ik oankaar sat naam karataa purakh nirbhau niravair akaal moorat ajoonee saibhan gur prasaad |
One Universal Creator God. Truth Is The Name. Creative Being Personified. No Fear. No Hatred. Image Of The Undying. Beyond Birth. Self-Existent. By Guru's Grace:
ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਹਸਣਾ ਸਉਣਾ ਵਿਸਰਿ ਗਇਆ ਹੈ ਮਰਣਾ ॥
khaanaa peenaa hasanaa saunaa visar geaa hai maranaa |
Eating, drinking, laughing and sleeping, the mortal forgets about dying.
ਖਸਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਖੁਆਰੀ ਕੀਨੀ ਧ੍ਰਿਗੁ ਜੀਵਣੁ ਨਹੀ ਰਹਣਾ ॥੧॥
khasam visaar khuaaree keenee dhrig jeevan nahee rahanaa |1|
Forgetting his Lord and Master, the mortal is ruined, and his life is cursed. He cannot remain forever. ||1||
ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਏਕੋ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵਹੁ ॥
praanee eko naam dhiaavahu |
O mortal, meditate on the One Lord.
ਅਪਨੀ ਪਤਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਵਹੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
apanee pat setee ghar jaavahu |1| rahaau |
You shall go to your true home with honor. ||1 Pause||
ਤੁਧਨੋ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਤੁਝੁ ਕਿਆ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਮਾਂਗਹਿ ਲੇਵਹਿ ਰਹਹਿ ਨਹੀ ॥
tudhano seveh tujh kiaa deveh maangeh leveh raheh nahee |
Those who serve You - what can they give You? They beg for and receive what cannot remain.
ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾ ਜੀਆ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਜੀਆ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜੀਉ ਤੁਹੀ ॥੨॥
too daataa jeea sabhanaa kaa jeea andar jeeo tuhee |2|
You are the Great Giver of all souls; You are the Life within all living beings. ||2||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਧਿਆਵਹਿ ਸਿ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਸੇਈ ਸੂਚੇ ਹੋਹੀ ॥
guramukh dhiaaveh si amrit paaveh seee sooche hohee |
The Gurmukhs meditate, and receive the Ambrosial Nectar; thus they become pure.
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਹੁ ਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਮੈਲੇ ਹਛੇ ਹੋਹੀ ॥੩॥
ahinis naam japahu re praanee maile hachhe hohee |3|
Day and night, chant the Naam, the Name of the Lord, O mortal. It makes the filthy immacuate. ||3||
ਜੇਹੀ ਰੁਤਿ ਕਾਇਆ ਸੁਖੁ ਤੇਹਾ ਤੇਹੋ ਜੇਹੀ ਦੇਹੀ ॥
jehee rut kaaeaa sukh tehaa teho jehee dehee |
As is the season, so is the comfort of the body, and so is the body itself.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰੁਤਿ ਸੁਹਾਵੀ ਸਾਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਰੁਤਿ ਕੇਹੀ ॥੪॥੧॥
naanak rut suhaavee saaee bin naavai rut kehee |4|1|
O Nanak, that season is beautiful; without the Name, what season is it? ||4||1||

ਕਰਉ ਬਿਨਉ ਗੁਰ ਅਪਨੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ ਹਰਿ ਵਰੁ ਆਣਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ॥
krau binau gur apane preetam har var aan milaavai |
I offer prayers to my Beloved Guru, that He may unite me with my Husband Lord.
ਸੁਣਿ ਘਨ ਘੋਰ ਸੀਤਲੁ ਮਨੁ ਮੋਰਾ ਲਾਲ ਰਤੀ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ॥੧॥
sun ghan ghor seetal man moraa laal ratee gun gaavai |1|
I hear the thunder in the clouds, and my mind is cooled and soothed; imbued with the Love of my Dear Beloved, I sing His Glorious Praises. ||1||
ਬਰਸੁ ਘਨਾ ਮੇਰਾ ਮਨੁ ਭੀਨਾ ॥
baras ghanaa meraa man bheenaa |
The rain pours down, and my mind is drenched with His Love.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬੂੰਦ ਸੁਹਾਨੀ ਹੀਅਰੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਮੋਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਰਸਿ ਲੀਨਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
amrit boond suhaanee heearai gur mohee man har ras leenaa |1| rahaau |
The drop of Ambrosial Nectar pleases my heart; the Guru has fascinated my mind, which is drenched in the sublime essence of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਖੀ ਵਰ ਕਾਮਣਿ ਪਿਆਰੀ ਜਿਸੁ ਗੁਰ ਬਚਨੀ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥
sehaj sukhee var kaaman piaaree jis gur bachanee man maaniaa |
With intuitive peace and poise, the soul-bride is loved by her Husband Lord; her mind is pleased and appeased by the Guru's Teachings.
ਹਰਿ ਵਰਿ ਨਾਰਿ ਭਈ ਸੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮੁ ਸੁਖਾਨਿਆ ॥੨॥
har var naar bhee sohaagan man tan prem sukhaaniaa |2|
She is the happy soul-bride of her Husband Lord; her mind and body are filled with joy by His Love. ||2||
ਅਵਗਣ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਭਈ ਬੈਰਾਗਨਿ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਵਰੁ ਸੋਹਾਗੁ ਹਰੀ ॥
avagan tiaag bhee bairaagan asathir var sohaag haree |
Discarding her demerits, she becomes detached; with the Lord as her Husband, her marriage is eternal.
ਸੋਗੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਤਿਸੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਵਿਆਪੈ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਅਪਣੀ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਕਰੀ ॥੩॥
sog vijog tis kade na viaapai har prabh apanee kirapaa karee |3|
She never suffers separation or sorrow; her Lord God showers her with His Grace. ||3||
ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣੁ ਨਹੀ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਹਚਲੁ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਕੀ ਓਟ ਗਹੀ ॥
aavan jaan nahee man nihachal poore gur kee ott gahee |
Her mind is steady and stable; she does not come and go in reincarnation.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਪਿ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਧਨੁ ਸੋਹਾਗਣਿ ਸਚੁ ਸਹੀ ॥੪॥੨॥
naanak raam naam jap guramukh dhan sohaagan sach sahee |4|2|
She takes the Shelter of the Perfect Guru. O Nanak, as Gurmukh, chant the Naam; you shall be accepted as the true soul-bride of the Lord. ||4||2||

Malaar, First Mehl:
ਸਾਚੀ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਨਹੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤੇ ਹਉਮੈ ਕਰਤ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
saachee surat naam nahee tripate haumai karat gavaaeaa |
They pretend to understand the Truth, but they are not satisfied by the Naam; they waste their lives in egotism.
ਪਰ ਧਨ ਪਰ ਨਾਰੀ ਰਤੁ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਬਿਖੁ ਖਾਈ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
par dhan par naaree rat nindaa bikh khaaee dukh paaeaa |
Caught in slander and attachment to the wealth and women of others, they eat poison and suffer in pain.
ਸਬਦੁ ਚੀਨਿ ਭੈ ਕਪਟ ਨ ਛੂਟੇ ਮਨਿ ਮੁਖਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਮਾਇਆ ॥
sabad cheen bhai kapatt na chhootte man mukh maaeaa maaeaa |
They think about the Shabad, but they are not released from their fear and fraud; the minds and mouths are filled with Maya, Maya.
ਅਜਗਰਿ ਭਾਰਿ ਲਦੇ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਰੀ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮੇ ਜਨਮੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
ajagar bhaar lade at bhaaree mar janame janam gavaaeaa |1|
Loading the heavy and crushing load, they die, only to be reborn, and waste their lives again. ||1||
ਮਨਿ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਹਾਇਆ ॥
man bhaavai sabad suhaaeaa |
The Word of the Shabad is so very beautiful; it is pleasing to my mind.
ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਜੋਨਿ ਭੇਖ ਬਹੁ ਕੀਨੑੇ ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸਚੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bhram bhram jon bhekh bahu keenae gur raakhe sach paaeaa |1| rahaau |
The mortal wanders lost in reincarnation, wearing various robes and clothes; when he is saved and protected by the Guru, then he finds the Truth. ||1||Pause||
ਤੀਰਥਿ ਤੇਜੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿ ਨ ਨੑਾਤੇ ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
teerath tej nivaar na naate har kaa naam na bhaaeaa |
He does not try to wash away his angry passions by bathing at sacred shrines. He does not love the Name of the Lord.
ਰਤਨ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਤਿਆਗਿਆ ਜਤ ਕੋ ਤਤ ਹੀ ਆਇਆ ॥
ratan padaarath parahar tiaagiaa jat ko tat hee aaeaa |
He abandons and discards the priceless jewel, and he goes back from where he came.
ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕੀਟ ਭਏ ਉਤ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਉਤ ਹੀ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥
bisattaa keett bhe ut hee te ut hee maeh samaaeaa |
And so he becomes a maggot in manure, and in that, he is absorbed.
ਅਧਿਕ ਸੁਆਦ ਰੋਗ ਅਧਿਕਾਈ ਬਿਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
adhik suaad rog adhikaaee bin gur sehaj na paaeaa |2|
The more he tastes, the more he is diseased; without the Guru, there is no peace and poise. ||2||
ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਰਹਸਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥
sevaa surat rehas gun gaavaa guramukh giaan beechaaraa |
Focusing my awareness on selfless service, I joyfully sing His Praises. As Gurmukh, I contemplate spiritual wisdom.
ਖੋਜੀ ਉਪਜੈ ਬਾਦੀ ਬਿਨਸੈ ਹਉ ਬਲਿ ਬਲਿ ਗੁਰ ਕਰਤਾਰਾ ॥
khojee upajai baadee binasai hau bal bal gur karataaraa |
The seeker comes forth, and the debater dies down; I am a sacrifice, a sacrifice to the Guru, the Creator Lord.
ਹਮ ਨੀਚ ਹੋੁਤੇ ਹੀਣਮਤਿ ਝੂਠੇ ਤੂ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਵਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
ham neech houte heenamat jhootthe too sabad savaaranahaaraa |
I am low and wretched, with shallow and false understanding; You embellish and exalt me through the Word of Your Shabad.
ਆਤਮ ਚੀਨਿ ਤਹਾ ਤੂ ਤਾਰਣ ਸਚੁ ਤਾਰੇ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰਾ ॥੩॥
aatam cheen tahaa too taaran sach taare taaranahaaraa |3|
And wherever there is self-realization, You are there; O True Lord Savior, You save us and carry us across. ||3||
ਬੈਸਿ ਸੁਥਾਨਿ ਕਹਾਂ ਗੁਣ ਤੇਰੇ ਕਿਆ ਕਿਆ ਕਥਉ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
bais suthaan kahaan gun tere kiaa kiaa kthau apaaraa |
Where should I sit to chant Your Praises; which of Your Infinite Praises should I chant?
ਅਲਖੁ ਨ ਲਖੀਐ ਅਗਮੁ ਅਜੋਨੀ ਤੂੰ ਨਾਥਾਂ ਨਾਥਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
alakh na lakheeai agam ajonee toon naathaan naathanahaaraa |
The Unknown cannot be known; O Inaccessible, Unborn Lord God, You are the Lord and Master of masters.
ਕਿਸੁ ਪਹਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਕਹਉ ਤੂ ਕੈਸਾ ਸਭਿ ਜਾਚਕ ਤੂ ਦਾਤਾਰਾ ॥
kis peh dekh khau too kaisaa sabh jaachak too daataaraa |
How can I compare You to anyone else I see? All are beggars - You are the Great Giver.
ਭਗਤਿਹੀਣੁ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਦਰਿ ਦੇਖਹੁ ਇਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਉਰਿ ਧਾਰਾ ॥੪॥੩॥
bhagatiheen naanak dar dekhahu ik naam milai ur dhaaraa |4|3|
Lacking devotion, Nanak looks to Your Door; please bless him with Your One Name, that he may enshrine it in his heart. ||4||3||

jan tih hutaa aakh main sau kan |
ਤਾ ਸੌ ਤਾਹਿ ਸਿਪਰਧਾ ਰਹੈ ॥
taa sau taeh siparadhaa rahai |
ਚਿਤ ਭੀਤਰ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਨਹਿ ਕਹੈ ॥੨॥
chit bheetar mukh te neh kahai |2|
ਤ੍ਰਿਪੁਰਾ ਮਤੀ ਏਕ ਦਿਜ ਊਪਰ ॥
tripuraa matee ek dij aoopar |
ਅਟਕੀ ਰਹੈ ਅਧਿਕ ਹੀ ਚਿਤ ਕਰਿ ॥
attakee rahai adhik hee chit kar |
ਰੈਨਿ ਦਿਵਸ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਤਾਹਿ ਬੁਲਾਵੇ ॥
rain divas grih taeh bulaave |
ਕਾਮ ਕੇਲ ਰੁਚਿ ਮਾਨ ਮਚਾਵੈ ॥੩॥
kaam kel ruch maan machaavai |3|
ਏਕ ਨਾਰਿ ਤਿਨ ਬੋਲਿ ਪਠਾਈ ॥

ਅਧਿਕ ਦਰਬ ਦੈ ਐਸਿ ਸਿਖਾਈ ॥
adhik darab dai ais sikhaaee |
ਜਬ ਹੀ ਜਾਇ ਪ੍ਰਜਾ ਸਭ ਸੋਈ ॥
jab hee jaae prajaa sabh soee |
ਊਚ ਸਬਦ ਉਠਿਯਹੁ ਤਬ ਰੋਈ ॥੪॥
aooch sabad utthiyahu tab roee |4|
ਯੌ ਕਹਿ ਜਾਇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਤਨ ਸੋਈ ॥
yau keh jaae nripat tan soee |
ਆਧੀ ਰਾਤਿ ਅੰਧੇਰੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
aadhee raat andheree hoee |
ਅਧਿਕ ਦੁਖਿਤ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਨਾਰਿ ਪੁਕਾਰੀ ॥
adhik dukhit hvai naar pukaaree |
ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਕੇ ਪਰੀ ਕਾਨ ਧੁਨਿ ਭਾਰੀ ॥੫॥
nrip ke paree kaan dhun bhaaree |5|
ਰਾਣੀ ਲਈ ਸੰਗ ਅਪਨੇ ਕਰਿ ॥
raanee lee sang apane kar |
ਹਾਥ ਬਿਖੈ ਅਪਨੇ ਅਸ ਕੌ ਧਰਿ ॥
haath bikhai apane as kau dhar |
ਦੋਊ ਚਲਿ ਤੀਰ ਤਵਨ ਕੇ ਗਏ ॥
doaoo chal teer tavan ke ge |
ਇਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਸੌ ਪੂਛਤ ਤਿਹ ਭਏ ॥੬॥
eih bidh sau poochhat tih bhe |6|

ਮਾਰਤ ਹੌ ਨਹਿ ਠੌਰ ਤੁਹਿ ਸਾਚ ਬਤਾਵਹੁ ਮੋਹਿ ॥੭॥

ਸਭੈ ਬਿਛੁਰਿ ਹੈਂ ਨਿਸੁਪਤਿ ਪ︀ਯਾਰੀ ॥੮॥
sabhai bichhur hain nisupat payaaree |8|
ਕਿਹ ਬਿਧਿ ਬਚੈ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਕੇ ਪ੍ਰਾਨਾ ॥
kih bidh bachai nripat ke praanaa |
ਪ੍ਰਾਤ ਕੀਜਿਯੈ ਸੋਈ ਬਿਧਾਨਾ ॥
praat keejiyai soee bidhaanaa |
ਤਹ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਕ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਇਕ ਕਰੈ ॥
teh triy kahiyo kriyaa ik karai |
ਤਬ ਮਰਬੇ ਤੇ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਉਬਰੈ ॥੯॥
tab marabe te nripat ubarai |9|
ਤ੍ਰਿਪੁਰ ਮਤੀ ਦਿਜਬਰ ਕਹ ਦੇਹੂ ॥
tripur matee dijabar keh dehoo |
ਡੋਰੀ ਨਿਜੁ ਕਾਧੇ ਕਰਿ ਲੇਹੂ ॥
ddoree nij kaadhe kar lehoo |
ਦਰਬ ਸਹਿਤ ਤਿਹ ਗ੍ਰਿਹਿ ਪਹੁਚਾਵੈ ॥
darab sahit tih grihi pahuchaavai |
ਤਬ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਨਿਕਟ ਕਾਲ ਨਹਿ ਆਵੈ ॥੧੦॥
tab nrip nikatt kaal neh aavai |10|
ਫੂਲਿ ਦੇਇ ਜੁ ਦੁਤਿਯ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਘਰ ਮੈ ॥
fool dee ju dutiy triy ghar mai |
ਤਿਹ ਦੇਵੈ ਚੰਡਾਰਹਿ ਕਰ ਮੈ ॥
tih devai chanddaareh kar mai |
ਤ੍ਰਿਪੁਰ ਮਤੀ ਕਹ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਨ ਬੁਲਾਵੈ ॥
