ॥

mano singh chhutte |

ਹਿਮੰ ਬੀਰ ਜੁਟੇ ॥੨੦॥

himan beer jutte |20|

The warriors were fighting each other like the freely roaming lions.20.

ਕਰੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਾਰੰ ॥

karai maar maaran |

ਬਕੈ ਬਿਕਰਾਰੰ ॥

bakai bikaraaran |

With the shouts of “kill, kill”, the warriors were uttering dreadful words.

ਗਿਰੈ ਅੰਗ ਭੰਗੰ ॥

girai ang bhangan |

ਦਵੰ ਜਾਨ ਦੰਗੰ ॥੨੧॥

davan jaan dangan |21|

The chopped limbs of the warriors are falling and it appeared that there is fire on all the four sides.21.

ਗਏ ਛੂਟ ਅਸਤ੍ਰੰ ॥

ge chhoott asatran |

ਭਜੈ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਅਸਤ੍ਰੰ ॥

bhajai hvai nriasatran |

The weapons began to fall from the hands and the warriors began to run away empty-handed.

ਖਿਲੈ ਸਾਰ ਬਾਜੀ ॥

khilai saar baajee |

ਤੁਰੇ ਤੁੰਦ ਤਾਜੀ ॥੨੨॥

The horses were neighing and were running hither and thither with swiftness.22.

ਭੁਜਾ ਠੋਕਿ ਬੀਰੰ ॥

bhujaa tthok beeran |

ਕਰੇ ਘਾਇ ਤੀਰੰ ॥

kare ghaae teeran |

The warriors are wounding the enemy by showering their arrows they were also patting their arms.

ਨੇਜੇ ਗਡ ਗਾਢੇ ॥

neje gadd gaadte |

ਮਚੇ ਬੈਰ ਬਾਢੇ ॥੨੩॥

mache bair baadte |23|

The warriors by planting their daggers, increasing their inimical intentions, are waging a terrible war. 23

ਘਣੈ ਘਾਇ ਪੇਲੇ ॥

ghanai ghaae pele |

ਮਨੋ ਫਾਗ ਖੇਲੇ ॥

mano faag khele |

Many wounds are being inflicted and the wounded warriors appear to be playing Holi

ਕਰੀ ਬਾਣ ਬਰਖਾ ॥

karee baan barakhaa |

ਭਏ ਜੀਤ ਕਰਖਾ ॥੨੪॥

bhe jeet karakhaa |24|

Showering their arrows, all are desirous of the victory.24.

ਗਿਰੇ ਅੰਤ ਘੂਮੰ ॥

gire ant ghooman |

ਮਨੋ ਬ੍ਰਿਛ ਝੂਮੰ ॥

mano brichh jhooman |

ਟੂਟੇ ਸਸਤ੍ਰ ਅਸਤ੍ਰੰ ॥

ਭਜੇ ਹੁਐ ਨਿਰ ਅਸਤ੍ਰੰ ॥੨੫॥

bhaje huai nir asatran |25|

The warriors are roaming and falling like the swinging, after the breaking of their weapons and becoming trees armless, the warriors sped away.25.

ਜਿਤੇ ਸਤ੍ਰੁ ਆਏ ॥

jite satru aae |

ਤਿਤੇ ਰਾਮ ਘਾਏ ॥

tite raam ghaae |

ਚਲੇ ਭਾਜਿ ਸਰਬੰ ॥

chale bhaaj saraban |

ਭਯੋ ਦੂਰ ਗਰਬੰ ॥੨੬॥

bhayo door garaban |26|

All the enemies who came in front of him, Parashurama killed them all. Ultimately all of them ran away and their pride was shattered.26.

ਚੋਜੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਵਿੰਦਾ ਚੋਜੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਪਿਆਰਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਮੇਰਾ ਚੋਜੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

chojee mere govindaa chojee mere piaariaa har prabh meraa chojee jeeo |

Playful is my Lord of the Universe; playful is my Beloved. My Lord God is wondrous and playful.

ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਕਾਨੑੁ ਉਪਾਇਦਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਵਿਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਗੋਪੀ ਖੋਜੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

har aape kaanau upaaeidaa mere govidaa har aape gopee khojee jeeo |

The Lord Himself created Krishna, O my Lord of the Universe; the Lord Himself is the milkmaids who seek Him.

ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਸਭ ਘਟ ਭੋਗਦਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਵਿੰਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਰਸੀਆ ਭੋਗੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

har aape sabh ghatt bhogadaa mere govindaa aape raseea bhogee jeeo |

The Lord Himself enjoys every heart, O my Lord of the Universe; He Himself is the Ravisher and the Enjoyer.

ਹਰਿ ਸੁਜਾਣੁ ਨ ਭੁਲਈ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਵਿੰਦਾ ਆਪੇ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਜੋਗੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥

har sujaan na bhulee mere govindaa aape satigur jogee jeeo |1|

The Lord is All-knowing - He cannot be fooled, O my Lord of the Universe. He is the True Guru, the Yogi. ||1||

ਆਪੇ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਦਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਵਿਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਖੇਲੈ ਬਹੁ ਰੰਗੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

aape jagat upaaeidaa mere govidaa har aap khelai bahu rangee jeeo |

He Himself created the world, O my Lord of the Universe; the Lord Himself plays in so many ways!

ਇਕਨਾ ਭੋਗ ਭੋਗਾਇਦਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਵਿੰਦਾ ਇਕਿ ਨਗਨ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਨੰਗ ਨੰਗੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

eikanaa bhog bhogaaeidaa mere govindaa ik nagan fireh nang nangee jeeo |

Some enjoy enjoyments, O my Lord of the Universe, while others wander around naked, the poorest of the poor.

ਆਪੇ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਦਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਵਿਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਸਭ ਮੰਗੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

aape jagat upaaeidaa mere govidaa har daan devai sabh mangee jeeo |

He Himself created the world, O my Lord of the Universe; the Lord gives His gifts to all who beg for them.

ਭਗਤਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਆਧਾਰੁ ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਵਿੰਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਕਥਾ ਮੰਗਹਿ ਹਰਿ ਚੰਗੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੨॥

bhagataa naam aadhaar hai mere govindaa har kathaa mangeh har changee jeeo |2|

His devotees have the Support of the Naam, O my Lord of the Universe; they beg for the sublime sermon of the Lord. ||2||

ਹਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਾਇਦਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਵਿੰਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਾ ਲੋਚ ਮਨਿ ਪੂਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

har aape bhagat karaaeidaa mere govindaa har bhagataa loch man pooree jeeo |

The Lord Himself inspires His devotees to worship Him, O my Lord of the Universe; the Lord fulfills the desires of the minds of His devotees.

ਆਪੇ ਜਲਿ ਥਲਿ ਵਰਤਦਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਵਿਦਾ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਨਹੀ ਦੂਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

aape jal thal varatadaa mere govidaa rav rahiaa nahee dooree jeeo |

He Himself is permeating and pervading the waters and the lands, O my Lord of the Universe; He is All-pervading - He is not far away.

ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਵਿਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਭਰਪੂਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥

har antar baahar aap hai mere govidaa har aap rahiaa bharapooree jeeo |

The Lord Himself is within the self, and outside as well, O my Lord of the Universe; the Lord Himself is fully pervading everywhere.

ਹਰਿ ਆਤਮ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਸਾਰਿਆ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਵਿੰਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਆਪਿ ਹਦੂਰੀ ਜੀਉ ॥੩॥

har aatam raam pasaariaa mere govindaa har vekhai aap hadooree jeeo |3|

The Lord, the Supreme Soul, is diffused everywhere, O my Lord of the Universe. The Lord Himself beholds all; His Immanent Presence is pervading everywhere. ||3||

ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਵਾਜਾ ਪਉਣੁ ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਵਿੰਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਆਪਿ ਵਜਾਏ ਤਿਉ ਵਾਜੈ ਜੀਉ ॥

har antar vaajaa paun hai mere govindaa har aap vajaae tiau vaajai jeeo |

O Lord, the music of the praanic wind is deep within, O my Lord of the Universe; as the Lord Himself plays this music, so does it vibrate and resound.

ਹਰਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਵਿੰਦਾ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਗਾਜੈ ਜੀਉ ॥

har antar naam nidhaan hai mere govindaa gurasabadee har prabh gaajai jeeo |

O Lord, the treasure of the Naam is deep within, O my Lord of the Universe; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, the Lord God is revealed.

ਆਪੇ ਸਰਣਿ ਪਵਾਇਦਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਵਿੰਦਾ ਹਰਿ ਭਗਤ ਜਨਾ ਰਾਖੁ ਲਾਜੈ ਜੀਉ ॥

aape saran pavaaeidaa mere govindaa har bhagat janaa raakh laajai jeeo |

He Himself leads us to enter His Sanctuary, O my Lord of the Universe; the Lord preserves the honor of His devotees.

ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ਮਿਲੁ ਸੰਗਤੀ ਮੇਰੇ ਗੋਵਿੰਦਾ ਜਨ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਸਿਧਿ ਕਾਜੈ ਜੀਉ ॥੪॥੪॥੩੦॥੬੮॥

vaddabhaagee mil sangatee mere govindaa jan naanak naam sidh kaajai jeeo |4|4|30|68|

By great good fortune, one joins the Sangat, the Holy Congregation, O my Lord of the Universe; O servant Nanak, through the Naam, one's affairs are resolved. ||4||4||30||68||
