ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Maaroo, First Mehl:

ਦਰਸਨੁ ਪਾਵਾ ਜੇ ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਵਾ ॥

darasan paavaa je tudh bhaavaa |

If I am pleasing to You, Lord, then I obtain the Blessed Vision of Your Darshan.

ਭਾਇ ਭਗਤਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਾ ॥

bhaae bhagat saache gun gaavaa |

In loving devotional worship, O True Lord, I sing Your Glorious Praises.

ਤੁਧੁ ਭਾਣੇ ਤੂ ਭਾਵਹਿ ਕਰਤੇ ਆਪੇ ਰਸਨ ਰਸਾਇਦਾ ॥੧॥

tudh bhaane too bhaaveh karate aape rasan rasaaeidaa |1|

By Your Will, O Creator Lord, You have become pleasing to me, and so sweet to my tongue. ||1||

ਸੋਹਨਿ ਭਗਤ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਰਬਾਰੇ ॥

sohan bhagat prabhoo darabaare |

The devotees look beautiful in the Darbaar, the Court of God.

ਮੁਕਤੁ ਭਏ ਹਰਿ ਦਾਸ ਤੁਮਾਰੇ ॥

mukat bhe har daas tumaare |

Your slaves, Lord, are liberated.

ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਇ ਤੇਰੈ ਰੰਗਿ ਰਾਤੇ ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਨਾਮੁ ਧਿਆਇਦਾ ॥੨॥

aap gavaae terai rang raate anadin naam dhiaaeidaa |2|

Eradicating self-conceit, they are attuned to Your Love; night and day, they meditate on the Naam, the Name of the Lord. ||2||

ਈਸਰੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਦੇਵੀ ਦੇਵਾ ॥

eesar brahamaa devee devaa |

Shiva, Brahma, gods and goddesses,

ਇੰਦ੍ਰ ਤਪੇ ਮੁਨਿ ਤੇਰੀ ਸੇਵਾ ॥

eindr tape mun teree sevaa |

Indra, ascetics and silent sages serve You.

ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਕੇਤੇ ਬਨਵਾਸੀ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਕੋਈ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੩॥

jatee satee kete banavaasee ant na koee paaeidaa |3|

Celibates, givers of charity and the many forest-dwellers have not found the Lord's limits. ||3||

ਵਿਣੁ ਜਾਣਾਏ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਜਾਣੈ ॥

vin jaanaae koe na jaanai |

No one knows You, unless You let them know You.

ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੇ ਸੁ ਆਪਣ ਭਾਣੈ ॥

jo kichh kare su aapan bhaanai |

Whatever is done, is by Your Will.

ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਜੀਅ ਉਪਾਏ ਭਾਣੈ ਸਾਹ ਲਵਾਇਦਾ ॥੪॥

lakh chauraaseeh jeea upaae bhaanai saah lavaaeidaa |4|

You created the 8.4 million species of beings; by Your Will, they draw their breath. ||4||

ਜੋ ਤਿਸੁ ਭਾਵੈ ਸੋ ਨਿਹਚਉ ਹੋਵੈ ॥

jo tis bhaavai so nihchau hovai |

Whatever is pleasing to Your Will, undoubtedly comes to pass.

ਮਨਮੁਖੁ ਆਪੁ ਗਣਾਏ ਰੋਵੈ ॥

manamukh aap ganaae rovai |

The self-willed manmukh shows off, and comes to grief.

ਨਾਵਹੁ ਭੁਲਾ ਠਉਰ ਨ ਪਾਏ ਆਇ ਜਾਇ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੫॥

naavahu bhulaa tthaur na paae aae jaae dukh paaeidaa |5|

Forgetting the Name, he finds no place of rest; coming and going in reincarnation, he suffers in pain. ||5||

ਨਿਰਮਲ ਕਾਇਆ ਊਜਲ ਹੰਸਾ ॥

niramal kaaeaa aoojal hansaa |

Pure is the body, and immaculate is the swan-soul;

ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨ ਅੰਸਾ ॥

tis vich naam niranjan ansaa |

within it is the immaculate essence of the Naam.

ਸਗਲੇ ਦੂਖ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਕਰਿ ਪੀਵੈ ਬਾਹੁੜਿ ਦੂਖੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੬॥

sagale dookh amrit kar peevai baahurr dookh na paaeidaa |6|

Such a being drinks in all his pains like Ambrosial Nectar; he never suffers sorrow again. ||6||

ਬਹੁ ਸਾਦਹੁ ਦੂਖੁ ਪਰਾਪਤਿ ਹੋਵੈ ॥

bahu saadahu dookh paraapat hovai |

For his excessive indulgences, he receives only pain;

ਭੋਗਹੁ ਰੋਗ ਸੁ ਅੰਤਿ ਵਿਗੋਵੈ ॥

bhogahu rog su ant vigovai |

from his enjoyments, he contracts diseases, and in the end, he wastes away.

ਹਰਖਹੁ ਸੋਗੁ ਨ ਮਿਟਈ ਕਬਹੂ ਵਿਣੁ ਭਾਣੇ ਭਰਮਾਇਦਾ ॥੭॥

harakhahu sog na mittee kabahoo vin bhaane bharamaaeidaa |7|

His pleasure can never erase his pain; without accepting the Lord's Will, he wanders lost and confused. ||7||

ਗਿਆਨ ਵਿਹੂਣੀ ਭਵੈ ਸਬਾਈ ॥

giaan vihoonee bhavai sabaaee |

Without spiritual wisdom, they all just wander around.

ਸਾਚਾ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥

saachaa rav rahiaa liv laaee |

The True Lord is pervading and permeating everywhere, lovingly engaged.

ਨਿਰਭਉ ਸਬਦੁ ਗੁਰੂ ਸਚੁ ਜਾਤਾ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਇਦਾ ॥੮॥

nirbhau sabad guroo sach jaataa jotee jot milaaeidaa |8|

The Fearless Lord is known through the Shabad, the Word of the True Guru; one's light merges into the Light. ||8||

ਅਟਲੁ ਅਡੋਲੁ ਅਤੋਲੁ ਮੁਰਾਰੇ ॥

attal addol atol muraare |

He is the eternal, unchanging, immeasurable Lord.

ਖਿਨ ਮਹਿ ਢਾਹੇ ਫੇਰਿ ਉਸਾਰੇ ॥

khin meh dtaahe fer usaare |

In an instant, He destroys, ang then reconstructs.

ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਰੇਖਿਆ ਮਿਤਿ ਨਹੀ ਕੀਮਤਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਭੇਦਿ ਪਤੀਆਇਦਾ ॥੯॥

roop na rekhiaa mit nahee keemat sabad bhed pateeaeidaa |9|

He has no form or shape, no limit or value. Pierced by the Shabad, one is satisfied. ||9||

ਹਮ ਦਾਸਨ ਕੇ ਦਾਸ ਪਿਆਰੇ ॥

ham daasan ke daas piaare |

I am the slave of Your slaves, O my Beloved.

ਸਾਧਿਕ ਸਾਚ ਭਲੇ ਵੀਚਾਰੇ ॥

saadhik saach bhale veechaare |

The seekers of Truth and goodness contemplate You.

ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਉ ਸੋਈ ਜਿਣਿ ਜਾਸੀ ਆਪੇ ਸਾਚੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੦॥

mane naau soee jin jaasee aape saach drirraaeidaa |10|

Whoever believes in the Name, wins; He Himself implants Truth within. ||10||

ਪਲੈ ਸਾਚੁ ਸਚੇ ਸਚਿਆਰਾ ॥

palai saach sache sachiaaraa |

The Truest of the True has the Truth is His lap.

ਸਾਚੇ ਭਾਵੈ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਿਆਰਾ ॥

saache bhaavai sabad piaaraa |

The True Lord is pleased with those who love the Shabad.

ਤ੍ਰਿਭਵਣਿ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਲਾ ਧਰਿ ਥਾਪੀ ਸਾਚੇ ਹੀ ਪਤੀਆਇਦਾ ॥੧੧॥

tribhavan saach kalaa dhar thaapee saache hee pateeaeidaa |11|

Exerting His power, the Lord has established Truth throughout the three worlds; with Truth He is pleased. ||11||

ਵਡਾ ਵਡਾ ਆਖੈ ਸਭੁ ਕੋਈ ॥

vaddaa vaddaa aakhai sabh koee |

Everyone calls Him the greatest of the great.

ਗੁਰ ਬਿਨੁ ਸੋਝੀ ਕਿਨੈ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥

gur bin sojhee kinai na hoee |

Without the Guru, no one understands Him.

ਸਾਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਸੋ ਸਾਚੇ ਭਾਏ ਨਾ ਵੀਛੁੜਿ ਦੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੨॥

saach milai so saache bhaae naa veechhurr dukh paaeidaa |12|

The True Lord is pleased with those who merge in Truth; they are not separated again, and they do not suffer. ||12||

ਧੁਰਹੁ ਵਿਛੁੰਨੇ ਧਾਹੀ ਰੁੰਨੇ ॥

dhurahu vichhune dhaahee rune |

Separated from the Primal Lord, they loudly weep and wail.

ਮਰਿ ਮਰਿ ਜਨਮਹਿ ਮੁਹਲਤਿ ਪੁੰਨੇ ॥

mar mar janameh muhalat pune |

They die and die, only to be reborn, when their time has passed.

ਜਿਸੁ ਬਖਸੇ ਤਿਸੁ ਦੇ ਵਡਿਆਈ ਮੇਲਿ ਨ ਪਛੋਤਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੩॥

jis bakhase tis de vaddiaaee mel na pachhotaaeidaa |13|

He blesses those whom He forgives with glorious greatness; united with Him, they do not regret or repent. ||13 |

ਆਪੇ ਕਰਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਭੁਗਤਾ ॥

aape karataa aape bhugataa |

| He Himself is the Creator, and He Himself is the Enjoyer.

ਆਪੇ ਤ੍ਰਿਪਤਾ ਆਪੇ ਮੁਕਤਾ ॥

aape tripataa aape mukataa |

He Himself is satisfied, and He Himself is liberated.

ਆਪੇ ਮੁਕਤਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਮੁਕਤੀਸਰੁ ਮਮਤਾ ਮੋਹੁ ਚੁਕਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੪॥

aape mukat daan mukateesar mamataa mohu chukaaeidaa |14|

The Lord of liberation Himself grants liberation; He eradicates possessiveness and attachment. ||14||

ਦਾਨਾ ਕੈ ਸਿਰਿ ਦਾਨੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਾ ॥

daanaa kai sir daan veechaaraa |

I consider Your gifts to be the most wonderful gifts.

ਕਰਣ ਕਾਰਣ ਸਮਰਥੁ ਅਪਾਰਾ ॥

karan kaaran samarath apaaraa |

You are the Cause of causes, Almighty Infinite Lord.

ਕਰਿ ਕਰਿ ਵੇਖੈ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਪਣਾ ਕਰਣੀ ਕਾਰ ਕਰਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੫॥

kar kar vekhai keetaa apanaa karanee kaar karaaeidaa |15|

Creating the creation, You gaze upon what You have created; You cause all to do their deeds. ||15||

ਸੇ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਭਾਵਹਿ ॥

se gun gaaveh saache bhaaveh |

They alone sing Your Glorious Praises, who are pleasing to You, O True Lord.

ਤੁਝ ਤੇ ਉਪਜਹਿ ਤੁਝ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਵਹਿ ॥

tujh te upajeh tujh maeh samaaveh |

They issue forth from You, and merge again into You.

ਨਾਨਕੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਹੈ ਬੇਨੰਤੀ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਾਚੇ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਇਦਾ ॥੧੬॥੨॥੧੪॥

naanak saach kahai benantee mil saache sukh paaeidaa |16|2|14|

Nanak offers this true prayer; meeting with the True Lord, peace is obtained. ||16||2||14||
