ਆਸਾ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

aasaa mahalaa 1 |

Aasaa, First Mehl:

ਤਾਲ ਮਦੀਰੇ ਘਟ ਕੇ ਘਾਟ ॥

taal madeere ghatt ke ghaatt |

The urges of the heart are like cymbals and ankle-bells;

ਦੋਲਕ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਵਾਜਹਿ ਵਾਜ ॥

dolak duneea vaajeh vaaj |

the drum of the world resounds with the beat.

ਨਾਰਦੁ ਨਾਚੈ ਕਲਿ ਕਾ ਭਾਉ ॥

naarad naachai kal kaa bhaau |

Naarad dances to the tune of the Dark Age of Kali Yuga;

ਜਤੀ ਸਤੀ ਕਹ ਰਾਖਹਿ ਪਾਉ ॥੧॥

jatee satee keh raakheh paau |1|

where can the celibates and the men of truth place their feet? ||1||

ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੁ ॥

naanak naam vittahu kurabaan |

Nanak is a sacrifice to the Naam, the Name of the Lord.

ਅੰਧੀ ਦੁਨੀਆ ਸਾਹਿਬੁ ਜਾਣੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

andhee duneea saahib jaan |1| rahaau |

The world is blind; our Lord and Master is All-seeing. ||1||Pause||

ਗੁਰੂ ਪਾਸਹੁ ਫਿਰਿ ਚੇਲਾ ਖਾਇ ॥

guroo paasahu fir chelaa khaae |

The disciple feeds on the Guru;

ਤਾਮਿ ਪਰੀਤਿ ਵਸੈ ਘਰਿ ਆਇ ॥

taam pareet vasai ghar aae |

out of love for bread, he comes to dwell in his home.

ਜੇ ਸਉ ਵਰ੍ਹਿਆ ਜੀਵਣ ਖਾਣੁ ॥

je sau varhiaa jeevan khaan |

If one were to live and eat for hundreds of years,

ਖਸਮ ਪਛਾਣੈ ਸੋ ਦਿਨੁ ਪਰਵਾਣੁ ॥੨॥

khasam pachhaanai so din paravaan |2|

that day alone would be auspicious, when he recognizes his Lord and Master. ||2||

ਦਰਸਨਿ ਦੇਖਿਐ ਦਇਆ ਨ ਹੋਇ ॥

darasan dekhiai deaa na hoe |

Beholding the sight of the petitioner, compassion is not aroused.

ਲਏ ਦਿਤੇ ਵਿਣੁ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥

le dite vin rahai na koe |

No one lives without give and take.

ਰਾਜਾ ਨਿਆਉ ਕਰੇ ਹਥਿ ਹੋਇ ॥

raajaa niaau kare hath hoe |

The king administers justice only if his palm is greased.

ਕਹੈ ਖੁਦਾਇ ਨ ਮਾਨੈ ਕੋਇ ॥੩॥

kahai khudaae na maanai koe |3|

No one is moved by the Name of God. ||3||

ਮਾਣਸ ਮੂਰਤਿ ਨਾਨਕੁ ਨਾਮੁ ॥

maanas moorat naanak naam |

O Nanak, they are human beings in form and name only;

ਕਰਣੀ ਕੁਤਾ ਦਰਿ ਫੁਰਮਾਨੁ ॥

karanee kutaa dar furamaan |

by their deeds they are dogs - this is the Command of the Lord's Court.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦਿ ਜਾਣੈ ਮਿਹਮਾਨੁ ॥

gur parasaad jaanai mihamaan |

By Guru's Grace, if one sees himself as a guest in this world,

ਤਾ ਕਿਛੁ ਦਰਗਹ ਪਾਵੈ ਮਾਨੁ ॥੪॥੪॥

taa kichh daragah paavai maan |4|4|

then he gains honor in the Court of the Lord. ||4||4||
