Maajh, Third Mehl:
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਸਬਾਇਆ ॥
maaeaa mohu jagat sabaaeaa |
The whole world is engrossed in emotional attachment to Maya.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਦੀਸਹਿ ਮੋਹੇ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
trai gun deeseh mohe maaeaa |
Those who are controlled by the three qualities are attached to Maya.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਕੋ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਚਉਥੈ ਪਦਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
gur parasaadee ko viralaa boojhai chauthai pad liv laavaniaa |1|
By Guru's Grace, a few come to understand; they center their consciousness in the fourth state. ||1||
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥
hau vaaree jeeo vaaree maaeaa mohu sabad jalaavaniaa |
I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who burn away their emotional attachment to Maya, through the Shabad.
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹੁ ਜਲਾਏ ਸੋ ਹਰਿ ਸਿਉ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਏ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਿ ਮਹਲੀ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
maaeaa mohu jalaae so har siau chit laae har dar mahalee sobhaa paavaniaa |1| rahaau |
Those who burn away this attachment to Maya, and focus their consciousness on the Lord are honored in the True Court, and the Mansion of the Lord's Presence. ||1||Pause||
ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਹੈ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
devee devaa mool hai maaeaa |
The source, the root, of the gods and goddesses is Maya.
ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਿ ਸਾਸਤ ਜਿੰਨਿ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
sinmrit saasat jin upaaeaa |
For them, the Simritees and the Shaastras were composed.
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਪਸਰਿਆ ਸੰਸਾਰੇ ਆਇ ਜਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
kaam krodh pasariaa sansaare aae jaae dukh paavaniaa |2|
Sexual desire and anger are diffused throughout the universe. Coming and going, people suffer in pain. ||2||
ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਗਿਆਨ ਰਤਨੁ ਇਕੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
tis vich giaan ratan ik paaeaa |
The jewel of spiritual wisdom was placed within the universe.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਇਆ ॥
gur parasaadee man vasaaeaa |
By Guru's Grace, it is enshrined within the mind.
ਜਤੁ ਸਤੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਸਚੁ ਕਮਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਪੂਰੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
jat sat sanjam sach kamaavai gur poorai naam dhiaavaniaa |3|
Celibacy, chastity, self-discipline and the practice of truthfulness are obtained from the Perfect Guru, by meditating on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||3||
ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਧਨ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣੀ ॥
peeearrai dhan bharam bhulaanee |
In this world of her parents' home, the soul-bride has been deluded by doubt.
ਦੂਜੈ ਲਾਗੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੋਤਾਣੀ ॥
doojai laagee fir pachhotaanee |
Attached to duality, she later comes to regret it.
ਹਲਤੁ ਪਲਤੁ ਦੋਵੈ ਗਵਾਏ ਸੁਪਨੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
halat palat dovai gavaae supanai sukh na paavaniaa |4|
She forfeits both this world and the next, and even in her dreams, she does not find peace. ||4||
ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਧਨ ਕੰਤੁ ਸਮਾਲੇ ॥
peeearrai dhan kant samaale |
The soul-bride who remembers her Husband Lord in this world,
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਵੇਖੈ ਨਾਲੇ ॥
gur parasaadee vekhai naale |
by Guru's Grace, sees Him close at hand.
ਪਿਰ ਕੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਰਹੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਿੰਗਾਰੁ ਬਣਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
pir kai sehaj rahai rang raatee sabad singaar banaavaniaa |5|
She remains intuitively attuned to the Love of her Beloved; she makes the Word of His Shabad her decoration. ||5||
ਸਫਲੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਜਿਨਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
safal janam jinaa satigur paaeaa |
Blessed and fruitful is the coming of those who find the True Guru;
ਦੂਜਾ ਭਾਉ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਇਆ ॥
doojaa bhaau gur sabad jalaaeaa |
through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they burn their love of duality.
ਏਕੋ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਸੰਗਤਿ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
eko rav rahiaa ghatt antar mil satasangat har gun gaavaniaa |6|
The One Lord is permeating and pervading deep within the heart. Joining the Sat Sangat, the True Congregation, they sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||6||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਨ ਸੇਵੇ ਸੋ ਕਾਹੇ ਆਇਆ ॥
satigur na seve so kaahe aaeaa |
Those who do not serve the True Guru-why did they even come into this world?
ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
dhrig jeevan birathaa janam gavaaeaa |
Cursed are their lives; they have uselessly wasted this human life.
ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਬਹੁ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
manamukh naam chit na aavai bin naavai bahu dukh paavaniaa |7|
The self-willed manmukhs do not remember the Naam. Without the Naam, they suffer in terrible pain. ||7||
ਜਿਨਿ ਸਿਸਟਿ ਸਾਜੀ ਸੋਈ ਜਾਣੈ ॥
jin sisatt saajee soee jaanai |
The One who created the Universe, He alone knows it.
ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਣੈ ॥
aape melai sabad pachhaanai |
He unites with Himself those who realize the Shabad.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਤਿਨ ਜਨ ਕਉ ਜਿਨ ਧੁਰਿ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਲੇਖੁ ਲਿਖਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੧॥੩੨॥੩੩॥
naanak naam miliaa tin jan kau jin dhur masatak lekh likhaavaniaa |8|1|32|33|
O Nanak, they alone receive the Naam, upon whose foreheads such pre-ordained destiny is recorded. ||8||1||32||33||

Maajh, Fourth Mehl:
ਆਦਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਆਪੇ ॥
aad purakh aparanpar aape |
The Primal Being is Himself remote and beyond.
ਆਪੇ ਥਾਪੇ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪੇ ॥
aape thaape thaap uthaape |
He Himself establishes, and having established, He disestablishes.
ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਵਰਤੈ ਏਕੋ ਸੋਈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
sabh meh varatai eko soee guramukh sobhaa paavaniaa |1|
The One Lord is pervading in all; those who become Gurmukh are honored. ||1||
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਨਿਰੰਕਾਰੀ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਣਿਆ ॥
hau vaaree jeeo vaaree nirankaaree naam dhiaavaniaa |
I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Formless Lord.
ਤਿਸੁ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖਿਆ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਦੇਖਿਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tis roop na rekhiaa ghatt ghatt dekhiaa guramukh alakh lakhaavaniaa |1| rahaau |
He has no form or shape; He is seen within each and every heart. The Gurmukh comes to know the unknowable. ||1||Pause||
ਤੂ ਦਇਆਲੁ ਕਿਰਪਾਲੁ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
too deaal kirapaal prabh soee |
You are God, Kind and Merciful.
ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜਾ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ॥
tudh bin doojaa avar na koee |
Without You, there is no other at all.
ਗੁਰੁ ਪਰਸਾਦੁ ਕਰੇ ਨਾਮੁ ਦੇਵੈ ਨਾਮੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
gur parasaad kare naam devai naame naam samaavaniaa |2|
When the Guru showers His Grace upon us, He blesses us with the Naam; through the Naam, we merge in the Naam. ||2||
ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਸਚਾ ਸਿਰਜਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
toon aape sachaa sirajanahaaraa |
You Yourself are the True Creator Lord.
ਭਗਤੀ ਭਰੇ ਤੇਰੇ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥
bhagatee bhare tere bhanddaaraa |
Your treasures are overflowing with devotional worship.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਜੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਧਿ ਲਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
guramukh naam milai man bheejai sehaj samaadh lagaavaniaa |3|
The Gurmukhs obtain the Naam. Their minds are enraptured, and they easily and intuitively enter into Samaadhi. ||3||
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਤੇਰੇ ॥
anadin gun gaavaa prabh tere |
Night and day, I sing Your Glorious Praises, God.
ਤੁਧੁ ਸਾਲਾਹੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਮੇਰੇ ॥
tudh saalaahee preetam mere |
I praise You, O my Beloved.
ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਜਾਚਾ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਤੂੰ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
tudh bin avar na koee jaachaa gur parasaadee toon paavaniaa |4|
Without You, there is no other for me to seek out. It is only by Guru's Grace that You are found. ||4||
ਅਗਮੁ ਅਗੋਚਰੁ ਮਿਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
agam agochar mit nahee paaee |
The limits of the Inaccessible and Incomprehensible Lord cannot be found.
ਅਪਣੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਹਿ ਤੂੰ ਲੈਹਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ॥
apanee kripaa kareh toon laihi milaaee |
Bestowing Your Mercy, You merge us into Yourself.
ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਧਿਆਈਐ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੇਵਿ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
poore gur kai sabad dhiaaeeai sabad sev sukh paavaniaa |5|
Through the Shabad, the Word of the Perfect Guru, we meditate on the Lord. Serving the Shabad, peace is found. ||5||
ਰਸਨਾ ਗੁਣਵੰਤੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥
rasanaa gunavantee gun gaavai |
Praiseworthy is the tongue which sings the Lord's Glorious Praises.
ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹੇ ਸਚੇ ਭਾਵੈ ॥
naam salaahe sache bhaavai |
Praising the Naam, one becomes pleasing to the True One.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਚੇ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
guramukh sadaa rahai rang raatee mil sache sobhaa paavaniaa |6|
The Gurmukh remains forever imbued with the Lord's Love. Meeting the True Lord, glory is obtained. ||6||
ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਕਰਮ ਕਰੇ ਅਹੰਕਾਰੀ ॥
manamukh karam kare ahankaaree |
The self-willed manmukhs do their deeds in ego.
ਜੂਐ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਭ ਬਾਜੀ ਹਾਰੀ ॥
jooai janam sabh baajee haaree |
They lose their whole lives in the gamble.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਲੋਭੁ ਮਹਾ ਗੁਬਾਰਾ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵਣ ਜਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
antar lobh mahaa gubaaraa fir fir aavan jaavaniaa |7|
Within is the terrible darkness of greed, and so they come and go in reincarnation, over and over again. ||7||
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
aape karataa de vaddiaaee |
The Creator Himself bestows Glory
ਜਿਨ ਕਉ ਆਪਿ ਲਿਖਤੁ ਧੁਰਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
jin kau aap likhat dhur paaee |
On those whom He Himself has so pre-destined.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਭਉ ਭੰਜਨੁ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੧॥੩੪॥
naanak naam milai bhau bhanjan gurasabadee sukh paavaniaa |8|1|34|
O Nanak, they receive the Naam, the Name of the Lord, the Destroyer of fear; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they find peace. ||8||1||34||

ਅਨਕਾਦ ਸਰੂਪੰ ਅਮਿਤ ਬਿਭੂਤੰ ਅਚਲ ਸਰੂਪੰ ਬਿਸੁ ਕਰਣੰ ॥
anakaad saroopan amit bibhootan achal saroopan bis karanan |
He is without distress from the very beginning, Master of Unlimited wealth, an immovable Entity and Creator of the Universe.
ਜਗ ਜੋਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸੰ ਆਦਿ ਅਨਾਸੰ ਅਮਿਤ ਅਗਾਸੰ ਸਰਬ ਭਰਣੰ ॥
jag jot prakaasan aad anaasan amit agaasan sarab bharanan |
There is illumination of His Light in the world He is indestructible from the very beginning He, of Boundless Heaven, is the Sustainer of all.
ਅਨਗੰਜ ਅਕਾਲੰ ਬਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲੰ ਦੀਨ ਦਿਆਲੰ ਸੁਭ ਕਰਣੰ ॥
anaganj akaalan bis pratipaalan deen diaalan subh karanan |
He is Invincible, Deathless, Sustainer of the Universe, Merciful Lord of the lowely and Performer of Good actions.
ਆਨੰਦ ਸਰੂਪੰ ਅਨਹਦ ਰੂਪੰ ਅਮਿਤ ਬਿਭੂਤੰ ਤਵ ਸਰਣੰ ॥੧॥੨੧॥
aanand saroopan anahad roopan amit bibhootan tav saranan |1|21|
He is Blissful Entity, and Unlimited Entity of Boundless wealth, I am in Thy refuge.1.21.
ਬਿਸ੍ਵੰਭਰ ਭਰਣੰ ਜਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਕਰਣੰ ਅਧਰਣ ਧਰਣੰ ਸਿਸਟ ਕਰੰ ॥
bisvanbhar bharanan jagat prakaranan adharan dharanan sisatt karan |
Thou art the Sustainer of the Universe, the Creator of the world, the Support of the helpless and the author of macrocosm.
ਆਨੰਦ ਸਰੂਪੀ ਅਨਹਦ ਰੂਪੀ ਅਮਿਤ ਬਿਭੂਤੀ ਤੇਜ ਬਰੰ ॥
aanand saroopee anahad roopee amit bibhootee tej baran |
Thou art Blissful and Unlimited Entity, of Unlimited wealth and of Supreme magnificence.
ਅਨਖੰਡ ਪ੍ਰਤਾਪੰ ਸਭ ਜਗ ਥਾਪੰ ਅਲਖ ਅਤਾਪੰ ਬਿਸੁ ਕਰੰ ॥
anakhandd prataapan sabh jag thaapan alakh ataapan bis karan |
Thy Glory is indivisible, Thou art the establisher of the whole world, Incomprehensible, without suffering and Creator of the world.
ਅਦ੍ਵੈ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਤੇਜ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸੀ ਸਰਬ ਉਦਾਸੀ ਏਕ ਹਰੰ ॥੨॥੨੨॥
advai abinaasee tej prakaasee sarab udaasee ek haran |2|22|
Thou art Non-dual, indestructible, Illuminator of Thy Light, Detached from all and the only Lord.2.22.
ਅਨਖੰਡ ਅਮੰਡੰ ਤੇਜ ਪ੍ਰਚੰਡੰ ਜੋਤਿ ਉਦੰਡੰ ਅਮਿਤ ਮਤੰ ॥
anakhandd amanddan tej prachanddan jot udanddan amit matan |
Thou art indivisible, Unestablished, of Supreme Splendour and Light, and of Boundless intellect.
ਅਨਭੈ ਅਨਗਾਧੰ ਅਲਖ ਅਬਾਧੰ ਬਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਧੰ ਅਮਿਤ ਗਤੰ ॥
anabhai anagaadhan alakh abaadhan bis prasaadhan amit gatan |
Thou art Fearless, Unfathomable, Incomprehensible, Unttached, Keeper of the Universe under discipline and of infinite movement.
ਆਨੰਦ ਸਰੂਪੀ ਅਨਹਦ ਰੂਪੀ ਅਚਲ ਬਿਭੂਤੀ ਭਵ ਤਰਣੰ ॥
aanand saroopee anahad roopee achal bibhootee bhav taranan |
Thou art Blissful and Unlimited Entity, of stable wealth and the causer of swimming across the dreadful world-ocean.
ਅਨਗਾਧਿ ਅਬਾਧੰ ਜਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਧੰ ਸਰਬ ਅਰਾਧੰ ਤਵ ਸਰਣੰ ॥੩॥੨੩॥
anagaadh abaadhan jagat prasaadhan sarab araadhan tav saranan |3|23|
Thou art the unfathomable, Unattached, Keeper of the world under discipline and meditated upon by all I am in Thy refuge.3.23.
ਅਕਲੰਕ ਅਬਾਧੰ ਬਿਸੁ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਧੰ ਜਗਤ ਅਰਾਧੰ ਭਵ ਨਾਸੰ ॥
akalank abaadhan bis prasaadhan jagat araadhan bhav naasan |
Thou art Unblemished, Unattached, Keeper of the Universe under discipline, remembered by the world and destroyer of fear.
ਬਿਸ੍ਵੰਭਰ ਭਰਣੰ ਕਿਲਵਿਖ ਹਰਣੰ ਪਤਤ ਉਧਰਣੰ ਸਭ ਸਾਥੰ ॥
bisvanbhar bharanan kilavikh haranan patat udharanan sabh saathan |
Thou art the Sustainer of the universe, destroyer of sins, redeemer of the sinners and be comrade of all.
ਅਨਾਥਨ ਨਾਥੇ ਅਕ੍ਰਿਤ ਅਗਾਥੇ ਅਮਿਤ ਅਨਾਥੇ ਦੁਖ ਹਰਣੰ ॥
anaathan naathe akrit agaathe amit anaathe dukh haranan |
Thou art the Master of the masterless, Uncreated, Undescribed, Unlimited, Patronless and remover of sufferings.
ਅਗੰਜ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸੀ ਜਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਸੀ ਤੁਯ ਸਰਣੰ ॥੪॥੨੪॥
aganj abinaasee jot prakaasee jagat pranaasee tuy saranan |4|24|
Thou art Invincible, Indestructible, Illuminator of Light, the destroyer of the world, I am in Thy refuge.4.24.

Thou art the Supreme Essence and enlightener of the path of subtle Truth

Thou art Indivisible, Unattached, the Supreme Enlightener, Primal, Indestructible and Creator of the universe.
ਜਗਤਾਵਲ ਕਰਤਾ ਜਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਹਰਤਾ ਸਭ ਜਗ ਭਰਤਾ ਸਿਧ ਭਰੰ ॥
jagataaval karataa jagat praharataa sabh jag bharataa sidh bharan |
