ਤਜਿ ਆਪੁ ਬਿਨਸੀ ਤਾਪੁ ਰੇਣ ਸਾਧੂ ਥੀਉ ॥
taj aap binasee taap ren saadhoo theeo |
Renounce your self-conceit, and the fever shall depart; become the dust of the feet of the Holy.
ਤਿਸਹਿ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਤੇਰਾ ਕਰਿ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਜਿਸੁ ਦੀਉ ॥੧॥
tiseh paraapat naam teraa kar kripaa jis deeo |1|
He alone receives Your Name, Lord, whom You bless with Your Mercy. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਉ ॥
mere man naam amrit peeo |
O my mind, drink in the Ambrosial Nectar of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਆਨ ਸਾਦ ਬਿਸਾਰਿ ਹੋਛੇ ਅਮਰੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੁਗੁ ਜੀਉ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
aan saad bisaar hochhe amar jug jug jeeo |1| rahaau |
Abandon other bland, insipid tastes; become immortal, and live throughout the ages. ||1||Pause||
ਨਾਮੁ ਇਕ ਰਸ ਰੰਗ ਨਾਮਾ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਾਗੀ ਲੀਉ ॥
naam ik ras rang naamaa naam laagee leeo |
Savor the essence of the One and only Naam; love the Naam, focus and attune yourself to the Naam.
ਮੀਤੁ ਸਾਜਨੁ ਸਖਾ ਬੰਧਪੁ ਹਰਿ ਏਕੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਕੀਉ ॥੨॥੫॥੨੮॥
meet saajan sakhaa bandhap har ek naanak keeo |2|5|28|
Nanak has made the One Lord his only friend, companion and relative. ||2||5||28||

Maaroo, Fifth Mehl:
ਪ੍ਰਤਿਪਾਲਿ ਮਾਤਾ ਉਦਰਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਲਗਨਿ ਦੇਤ ਨ ਸੇਕ ॥
pratipaal maataa udar raakhai lagan det na sek |
He nourishes and preserves mortals in the womb of the mother, so that the fiery heat does not hurt them.
ਸੋਈ ਸੁਆਮੀ ਈਹਾ ਰਾਖੈ ਬੂਝੁ ਬੁਧਿ ਬਿਬੇਕ ॥੧॥
soee suaamee eehaa raakhai boojh budh bibek |1|
That Lord and Master protects us here. Understand this in your mind. ||1||
ਮੇਰੇ ਮਨ ਨਾਮ ਕੀ ਕਰਿ ਟੇਕ ॥
mere man naam kee kar ttek |
O my mind, take the Support of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਤਿਸਹਿ ਬੂਝੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਤੂ ਕੀਆ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਏਕ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
tiseh boojh jin too keea prabh karan kaaran ek |1| rahaau |
Understand the One who created you; the One God is the Cause of causes. ||1||Pause||
ਚੇਤਿ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਤਜਿ ਸਿਆਣਪ ਛੋਡਿ ਸਗਲੇ ਭੇਖ ॥
chet man meh taj siaanap chhodd sagale bhekh |
Remember the One Lord in your mind, renounce your clever tricks, and give up all your religious robes.
ਸਿਮਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਸਦਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਰੇ ਕਈ ਅਨੇਕ ॥੨॥੬॥੨੯॥
simar har har sadaa naanak tare kee anek |2|6|29|
Meditating in remembrance forever on the Lord, Har, Har, O Nanak, countless beings have been saved. ||2||6||29||

Maaroo, Fifth Mehl:
ਪਤਿਤ ਪਾਵਨ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਅਨਾਥ ਕੋ ਹੈ ਨਾਥੁ ॥
patit paavan naam jaa ko anaath ko hai naath |
His Name is the Purifier of sinners; He is the Master of the masterless.
ਮਹਾ ਭਉਜਲ ਮਾਹਿ ਤੁਲਹੋ ਜਾ ਕੋ ਲਿਖਿਓ ਮਾਥ ॥੧॥
mahaa bhaujal maeh tulaho jaa ko likhio maath |1|
In the vast and terrifying world-ocean, he is the raft for those who have such destiny inscribed on their foreheads. ||1||
ਡੂਬੇ ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨੁ ਘਨ ਸਾਥ ॥
ddoobe naam bin ghan saath |
Without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, huge numbers of companions have drowned.
ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣੁ ਚਿਤਿ ਨ ਆਵੈ ਦੇ ਕਰਿ ਰਾਖੈ ਹਾਥ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
karan kaaran chit na aavai de kar raakhai haath |1| rahaau |
Even if someone does not remember the Lord, the Cause of causes, still, the Lord reaches out with His hand, and saves him. ||1||Pause||
ਸਾਧਸੰਗਤਿ ਗੁਣ ਉਚਾਰਣ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤ ਪਾਥ ॥
saadhasangat gun uchaaran har naam amrit paath |
In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, chant the Glorious Praises of the Lord, and take the Path of the Ambrosial Name of the Lord.
ਕਰਹੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਮੁਰਾਰਿ ਮਾਧਉ ਸੁਣਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਜੀਵੈ ਗਾਥ ॥੨॥੭॥੩੦॥
karahu kripaa muraar maadhau sun naanak jeevai gaath |2|7|30|
Shower me with Your Mercy, O Lord; listening to Your sermon, Nanak lives. ||2||7||30||

ਸੰਜੋਗੁ ਵਿਜੋਗੁ ਧੁਰਹੁ ਹੀ ਹੂਆ ॥
sanjog vijog dhurahu hee hooaa |
Union and separation are ordained by the Primal Lord God.
ਪੰਚ ਧਾਤੁ ਕਰਿ ਪੁਤਲਾ ਕੀਆ ॥
panch dhaat kar putalaa keea |
The puppet is made from the five elements.
ਸਾਹੈ ਕੈ ਫੁਰਮਾਇਅੜੈ ਜੀ ਦੇਹੀ ਵਿਚਿ ਜੀਉ ਆਇ ਪਇਆ ॥੧॥
saahai kai furamaaeiarrai jee dehee vich jeeo aae peaa |1|
By the Command of the Dear Lord King, the soul came and entered into the body. ||1||
ਜਿਥੈ ਅਗਨਿ ਭਖੈ ਭੜਹਾਰੇ ॥
jithai agan bhakhai bharrahaare |
In that place, where the fire rages like an oven,
ਊਰਧ ਮੁਖ ਮਹਾ ਗੁਬਾਰੇ ॥
aooradh mukh mahaa gubaare |
in that darkness where the body lies face down
ਸਾਸਿ ਸਾਸਿ ਸਮਾਲੇ ਸੋਈ ਓਥੈ ਖਸਮਿ ਛਡਾਇ ਲਇਆ ॥੨॥
saas saas samaale soee othai khasam chhaddaae leaa |2|
- there, one remembers his Lord and Master with each and every breath, and then he is rescued. ||2||
ਵਿਚਹੁ ਗਰਭੈ ਨਿਕਲਿ ਆਇਆ ॥
vichahu garabhai nikal aaeaa |
Then, one comes out from within the womb,
ਖਸਮੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿ ਦੁਨੀ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥
khasam visaar dunee chit laaeaa |
and forgetting his Lord and Master, he attaches his consciousness to the world.
ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ਭਵਾਈਐ ਜੋਨੀ ਰਹਣੁ ਨ ਕਿਤਹੀ ਥਾਇ ਭਇਆ ॥੩॥
aavai jaae bhavaaeeai jonee rehan na kitahee thaae bheaa |3|
He comes and goes, and wanders in reincarnation; he cannot remain anywhere. ||3||
ਮਿਹਰਵਾਨਿ ਰਖਿ ਲਇਅਨੁ ਆਪੇ ॥
miharavaan rakh leian aape |
The Merciful Lord Himself emancipates.
ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਸਭਿ ਤਿਸ ਕੇ ਥਾਪੇ ॥
jeea jant sabh tis ke thaape |
He created and established all beings and creatures.
ਜਨਮੁ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਜਿਣਿ ਚਲਿਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਆਇਆ ਸੋ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ਥਿਆ ॥੪॥੧॥੩੧॥
janam padaarath jin chaliaa naanak aaeaa so paravaan thiaa |4|1|31|
Those who depart after having been victorious in this priceless human life - O Nanak, their coming into the world is approved. ||4||1||31||

ਤਬ ਰਾਜਾ ਹਰਖਤ ਭਯੋ ਤੁਮਰੀ ਤੀਰ ਲਗਾਇ ॥
tab raajaa harakhat bhayo tumaree teer lagaae |
Raja felt very contended by hitting the gourd-shell,
ਧੰਨ︀ਯ ਧੰਨ︀ਯ ਰਾਨੀ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਮੋਦ ਬਢਾਇ ॥੧੮॥
dhanay dhanay raanee kahiyo mukh te mod badtaae |18|
And Rani applauded excessively that he was superb.(18)
ਤਬ ਰਾਜਾ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਕੋ ਗਯੋ ਸਕਿਯੋ ਭੇਦ ਨਹਿ ਚੀਨ ॥
tab raajaa grih ko gayo sakiyo bhed neh cheen |
Raja left for his abode without acquiescing the secret.
ਇਹ ਛਲੈ ਸੋ ਛੈਲੀ ਛਲ︀ਯੋ ਰਾਨੀ ਅਧਿਕ ਪ੍ਰਬੀਨ ॥੧੯॥
eih chhalai so chhailee chhalayo raanee adhik prabeen |19|
The percc;dve Rani had won him with such a trickery.(19)
ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਭੋਗ ਤਾ ਸੋ ਕਰਿਯੋ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਦੇਗ ਮੈ ਡਾਰਿ ॥
pratham bhog taa so kariyo bahur deg mai ddaar |
First she had revelled with him sexually and then put him in thecauldron.
ਪੁਨਿ ਬਚਿਤ੍ਰ ਰਥ ਕੋ ਛਰਿਯੋ ਐਸੋ ਚਰਿਤ ਸੁ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੨੦॥
pun bachitr rath ko chhariyo aiso charit su dhaar |20|
And then with chicanery, deluded Bachiter Rath.(20)

ਪ੍ਰਥਮ ਤੀਰ ਤੁਮਰਹਿ ਲਗਵਾਯੋ ॥

ਬਹੁਰਿ ਭਵਾਨੀ ਭਦ੍ਰ ਡਰਾਇਯੋ ॥
bahur bhavaanee bhadr ddaraaeiyo |
First, she got the gourd-shell hit and dreaded Bhawani Bhadar.
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਦੇਗ ਤੇ ਕਾਢਿ ਮੰਗਾਯੋ ॥
bahur deg te kaadt mangaayo |
ਪੁਨਿ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਤਾ ਸੌ ਕੇਲ ਕਮਾਯੋ ॥੨੧॥
pun triy taa sau kel kamaayo |21|
She saved him ihrough a cauldron and then gratified by makinglove.(21)

ਇਹ ਛਲ ਸੌ ਛਲਿ ਰਾਵ ਕੋ ਤਾ ਸੋ ਕੇਲ ਕਮਾਇ ॥
eih chhal sau chhal raav ko taa so kel kamaae |
Through such an Chritar she duped Raja and had fun with him,
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਭਵਾਨੀ ਭਦ੍ਰ ਕੌ ਦੀਨੋ ਧਾਮ ਪਠਾਇ ॥੨੨॥
bahur bhavaanee bhadr kau deeno dhaam patthaae |22|
And, thereafter, sent Bhawani Bhadar to his hermitage.(22)(1)

At the pier of Machli Bandar, an auspicious person, Drupad Dev usedto live.
ਸੂਰਬੀਰ ਜਾ ਕੇ ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਚਰਨ ਸੋ ਲਾਗ ॥੧॥
soorabeer jaa ke sadaa rahai charan so laag |1|
Many intrepid visited him and fell on his feet for blessings.(1)

ਤਿਨਿਕ ਜਗ︀ਯ ਕੋ ਬ︀ਯੋਤ ਬਨਾਯੋ ॥
tinik jagay ko bayot banaayo |
ਸਭ ਬਿਪ੍ਰਨ ਕੌ ਧਾਮ ਬੁਲਾਯੋ ॥
sabh bipran kau dhaam bulaayo |
He planned a ritUalistic feast and invited all the Brahmin priests.
ਖਾਨ ਪਾਨ ਤਿਨ ਕੋ ਬਹੁ ਦੀਨੋ ॥
khaan paan tin ko bahu deeno |
ਤਿਨ ਕੇ ਮੋਹਿ ਚਿਤ ਕੋ ਲੀਨੋ ॥੨॥
tin ke mohi chit ko leeno |2|
He served the dainty meals and earned their benediction.(2)

ਤੌਨ ਅਨਲ ਕੀ ਆਂਚ ਤੇ ਨਿਕਸੀ ਸੁਤਾ ਅਪਾਰ ॥
tauan anal kee aanch te nikasee sutaa apaar |
From the ceremonial-fire a girl was manifested.
ਨਾਮ ਦ੍ਰੋਪਤੀ ਤਵਨ ਕੋ ਬਿਪ੍ਰਨ ਧਰਿਯੋ ਬਿਚਾਰ ॥੩॥
naam dropatee tavan ko bipran dhariyo bichaar |3|
After contemplation the Brahmins named her Daropdee.(3)
ਤਾ ਪਾਛੇ ਬਿਧਨੈ ਦਯੋ ਧ੍ਰਿਸਟਦੁਮਨ ਸੁਤ ਏਕ ॥
taa paachhe bidhanai dayo dhrisattaduman sut ek |
There after, the All Pervader endowed them one son called Dusht
ਦ੍ਰੋਣਚਾਰਜ ਕੇ ਛੈ ਨਿਮਿਤ ਜੀਤਨ ਜੁਧ ਅਨੇਕ ॥੪॥
dronachaaraj ke chhai nimit jeetan judh anek |4|
Daman (the enemy annihilator).(4)

ਜੋਬਨ ਜਬੈ ਦ੍ਰੋਪਤੀ ਭਯੋ ॥

ਨਿਜ ਜਿਯ ਮੈ ਅਸ ਠਾਟ ਠਟਯੋ ॥
nij jiy mai as tthaatt tthattayo |
When Daropdee came of the age, she thought in her mind,
ਐਸੋ ਕਛੂ ਸੁਯੰਬਰ ਕਰੌ ॥
aiso kachhoo suyanbar karau |
ਜਾ ਤੇ ਸੂਰਬੀਰ ਪਤਿ ਬਰੌ ॥੫॥
jaa te soorabeer pat barau |5|
I should have a swayamber (to choose my husband) and he must bea valiant person.(5)

ਏਕ ਮਛ ਕੋ ਊਪਰ ਬਧ︀ਯੋ ਬਨਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
ek machh ko aoopar badhayo banaae kai |
‘A fish will be hung on top of bamboo stick.
ਤੇਲ ਡਾਰਿ ਤਰ ਦਿਯੋ ਕਰਾਹ ਚੜਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
tel ddaar tar diyo karaah charraae kai |
‘Underneath there, an open cauldron with oil in it, will be placed.
ਛਾਹ ਹੇਰ ਜੋ ਇਹ ਚਖ ਦਛਿਨ ਮਾਰਿ ਹੈ ॥
chhaah her jo ih chakh dachhin maar hai |
‘Looking on the image (of fish) in the oil,
ਹੋ ਸੋ ਨਰ ਹਮਰੇ ਸਾਥ ਸੁ ਆਇ ਬਿਹਾਰਿ ਹੈ ॥੬॥
ho so nar hamare saath su aae bihaar hai |6|
‘Whosoever hit the fish will marry me.’(6)
ਦੇਸ ਦੇਸ ਕੇ ਏਸਨ ਲਯੋ ਬੁਲਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
des des ke esan layo bulaae kai |
The princes from all the countries were invited.
ਮਛ ਅਛ ਸਰ ਮਾਰੋ ਧਨੁਖ ਚੜਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
machh achh sar maaro dhanukh charraae kai |
They were told to hit the fish while looking at it in the oil.
ਡੀਮ ਡਾਮ ਕਰਿ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਬਿਸਿਖ ਬਗਾਵਹੀ ॥
ddeem ddaam kar taa ko bisikh bagaavahee |
Many came with great pride and threw arrows.
ਹੋ ਲਗੈ ਨ ਤਾ ਕੋ ਚੋਟ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਆਵਹੀ ॥੭॥
ho lagai na taa ko chott bahur fir aavahee |7|
But no one could hit and they remained disappointed.(7)
