Maaroo, Fifth Mehl:
ਮਾਨ ਮੋਹ ਅਰੁ ਲੋਭ ਵਿਕਾਰਾ ਬੀਓ ਚੀਤਿ ਨ ਘਾਲਿਓ ॥
maan moh ar lobh vikaaraa beeo cheet na ghaalio |
Pride, emotional attachment, greed and corruption are gone; I have not placed anything else, other than the Lord, within my consciousness.
ਨਾਮ ਰਤਨੁ ਗੁਣਾ ਹਰਿ ਬਣਜੇ ਲਾਦਿ ਵਖਰੁ ਲੈ ਚਾਲਿਓ ॥੧॥
naam ratan gunaa har banaje laad vakhar lai chaalio |1|
I have purchased the jewel of the Naam and the Glorious Praises of the Lord; loading this merchandise, I have set out on my journey. ||1||
ਸੇਵਕ ਕੀ ਓੜਕਿ ਨਿਬਹੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਿ ॥
sevak kee orrak nibahee preet |
The love which the Lord's servant feels for the Lord lasts forever.
ਜੀਵਤ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਸੇਵਿਓ ਅਪਨਾ ਚਲਤੇ ਰਾਖਿਓ ਚੀਤਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
jeevat saahib sevio apanaa chalate raakhio cheet |1| rahaau |
In my life, I served my Lord and Master, and as I depart, I keep Him enshrined in my consciousness. ||1||Pause||
ਜੈਸੀ ਆਗਿਆ ਕੀਨੀ ਠਾਕੁਰਿ ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਮੁਖੁ ਨਹੀ ਮੋਰਿਓ ॥
jaisee aagiaa keenee tthaakur tis te mukh nahee morio |
I have not turned my face away from my Lord and Master's Command.
ਸਹਜੁ ਅਨੰਦੁ ਰਖਿਓ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਉਠਿ ਉਆਹੂ ਕਉ ਦਉਰਿਓ ॥੨॥
sehaj anand rakhio grih bheetar utth uaahoo kau daurio |2|
He fills my household with celestial peace and bliss; if He asks me to leave, I leave at once. ||2||
ਆਗਿਆ ਮਹਿ ਭੂਖ ਸੋਈ ਕਰਿ ਸੂਖਾ ਸੋਗ ਹਰਖ ਨਹੀ ਜਾਨਿਓ ॥
aagiaa meh bhookh soee kar sookhaa sog harakh nahee jaanio |
When I am under the Lord's Command, I find even hunger pleasurable; I know no difference between sorrow and joy.
ਜੋ ਜੋ ਹੁਕਮੁ ਭਇਓ ਸਾਹਿਬ ਕਾ ਸੋ ਮਾਥੈ ਲੇ ਮਾਨਿਓ ॥੩॥
jo jo hukam bheo saahib kaa so maathai le maanio |3|
Whatever the Command of my Lord and Master is, I bow my forehead and accept it. ||3||
ਭਇਓ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾਲੁ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਕ ਕਉ ਸਵਰੇ ਹਲਤ ਪਲਾਤਾ ॥
bheo kripaal tthaakur sevak kau savare halat palaataa |
The Lord and Master has become merciful to His servant; He has embellished both this world and the next.
ਧੰਨੁ ਸੇਵਕੁ ਸਫਲੁ ਓਹੁ ਆਇਆ ਜਿਨਿ ਨਾਨਕ ਖਸਮੁ ਪਛਾਤਾ ॥੪॥੫॥
dhan sevak safal ohu aaeaa jin naanak khasam pachhaataa |4|5|
Blessed is that servant, and fruitful is his birth; O Nanak, he realizes his Lord and Master. ||4||5||

ਖੁਲਿਆ ਕਰਮੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਭਈ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕੀਰਤਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਗਾਈ ॥
khuliaa karam kripaa bhee tthaakur keeratan har har gaaee |
Good karma has dawned for me - my Lord and Master has become merciful. I sing the Kirtan of the Praises of the Lord, Har, Har.
ਸ੍ਰਮੁ ਥਾਕਾ ਪਾਏ ਬਿਸ੍ਰਾਮਾ ਮਿਟਿ ਗਈ ਸਗਲੀ ਧਾਈ ॥੧॥
sram thaakaa paae bisraamaa mitt gee sagalee dhaaee |1|
My struggle is ended; I have found peace and tranquility. All my wanderings have ceased. ||1||
ਅਬ ਮੋਹਿ ਜੀਵਨ ਪਦਵੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
ab mohi jeevan padavee paaee |
Now, I have obtained the state of eternal life.
ਚੀਤਿ ਆਇਓ ਮਨਿ ਪੁਰਖੁ ਬਿਧਾਤਾ ਸੰਤਨ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

The Primal Lord, the Architect of Destiny, has come into my conscious mind; I seek the Sanctuary of the Saints. ||1||Pause||
ਕਾਮੁ ਕ੍ਰੋਧੁ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਨਿਵਾਰੇ ਨਿਵਰੇ ਸਗਲ ਬੈਰਾਈ ॥
kaam krodh lobh mohu nivaare nivare sagal bairaaee |
Sexual desire, anger, greed and emotional attachment are eradicated; all my enemies are eliminated.
ਸਦ ਹਜੂਰਿ ਹਾਜਰੁ ਹੈ ਨਾਜਰੁ ਕਤਹਿ ਨ ਭਇਓ ਦੂਰਾਈ ॥੨॥
sad hajoor haajar hai naajar kateh na bheo dooraaee |2|
He is always ever-present, here and now, watching over me; He is never far away. ||2||
ਸੁਖ ਸੀਤਲ ਸਰਧਾ ਸਭ ਪੂਰੀ ਹੋਏ ਸੰਤ ਸਹਾਈ ॥
sukh seetal saradhaa sabh pooree hoe sant sahaaee |
In peace and cool tranquility, my faith has been totally fulfilled; the Saints are my Helpers and Support.
ਪਾਵਨ ਪਤਿਤ ਕੀਏ ਖਿਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਮਹਿਮਾ ਕਥਨੁ ਨ ਜਾਈ ॥੩॥
paavan patit kee khin bheetar mahimaa kathan na jaaee |3|
He has purified the sinners in an instant; I cannot express His Glorious Praises. ||3||
ਨਿਰਭਉ ਭਏ ਸਗਲ ਭੈ ਖੋਏ ਗੋਬਿਦ ਚਰਣ ਓਟਾਈ ॥
nirbhau bhe sagal bhai khoe gobid charan ottaaee |
I have become fearless; all fear has departed. The feet of the Lord of the Universe are my only Shelter.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਜਸੁ ਗਾਵੈ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਕਾ ਰੈਣਿ ਦਿਨਸੁ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੪॥੬॥
naanak jas gaavai tthaakur kaa rain dinas liv laaee |4|6|
Nanak sings the Praises of his Lord and Master; night and day, he is lovingly focused on Him. ||4||6||

Maaroo, Fifth Mehl:
ਜੋ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਸਰਬ ਗੁਣ ਨਾਇਕੁ ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਕਬਹੁ ਨ ਗਾਵਸਿ ਰੇ ॥
jo samarath sarab gun naaeik tis kau kabahu na gaavas re |
He is all-powerful, the Master of all virtues, but you never sing of Him!
ਛੋਡਿ ਜਾਇ ਖਿਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਤਾ ਕਉ ਉਆ ਕਉ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਧਾਵਸਿ ਰੇ ॥੧॥
chhodd jaae khin bheetar taa kau uaa kau fir fir dhaavas re |1|
You shall have to leave all this in an instant, but again and again, you chase after it. ||1||
ਅਪੁਨੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਕਉ ਕਿਉ ਨ ਸਮਾਰਸਿ ਰੇ ॥
apune prabh kau kiau na samaaras re |
Why do you not contemplate your God?
ਬੈਰੀ ਸੰਗਿ ਰੰਗ ਰਸਿ ਰਚਿਆ ਤਿਸੁ ਸਿਉ ਜੀਅਰਾ ਜਾਰਸਿ ਰੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
bairee sang rang ras rachiaa tis siau jeearaa jaaras re |1| rahaau |
You are entangled in association with your enemies, and the enjoyment of pleasures; your soul is burning up with them! ||1||Pause||
ਜਾ ਕੈ ਨਾਮਿ ਸੁਨਿਐ ਜਮੁ ਛੋਡੈ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਿ ਨ ਪਾਵਸਿ ਰੇ ॥
jaa kai naam suniai jam chhoddai taa kee saran na paavas re |
Hearing His Name, the Messenger of Death will release you, and yet, you do not enter His Sanctuary!
ਕਾਢਿ ਦੇਇ ਸਿਆਲ ਬਪੁਰੇ ਕਉ ਤਾ ਕੀ ਓਟ ਟਿਕਾਵਸਿ ਰੇ ॥੨॥
kaadt dee siaal bapure kau taa kee ott ttikaavas re |2|
Turn out this wretched jackal, and seek the Shelter of that God. ||2||
ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਜਾਸੁ ਸੁਨਤ ਭਵ ਤਰੀਐ ਤਾ ਸਿਉ ਰੰਗੁ ਨ ਲਾਵਸਿ ਰੇ ॥
jis kaa jaas sunat bhav tareeai taa siau rang na laavas re |
Praising Him, you shall cross over the terrifying world-ocean, and yet, you have not fallen in love with Him!
ਥੋਰੀ ਬਾਤ ਅਲਪ ਸੁਪਨੇ ਕੀ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਅਟਕਾਵਸਿ ਰੇ ॥੩॥
thoree baat alap supane kee bahur bahur attakaavas re |3|
This meager, short-lived dream, this thing - you are engrossed in it, over and over again. ||3||
ਭਇਓ ਪ੍ਰਸਾਦੁ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਨਿਧਿ ਠਾਕੁਰ ਸੰਤਸੰਗਿ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈ ॥
bheo prasaad kripaa nidh tthaakur santasang pat paaee |
When our Lord and Master, the ocean of mercy, grants His Grace, one finds honor in the Society of the Saints.
ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਭ੍ਰਮੁ ਛੂਟਾ ਜਉ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਭਏ ਸਹਾਈ ॥੪॥੭॥
kahu naanak trai gun bhram chhoottaa jau prabh bhe sahaaee |4|7|
Says Nanak, I am rid of the illusion of the three-phased Maya, when God becomes my help and support. ||4||7||

ਅੰਤਰਜਾਮੀ ਸਭ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਨੈ ਤਿਸ ਤੇ ਕਹਾ ਦੁਲਾਰਿਓ ॥
antarajaamee sabh bidh jaanai tis te kahaa dulaario |
The Inner-knower, the Searcher of hearts, knows everything; what can anyone hide from Him?
ਹਸਤ ਪਾਵ ਝਰੇ ਖਿਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਅਗਨਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਲੈ ਜਾਰਿਓ ॥੧॥
hasat paav jhare khin bheetar agan sang lai jaario |1|
Your hands and feet will fall off in an instant, when you are burnt in the fire. ||1||
ਮੂੜੇ ਤੈ ਮਨ ਤੇ ਰਾਮੁ ਬਿਸਾਰਿਓ ॥
moorre tai man te raam bisaario |
You fool, you have forgotten the Lord from your mind!
ਲੂਣੁ ਖਾਇ ਕਰਹਿ ਹਰਾਮਖੋਰੀ ਪੇਖਤ ਨੈਨ ਬਿਦਾਰਿਓ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
loon khaae kareh haraamakhoree pekhat nain bidaario |1| rahaau |
You eat His salt, and then you are untrue to Him; before your very eyes, you shall be torn apart. ||1||Pause||
ਅਸਾਧ ਰੋਗੁ ਉਪਜਿਓ ਤਨ ਭੀਤਰਿ ਟਰਤ ਨ ਕਾਹੂ ਟਾਰਿਓ ॥
asaadh rog upajio tan bheetar ttarat na kaahoo ttaario |
The incurable disease has arisen in your body; it cannot be removed or overcome.
ਪ੍ਰਭ ਬਿਸਰਤ ਮਹਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਓ ਇਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਤਤੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਿਓ ॥੨॥੮॥
prabh bisarat mahaa dukh paaeo ihu naanak tat beechaario |2|8|
Forgetting God, one endures utter agony; this is the essence of reality which Nanak has realized. ||2||8||

Raja kept his head hanging and looking down while the paramour taken away.
ਪਾਹਰੂਨ ਜੋ ਖੀਰ ਪਠਾਈ ॥
paaharoon jo kheer patthaaee |
ਖਾਨ ਲਗੇ ਗ੍ਰੀਵਾ ਨਿਹੁਰਾਈ ॥੨੭॥
khaan lage greevaa nihuraaee |27|
The rice-pudding, which was given to the guards, they kept on eating with their eyes dug down.(27)
ਜਿਯਤ ਜਾਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਘਰ ਪਹੁਚਾਯੋ ॥
jiyat jaar triy ghar pahuchaayo |
ਪਾਹਰੂ ਨ ਰਾਜਾ ਲਖ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
paaharoo na raajaa lakh paayo |
She delivered her lover alive at his house, which neither Raja nor guards could detect.
ਤਿਹ ਪਹੁਚਾਇ ਸਖੀ ਜਬ ਆਈ ॥
tih pahuchaae sakhee jab aaee |
ਤਬ ਰਾਨੀ ਅਤਿ ਹੀ ਹਰਖਾਈ ॥੨੮॥
tab raanee at hee harakhaaee |28|
After leaving him, when her friends returned, Rani felt a sigh of relief.(28)
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਰਾਵ ਰਾਨੀ ਰਤਿ ਕੀਨੀ ॥
bahur raav raanee rat keenee |
ਚਿਤ ਕੀ ਬਾਤ ਤਾਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਦੀਨੀ ॥
chit kee baat taeh keh deenee |
Raja made love with Rani and, then, told her the secret,
ਕਿਨਹੂੰ ਭ੍ਰਮ ਮੋਰੇ ਚਿਤ ਪਾਯੋ ॥
kinahoon bhram more chit paayo |
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਮੈ ਦੇਖਨਿ ਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਆਯੋ ॥੨੯॥
taa te mai dekhan grih aayo |29|
‘Some body had put a bad notion in my mind, and that is why I have come today.(29)
ਪੁਨਿ ਰਾਨੀ ਯਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਉਚਾਰੋ ॥
pun raanee yeh bhaat uchaaro |
ਸੁਨੋ ਨ੍ਰਿਪਤਿ ਤੁਮ ਬਚਨ ਹਮਾਰੋ ॥
suno nripat tum bachan hamaaro |
‘Please, my Raja, the person who had misguided you,
ਜਿਨ ਤੁਹਿ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸੁ ਮੁਹਿ ਕਹਿ ਦੀਜੈ ॥
jin tuhi kahiyo su muhi keh deejai |
ਨਾਤਰ ਆਸ ਨ ਹਮਰੀ ਕੀਜੈ ॥੩੦॥
naatar aas na hamaree keejai |30|
‘You must disclose it to me otherwise you forget my love.’(30)
ਜਬ ਰਾਨੀ ਇਹ ਭਾਤਿ ਸੁਨਾਈ ॥
jab raanee ih bhaat sunaaee |
ਤਬ ਰਾਜੇ ਸੋ ਸਖੀ ਬਤਾਈ ॥
tab raaje so sakhee bataaee |
When Rani insisted, then Raja told her the name of the maid.
ਜੋ ਤੁਮ ਕਹਿਯੋ ਸਾਚੀ ਪਹੁਚਾਵੋ ॥
jo tum kahiyo saachee pahuchaavo |
ਨਾਤਰ ਧਾਮ ਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਕੇ ਜਾਵੋ ॥੩੧॥
naatar dhaam mrit ke jaavo |31|
‘You believe her to be true, if so then, I pray, I should be killed.(31)
ਰਾਨਿਨ ਕੋ ਕੋਊ ਦੋਸ ਲਗਾਵੈ ॥
raanin ko koaoo dos lagaavai |
ਜਿਨ ਕੌ ਜਗਤ ਸੀਸ ਨਿਹੁਰਾਵੈ ॥
jin kau jagat sees nihuraavai |
‘Who can doubt a Rani, to whom whole word pays obeisance.’
ਝੂਠੀ ਸਖੀ ਜਾਨਿ ਬਧ ਕੀਨੋ ॥
jhootthee sakhee jaan badh keeno |
ਮੂਰਖ ਰਾਵ ਭੇਦ ਨਹਿ ਚੀਨੋ ॥੩੨॥
moorakh raav bhed neh cheeno |32|
Thinking her to be liar, the maid was killed and the foolish Raja did not discover the truth.(32)

After getting the paramour to escape, she had won over the Raja,
ਸਖਿਯਨ ਮੈ ਸਾਚੀ ਭਈ ਤੌਨੈ ਸਖੀ ਸੰਘਾਰਿ ॥੩੩॥
sakhiyan mai saachee bhee tauanai sakhee sanghaar |33|
And by killing the maid, she established her honesty as well.(33)(1)

At the piers of Hoogly, there was a Raja named Himant Singh. There,
ਤਹਾ ਜਹਾਜ ਜਹਾਨ ਕੇ ਲਾਗਹਿ ਆਨਿ ਅਨੇਕ ॥੧॥
tahaa jahaaj jahaan ke laageh aan anek |1|
the ships from all over the world used to come.(1)

Sujjan Kumari was his beautiful wife; she appeared to have beentaken out of the Moon.
ਜੋਬਨ ਜੇਬ ਅਧਿਕ ਤਿਹ ਸੋਹੈ ॥
joban jeb adhik tih sohai |
ਸੁਰ ਨਰ ਨਾਗ ਅਸੁਰ ਮਨ ਮੋਹੈ ॥੨॥
sur nar naag asur man mohai |2|
Her youth knew no bounds and, even, the gods, the devils, the humansand the reptiles were enchanted on her sight.(2)
ਪਰਮ ਸਿੰਘ ਰਾਜਾ ਅਤਿ ਭਾਰੋ ॥

ਪਰਮ ਪੁਰਖ ਜਗ ਮਹਿ ਉਜਿਯਾਰੋ ॥

Parm Singh was a great king. He was considered as a magnanimous
ਤਾ ਕੀ ਦੇਹ ਰੂਪ ਅਤਿ ਝਮਕੈ ॥

ਮਾਨਹੁ ਦਿਪਤ ਦਾਮਨੀ ਦਮਕੈ ॥੩॥
maanahu dipat daamanee damakai |3|
person. His posture was the epitome of the lightning in the sky.(3)

Sujjan Kumari fell so much for his handsomeness,
ਗਿਰੀ ਮੂਰਛਨਾ ਹ੍ਵੈ ਧਰਨਿ ਮਾਰ ਕਰੀ ਬਿਸੰਭਾਰਿ ॥੪॥
giree moorachhanaa hvai dharan maar karee bisanbhaar |4|
That she lost her consciousness and fell flat on the ground.(4)

ਪਠੇ ਸਹਚਰੀ ਲੀਨੌ ਤਾਹਿ ਬੁਲਾਇ ਕੈ ॥

She sent her maid and called him over.
ਰਤਿ ਮਾਨੀ ਤਿਹ ਸੰਗ ਸੁ ਮੋਦ ਬਢਾਇ ਕੈ ॥
rat maanee tih sang su mod badtaae kai |
She enjoyed lovemaking with him,
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਬਿਦਾ ਕਰਿ ਦਿਯੋ ਅਧਿਕ ਸੁਖ ਪਾਇਯੋ ॥
bahur bidaa kar diyo adhik sukh paaeiyo |
And, then, bid him farewell,
ਹੋ ਕਾਲ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਕਰਿ ਧਾਮ ਹਮਾਰੇ ਆਇਯੋ ॥੫॥
ho kaal kripaa kar dhaam hamaare aaeiyo |5|

ਭੋਗ ਮਾਨਿ ਨ੍ਰਿਪ ਗਯੋ ਪ੍ਰਾਤ ਪੁਨਿ ਆਇਯੋ ॥
bhog maan nrip gayo praat pun aaeiyo |

ਕਾਮ ਕੇਲ ਤ੍ਰਿਯ ਸਾਥ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਉਪਜਾਯੋ ॥

ਪੁਨਿ ਰਾਨੀ ਜੂ ਬਚਨ ਮੀਤ ਸੋ ਯੌ ਕਿਯੋ ॥
pun raanee joo bachan meet so yau kiyo |

ਹੋ ਹਮਰੈ ਚਿਤ ਚੁਰਾਇ ਲਲਾ ਜੂ ਤੁਮ ਲਿਯੋ ॥੬॥

ਜਾ ਤੇ ਤੁਮ ਕੋ ਮੀਤ ਸੁ ਪਤਿ ਕਰਿ ਪਾਇਯੈ ॥
jaa te tum ko meet su pat kar paaeiyai |
(She)‘Through some means I will take you as my husband,
ਤਾ ਤੇ ਸੋਊ ਆਜੁ ਚਰਿਤ੍ਰ ਬਨਾਇਯੈ ॥
taa te soaoo aaj charitr banaaeiyai |
‘I will conduct some trickery.
ਜੌ ਮੈ ਕਹੋ ਸੁ ਕਰਿਯਹੁ ਸਾਜਨ ਆਇ ਕੈ ॥
jau mai kaho su kariyahu saajan aae kai |
‘Whatever I say, my benefactor, you must do.
ਹੋ ਮੋ ਕਹ ਹਰ ਲੈ ਜੈਯਹੁ ਹਰਖ ਬਢਾਇ ਕੈ ॥੭॥
ho mo keh har lai jaiyahu harakh badtaae kai |7|
‘And with full satisfaction rejoice with me.’(7)
ਏਕ ਬਾਸ ਸੋ ਕੁਪਿਯਾ ਕਸੀ ਸੁਧਾਰਿ ਕੈ ॥
ek baas so kupiyaa kasee sudhaar kai |
She took a bamboo stick and, on its top-end, she tied a funnel,
ਗਾੜੀ ਰੇਤੀ ਮਾਝ ਸੁ ਸਭਨ ਦਿਖਾਰਿ ਕੈ ॥
gaarree retee maajh su sabhan dikhaar kai |
Displaying to every body she dug it in the sand.
ਆਖੈ ਦੋਊ ਬੰਧਾਇ ਨਿਸਾ ਕੋ ਆਇ ਕੈ ॥
aakhai doaoo bandhaae nisaa ko aae kai |
She told him to hit it while mounting a horse and
ਹੋ ਮਾਰੈ ਯਾ ਕੋ ਬਾਨ ਤੁਰੰਗ ਧਵਾਇ ਕੈ ॥੮॥
ho maarai yaa ko baan turang dhavaae kai |8|
that too with blindfolded eyes.(8)
