ਪਹਿਲੈ ਪਹਰੈ ਨੈਣ ਸਲੋਨੜੀਏ ਰੈਣਿ ਅੰਧਿਆਰੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
pahilai paharai nain salonarree rain andhiaaree raam |
In the first watch of the dark night, O bride of splendored eyes,
ਵਖਰੁ ਰਾਖੁ ਮੁਈਏ ਆਵੈ ਵਾਰੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
vakhar raakh mueee aavai vaaree raam |
protect your riches; your turn is coming soon.
ਵਾਰੀ ਆਵੈ ਕਵਣੁ ਜਗਾਵੈ ਸੂਤੀ ਜਮ ਰਸੁ ਚੂਸਏ ॥
vaaree aavai kavan jagaavai sootee jam ras choose |
When your turn comes, who will wake you? While you sleep, your juice shall be sucked out by the Messenger of Death.
ਰੈਣਿ ਅੰਧੇਰੀ ਕਿਆ ਪਤਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਚੋਰੁ ਪੜੈ ਘਰੁ ਮੂਸਏ ॥

The night is so dark; what will become of your honor? The thieves will break into your home and rob you.
ਰਾਖਣਹਾਰਾ ਅਗਮ ਅਪਾਰਾ ਸੁਣਿ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਮੇਰੀਆ ॥

O Saviour Lord, Inaccessible and Infinite, please hear my prayer.
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਕਬਹਿ ਨ ਚੇਤੈ ਕਿਆ ਸੂਝੈ ਰੈਣਿ ਅੰਧੇਰੀਆ ॥੧॥
naanak moorakh kabeh na chetai kiaa soojhai rain andhereea |1|
O Nanak, the fool never remembers Him; what can he see in the dark of night? ||1||
ਦੂਜਾ ਪਹਰੁ ਭਇਆ ਜਾਗੁ ਅਚੇਤੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
doojaa pehar bheaa jaag achetee raam |
The second watch has begun; wake up, you unconscious being!
ਵਖਰੁ ਰਾਖੁ ਮੁਈਏ ਖਾਜੈ ਖੇਤੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
vakhar raakh mueee khaajai khetee raam |
Protect your riches, O mortal; your farm is being eaten.
ਰਾਖਹੁ ਖੇਤੀ ਹਰਿ ਗੁਰ ਹੇਤੀ ਜਾਗਤ ਚੋਰੁ ਨ ਲਾਗੈ ॥
raakhahu khetee har gur hetee jaagat chor na laagai |
Protect your crops, and love the Lord, the Guru. Stay awake and aware, and the thieves shall not rob you.
ਜਮ ਮਗਿ ਨ ਜਾਵਹੁ ਨਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਜਮ ਕਾ ਡਰੁ ਭਉ ਭਾਗੈ ॥
jam mag na jaavahu naa dukh paavahu jam kaa ddar bhau bhaagai |
You shall not have to go on the path of Death, and you shall not suffer in pain; your fear and terror of death shall run away.
ਰਵਿ ਸਸਿ ਦੀਪਕ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਦੁਆਰੈ ਮਨਿ ਸਾਚਾ ਮੁਖਿ ਧਿਆਵਏ ॥
rav sas deepak guramat duaarai man saachaa mukh dhiaave |
The lamps of the sun and the moon are lit by the Guru's Teachings, through His Door, meditating on the True Lord, in the mind and with the mouth.
ਨਾਨਕ ਮੂਰਖੁ ਅਜਹੁ ਨ ਚੇਤੈ ਕਿਵ ਦੂਜੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵਏ ॥੨॥
naanak moorakh ajahu na chetai kiv doojai sukh paave |2|
O Nanak, the fool still does not remember the Lord. How can he find peace in duality? ||2||
ਤੀਜਾ ਪਹਰੁ ਭਇਆ ਨੀਦ ਵਿਆਪੀ ਰਾਮ ॥

The third watch has begun, and sleep has set in.
ਮਾਇਆ ਸੁਤ ਦਾਰਾ ਦੂਖਿ ਸੰਤਾਪੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
maaeaa sut daaraa dookh santaapee raam |
The mortal suffers in pain, from attachment to Maya, children and spouse.
ਮਾਇਆ ਸੁਤ ਦਾਰਾ ਜਗਤ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਚੋਗ ਚੁਗੈ ਨਿਤ ਫਾਸੈ ॥
maaeaa sut daaraa jagat piaaraa chog chugai nit faasai |
Maya, his children, his wife and the world are so dear to him; he bites the bait, and is caught.
ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਵੈ ਤਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਗ੍ਰਾਸੈ ॥
naam dhiaavai taa sukh paavai guramat kaal na graasai |
Meditating on the Naam, the Name of the Lord, he shall find peace; following the Guru's Teachings, he shall not be seized by death.
ਜੰਮਣੁ ਮਰਣੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਨਹੀ ਛੋਡੈ ਵਿਣੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਸੰਤਾਪੀ ॥
jaman maran kaal nahee chhoddai vin naavai santaapee |
He cannot escape from birth, dying and death; without the Name, he suffers.
ਨਾਨਕ ਤੀਜੈ ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਲੋਕਾ ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਵਿਆਪੀ ॥੩॥
naanak teejai tribidh lokaa maaeaa mohi viaapee |3|
O Nanak, in the third watch of the three-phased Maya, the world is engrossed in attachment to Maya. ||3||
ਚਉਥਾ ਪਹਰੁ ਭਇਆ ਦਉਤੁ ਬਿਹਾਗੈ ਰਾਮ ॥
chauthaa pehar bheaa daut bihaagai raam |
The fourth watch has begun, and the day is about to dawn.
ਤਿਨ ਘਰੁ ਰਾਖਿਅੜਾ ਜੋੁ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗੈ ਰਾਮ ॥
tin ghar raakhiarraa jo anadin jaagai raam |
Those who remain awake and aware, night and day, preserve and protect their homes.
ਗੁਰ ਪੂਛਿ ਜਾਗੇ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਾਗੇ ਤਿਨਾ ਰੈਣਿ ਸੁਹੇਲੀਆ ॥
gur poochh jaage naam laage tinaa rain suheleea |
The night is pleasant and peaceful, for those who remain awake; following the Guru's advice, they focus on the Naam.
ਗੁਰਸਬਦੁ ਕਮਾਵਹਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਨ ਆਵਹਿ ਤਿਨਾ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਬੇਲੀਆ ॥
gurasabad kamaaveh janam na aaveh tinaa har prabh beleea |
Those who practice the Word of the Guru's Shabad are not reincarnated again; the Lord God is their Best Friend.
ਕਰ ਕੰਪਿ ਚਰਣ ਸਰੀਰੁ ਕੰਪੈ ਨੈਣ ਅੰਧੁਲੇ ਤਨੁ ਭਸਮ ਸੇ ॥
kar kanp charan sareer kanpai nain andhule tan bhasam se |
The hands shake, the feet and body totter, the vision goes dark, and the body turns to dust.
ਨਾਨਕ ਦੁਖੀਆ ਜੁਗ ਚਾਰੇ ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਮ ਹਰਿ ਕੇ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੇ ॥੪॥
naanak dukheea jug chaare bin naam har ke man vase |4|
O Nanak, people are miserable throughout the four ages, if the Name of the Lord does not abide in the mind. ||4||
ਖੂਲੀ ਗੰਠਿ ਉਠੋ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਆਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
khoolee gantth uttho likhiaa aaeaa raam |
The knot has been untied; rise up - the order has come!
ਰਸ ਕਸ ਸੁਖ ਠਾਕੇ ਬੰਧਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
ras kas sukh tthaake bandh chalaaeaa raam |
Pleasures and comforts are gone; like a prisoner, you are driven on.
ਬੰਧਿ ਚਲਾਇਆ ਜਾ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਾਇਆ ਨਾ ਦੀਸੈ ਨਾ ਸੁਣੀਐ ॥
bandh chalaaeaa jaa prabh bhaaeaa naa deesai naa suneeai |
You shall be bound and gagged, when it pleases God; you will not see or hear it coming.
ਆਪਣ ਵਾਰੀ ਸਭਸੈ ਆਵੈ ਪਕੀ ਖੇਤੀ ਲੁਣੀਐ ॥
aapan vaaree sabhasai aavai pakee khetee luneeai |
Everyone will have their turn; the crop ripens, and then it is cut down.
ਘੜੀ ਚਸੇ ਕਾ ਲੇਖਾ ਲੀਜੈ ਬੁਰਾ ਭਲਾ ਸਹੁ ਜੀਆ ॥
gharree chase kaa lekhaa leejai buraa bhalaa sahu jeea |
The account is kept for every second, every instant; the soul suffers for the bad and the good.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ਤਿਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕੀਆ ॥੫॥੨॥
naanak sur nar sabad milaae tin prabh kaaran keea |5|2|
O Nanak, the angelic beings are united with the Word of the Shabad; this is the way God made it. ||5||2||

ਤਾਰਾ ਚੜਿਆ ਲੰਮਾ ਕਿਉ ਨਦਰਿ ਨਿਹਾਲਿਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
taaraa charriaa lamaa kiau nadar nihaaliaa raam |
The meteor shoots across the sky. How can it be seen with the eyes?
ਸੇਵਕ ਪੂਰ ਕਰੰਮਾ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਦਿਖਾਲਿਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
sevak poor karamaa satigur sabad dikhaaliaa raam |
The True Guru reveals the Word of the Shabad to His servant who has such perfect karma.
ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਦਿਖਾਲਿਆ ਸਚੁ ਸਮਾਲਿਆ ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਆ ॥
gur sabad dikhaaliaa sach samaaliaa ahinis dekh beechaariaa |
The Guru reveals the Shabad; dwelling on the True Lord, day and night, he beholds and reflects on God.
ਧਾਵਤ ਪੰਚ ਰਹੇ ਘਰੁ ਜਾਣਿਆ ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਬਿਖੁ ਮਾਰਿਆ ॥
dhaavat panch rahe ghar jaaniaa kaam krodh bikh maariaa |
The five restless desires are restrained, and he knows the home of his own heart. He conquers sexual desire, anger and corruption.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਭਈ ਗੁਰ ਸਾਖੀ ਚੀਨੇ ਰਾਮ ਕਰੰਮਾ ॥
antar jot bhee gur saakhee cheene raam karamaa |
His inner being is illuminated, by the Guru's Teachings; He beholds the Lord's play of karma.
ਨਾਨਕ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਪਤੀਣੇ ਤਾਰਾ ਚੜਿਆ ਲੰਮਾ ॥੧॥
naanak haumai maar pateene taaraa charriaa lamaa |1|
O Nanak, killing his ego, he is satisfied; the meteor has shot across the sky. ||1||
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਗਿ ਰਹੇ ਚੂਕੀ ਅਭਿਮਾਨੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
guramukh jaag rahe chookee abhimaanee raam |
The Gurmukhs remain awake and aware; their egotistical pride is eradicated.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਭੋਰੁ ਭਇਆ ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਨੀ ਰਾਮ ॥
anadin bhor bheaa saach samaanee raam |
Night and day, it is dawn for them; they merge in the True Lord.
ਸਾਚਿ ਸਮਾਨੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਨੀ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਸਾਬਤੁ ਜਾਗੇ ॥
saach samaanee guramukh man bhaanee guramukh saabat jaage |
The Gurmukhs are merged in the True Lord; they are pleasing to His Mind. The Gurmukhs are intact, safe and sound, awake and awake.
ਸਾਚੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਗੁਰਿ ਦੀਆ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਨੀ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੇ ॥
saach naam amrit gur deea har charanee liv laage |
The Guru blesses them with the Ambrosial Nectar of the True Name; they are lovingly attuned to the Lord's Feet.
ਪ੍ਰਗਟੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਹਿ ਜਾਤਾ ਮਨਮੁਖਿ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਣੀ ॥
pragattee jot jot meh jaataa manamukh bharam bhulaanee |
The Divine Light is revealed, and in that Light, they achieve realization; the self-willed manmukhs wander in doubt and confusion.
ਨਾਨਕ ਭੋਰੁ ਭਇਆ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਜਾਗਤ ਰੈਣਿ ਵਿਹਾਣੀ ॥੨॥
naanak bhor bheaa man maaniaa jaagat rain vihaanee |2|
O Nanak, when the dawn breaks, their minds are satisfied; they pass their life-night awake and aware. ||2||
ਅਉਗਣ ਵੀਸਰਿਆ ਗੁਣੀ ਘਰੁ ਕੀਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
aaugan veesariaa gunee ghar keea raam |
Forgetting faults and demerits, virtue and merit enter one's home.
ਏਕੋ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਬੀਆ ਰਾਮ ॥
eko rav rahiaa avar na beea raam |
The One Lord is permeating everywhere; there is no other at all.
ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਸੋਈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਮਨ ਹੀ ਤੇ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥
rav rahiaa soee avar na koee man hee te man maaniaa |
He is All-pervading; there is no other. The mind comes to believe, from the mind.
ਜਿਨਿ ਜਲ ਥਲ ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣ ਘਟੁ ਘਟੁ ਥਾਪਿਆ ਸੋ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
jin jal thal tribhavan ghatt ghatt thaapiaa so prabh guramukh jaaniaa |
The One who established the water, the land, the three worlds, each and every heart - that God is known by the Gurmukh.
ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥ ਅਪਾਰਾ ਤ੍ਰਿਬਿਧਿ ਮੇਟਿ ਸਮਾਈ ॥
karan kaaran samarath apaaraa tribidh mett samaaee |
The Infinite, All-powerful Lord is the Creator, the Cause of causes; erasing the three-phased Maya, we merge in Him.
ਨਾਨਕ ਅਵਗਣ ਗੁਣਹ ਸਮਾਣੇ ਐਸੀ ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥੩॥
naanak avagan gunah samaane aisee guramat paaee |3|
O Nanak, then, demerits are dissolved by merits; such are the Guru's Teachings. ||3||
ਆਵਣ ਜਾਣ ਰਹੇ ਚੂਕਾ ਭੋਲਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
aavan jaan rahe chookaa bholaa raam |
My coming and going in reincarnation have ended; doubt and hesitation are gone.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਮਿਲੇ ਸਾਚਾ ਚੋਲਾ ਰਾਮ ॥
haumai maar mile saachaa cholaa raam |
Conquering my ego, I have met the True Lord, and now I wear the robe of Truth.
ਹਉਮੈ ਗੁਰਿ ਖੋਈ ਪਰਗਟੁ ਹੋਈ ਚੂਕੇ ਸੋਗ ਸੰਤਾਪੈ ॥
haumai gur khoee paragatt hoee chooke sog santaapai |
The Guru has rid me of egotism; my sorrow and suffering are dispelled.
ਜੋਤੀ ਅੰਦਰਿ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ਆਪੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ਆਪੈ ॥
jotee andar jot samaanee aap pachhaataa aapai |
My might merges into the Light; I realize and understand my own self.
ਪੇਈਅੜੈ ਘਰਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਤੀਣੀ ਸਾਹੁਰੜੈ ਪਿਰ ਭਾਣੀ ॥
peeearrai ghar sabad pateenee saahurarrai pir bhaanee |
In this world of my parents' home, I am satisfied with the Shabad; at my in-laws' home, in the world beyond, I shall be pleasing to my Husband Lord.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਚੂਕੀ ਕਾਣਿ ਲੋਕਾਣੀ ॥੪॥੩॥
naanak satigur mel milaaee chookee kaan lokaanee |4|3|
O Nanak, the True Guru has united me in His Union; my dependence on people has ended. ||4||3||

chamak tthaadt utth bhee pit aayo jaan kar |
ਹੋ ਅਧਿਕ ਰੋਇ ਗਿਰਿ ਪਰੀ ਤੌਨ ਹੀ ਖਾਟ ਤਰਿ ॥੯॥

ਤੈ ਕੋਪੀ ਜਿਹ ਪਰ ਤਿਹ ਹਰਿਹੌਂ ॥੧੦॥

ਤੈ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਦਯੋ ਸੁਪਨ ਮੈ ਜਾ ਕੇ ॥੧੧॥

kai mo kau veh deejai abai bulaae kai |

ਕਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਐਸੇ ਬਚਨ ਮੂਰਛਨਾ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਗਿਰੀ ॥
keh keh aise bachan moorachhanaa hvai giree |
ਜਨੁ ਪ੍ਰਹਾਰ ਜਮਧਰ ਕੇ ਕੀਏ ਬਿਨਾ ਮਰੀ ॥
jan prahaar jamadhar ke kee binaa maree |
ਆਨਿ ਪਿਤਾ ਤਿਹ ਲਿਯੋ ਗਰੇ ਸੌ ਲਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
aan pitaa tih liyo gare sau laae kai |
ਹੋ ਕੁਅਰਿ ਕੁਅਰਿ ਕਹਿ ਧਾਇ ਪਈ ਦੁਖ ਪਾਇ ਕੈ ॥੧੭॥

ਜੋ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਤੈ ਬਰਿਯੋ ਸੁ ਹਮੈ ਬਤਾਇਯੈ ॥
jo supane tai bariyo su hamai bataaeiyai |
ਕਰਿਯੈ ਵਹੈ ਉਪਾਇ ਮਨੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਯੈ ॥
kariyai vahai upaae manai sukh paaeiyai |
ਬਹੁ ਚਿਰ ਦ੍ਰਿਗਨ ਪਸਾਰਿ ਪਿਤਾ ਕੀ ਓਰਿ ਚਹਿ ॥
bahu chir drigan pasaar pitaa kee or cheh |
ਕਛੁ ਕਹਬੇ ਕੌ ਭਈ ਗਈ ਨ ਤਾਹਿ ਕਹਿ ॥੧੮॥
kachh kahabe kau bhee gee na taeh keh |18|
ਕਰਤ ਕਰਤ ਬਹੁ ਚਿਰ ਲੌ ਬਚਨ ਸੁਨਾਇਯੋ ॥
karat karat bahu chir lau bachan sunaaeiyo |
ਛੈਲੁ ਕੁਅਰ ਕੋ ਸਭਹਿਨ ਨਾਮ ਸੁਨਾਇਯੋ ॥
chhail kuar ko sabhahin naam sunaaeiyo |
ਸੁਪਨ ਬਿਖੈ ਪਿਤੁ ਮਾਤ ਸੁ ਮੁਹਿ ਜਾ ਕੌ ਦਿਯੋ ॥
supan bikhai pit maat su muhi jaa kau diyo |
ਹੋ ਵਹੈ ਆਪਨੋ ਨਾਥ ਮਾਨਿ ਕੈ ਮੈ ਲਿਯੋ ॥੧੯॥
