Salok, First Mehl:
ਸਤੀ ਪਾਪੁ ਕਰਿ ਸਤੁ ਕਮਾਹਿ ॥
satee paap kar sat kamaeh |
Men of charity gather wealth by committing sins, and then give it away in donations to charity.
ਗੁਰ ਦੀਖਿਆ ਘਰਿ ਦੇਵਣ ਜਾਹਿ ॥
gur deekhiaa ghar devan jaeh |
Their spiritual teachers go to their homes to instruct them.
ਇਸਤਰੀ ਪੁਰਖੈ ਖਟਿਐ ਭਾਉ ॥
eisataree purakhai khattiai bhaau |
The woman loves the man only for his wealth;
ਭਾਵੈ ਆਵਉ ਭਾਵੈ ਜਾਉ ॥
bhaavai aavau bhaavai jaau |
they come and go as they please.
ਸਾਸਤੁ ਬੇਦੁ ਨ ਮਾਨੈ ਕੋਇ ॥
saasat bed na maanai koe |
No one obeys the Shaastras or the Vedas.
ਆਪੋ ਆਪੈ ਪੂਜਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
aapo aapai poojaa hoe |
Everyone worships himself.
ਕਾਜੀ ਹੋਇ ਕੈ ਬਹੈ ਨਿਆਇ ॥
kaajee hoe kai bahai niaae |
Becoming judges, they sit and administer justice.
ਫੇਰੇ ਤਸਬੀ ਕਰੇ ਖੁਦਾਇ ॥
fere tasabee kare khudaae |
They chant on their malas, and call upon God.
ਵਢੀ ਲੈ ਕੈ ਹਕੁ ਗਵਾਏ ॥
vadtee lai kai hak gavaae |
They accept bribes, and block justice.
ਜੇ ਕੋ ਪੁਛੈ ਤਾ ਪੜਿ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
je ko puchhai taa parr sunaae |
If someone asks them, they read quotations from their books.
ਤੁਰਕ ਮੰਤ੍ਰੁ ਕਨਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਸਮਾਹਿ ॥
turak mantru kan ridai samaeh |
The Muslim scriptures are in their ears and in their hearts.
ਲੋਕ ਮੁਹਾਵਹਿ ਚਾੜੀ ਖਾਹਿ ॥
lok muhaaveh chaarree khaeh |
They plunder the people, and engage in gossip and flattery.
ਚਉਕਾ ਦੇ ਕੈ ਸੁਚਾ ਹੋਇ ॥
chaukaa de kai suchaa hoe |
They anoint their kitchens to try to become pure.
ਐਸਾ ਹਿੰਦੂ ਵੇਖਹੁ ਕੋਇ ॥
aisaa hindoo vekhahu koe |
Behold, such is the Hindu.
ਜੋਗੀ ਗਿਰਹੀ ਜਟਾ ਬਿਭੂਤ ॥
jogee girahee jattaa bibhoot |
The Yogi, with matted hair and ashes on his body, has become a householder.
ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਰੋਵਹਿ ਪੂਤ ॥
aagai paachhai roveh poot |
The children weep in front of him and behind him.
ਜੋਗੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ਜੁਗਤਿ ਗਵਾਈ ॥
jog na paaeaa jugat gavaaee |
He does not attain Yoga - he has lost his way.
ਕਿਤੁ ਕਾਰਣਿ ਸਿਰਿ ਛਾਈ ਪਾਈ ॥
kit kaaran sir chhaaee paaee |
Why does he apply ashes to his forehead?
ਨਾਨਕ ਕਲਿ ਕਾ ਏਹੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥
naanak kal kaa ehu paravaan |
O Nanak, this is the sign of the Dark Age of Kali Yuga;
ਆਪੇ ਆਖਣੁ ਆਪੇ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੧॥
aape aakhan aape jaan |1|
everyone says that he himself knows. ||1||
