Maajh, Third Mehl:
ਇਸੁ ਗੁਫਾ ਮਹਿ ਅਖੁਟ ਭੰਡਾਰਾ ॥
eis gufaa meh akhutt bhanddaaraa |
Within this cave, there is an inexhaustible treasure.
ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਵਸੈ ਹਰਿ ਅਲਖ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥
tis vich vasai har alakh apaaraa |
Within this cave, the Invisible and Infinite Lord abides.
ਆਪੇ ਗੁਪਤੁ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੈ ਆਪੇ ਗੁਰਸਬਦੀ ਆਪੁ ਵੰਞਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
aape gupat paragatt hai aape gurasabadee aap vanyaavaniaa |1|
He Himself is hidden, and He Himself is revealed; through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, selfishness and conceit are eliminated. ||1||
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥
hau vaaree jeeo vaaree amrit naam man vasaavaniaa |
I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who enshrine the Ambrosial Naam, the Name of the Lord, within their minds.
ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਮੀਠਾ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਆਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
amrit naam mahaa ras meetthaa guramatee amrit peeaavaniaa |1| rahaau |
The taste of the Ambrosial Naam is very sweet! Through the Guru's Teachings, drink in this Ambrosial Nectar. ||1||Pause||
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਬਜਰ ਕਪਾਟ ਖੁਲਾਇਆ ॥
haumai maar bajar kapaatt khulaaeaa |
Subduing egotism, the rigid doors are opened.
ਨਾਮੁ ਅਮੋਲਕੁ ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
naam amolak gur parasaadee paaeaa |
The Priceless Naam is obtained by Guru's Grace.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਪਾਏ ਕੋਈ ਗੁਰ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
bin sabadai naam na paae koee gur kirapaa man vasaavaniaa |2|
Without the Shabad, the Naam is not obtained. By Guru's Grace, it is implanted within the mind. ||2||
ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਸਚੁ ਨੇਤ੍ਰੀ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
gur giaan anjan sach netree paaeaa |
The Guru has applied the true ointment of spiritual wisdom to my eyes.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਚਾਨਣੁ ਅਗਿਆਨੁ ਅੰਧੇਰੁ ਗਵਾਇਆ ॥
antar chaanan agiaan andher gavaaeaa |
Deep within, the Divine Light has dawned, and the darkness of ignorance has been dispelled.
ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲੀ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
jotee jot milee man maaniaa har dar sobhaa paavaniaa |3|
My light has merged into the Light; my mind has surrendered, and I am blessed with Glory in the Court of the Lord. ||3||
ਸਰੀਰਹੁ ਭਾਲਣਿ ਕੋ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਜਾਏ ॥
sareerahu bhaalan ko baahar jaae |
Those who look outside the body, searching for the Lord,
ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਲਹੈ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਵੇਗਾਰਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
naam na lahai bahut vegaar dukh paae |
Shall not receive the Naam; they shall instead be forced to suffer the terrible pains of slavery.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧੇ ਸੂਝੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਫਿਰਿ ਘਿਰਿ ਆਇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਥੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
manamukh andhe soojhai naahee fir ghir aae guramukh vath paavaniaa |4|
The blind, self-willed manmukhs do not understand; but when they return once again to their own home, then, as Gurmukh, they find the genuine article. ||4||
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਸਚਾ ਹਰਿ ਪਾਏ ॥
gur parasaadee sachaa har paae |
By Guru's Grace, the True Lord is found.
ਮਨਿ ਤਨਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਹਉਮੈ ਮੈਲੁ ਜਾਏ ॥
man tan vekhai haumai mail jaae |
Within your mind and body, see the Lord, and the filth of egotism shall depart.
ਬੈਸਿ ਸੁਥਾਨਿ ਸਦ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਸਚੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
bais suthaan sad har gun gaavai sachai sabad samaavaniaa |5|
Sitting in that place, sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord forever, and be absorbed in the True Word of the Shabad. ||5||
ਨਉ ਦਰ ਠਾਕੇ ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਹਾਏ ॥
nau dar tthaake dhaavat rahaae |
Those who close off the nine gates, and restrain the wandering mind,
ਦਸਵੈ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ਪਾਏ ॥
dasavai nij ghar vaasaa paae |
come to dwell in the Home of the Tenth Gate.
ਓਥੈ ਅਨਹਦ ਸਬਦ ਵਜਹਿ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
othai anahad sabad vajeh din raatee guramatee sabad sunaavaniaa |6|
There, the Unstruck Melody of the Shabad vibrates day and night. Through the Guru's Teachings, the Shabad is heard. ||6||
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਆਨੇਰਾ ॥
bin sabadai antar aaneraa |
Without the Shabad, there is only darkness within.
ਨ ਵਸਤੁ ਲਹੈ ਨ ਚੂਕੈ ਫੇਰਾ ॥
n vasat lahai na chookai feraa |
The genuine article is not found, and the cycle of reincarnation does not end.
ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਹਥਿ ਕੁੰਜੀ ਹੋਰਤੁ ਦਰੁ ਖੁਲੈ ਨਾਹੀ ਗੁਰੁ ਪੂਰੈ ਭਾਗਿ ਮਿਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
satigur hath kunjee horat dar khulai naahee gur poorai bhaag milaavaniaa |7|
The key is in the hands of the True Guru; no one else can open this door. By perfect destiny, He is met. ||7||
ਗੁਪਤੁ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨੀ ਥਾਈ ॥
gupat paragatt toon sabhanee thaaee |
You are the hidden and the revealed in all places.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਸੋਝੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
gur parasaadee mil sojhee paaee |
Receiving Guru's Grace, this understanding is obtained.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਲਾਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਤੂੰ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੨੪॥੨੫॥
naanak naam salaeh sadaa toon guramukh man vasaavaniaa |8|24|25|
O Nanak, praise the Naam forever; as Gurmukh, enshrine it within the mind. ||8||24||25||

Maajh, Third Mehl:
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਆਪੇ ॥
guramukh milai milaae aape |
The Gurmukhs meet the Lord, and inspire others to meet Him as well.
ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਜੋਹੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਨ ਸੰਤਾਪੇ ॥
kaal na johai dukh na santaape |
Death does not see them, and pain does not afflict them.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਬੰਧਨ ਸਭ ਤੋੜੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥
haumai maar bandhan sabh torrai guramukh sabad suhaavaniaa |1|
Subduing egotism, they break all their bonds; as Gurmukh, they are adorned with the Word of the Shabad. ||1||
ਹਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਜੀਉ ਵਾਰੀ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਹਾਵਣਿਆ ॥
hau vaaree jeeo vaaree har har naam suhaavaniaa |
I am a sacrifice, my soul is a sacrifice, to those who look beautiful in the Name of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਚੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੇਤੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
guramukh gaavai guramukh naachai har setee chit laavaniaa |1| rahaau |
The Gurmukhs sing, the Gurmukhs dance, and focus their consciousness on the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੀਵੈ ਮਰੈ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
guramukh jeevai marai paravaan |
The Gurmukhs are celebrated in life and death.
ਆਰਜਾ ਨ ਛੀਜੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥
aarajaa na chheejai sabad pachhaan |
Their lives are not wasted; they realize the Word of the Shabad.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਖਾਏ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੨॥
guramukh marai na kaal na khaae guramukh sach samaavaniaa |2|
The Gurmukhs do not die; they are not consumed by death. The Gurmukhs are absorbed in the True Lord. ||2||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਰਿ ਦਰਿ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਏ ॥
guramukh har dar sobhaa paae |
The Gurmukhs are honored in the Court of the Lord.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
guramukh vichahu aap gavaae |
The Gurmukhs eradicate selfishness and conceit from within.
ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਕੁਲ ਸਗਲੇ ਤਾਰੇ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਨਮੁ ਸਵਾਰਣਿਆ ॥੩॥
aap tarai kul sagale taare guramukh janam savaaraniaa |3|
They save themselves, and save all their families and ancestors as well. The Gurmukhs redeem their lives. ||3||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਕਦੇ ਨ ਲਗੈ ਸਰੀਰਿ ॥
guramukh dukh kade na lagai sareer |
The Gurmukhs never suffer bodily pain.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਚੂਕੈ ਪੀਰ ॥
guramukh haumai chookai peer |
The Gurmukhs have the pain of egotism taken away.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨੁ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਮੈਲੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੪॥
guramukh man niramal fir mail na laagai guramukh sehaj samaavaniaa |4|
The minds of the Gurmukhs are immaculate and pure; no filth ever sticks to them again. The Gurmukhs merge in celestial peace. ||4||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
guramukh naam milai vaddiaaee |
The Gurmukhs obtain the Greatness of the Naam.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਸੋਭਾ ਪਾਈ ॥
guramukh gun gaavai sobhaa paaee |
The Gurmukhs sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and obtain honor.
ਸਦਾ ਅਨੰਦਿ ਰਹੈ ਦਿਨੁ ਰਾਤੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਕਰਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੫॥
sadaa anand rahai din raatee guramukh sabad karaavaniaa |5|
They remain in bliss forever, day and night. The Gurmukhs practice the Word of the Shabad. ||5||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੇ ਰਾਤਾ ॥
guramukh anadin sabade raataa |
The Gurmukhs are attuned to the Shabad, night and day.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਹੈ ਜਾਤਾ ॥
guramukh jug chaare hai jaataa |
The Gurmukhs are known throughout the four ages.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵੈ ਸਦਾ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਸਬਦੇ ਭਗਤਿ ਕਰਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੬॥
guramukh gun gaavai sadaa niramal sabade bhagat karaavaniaa |6|
The Gurmukhs always sing the Glorious Praises of the Immaculate Lord. Through the Shabad, they practice devotional worship. ||6||
ਬਾਝੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਅੰਧ ਅੰਧਾਰਾ ॥
baajh guroo hai andh andhaaraa |
Without the Guru, there is only pitch-black darkness.
ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ਗਰਠੇ ਕਰਹਿ ਪੁਕਾਰਾ ॥
jamakaal garatthe kareh pukaaraa |
Seized by the Messenger of Death, people cry out and scream.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਰੋਗੀ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਕੇ ਕੀੜੇ ਬਿਸਟਾ ਮਹਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੭॥
anadin rogee bisattaa ke keerre bisattaa meh dukh paavaniaa |7|
Night and day, they are diseased, like maggots in manure, and in manure they endure agony. ||7||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਆਪੇ ਕਰੇ ਕਰਾਏ ॥
guramukh aape kare karaae |
The Gurmukhs know that the Lord alone acts, and causes others to act.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਵੁਠਾ ਆਪਿ ਆਏ ॥
guramukh hiradai vutthaa aap aae |
In the hearts of the Gurmukhs, the Lord Himself comes to dwell.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਪੂਰੇ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਪਾਵਣਿਆ ॥੮॥੨੫॥੨੬॥
naanak naam milai vaddiaaee poore gur te paavaniaa |8|25|26|
O Nanak, through the Naam, greatness is obtained. It is received from the Perfect Guru. ||8||25||26||
ਸੁੰਭ ਨਿਸੁੰਭ ਰਿਸਾਏ ਮਾਰੇ ਦੈਤ ਸੁਣ ॥
sunbh nisunbh risaae maare dait sun |
Sumbh and Nisumbh were highly enraged on hearing this killing.
ਜੋਧੇ ਸਭ ਬੁਲਾਏ ਆਪਣੀ ਮਜਲਸੀ ॥
jodhe sabh bulaae aapanee majalasee |
They called all the brave fighters, who were their advisers.
ਜਿਨੀ ਦੇਉ ਭਜਾਏ ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਜੇਵਹੇ ॥
jinee deo bhajaae indr jevahe |
Those who had caused the gods like Indra run away.
ਤੇਈ ਮਾਰ ਗਿਰਾਏ ਪਲ ਵਿਚ ਦੇਵਤਾ ॥
teee maar giraae pal vich devataa |
The goddess killed them in an instant.
ਓਨੀ ਦਸਤੀ ਦਸਤ ਵਜਾਏ ਤਿਨਾ ਚਿਤ ਕਰਿ ॥
onee dasatee dasat vajaae tinaa chit kar |
Keeping Chand Mund in their mind, they rubbed their hands in sorrow.
ਫਿਰ ਸ੍ਰਣਵਤ ਬੀਜ ਚਲਾਏ ਬੀੜੇ ਰਾਇ ਦੇ ॥
fir sranavat beej chalaae beerre raae de |
Then Sranwat Beej was prepared and sent by the king.
ਸੰਜ ਪਟੋਲਾ ਪਾਏ ਚਿਲਕਤ ਟੋਪੀਆਂ ॥
sanj pattolaa paae chilakat ttopeean |
He wore the armour with belts and the helmet which glistened.
ਲੁਝਣ ਨੋ ਅਰੜਾਏ ਰਾਕਸ ਰੋਹਲੇ ॥
lujhan no ararraae raakas rohale |
The infuriated demons shouted loudly for war.
ਕਦੇ ਨ ਕਿਨੇ ਹਟਾਏ ਜੁਧ ਮਚਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
kade na kine hattaae judh machaae kai |
After waging war, none could get their retreat.
ਮਿਲ ਤੇਈ ਦਾਨੋ ਆਏ ਹੁਣ ਸੰਘਰਿ ਦੇਖਣਾ ॥੩੩॥
mil teee daano aae hun sanghar dekhanaa |33|
Such demons have gathered together and come, now see the ensuing war.33.

ਦੈਤੀ ਡੰਡ ਉਭਾਰੀ ਨੇੜੈ ਆਇ ਕੈ ॥
daitee ddandd ubhaaree nerrai aae kai |
On coming near, the demons raised the din.
ਸਿੰਘ ਕਰੀ ਅਸਵਾਰੀ ਦੁਰਗਾ ਸੋਰ ਸੁਣ ॥
singh karee asavaaree duragaa sor sun |
Hearing this clamour, Durga mounted her lion.
ਖਬੇ ਦਸਤ ਉਭਾਰੀ ਗਦਾ ਫਿਰਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
khabe dasat ubhaaree gadaa firaae kai |
She twirled her mace, raising it with her left hand.
ਸੈਨਾ ਸਭ ਸੰਘਾਰੀ ਸ੍ਰਣਵਤ ਬੀਜ ਦੀ ॥
sainaa sabh sanghaaree sranavat beej dee |
She killed all the army of Sranwat Beej.
ਜਣ ਮਦ ਖਾਇ ਮਦਾਰੀ ਘੂਮਨ ਸੂਰਮੇ ॥
jan mad khaae madaaree ghooman soorame |
It appears that the warriors were roaming like the drug addicts taking drugs.
ਅਗਣਤ ਪਾਉ ਪਸਾਰੀ ਰੁਲੇ ਅਹਾੜ ਵਿਚਿ ॥
aganat paau pasaaree rule ahaarr vich |
Innumerable warriors are lying neglected in the battlefield, stretching their legs.
ਜਾਪੇ ਖੇਡ ਖਿਡਾਰੀ ਸੁਤੇ ਫਾਗ ਨੂੰ ॥੩੪॥
jaape khedd khiddaaree sute faag noo |34|
It seems that the revelers playing Holi are sleeping.34.
ਸ੍ਰਣਵਤ ਬੀਜ ਹਕਾਰੇ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਸੂਰਮੇ ॥
sranavat beej hakaare rahinde soorame |
Sranwat Beej called all the remaining warriors.
ਜੋਧੇ ਜੇਡ ਮੁਨਾਰੇ ਦਿਸਨ ਖੇਤ ਵਿਚਿ ॥
jodhe jedd munaare disan khet vich |
They seem like minarets in the battlefield.
ਸਭਨੀ ਦਸਤ ਉਭਾਰੇ ਤੇਗਾਂ ਧੂਹਿ ਕੈ ॥
sabhanee dasat ubhaare tegaan dhoohi kai |
All of them pulling their swords, raised their hands.
ਮਾਰੋ ਮਾਰ ਪੁਕਾਰੇ ਆਏ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ॥
maaro maar pukaare aae saahamane |
They came in front shouting “kill, kill”.
ਸੰਜਾਤੇ ਠਣਿਕਾਰੇ ਤੇਗੀਂ ਉਬਰੇ ॥
sanjaate tthanikaare tegeen ubare |
With the striking of swords on the armour, the clatter arises.
ਘਾੜ ਘੜਨਿ ਠਠਿਆਰੇ ਜਾਣਿ ਬਣਾਇ ਕੈ ॥੩੫॥
ghaarr gharran tthatthiaare jaan banaae kai |35|
It seems that the tinkers are fashioning the vessels with the blows of hammer.35.
