ਤਬ ਭੂਪਤ ਤਹ ਦੂਤ ਪਠਾਏ ॥

tab bhoopat teh doot patthaae |

The king (Ajai Singh) sent his messengers (to king Tilak) and (Sanaudhi Brahmin).

ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤ ਸਕਲ ਦਿਜ ਕੀਏ ਰਿਝਾਏ ॥

tripat sakal dij kee rijhaae |

Who satisfied all the incoming Brahmin.

ਅਸਮੇਧ ਅਰੁ ਅਸੁਮੇਦ ਹਾਰਾ ॥

asamedh ar asumed haaraa |

(These messengers saidJ “Asumedh and Asumedhan,

ਭਾਜ ਪਰੇ ਘਰ ਤਾਕ ਤਿਹਾਰਾ ॥੧॥੨੮੭॥

bhaaj pare ghar taak tihaaraa |1|287|

“Have run and hid themselves in thy home.1.287.

ਕੈ ਦਿਜ ਬਾਧ ਦੇਹੁ ਦੁਐ ਮੋਹੂ ॥

kai dij baadh dehu duai mohoo |

“O Brahmin, either bind and deliver them to us

ਨਾਤਰ ਧਰੋ ਦੁਜਨਵਾ ਤੋਹੂ ॥

naatar dharo dujanavaa tohoo |

“O thou shalt be considered like them

ਕਰਿਓ ਨ ਪੂਜਾ ਦੇਉ ਨ ਦਾਨਾ ॥

kario na poojaa deo na daanaa |

“Thou shalt neither be worshipped nor any gift be given to thee

ਤੋ ਕੋ ਦੁਖ ਦੇਵੋ ਦਿਜ ਨਾਨਾ ॥੨॥੨੮੮॥

to ko dukh devo dij naanaa |2|288|

“Thou shalt then be given various types of sufferings.2.288.

ਕਹਾ ਮ੍ਰਿਤਕ ਦੁਇ ਕੰਠ ਲਗਾਏ ॥

kahaa mritak due kantth lagaae |

“Why hast thou hugged these two dead ones to thy bosom?

ਦੇਹੁ ਹਮੈ ਤੁਮ ਕਹਾ ਲਜਾਏ ॥

dehu hamai tum kahaa lajaae |

“Give them back to us Why art thou hesitating?

ਜਉ ਦੁਐ ਏ ਤੁਮ ਦੇਹੁ ਨ ਮੋਹੂ ॥

jau duai e tum dehu na mohoo |

“If thou dost not return both of them to me,

ਤਉ ਹਮ ਸਿਖ ਨ ਹੋਇ ਹੈ ਤੋਹੂ ॥੩॥੨੮੯॥

tau ham sikh na hoe hai tohoo |3|289|

“Then we shall not be thy disciples.”3.289.

ਤਬ ਦਿਜ ਪ੍ਰਾਤ ਕੀਓ ਇਸਨਾਨਾ ॥

tab dij praat keeo isanaanaa |

Then the Sanaudhi Brahmin got up early in the morning and took bath.

ਦੇਵ ਪਿਤ੍ਰ ਤੋਖੇ ਬਿਧ ਨਾਨਾ ॥

dev pitr tokhe bidh naanaa |

He worshipped in various ways the gods and manes.

ਚੰਦਨ ਕੁੰਕਮ ਖੋਰ ਲਗਾਏ ॥

chandan kunkam khor lagaae |

Then he put the frontal marks of sandal and saffron on his forehead.

ਚਲ ਕਰ ਰਾਜ ਸਭਾ ਮੈ ਆਏ ॥੪॥੨੯੦॥

chal kar raaj sabhaa mai aae |4|290|

After that he walked upto his court.4.290.

ਦਿਜੋ ਬਾਚ ॥

dijo baach |

The Brahmin said:

ਹਮਰੀ ਵੈ ਨ ਪਰੈ ਦੁਐ ਡੀਠਾ ॥

hamaree vai na parai duai ddeetthaa |

“Neither have I seen both of them,

ਹਮਰੀ ਆਇ ਪਰੈ ਨਹੀ ਪੀਠਾ ॥

hamaree aae parai nahee peetthaa |

“Nor have they taken shelter.

ਝੂਠ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਜਿਨ ਤੋਹਿ ਸੁਨਾਈ ॥

jhootth kahiyo jin tohi sunaaee |

“Whosoever has given thee news about them, he hath told a lie,

ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ਰਾਜਨ ਕੇ ਰਾਈ ॥੧॥੨੯੧॥

mahaaraaj raajan ke raaee |1|291|

“O Emperor, the king of kings.1.291.

ਮਹਾਰਾਜ ਰਾਜਨ ਕੇ ਰਾਜਾ ॥

mahaaraaj raajan ke raajaa |

“O Emperor, the king of kings,

ਨਾਇਕ ਅਖਲ ਧਰਣ ਸਿਰ ਤਾਜਾ ॥

naaeik akhal dharan sir taajaa |

“O the hero of all the universe and Master of the earth

ਹਮ ਬੈਠੇ ਤੁਮ ਦੇਹੁ ਅਸੀਸਾ ॥

ham baitthe tum dehu aseesaa |

“While sitting here, I am giving blessings to thee,

ਤੁਮ ਰਾਜਾ ਰਾਜਨ ਕੇ ਈਸਾ ॥੨॥੨੯੨॥

tum raajaa raajan ke eesaa |2|292|

“Thou , O monarch, art the Lord of the kings.”2.292.

ਰਾਜਾ ਬਾਚ ॥

raajaa baach |

The king said:

ਭਲਾ ਚਹੋ ਆਪਨ ਜੋ ਸਬਹੀ ॥

bhalaa chaho aapan jo sabahee |

“If thou art thy own well-wisher,

ਵੈ ਦੁਇ ਬਾਧ ਦੇਹੁ ਮੁਹਿ ਅਬਹੀ ॥

vai due baadh dehu muhi abahee |

“Bind both of them and give them immediately to me

ਸਬਹੀ ਕਰੋ ਅਗਨ ਕਾ ਭੂਜਾ ॥

sabahee karo agan kaa bhoojaa |

“I shall make all of them the food of fire,

ਤੁਮਰੀ ਕਰਉ ਪਿਤਾ ਜਿਉ ਪੂਜਾ ॥੩॥੨੯੩॥

tumaree krau pitaa jiau poojaa |3|293|

“And worship thee as my father.”3.293.

ਜੋ ਨ ਪਰੈ ਵੈ ਭਾਜ ਤਿਹਾਰੇ ॥

jo na parai vai bhaaj tihaare |

“If they have not run and concealed themselves in thy house,

ਕਹੇ ਲਗੋ ਤੁਮ ਆਜ ਹਮਾਰੇ ॥

kahe lago tum aaj hamaare |

“Then thou obeyest me today

ਹਮ ਤੁਮ ਕੋ ਬ੍ਰਿੰਜਨਾਦ ਬਨਾਵੈ ॥

ham tum ko brinjanaad banaavai |

“I shall prepare very tasteful food for thee,

ਹਮ ਤੁਮ ਵੈ ਤੀਨੋ ਮਿਲ ਖਾਵੈ ॥੪॥੨੯੪॥

ham tum vai teeno mil khaavai |4|294|

“Which they, thou and me, all shall eat together.”4.294.

ਦਿਜ ਸੁਨ ਬਾਤ ਚਲੇ ਸਭ ਧਾਮਾ ॥

dij sun baat chale sabh dhaamaa |

Hearing these words of the king, all the Brahmins went to their homes,

ਪੂਛੇ ਭ੍ਰਾਤ ਸੁਪੂਤ ਪਿਤਾਮਾ ॥

poochhe bhraat supoot pitaamaa |

And asked their brothers, sons and elders:

ਬਾਧ ਦੇਹੁ ਤਉ ਛੂਟੇ ਧਰਮਾ ॥

baadh dehu tau chhootte dharamaa |

“If they are bound and given, then we lose our Dharma,

ਭੋਜ ਭੁਜੇ ਤਉ ਛੂਟੇ ਕਰਮਾ ॥੫॥੨੯੫॥

bhoj bhuje tau chhootte karamaa |5|295|

“If we eat their food, then we pollute our Karmas.”5.295.

ਯਹਿ ਰਜੀਆ ਕਾ ਪੁਤ ਮਹਾਬਲ ॥

yeh rajeea kaa put mahaabal |

“This son of the maid-servant is a mighty warriors,

ਜਿਨ ਜੀਤੇ ਛਤ੍ਰੀ ਗਨ ਦਲਮਲ ॥

jin jeete chhatree gan dalamal |

“Who hath conquered and mashed the Kshatriya forces.

ਛਤ੍ਰਾਪਨ ਆਪਨ ਬਲ ਲੀਨਾ ॥

chhatraapan aapan bal leenaa |

“He hath acquired his kingdom with his own might,

ਇਨ ਕੋ ਕਾਢਿ ਧਰਨ ਤੇ ਦੀਨਾ ॥੬॥੨੯੬॥

ein ko kaadt dharan te deenaa |6|296|

“And hath ousted them from his bundaries.”6.296.

Gauree, First Mehl:

ਪਉਣੈ ਪਾਣੀ ਅਗਨੀ ਕਾ ਮੇਲੁ ॥

paunai paanee aganee kaa mel |

The union of air, water and fire

ਚੰਚਲ ਚਪਲ ਬੁਧਿ ਕਾ ਖੇਲੁ ॥

chanchal chapal budh kaa khel |

the body is the play-thing of the fickle and unsteady intellect.

ਨਉ ਦਰਵਾਜੇ ਦਸਵਾ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥

nau daravaaje dasavaa duaar |

It has nine doors, and then there is the Tenth Gate.

ਬੁਝੁ ਰੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਏਹੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੧॥

bujh re giaanee ehu beechaar |1|

Reflect upon this and understand it, O wise one. ||1||

ਕਥਤਾ ਬਕਤਾ ਸੁਨਤਾ ਸੋਈ ॥

kathataa bakataa sunataa soee |

The Lord is the One who speaks, teaches and listens.

ਆਪੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੇ ਸੁ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਹੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

aap beechaare su giaanee hoee |1| rahaau |

One who contemplates his own self is truly wise. ||1||Pause||

ਦੇਹੀ ਮਾਟੀ ਬੋਲੈ ਪਉਣੁ ॥

dehee maattee bolai paun |

The body is dust; the wind speaks through it.

ਬੁਝੁ ਰੇ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਮੂਆ ਹੈ ਕਉਣੁ ॥

bujh re giaanee mooaa hai kaun |

Understand, O wise one, who has died.

ਮੂਈ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਬਾਦੁ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੁ ॥

mooee surat baad ahankaar |

Awareness, conflict and ego have died,

ਓਹੁ ਨ ਮੂਆ ਜੋ ਦੇਖਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

ohu na mooaa jo dekhanahaar |2|

but the One who sees does not die. ||2||

ਜੈ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਤਟਿ ਤੀਰਥ ਜਾਹੀ ॥

jai kaaran tatt teerath jaahee |

For the sake of it, you journey to sacred shrines and holy rivers;

ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥ ਘਟ ਹੀ ਮਾਹੀ ॥

ratan padaarath ghatt hee maahee |

but this priceless jewel is within your own heart.

ਪੜਿ ਪੜਿ ਪੰਡਿਤੁ ਬਾਦੁ ਵਖਾਣੈ ॥

parr parr panddit baad vakhaanai |

The Pandits, the religious scholars, read and read endlessly; they stir up arguments and controversies,

ਭੀਤਰਿ ਹੋਦੀ ਵਸਤੁ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥੩॥

bheetar hodee vasat na jaanai |3|

but they do not know the secret deep within. ||3||

ਹਉ ਨ ਮੂਆ ਮੇਰੀ ਮੁਈ ਬਲਾਇ ॥

hau na mooaa meree muee balaae |

I have not died - that evil nature within me has died.

ਓਹੁ ਨ ਮੂਆ ਜੋ ਰਹਿਆ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

ohu na mooaa jo rahiaa samaae |

The One who is pervading everywhere does not die.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਗੁਰਿ ਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਦਿਖਾਇਆ ॥

kahu naanak gur braham dikhaaeaa |

Says Nanak, the Guru has revealed God to me,

ਮਰਤਾ ਜਾਤਾ ਨਦਰਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥੪॥੪॥

marataa jaataa nadar na aaeaa |4|4|

and now I see that there is no such thing as birth or death. ||4||4||

Raag GaureeGuru Guru Nanak

ਗਉੜੀ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ਦਖਣੀ ॥

gaurree mahalaa 1 dakhanee |

Gauree, First Mehl, Dakhanee:

ਸੁਣਿ ਸੁਣਿ ਬੂਝੈ ਮਾਨੈ ਨਾਉ ॥

sun sun boojhai maanai naau |

I am forever a sacrifice to the one who listens and hears,

ਤਾ ਕੈ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥

taa kai sad balihaarai jaau |

Who understands and believes in the Name.

ਆਪਿ ਭੁਲਾਏ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਠਾਉ ॥

aap bhulaae tthaur na tthaau |

When the Lord Himself leads us astray, there is no other place of rest for us to find.

ਤੂੰ ਸਮਝਾਵਹਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਉ ॥੧॥

toon samajhaaveh mel milaau |1|

You impart understanding, and You unite us in Your Union. ||1||

ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਚਲੈ ਮੈ ਨਾਲਿ ॥

naam milai chalai mai naal |

I obtain the Naam, which shall go along with me in the end.

ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਾਧੀ ਸਭ ਕਾਲਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

bin naavai baadhee sabh kaal |1| rahaau |

Without the Name, all are held in the grip of Death. ||1||Pause||

ਖੇਤੀ ਵਣਜੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਕੀ ਓਟ ॥

khetee vanaj naavai kee ott |

My farming and my trading are by the Support of the Name.

ਪਾਪੁ ਪੁੰਨੁ ਬੀਜ ਕੀ ਪੋਟ ॥

paap pun beej kee pott |

The seeds of sin and virtue are bound together.

ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਜੀਅ ਮਹਿ ਚੋਟ ॥

kaam krodh jeea meh chott |

Sexual desire and anger are the wounds of the soul.

ਨਾਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਚਲੇ ਮਨਿ ਖੋਟ ॥੨॥

naam visaar chale man khott |2|

The evil-minded ones forget the Naam, and then depart. ||2||

ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਸਾਚੀ ਸੀਖ ॥

saache gur kee saachee seekh |

True are the Teachings of the True Guru.

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਪਰੀਖ ॥

tan man seetal saach pareekh |

The body and mind are cooled and soothed, by the touchstone of Truth.

ਜਲ ਪੁਰਾਇਨਿ ਰਸ ਕਮਲ ਪਰੀਖ ॥

jal puraaein ras kamal pareekh |

This is the true mark of wisdom: that one remains detached, like the water-lily, or the lotus upon the water.

ਸਬਦਿ ਰਤੇ ਮੀਠੇ ਰਸ ਈਖ ॥੩॥

sabad rate meetthe ras eekh |3|

Attuned to the Word of the Shabad, one becomes sweet, like the juice of the sugar cane. ||3||

ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਗੜਿ ਦਸ ਦੁਆਰ ॥

hukam sanjogee garr das duaar |

By the Hukam of the Lord's Command, the castle of the body has ten gates.

ਪੰਚ ਵਸਹਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਅਪਾਰ ॥

panch vaseh mil jot apaar |

The five passions dwell there, together with the Divine Light of the Infinite.

ਆਪਿ ਤੁਲੈ ਆਪੇ ਵਣਜਾਰ ॥

aap tulai aape vanajaar |

The Lord Himself is the merchandise, and He Himself is the trader.

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰ ॥੪॥੫॥

naanak naam savaaranahaar |4|5|

O Nanak, through the Naam, the Name of the Lord, we are adorned and rejuvenated. ||4||5||

Gauree, First Mehl:

ਜਾਤੋ ਜਾਇ ਕਹਾ ਤੇ ਆਵੈ ॥

jaato jaae kahaa te aavai |

How can we know where we came from?

ਕਹ ਉਪਜੈ ਕਹ ਜਾਇ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥

keh upajai keh jaae samaavai |

Where did we originate, and where will we go and merge?

ਕਿਉ ਬਾਧਿਓ ਕਿਉ ਮੁਕਤੀ ਪਾਵੈ ॥

kiau baadhio kiau mukatee paavai |

How are we bound, and how do we obtain liberation?

ਕਿਉ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵੈ ॥੧॥

kiau abinaasee sehaj samaavai |1|

How do we merge with intuitive ease into the Eternal, Imperishable Lord? ||1||

ਨਾਮੁ ਰਿਦੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ॥

naam ridai amrit mukh naam |

With the Naam in the heart and the Ambrosial Naam on our lips,

ਨਰਹਰ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਰਹਰ ਨਿਹਕਾਮੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

narahar naam narahar nihakaam |1| rahaau |

through the Name of the Lord, we rise above desire, like the Lord. ||1||Pause||

ਸਹਜੇ ਆਵੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਜਾਇ ॥

sahaje aavai sahaje jaae |

With intuitive ease we come, and with intuitive ease we depart.

ਮਨ ਤੇ ਉਪਜੈ ਮਨ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥

man te upajai man maeh samaae |

From the mind we originate, and into the mind we are absorbed.

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੁਕਤੋ ਬੰਧੁ ਨ ਪਾਇ ॥

guramukh mukato bandh na paae |

As Gurmukh, we are liberated, and are not bound.

ਸਬਦੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿ ਛੁਟੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਇ ॥੨॥

sabad beechaar chhuttai har naae |2|

Contemplating the Word of the Shabad, we are emancipated through the Name of the Lord. ||2||

ਤਰਵਰ ਪੰਖੀ ਬਹੁ ਨਿਸਿ ਬਾਸੁ ॥

taravar pankhee bahu nis baas |

At night, lots of birds settle on the tree.

ਸੁਖ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਮਨਿ ਮੋਹ ਵਿਣਾਸੁ ॥

sukh dukheea man moh vinaas |

Some are happy, and some are sad. Caught in the desires of the mind, they perish.

ਸਾਝ ਬਿਹਾਗ ਤਕਹਿ ਆਗਾਸੁ ॥

saajh bihaag takeh aagaas |

And when the life-night comes to its end, then they look to the sky.

ਦਹ ਦਿਸਿ ਧਾਵਹਿ ਕਰਮਿ ਲਿਖਿਆਸੁ ॥੩॥

deh dis dhaaveh karam likhiaas |3|

They fly away in all ten directions, according to their pre-ordained destiny. ||3||

ਨਾਮ ਸੰਜੋਗੀ ਗੋਇਲਿ ਥਾਟੁ ॥

naam sanjogee goeil thaatt |

Those who are committed to the Naam, see the world as merely a temporary pasture.

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਫੂਟੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਟੁ ॥

kaam krodh foottai bikh maatt |

Sexual desire and anger are broken, like a jar of poison.

ਬਿਨੁ ਵਖਰ ਸੂਨੋ ਘਰੁ ਹਾਟੁ ॥

bin vakhar soono ghar haatt |

Without the merchandise of the Name, the house of the body and the store of the mind are empty.

ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਖੋਲੇ ਬਜਰ ਕਪਾਟ ॥੪॥

gur mil khole bajar kapaatt |4|

Meeting the Guru, the hard and heavy doors are opened. ||4||

ਸਾਧੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਪੂਰਬ ਸੰਜੋਗ ॥

saadh milai poorab sanjog |

One meets the Holy Saint only through perfect destiny.

ਸਚਿ ਰਹਸੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਲੋਗ ॥

sach rahase poore har log |

The Lord's perfect people rejoice in the Truth.

ਮਨੁ ਤਨੁ ਦੇ ਲੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਇ ॥

man tan de lai sehaj subhaae |

Surrendering their minds and bodies, they find the Lord with intuitive ease.

ਨਾਨਕ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਲਾਗਉ ਪਾਇ ॥੫॥੬॥

naanak tin kai laagau paae |5|6|

Nanak falls at their feet. ||5||6||
