Maajh, Third Mehl:
ਏਕਾ ਜੋਤਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਹੈ ਸਰੀਰਾ ॥
ekaa jot jot hai sareeraa |
The One Light is the light of all bodies.
ਸਬਦਿ ਦਿਖਾਏ ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰਾ ॥
sabad dikhaae satigur pooraa |
The Perfect True Guru reveals it through the Word of the Shabad.
ਆਪੇ ਫਰਕੁ ਕੀਤੋਨੁ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
aape farak keeton ghatt antar aape banat banaavaniaa |1|
He Himself instills the sense of separation within our hearts; He Himself created the Creation. ||1||
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਸਚੇ ਕੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਣਿਆ ॥
hau vaaree jeeo vaaree har sache ke gun gaavaniaa |
I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who sing the Glorious Praises of the True Lord.
ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਕੋ ਸਹਜੁ ਨ ਪਾਏ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
baajh guroo ko sehaj na paae guramukh sehaj samaavaniaa |1| rahaau |
Without the Guru, no one obtains intuitive wisdom; the Gurmukh is absorbed in intuitive peace. ||1||Pause||
ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਸੋਹਹਿ ਆਪੇ ਜਗੁ ਮੋਹਹਿ ॥
toon aape soheh aape jag moheh |
You Yourself are Beautiful, and You Yourself entice the world.
ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਨਦਰੀ ਜਗਤੁ ਪਰੋਵਹਿ ॥
toon aape nadaree jagat paroveh |
You Yourself, by Your Kind Mercy, weave the thread of the world.
ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਦੁਖੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਦੇਵਹਿ ਕਰਤੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਖਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
toon aape dukh sukh deveh karate guramukh har dekhaavaniaa |2|
You Yourself bestow pain and pleasure, O Creator. The Lord reveals Himself to the Gurmukh. ||2||
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ॥
aape karataa kare karaae |
The Creator Himself acts, and causes others to act.
ਆਪੇ ਸਬਦੁ ਗੁਰ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
aape sabad gur man vasaae |
Through Him, the Word of the Guru's Shabad is enshrined within the mind.
ਸਬਦੇ ਉਪਜੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਬਾਣੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
sabade upajai amrit baanee guramukh aakh sunaavaniaa |3|
The Ambrosial Word of the Guru's Bani emanates from the Word of the Shabad. The Gurmukh speaks it and hears it. ||3||
ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਭੁਗਤਾ ॥
aape karataa aape bhugataa |
He Himself is the Creator, and He Himself is the Enjoyer.
ਬੰਧਨ ਤੋੜੇ ਸਦਾ ਹੈ ਮੁਕਤਾ ॥
bandhan torre sadaa hai mukataa |
One who breaks out of bondage is liberated forever.
ਸਦਾ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਆਪੇ ਹੈ ਸਚਾ ਆਪੇ ਅਲਖੁ ਲਖਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
sadaa mukat aape hai sachaa aape alakh lakhaavaniaa |4|
The True Lord is liberated forever. The Unseen Lord causes Himself to be seen. ||4||
ਆਪੇ ਮਾਇਆ ਆਪੇ ਛਾਇਆ ॥
aape maaeaa aape chhaaeaa |
He Himself is Maya, and He Himself is the Illusion.
ਆਪੇ ਮੋਹੁ ਸਭੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
aape mohu sabh jagat upaaeaa |
He Himself has generated emotional attachment throughout the entire universe.
ਆਪੇ ਗੁਣਦਾਤਾ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਆਪੇ ਆਖਿ ਸੁਣਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
aape gunadaataa gun gaavai aape aakh sunaavaniaa |5|
He Himself is the Giver of Virtue; He Himself sings the Lord's Glorious Praises. He chants them and causes them to be heard. ||5||
ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ਆਪੇ ॥
aape kare karaae aape |
He Himself acts, and causes others to act.
ਆਪੇ ਥਾਪਿ ਉਥਾਪੇ ਆਪੇ ॥
aape thaap uthaape aape |
He Himself establishes and disestablishes.
ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਹੋਵੈ ਤੂੰ ਆਪੇ ਕਾਰੈ ਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
tujh te baahar kachhoo na hovai toon aape kaarai laavaniaa |6|
Without You, nothing can be done. You Yourself have engaged all in their tasks. ||6||
ਆਪੇ ਮਾਰੇ ਆਪਿ ਜੀਵਾਏ ॥
aape maare aap jeevaae |
He Himself kills, and He Himself revives.
ਆਪੇ ਮੇਲੇ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
aape mele mel milaae |
He Himself unites us, and unites us in Union with Himself.
ਸੇਵਾ ਤੇ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
sevaa te sadaa sukh paaeaa guramukh sehaj samaavaniaa |7|
Through selfless service, eternal peace is obtained. The Gurmukh is absorbed in intuitive peace. ||7||
ਆਪੇ ਊਚਾ ਊਚੋ ਹੋਈ ॥
aape aoochaa aoocho hoee |
He Himself is the Highest of the High.
ਜਿਸੁ ਆਪਿ ਵਿਖਾਲੇ ਸੁ ਵੇਖੈ ਕੋਈ ॥
jis aap vikhaale su vekhai koee |
How rare are those who behold Him. He causes Himself to be seen.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਵਸੈ ਘਟ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਆਪੇ ਵੇਖਿ ਵਿਖਾਲਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੨੬॥੨੭॥
naanak naam vasai ghatt antar aape vekh vikhaalaniaa |8|26|27|
O Nanak, the Naam, the Name of the Lord, abides deep within the hearts of those who see the Lord themselves, and inspire others to see Him as well. ||8||26||27||
ਸਟ ਪਈ ਜਮਧਾਣੀ ਦਲਾਂ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ ॥
satt pee jamadhaanee dalaan mukaabalaa |
When the trumpet enveloped by the hide of the male buffalo, the vehicle of Yama, sounded, the armies attacked each other.
ਘੂਮਰ ਬਰਗ ਸਤਾਣੀ ਦਲ ਵਿਚਿ ਘਤੀਓ ॥
ghoomar barag sataanee dal vich ghateeo |
(The goddess) was the cause of flight and consternation in the battlefield.
ਸਣੇ ਤੁਰਾ ਪਲਾਣੀ ਡਿਗਣ ਸੂਰਮੇ ॥
sane turaa palaanee ddigan soorame |
The warriors fall alongwith their horses and saddles.
ਉਠਿ ਉਠਿ ਮੰਗਣਿ ਪਾਣੀ ਘਾਇਲ ਘੂਮਦੇ ॥
autth utth mangan paanee ghaaeil ghoomade |
The wounded ones arise and ask for water while roaming.
ਏਵਡੁ ਮਾਰਿ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ਉਪਰ ਰਾਕਸਾਂ ॥
evadd maar vihaanee upar raakasaan |
Such a great calamity fell on the demons.
ਬਿਜਲ ਜਿਉ ਝਰਲਾਣੀ ਉਠੀ ਦੇਵਤਾ ॥੩੬॥
bijal jiau jharalaanee utthee devataa |36|
From this side the goddess rose like thundering lightning.36.

ਚੋਬੀ ਧਉਸ ਉਭਾਰੀ ਦਲਾਂ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ ॥
chobee dhaus ubhaaree dalaan mukaabalaa |
The drummer sounded the trumpet and the armies attacked each other.
ਸਭੋ ਸੈਨਾ ਮਾਰੀ ਪਲ ਵਿਚਿ ਦਾਨਵੀ ॥
sabho sainaa maaree pal vich daanavee |
All the army of the demons was killed in an instant.
ਦੁਰਗਾ ਦਾਨੋ ਮਾਰੇ ਰੋਹ ਬਢਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
duragaa daano maare roh badtaae kai |
Highly infuriated, Durga killed the demons.
ਸਿਰ ਵਿਚ ਤੇਗ ਵਗਾਈ ਸ੍ਰਣਵਤ ਬੀਜ ਦੇ ॥੩੭॥
sir vich teg vagaaee sranavat beej de |37|
She struck the sword on the head of Sranwat Beej.37.
ਅਗਣਤ ਦਾਨੋ ਭਾਰੇ ਹੋਏ ਲੋਹੂਆ ॥
aganat daano bhaare hoe lohooaa |
Innumerable mighty demons were steeped in blood.
ਜੋਧੇ ਜੇਡ ਮੁਨਾਰੇ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਖੇਤ ਦੈ ॥
jodhe jedd munaare andar khet dai |
Those minarets-like demons in the battlefield
ਦੁਰਗਾ ਨੋ ਲਲਕਾਰੇ ਆਵਣ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ॥
duragaa no lalakaare aavan saahamane |
They challenged Durga and came in front of her.
ਦੁਰਗਾ ਸਭ ਸੰਘਾਰੇ ਰਾਕਸ ਆਂਵਦੇ ॥
duragaa sabh sanghaare raakas aanvade |
Durga killed all the coming demons.
ਰਤੂ ਦੇ ਪਰਨਾਲੇ ਤਿਨ ਤੇ ਭੁਇ ਪਏ ॥
ratoo de paranaale tin te bhue pe |
From their bodies the drains of blood fell on the ground.
ਉਠੇ ਕਾਰਣਿਆਰੇ ਰਾਕਸ ਹੜਹੜਾਇ ॥੩੮॥
autthe kaaraniaare raakas harraharraae |38|
Some of the active demons arise out of them laughingly.38.
ਧਗਾ ਸੰਗਲੀਆਲੀ ਸੰਘਰ ਵਾਇਆ ॥
dhagaa sangaleeaalee sanghar vaaeaa |
The enchained trumpets and bugles sounded.
ਬਰਛੀ ਬੰਬਲੀਆਲੀ ਸੂਰੇ ਸੰਘਰੇ ॥
barachhee banbaleeaalee soore sanghare |
The warriors fought with daggers bedecked with tassels.
ਭੇੜਿ ਮਚਿਆ ਬੀਰਾਲੀ ਦੁਰਗਾ ਦਾਨਵੀਂ ॥
bherr machiaa beeraalee duragaa daanaveen |
The war of bravery was waged between Durga and demos.
ਮਾਰ ਮਚੀ ਮੁਹਰਾਲੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਖੇਤ ਦੈ ॥
maar machee muharaalee andar khet dai |
There had been extreme destruction in the battlefield.
ਜਣ ਨਟ ਲਥੇ ਛਾਲੀ ਢੋਲਿ ਬਜਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
jan natt lathe chhaalee dtol bajaae kai |
It appears that the actors, sounding their drum, have jumped into the war-arena.
ਲੋਹੂ ਫਾਥੀ ਜਾਲੀ ਲੋਥੀ ਜਮਧੜੀ ॥
lohoo faathee jaalee lothee jamadharree |
The dagger penetrated in the corpse seems like a blood stained fish entrapped in the net.
ਘਣ ਵਿਚਿ ਜਿਉ ਛੰਛਾਲੀ ਤੇਗਾਂ ਹਸੀਆਂ ॥
ghan vich jiau chhanchhaalee tegaan haseean |
The swords glistened like the lightning in the clouds.
ਘੁਮਰਆਰ ਸਿਆਲੀ ਬਣੀਆਂ ਕੇਜਮਾਂ ॥੩੯॥
ghumaraar siaalee baneean kejamaan |39|
The swords have covered (the battlefield) like the winter-fog.39.
ਧਗਾ ਸੂਲੀ ਬਜਾਈਆਂ ਦਲਾਂ ਮੁਕਾਬਲਾ ॥
dhagaa soolee bajaaeean dalaan mukaabalaa |
The trumpets were sounded with the beating of drum-stick and the armies attacked each other.
ਧੂਹਿ ਮਿਆਨੋ ਲਈਆਂ ਜੁਆਨੀ ਸੂਰਮੀ ॥
dhoohi miaano leean juaanee sooramee |
The youthful warriors pulled out their swords from their scabbards.
ਸ੍ਰਣਵਤ ਬੀਜ ਬਧਾਈਆਂ ਅਗਣਤ ਸੂਰਤਾਂ ॥
sranavat beej badhaaeean aganat soorataan |
Sranwat Beej increased himself into innumerable forms.
ਦੁਰਗਾ ਸਉਹੇਂ ਆਈਆਂ ਰੋਹ ਬਢਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
duragaa sauhen aaeean roh badtaae kai |
Which came in front of Durga, highly enraged.
ਸਭਨੀ ਆਣ ਵਗਾਈਆਂ ਤੇਗਾਂ ਧੂਹ ਕੈ ॥
sabhanee aan vagaaeean tegaan dhooh kai |
All of them pulled out their swords and struck.
ਦੁਰਗਾ ਸਭ ਬਚਾਈਆਂ ਢਾਲ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕੈ ॥
duragaa sabh bachaaeean dtaal sanbhaal kai |
Durga saved herself from all, holding her shield carefully.
ਦੇਵੀ ਆਪ ਚਲਾਈਆਂ ਤਕਿ ਤਕਿ ਦਾਨਵੀ ॥
devee aap chalaaeean tak tak daanavee |
The goddess herself then struck her sword looking carefully toward the demons.
ਲੋਹੂ ਨਾਲਿ ਡੁਬਾਈਆਂ ਤੇਗਾਂ ਨੰਗੀਆਂ ॥
lohoo naal ddubaaeean tegaan nangeean |
She steeped her naked swords in blood.
ਸਾਰਸੁਤੀ ਜਨੁ ਨਾਈਆਂ ਮਿਲ ਕੈ ਦੇਵੀਆਂ ॥
saarasutee jan naaeean mil kai deveean |
It appeared that the goddesses gathering together, took their bath in river Saraswati.
ਸਭੇ ਮਾਰ ਗਿਰਾਈਆਂ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਖੇਤ ਦੈ ॥
sabhe maar giraaeean andar khet dai |
The goddess hath killed and thrown on the ground in the battlefield (all the forms of Sranwat Beej).
ਤਿਦੂੰ ਫੇਰਿ ਸਵਾਈਆਂ ਹੋਈਆਂ ਸੂਰਤਾਂ ॥੪੦॥
tidoon fer savaaeean hoeean soorataan |40|
Immediately then the forms again increased greatly.40.

ਸੂਰੀ ਸੰਘਰਿ ਰਚਿਆ ਢੋਲ ਸੰਖ ਨਗਾਰੇ ਵਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
sooree sanghar rachiaa dtol sankh nagaare vaae kai |
Sounding their drums, conches and trumpets, the warriors have begun the war.
ਚੰਡ ਚਿਤਾਰੀ ਕਾਲਕਾ ਮਨ ਬਾਹਲਾ ਰੋਸ ਬਢਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
chandd chitaaree kaalakaa man baahalaa ros badtaae kai |
Chandi, being highly enraged, remembered Kali in her mind.
ਨਿਕਲੀ ਮਥਾ ਫੋੜਿ ਕੈ ਜਨ ਫਤੇ ਨੀਸਾਣ ਬਜਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
nikalee mathaa forr kai jan fate neesaan bajaae kai |
She came out shattering the forehead of Chandi, sounding the trumpet and flying flag of victory.
ਜਾਗ ਸੁ ਜੰਮੀ ਜੁਧ ਨੂੰ ਜਰਵਾਣਾ ਜਣ ਮਰੜਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
jaag su jamee judh noo jaravaanaa jan mararraae kai |
On manifesting herself, she marched for war, like Bir Bhadra manifesting from Shiva.
ਦਲ ਵਿਚਿ ਘੇਰਾ ਘਤਿਆ ਜਣ ਸੀਂਹ ਤੁਰਿਆ ਗਣਿਣਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
dal vich gheraa ghatiaa jan seenh turiaa ganinaae kai |
The battlefield was surrounded by her and she seemed moving like a roaring lion.
ਆਪ ਵਿਸੂਲਾ ਹੋਇਆ ਤਿਹੁ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਤੇ ਖੁਨਸਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
aap visoolaa hoeaa tihu lokaan te khunasaae kai |
(The demon-king) himself was in great anguish, while exhibiting his anger over the three worlds.
ਰੋਹ ਸਿਧਾਇਆਂ ਚਕ੍ਰ ਪਾਨ ਕਰ ਨਿੰਦਾ ਖੜਗ ਉਠਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
roh sidhaaeaan chakr paan kar nindaa kharrag utthaae kai |
Durga, being enraged, hath marched, holding her disc in her hand and raising her sword.
ਅਗੈ ਰਾਕਸ ਬੈਠੇ ਰੋਹਲੇ ਤੀਰੀ ਤੇਗੀ ਛਹਬਰ ਲਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
agai raakas baitthe rohale teeree tegee chhahabar laae kai |
There before her there were infuriated demons, she caught and knocked down the demons.
ਪਕੜ ਪਛਾੜੇ ਰਾਕਸਾਂ ਦਲ ਦੈਤਾਂ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
pakarr pachhaarre raakasaan dal daitaan andar jaae kai |
Going within the forces of demons, she caught and knocked down the demons.
ਬਹੁ ਕੇਸੀ ਪਕੜਿ ਪਛਾੜਿਅਨਿ ਤਿਨ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਧੂਮ ਰਚਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
bahu kesee pakarr pachhaarrian tin andar dhoom rachaae kai |
She threw down by catching them from their hair and raising a tumult among their forces.
ਬਡੇ ਬਡੇ ਚੁਣ ਸੂਰਮੇ ਗਹਿ ਕੋਟੀ ਦਏ ਚਲਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
badde badde chun soorame geh kottee de chalaae kai |
She picked up mighty fighters by catching them with the corner of her bow and throwing them
ਰਣ ਕਾਲੀ ਗੁਸਾ ਖਾਇ ਕੈ ॥੪੧॥
ran kaalee gusaa khaae kai |41|
In her fury, Kali hath done this in the battlefield.41.
