Maaroo, First Mehl:
ਲਾਲੈ ਗਾਰਬੁ ਛੋਡਿਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭੈ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਈ ॥
laalai gaarab chhoddiaa gur kai bhai sehaj subhaaee |
The Lord's slave renounces his egotistical pride, through the Guru's Fear, intuitively and easily.
ਲਾਲੈ ਖਸਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
laalai khasam pachhaaniaa vaddee vaddiaaee |
The slave realizes his Lord and Master; glorious is his greatness!
ਖਸਮਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਕਹਣੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੧॥
khasam miliai sukh paaeaa keemat kehan na jaaee |1|
Meeting with his Lord and Master, he finds peace; His value cannot be desribed. ||1||
ਲਾਲਾ ਗੋਲਾ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਖਸਮੈ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥
laalaa golaa khasam kaa khasamai vaddiaaee |
I am the slave and servant of my Lord and Master; all glory is to my Master.
ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਉਬਰੇ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gur parasaadee ubare har kee saranaaee |1| rahaau |
By Guru's Grace, I am saved, in the Sanctuary of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਲਾਲੇ ਨੋ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਰ ਹੈ ਧੁਰਿ ਖਸਮਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਈ ॥
laale no sir kaar hai dhur khasam furamaaee |
The slave has been given the most excellent task, by the Primal Command of the Master.
ਲਾਲੈ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਪਛਾਣਿਆ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਰਜਾਈ ॥
laalai hukam pachhaaniaa sadaa rahai rajaaee |
The slave realizes the Hukam of His Command, and submits to His Will forever.
ਆਪੇ ਮੀਰਾ ਬਖਸਿ ਲਏ ਵਡੀ ਵਡਿਆਈ ॥੨॥
aape meeraa bakhas le vaddee vaddiaaee |2|
The Lord King Himself grants forgiveness; how glorious is His greatness! ||2||
ਆਪਿ ਸਚਾ ਸਭੁ ਸਚੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
aap sachaa sabh sach hai gur sabad bujhaaee |
He Himself is True, and everything is True; this is revealed through the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਤੇਰੀ ਸੇਵਾ ਸੋ ਕਰੇ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਲੈਹਿ ਤੂ ਲਾਈ ॥
teree sevaa so kare jis no laihi too laaee |
He alone serves You, whom You have enjoined to do so.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸੇਵਾ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਖੁਆਈ ॥੩॥
bin sevaa kinai na paaeaa doojai bharam khuaaee |3|
Without serving Him, no one finds Him; in duality and doubt, they are ruined. ||3||
ਸੋ ਕਿਉ ਮਨਹੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀਐ ਨਿਤ ਦੇਵੈ ਚੜੈ ਸਵਾਇਆ ॥
so kiau manahu visaareeai nit devai charrai savaaeaa |
How could we forget Him from our minds? The gifts which he bestows increase day by day.
ਜੀਉ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਸਭੁ ਤਿਸ ਦਾ ਸਾਹੁ ਤਿਨੈ ਵਿਚਿ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
jeeo pindd sabh tis daa saahu tinai vich paaeaa |
Soul and body, all belong to Him; He infused the breath into us.
ਜਾ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰੇ ਤਾ ਸੇਵੀਐ ਸੇਵਿ ਸਚਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੪॥
jaa kripaa kare taa seveeai sev sach samaaeaa |4|
If he shows His Mercy, then we serve Him; serving Him, we merge in Truth. ||4||
ਲਾਲਾ ਸੋ ਜੀਵਤੁ ਮਰੈ ਮਰਿ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
laalaa so jeevat marai mar vichahu aap gavaae |
He alone is the Lord's slave, who remains dead while yet alive, and eradicates egotism from within.
ਬੰਧਨ ਤੂਟਹਿ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਹੋਇ ਤ੍ਰਿਸਨਾ ਅਗਨਿ ਬੁਝਾਏ ॥
bandhan tootteh mukat hoe trisanaa agan bujhaae |
His bonds are broken, the fire of his desire is quenched, and he is liberated.
ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋ ਪਾਏ ॥੫॥
sabh meh naam nidhaan hai guramukh ko paae |5|
The treasure of the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is within all, but how rare are those who, as Gurmukh, obtain it. ||5||
ਲਾਲੇ ਵਿਚਿ ਗੁਣੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਨਹੀ ਲਾਲਾ ਅਵਗਣਿਆਰੁ ॥
laale vich gun kichh nahee laalaa avaganiaar |
Within the Lord's slave, there is no virtue at all; the Lord's slave is totally unworthy.
ਤੁਧੁ ਜੇਵਡੁ ਦਾਤਾ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਤੂ ਬਖਸਣਹਾਰੁ ॥
tudh jevadd daataa ko nahee too bakhasanahaar |
There is no Giver as great as You, Lord; You alone are the Forgiver.
ਤੇਰਾ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਲਾਲਾ ਮੰਨੇ ਏਹ ਕਰਣੀ ਸਾਰੁ ॥੬॥
teraa hukam laalaa mane eeh karanee saar |6|
Your slave obeys the Hukam of Your Command; this is the most excellent action. ||6||
ਗੁਰੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਸਰੁ ਜੋ ਇਛੇ ਸੋ ਫਲੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
gur saagar amrit sar jo ichhe so fal paae |
The Guru is the pool of nectar in the world-ocean; whatever one desires, that fruit is obtained.
ਨਾਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਅਮਰੁ ਹੈ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥
naam padaarath amar hai hiradai man vasaae |
The treasure of the Naam brings immortality; enshrine it in your heart and mind.
ਗੁਰ ਸੇਵਾ ਸਦਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੈ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਮਨਾਏ ॥੭॥
gur sevaa sadaa sukh hai jis no hukam manaae |7|
Serving the Guru, eternal peace is obtained, by those whom the Lord inspires to obey the Hukam of His Command. ||7||
ਸੁਇਨਾ ਰੁਪਾ ਸਭ ਧਾਤੁ ਹੈ ਮਾਟੀ ਰਲਿ ਜਾਈ ॥
sueinaa rupaa sabh dhaat hai maattee ral jaaee |
Gold and silver, and all metals, mix with dust in the end
ਬਿਨੁ ਨਾਵੈ ਨਾਲਿ ਨ ਚਲਈ ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਬੂਝ ਬੁਝਾਈ ॥
bin naavai naal na chalee satigur boojh bujhaaee |
Without the Name, nothing goes along with you; the True Guru has imparted this understanding.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਸੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੇ ਸਾਚੈ ਰਹੇ ਸਮਾਈ ॥੮॥੫॥
naanak naam rate se niramale saachai rahe samaaee |8|5|
O Nanak, those who are attuned to the Naam are immaculate and pure; they remain merged in the Truth. ||8||5||

ਮੀਤ ਨਾਥ ਕੌ ਸੰਗ ਲੈ ਤਹ ਕੋ ਕਿਯੋ ਪਯਾਨ ॥
meet naath kau sang lai teh ko kiyo payaan |
She proceeded towards Ganga taking with her husband and friend.
ਕੇਤਿਕ ਦਿਨਨ ਬਿਤਾਇ ਕੈ ਗੰਗ ਕਿਯੋ ਇਸਨਾਨ ॥੬॥
ketik dinan bitaae kai gang kiyo isanaan |6|
They bathed in the river Ganga for many days.(6)

ਪਤਿ ਕੋ ਸੰਗ ਗੰਗ ਲੈ ਨ੍ਰਹਾਈ ॥
pat ko sang gang lai nrahaaee |
ਭਾਖਿ ਬਹਿਨਿ ਤਾ ਸੋ ਲਪਟਾਈ ॥
bhaakh bahin taa so lapattaaee |
Along with her husband she reached Ganga, and there, calling him sister, embraced him.
ਮਨ ਮਾਨਤ ਤਿਨ ਕੇਲ ਕਮਾਯੋ ॥
man maanat tin kel kamaayo |
ਮੂਰਖ ਕੰਤ ਭੇਵ ਨਹਿ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੭॥
moorakh kant bhev neh paayo |7|
She made heartfelt love with him and foolish husband could not infer.(7)
ਚਿਮਟਿ ਚਿਮਟਿ ਤਾ ਸੋ ਲਪਟਾਈ ॥
chimatt chimatt taa so lapattaaee |
ਮਨ ਮਾਨਤ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੇਲ ਕਮਾਈ ॥
man maanat triy kel kamaaee |
Cuddling and caressing, she made profound love with him,
ਦਿਨ ਦੇਖਤ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਕੇਲ ਕਮਾਯੋ ॥
din dekhat triy kel kamaayo |
ਮੂਰਖ ਕੰਤ ਭੇਵ ਨਹਿ ਪਾਯੋ ॥੮॥
moorakh kant bhev neh paayo |8|
And in the broad-day light she enjoyed the sex but inane husband could not detect.(8)

ਮਨ ਮਾਨਤ ਕੋ ਮਾਨਿ ਰਤਿ ਦੀਨੋ ਜਾਰ ਉਠਾਇ ॥
man maanat ko maan rat deeno jaar utthaae |
After enjoying fervently, she bade goodbye to the lover,
ਮੁਖ ਬਾਏ ਮੂਰਖ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਭੇਦ ਨ ਸਕਿਯੋ ਪਾਇ ॥੯॥
mukh baae moorakh rahiyo bhed na sakiyo paae |9|
And the husband’s head was left hanging without knowing the secret.(9)(1)

ਮਾਨਣੇਸੁਰੀ ਰਾਨੀ ਅਤਿਹਿ ਸੁ ਸੋਹਨੀ ॥

Maaneshawari Rani was extremely pretty,
ਸਿੰਘ ਗਰੂਰ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਕੇ ਚਿਤ ਕੀ ਮੋਹਨੀ ॥
singh garoor nripat ke chit kee mohanee |
She was the favourite of Raja Garoor Singh.
ਬੈਰਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਿਲੋਕਿਯੋ ਜਬ ਤਿਨ ਜਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
bairam singh bilokiyo jab tin jaae kai |
But when she saw Beram Singh,
ਹੋ ਮਦਨ ਬਸ੍ਰਯ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਗਿਰੀ ਭੂਮਿ ਮੁਰਛਾਇ ਕੈ ॥੧॥
ho madan basray hvai giree bhoom murachhaae kai |1|
She fell for him and even lost her consciousness.(1)

ਉਠਤ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਿਯ ਅਧਿਕ ਲਗਾਈ ॥

ਕਾਮ ਕੇਲ ਤਿਹ ਸਾਥ ਕਮਾਈ ॥
kaam kel tih saath kamaaee |
She regained alertness, clutched him affectionately and made love with him.
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਜਾਰ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਉਚਾਰੋ ॥
bahur jaar ih bhaat uchaaro |
ਸੁਨੋ ਤ੍ਰਿਯਾ ਤੁਮ ਬਚਨ ਹਮਾਰੋ ॥੨॥
suno triyaa tum bachan hamaaro |2|
Then he said, ‘Oh, Lady listen to me,(2)
ਤੌ ਲਖਿ ਹੌ ਮੈ ਤੁਮੈ ਪ︀ਯਾਰੋ ॥
tau lakh hau mai tumai payaaro |
ਪਤਿ ਦੇਖਤ ਮੁਹਿ ਸਾਥ ਬਿਹਾਰੋ ॥
pat dekhat muhi saath bihaaro |
‘I will believe you love me only if you make love with me while your husband is watching.’
ਤਬ ਤੈਸੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਘਾਤ ਬਨਾਈ ॥
tab taisee triy ghaat banaaee |
ਸੋ ਮੈ ਤੁਮ ਸੌ ਕਹਤ ਸੁਨਾਈ ॥੩॥
so mai tum sau kehat sunaaee |3|
Then the woman carved such a plan, which I (the Minister) will recite to you.(3)

ਤਿਨ ਘਰ ਭੀਤਰ ਪੀਰ ਕੋ ਰਾਖਿਯੋ ਥਾਨ ਬਨਾਇ ॥
tin ghar bheetar peer ko raakhiyo thaan banaae |
In her house a place had been created for Peer, a pious person.
ਮਾਨਨੇਸ੍ਵਰੀ ਘਾਤ ਲਖਿ ਦੀਨੋ ਤਾਹਿ ਗਿਰਾਇ ॥੪॥
maananesvaree ghaat lakh deeno taeh giraae |4|
Finding an opportunity, Maaneshawari demolished it.(4)

ਢਾਹਿ ਥਾਨ ਨਿਜੁ ਪਤਿਹਿ ਦਿਖਾਯੋ ॥
dtaeh thaan nij patihi dikhaayo |
ਪੀਰ ਨਾਮ ਲੈ ਅਤਿ ਡਰ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
peer naam lai at ddar paayo |
After razing it, she called her husband and, citing Peer, she dreaded him,
ਰੋਸ ਅਬੈ ਸੁਰਤਾਨ ਬਢੈਹੈ ॥
ros abai surataan badtaihai |
ਤੋ ਕੌ ਡਾਰਿ ਖਾਟ ਤੇ ਦੈਹੈ ॥੫॥
to kau ddaar khaatt te daihai |5|
‘Soon, the Peer will get angry and topple over your bed.(5)
ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਡਾਰਿ ਤਹ ਤੇ ਤੁਹਿ ਦੈ ਹੈ ॥
pratham ddaar teh te tuhi dai hai |
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਖਾਟ ਕੇ ਤਰੇ ਦਬੈ ਹੈ ॥
bahur khaatt ke tare dabai hai |
‘Firstly he will throw you down from the bed and then push you underneath it.
ਮੋ ਕਹ ਪਕਰਿ ਤਹਾ ਹੀ ਡਰਿ ਹੈ ॥
mo keh pakar tahaa hee ddar hai |
ਦੁਹੂੰਅਨਿ ਕੌ ਗੋਡਨ ਸੌ ਮਰਿ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
duhoonan kau goddan sau mar hai |6|
‘He will fling me as well, and then will trod over with his knees.(6)
ਰਸਰਨ ਸਾਥ ਬੰਧ ਕਰਿ ਲੈ ਹੈ ॥
rasaran saath bandh kar lai hai |
ਤਾ ਪਾਛੇ ਤੋ ਕੌ ਉਲਟੈ ਹੈ ॥
taa paachhe to kau ulattai hai |
‘He will tie us with rope, and hang us upside down.
ਔਧ ਖਾਟ ਤਵ ਉਪਰਿ ਡਰਿ ਹੈ ॥
aauadh khaatt tav upar ddar hai |
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਤੁਮੈ ਜਾਨਨ ਸੌ ਮਰਿ ਹੈ ॥੭॥
bahur tumai jaanan sau mar hai |7|
‘He will put bed over you and, then kill you.’(7)
ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਕਥਾ ਤਾ ਸੋ ਯੌ ਕਹੀ ॥
pratham kathaa taa so yau kahee |
ਖਾਟ ਡਾਰਿ ਪਤਿ ਸੌ ਸ੍ਵੈ ਰਹੀ ॥
khaatt ddaar pat sau svai rahee |
She talked to him as such and, then, setting the bed, went to sleep with her husband.
ਜਬ ਸੋਯੋ ਤਾ ਕੌ ਲਖਿ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
jab soyo taa kau lakh paayo |
ਦ੍ਰਿੜ ਰਸਰਨ ਕੇ ਸਾਥ ਬੰਧਾਯੋ ॥੮॥
drirr rasaran ke saath bandhaayo |8|
When he went into slumber, she got up and tied him tightly with a rope.(8)
ਜਿਵਰਨ ਸਾਥ ਬਾਧਿ ਤਿਹ ਗਈ ॥
jivaran saath baadh tih gee |
ਸੋਇ ਰਹਿਯੋ ਜੜ ਸੁਧਿ ਨ ਲਈ ॥
soe rahiyo jarr sudh na lee |
He was tied, but he kept on sleeping and did not react.
ਖਾਟ ਤਰੇ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਕਰੋ ਹੈ ॥
khaatt tare ih bhaat karo hai |
ਜਾਨੁਕ ਮ੍ਰਿਤਕ ਸਿਰ੍ਰਹੀ ਪੈ ਸੋਹੈ ॥੯॥
jaanuk mritak sirrahee pai sohai |9|
He was tied undemeath the bed and seemed to be a dead body.(9)
