ਨਾਨਕ ਕਚੜਿਆ ਸਿਉ ਤੋੜਿ ਢੂਢਿ ਸਜਣ ਸੰਤ ਪਕਿਆ ॥
naanak kacharriaa siau torr dtoodt sajan sant pakiaa |
O Nanak, break away from the false, and seek out the Saints, your true friends.
ਓਇ ਜੀਵੰਦੇ ਵਿਛੁੜਹਿ ਓਇ ਮੁਇਆ ਨ ਜਾਹੀ ਛੋੜਿ ॥੧॥
oe jeevande vichhurreh oe mueaa na jaahee chhorr |1|
The false shall leave you, even while you are still alive; but the Saints shall not forsake you, even when you are dead. ||1||

ਨਾਨਕ ਬਿਜੁਲੀਆ ਚਮਕੰਨਿ ਘੁਰਨੑਿ ਘਟਾ ਅਤਿ ਕਾਲੀਆ ॥

O Nanak, the lightning flashes, and thunder echoes in the dark black clouds.
ਬਰਸਨਿ ਮੇਘ ਅਪਾਰ ਨਾਨਕ ਸੰਗਮਿ ਪਿਰੀ ਸੁਹੰਦੀਆ ॥੨॥
barasan megh apaar naanak sangam piree suhandeea |2|
The downpour from the clouds is heavy; O Nanak, the soul-brides are exalted and embellished with their Beloved. ||2||

ਜਲ ਥਲ ਨੀਰਿ ਭਰੇ ਸੀਤਲ ਪਵਣ ਝੁਲਾਰਦੇ ॥
jal thal neer bhare seetal pavan jhulaarade |
The ponds and the lands are overflowing with water, and the cold wind is blowing.
ਸੇਜੜੀਆ ਸੋਇੰਨ ਹੀਰੇ ਲਾਲ ਜੜੰਦੀਆ ॥
sejarreea soein heere laal jarrandeea |
Her bed is adorned with gold, diamonds and rubies;
ਸੁਭਰ ਕਪੜ ਭੋਗ ਨਾਨਕ ਪਿਰੀ ਵਿਹੂਣੀ ਤਤੀਆ ॥੩॥
subhar kaparr bhog naanak piree vihoonee tateea |3|
she is blessed with beautiful gowns and delicacies, O Nanak, but without her Beloved, she burns in agony. ||3||

ਕਾਰਣੁ ਕਰਤੈ ਜੋ ਕੀਆ ਸੋਈ ਹੈ ਕਰਣਾ ॥
kaaran karatai jo keea soee hai karanaa |
He does the dees which the Creator causes him to do.
ਜੇ ਸਉ ਧਾਵਹਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀਆ ਪਾਵਹਿ ਧੁਰਿ ਲਹਣਾ ॥
je sau dhaaveh praaneea paaveh dhur lahanaa |
Even if you run in hundreds of directions, O mortal, you shall still receive what you are pre-destined to receive.
ਬਿਨੁ ਕਰਮਾ ਕਿਛੂ ਨ ਲਭਈ ਜੇ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਸਭ ਧਰਣਾ ॥
bin karamaa kichhoo na labhee je fireh sabh dharanaa |
Without good karma, you shall obtain nothing, even if you wander across the whole world.
ਗੁਰ ਮਿਲਿ ਭਉ ਗੋਵਿੰਦ ਕਾ ਭੈ ਡਰੁ ਦੂਰਿ ਕਰਣਾ ॥
gur mil bhau govind kaa bhai ddar door karanaa |
Meeting with the Guru, you shall know the Fear of God, and other fears shall be taken away.
ਭੈ ਤੇ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਖੋਜਤ ਫਿਰਣਾ ॥
bhai te bairaag aoopajai har khojat firanaa |
Through the Fear of God, the attitude of detachment wells up, and one sets out in search of the Lord.
ਖੋਜਤ ਖੋਜਤ ਸਹਜੁ ਉਪਜਿਆ ਫਿਰਿ ਜਨਮਿ ਨ ਮਰਣਾ ॥
khojat khojat sehaj upajiaa fir janam na maranaa |
Searching and searching, intuitive wisdom wells up, and then, one is not born to die again.
ਹਿਆਇ ਕਮਾਇ ਧਿਆਇਆ ਪਾਇਆ ਸਾਧ ਸਰਣਾ ॥
hiaae kamaae dhiaaeaa paaeaa saadh saranaa |
Practicing meditation within my heart, I have found the Sanctuary of the Holy.
ਬੋਹਿਥੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਦੇਉ ਗੁਰੁ ਜਿਸੁ ਹਰਿ ਚੜਾਏ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਉਜਲੁ ਤਰਣਾ ॥੨੨॥
bohith naanak deo gur jis har charraae tis bhaujal taranaa |22|
Whoever the Lord places on the boat of Guru Nanak, is carried across the terrifying world-ocean. ||22||

ਪਹਿਲਾ ਮਰਣੁ ਕਬੂਲਿ ਜੀਵਣ ਕੀ ਛਡਿ ਆਸ ॥

First, accept death, and give up any hope of life.
ਹੋਹੁ ਸਭਨਾ ਕੀ ਰੇਣੁਕਾ ਤਉ ਆਉ ਹਮਾਰੈ ਪਾਸਿ ॥੧॥
hohu sabhanaa kee renukaa tau aau hamaarai paas |1|
Become the dust of the feet of all, and then, you may come to me. ||1||

Fifth Mehl:
ਮੁਆ ਜੀਵੰਦਾ ਪੇਖੁ ਜੀਵੰਦੇ ਮਰਿ ਜਾਨਿ ॥
muaa jeevandaa pekh jeevande mar jaan |
See, that only one who has died, truly lives; one who is alive, consider him dead.
ਜਿਨੑਾ ਮੁਹਬਤਿ ਇਕ ਸਿਉ ਤੇ ਮਾਣਸ ਪਰਧਾਨ ॥੨॥
jinaa muhabat ik siau te maanas paradhaan |2|
Those who are in love with the One Lord, are the supreme people. ||2||

Fifth Mehl:
ਜਿਸੁ ਮਨਿ ਵਸੈ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਨਿਕਟਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਪੀਰ ॥
jis man vasai paarabraham nikatt na aavai peer |
Pain does not even approach that person, within whose mind God abides.
ਭੁਖ ਤਿਖ ਤਿਸੁ ਨ ਵਿਆਪਈ ਜਮੁ ਨਹੀ ਆਵੈ ਨੀਰ ॥੩॥
bhukh tikh tis na viaapee jam nahee aavai neer |3|
Hunger and thirst do not affect him, and the Messenger of Death does not approach him. ||3||

ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈਐ ਸਚੁ ਸਾਹ ਅਡੋਲੈ ॥

Your worth cannot be estimated, O True, Unmoving Lord God.
ਸਿਧ ਸਾਧਿਕ ਗਿਆਨੀ ਧਿਆਨੀਆ ਕਉਣੁ ਤੁਧੁਨੋ ਤੋਲੈ ॥
sidh saadhik giaanee dhiaaneea kaun tudhuno tolai |
The Siddhas, seekers, spiritual teachers and meditators - who among them can measure You?
ਭੰਨਣ ਘੜਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਹੈ ਓਪਤਿ ਸਭ ਪਰਲੈ ॥
bhanan gharran samarath hai opat sabh paralai |
You are all-powerful, to form and break; You create and destroy all.
ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਹੈ ਘਟਿ ਘਟਿ ਸਭ ਬੋਲੈ ॥
karan kaaran samarath hai ghatt ghatt sabh bolai |
You are all-powerful to act, and inspire all to act; You speak through each and every heart.
ਰਿਜਕੁ ਸਮਾਹੇ ਸਭਸੈ ਕਿਆ ਮਾਣਸੁ ਡੋਲੈ ॥
rijak samaahe sabhasai kiaa maanas ddolai |
You give sustanance to all; why should mankind waver?
ਗਹਿਰ ਗਭੀਰੁ ਅਥਾਹੁ ਤੂ ਗੁਣ ਗਿਆਨ ਅਮੋਲੈ ॥
gahir gabheer athaahu too gun giaan amolai |
You are deep, profound and unfathomable; Your virtuous spiritual wisdom is priceless.
ਸੋਈ ਕੰਮੁ ਕਮਾਵਣਾ ਕੀਆ ਧੁਰਿ ਮਉਲੈ ॥
soee kam kamaavanaa keea dhur maulai |
They do the deeds which they are pre-ordained to do.
ਤੁਧਹੁ ਬਾਹਰਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਹੀ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਗੁਣ ਬੋਲੈ ॥੨੩॥੧॥੨॥
tudhahu baahar kichh nahee naanak gun bolai |23|1|2|
Without You, there is nothing at all; Nanak chants Your Glorious Praises. ||23||1||2||

ਪਡੀਆ ਕਵਨ ਕੁਮਤਿ ਤੁਮ ਲਾਗੇ ॥

O Pandit, O religious scholar, in what foul thoughts are you engaged?
ਬੂਡਹੁਗੇ ਪਰਵਾਰ ਸਕਲ ਸਿਉ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਪਹੁ ਅਭਾਗੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
booddahuge paravaar sakal siau raam na japahu abhaage |1| rahaau |
You shall be drowned, along with your family, if you do not meditate on the Lord, you unfortunate person. ||1||Pause||
ਬੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਨ ਪੜੇ ਕਾ ਕਿਆ ਗੁਨੁ ਖਰ ਚੰਦਨ ਜਸ ਭਾਰਾ ॥
bed puraan parre kaa kiaa gun khar chandan jas bhaaraa |
What is the use of reading the Vedas and the Puraanas? It is like loading a donkey with sandalwood.
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਗਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨੀ ਕੈਸੇ ਉਤਰਸਿ ਪਾਰਾ ॥੧॥
raam naam kee gat nahee jaanee kaise utaras paaraa |1|
You do not know the exalted state of the Lord's Name; how will you ever cross over? ||1||
ਜੀਅ ਬਧਹੁ ਸੁ ਧਰਮੁ ਕਰਿ ਥਾਪਹੁ ਅਧਰਮੁ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਤ ਭਾਈ ॥
jeea badhahu su dharam kar thaapahu adharam kahahu kat bhaaee |
You kill living beings, and call it a righteous action. Tell me, brother, what would you call an unrighteous action?
ਆਪਸ ਕਉ ਮੁਨਿਵਰ ਕਰਿ ਥਾਪਹੁ ਕਾ ਕਉ ਕਹਹੁ ਕਸਾਈ ॥੨॥
aapas kau munivar kar thaapahu kaa kau kahahu kasaaee |2|
You call yourself the most excellent sage; then who would you call a butcher? ||2||
ਮਨ ਕੇ ਅੰਧੇ ਆਪਿ ਨ ਬੂਝਹੁ ਕਾਹਿ ਬੁਝਾਵਹੁ ਭਾਈ ॥
man ke andhe aap na boojhahu kaeh bujhaavahu bhaaee |
You are blind in your mind, and do not understand your own self; how can you make others understand, O brother?
ਮਾਇਆ ਕਾਰਨ ਬਿਦਿਆ ਬੇਚਹੁ ਜਨਮੁ ਅਬਿਰਥਾ ਜਾਈ ॥੩॥
maaeaa kaaran bidiaa bechahu janam abirathaa jaaee |3|
For the sake of Maya and money, you sell knowledge; your life is totally worthless. ||3||
ਨਾਰਦ ਬਚਨ ਬਿਆਸੁ ਕਹਤ ਹੈ ਸੁਕ ਕਉ ਪੂਛਹੁ ਜਾਈ ॥
naarad bachan biaas kehat hai suk kau poochhahu jaaee |
Naarad and Vyaasa say these things; go and ask Suk Dayv as well.
ਕਹਿ ਕਬੀਰ ਰਾਮੈ ਰਮਿ ਛੂਟਹੁ ਨਾਹਿ ਤ ਬੂਡੇ ਭਾਈ ॥੪॥੧॥
keh kabeer raamai ram chhoottahu naeh ta boodde bhaaee |4|1|
Says Kabeer, chanting the Lord's Name, you shall be saved; otherwise, you shall drown, brother. ||4||1||

ਰੋਗ ਸੋ ਰਾਗ ਬਿਰਾਗ ਸੋ ਬੋਲ ਬਬਾਰਿਦ ਬੂੰਦਨ ਬਾਨ ਬਿਸਾਰੇ ॥

ਚਾਦਨੀ ਚੰਦ ਚਿਤਾ ਚਹੂੰ ਓਰ ਸੁ ਕੋਕਿਲਾ ਕੂਕ ਕਿ ਹੂਕ ਸੀ ਮਾਰੇ ॥
