ਮਾਰੂ ਮਹਲਾ ੧ ॥

Maaroo, First Mehl:

ਬਿਖੁ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਲਾਦਿਆ ਦੀਆ ਸਮੁੰਦ ਮੰਝਾਰਿ ॥

bikh bohithaa laadiaa deea samund manjhaar |

The boat is loaded with sin and corruption, and launched into the sea.

ਕੰਧੀ ਦਿਸਿ ਨ ਆਵਈ ਨਾ ਉਰਵਾਰੁ ਨ ਪਾਰੁ ॥

kandhee dis na aavee naa uravaar na paar |

The shore cannot be seen on this side, nor on the shore beyond.

ਵੰਝੀ ਹਾਥਿ ਨ ਖੇਵਟੂ ਜਲੁ ਸਾਗਰੁ ਅਸਰਾਲੁ ॥੧॥

vanjhee haath na khevattoo jal saagar asaraal |1|

There are no oars, nor any boatmen, to cross over the terrifying world-ocean. ||1||

ਬਾਬਾ ਜਗੁ ਫਾਥਾ ਮਹਾ ਜਾਲਿ ॥

baabaa jag faathaa mahaa jaal |

O Baba, the world is caught in the great noose.

ਗੁਰ ਪਰਸਾਦੀ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

gur parasaadee ubare sachaa naam samaal |1| rahaau |

By Guru's Grace, they are saved, contemplating the True Name. ||1||Pause||

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੂ ਹੈ ਬੋਹਿਥਾ ਸਬਦਿ ਲੰਘਾਵਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

satiguroo hai bohithaa sabad langhaavanahaar |

The True Guru is the boat; the Word of the Shabad will carry them across.

ਤਿਥੈ ਪਵਣੁ ਨ ਪਾਵਕੋ ਨਾ ਜਲੁ ਨਾ ਆਕਾਰੁ ॥

tithai pavan na paavako naa jal naa aakaar |

There is neither wind nor fire, neither water nor form there.

ਤਿਥੈ ਸਚਾ ਸਚਿ ਨਾਇ ਭਵਜਲ ਤਾਰਣਹਾਰੁ ॥੨॥

tithai sachaa sach naae bhavajal taaranahaar |2|

The True Name of the True Lord is there; it carries them across the terrifying world-ocean. ||2||

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਲੰਘੇ ਸੇ ਪਾਰਿ ਪਏ ਸਚੇ ਸਿਉ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

guramukh langhe se paar pe sache siau liv laae |

The Gurmukhs reach the shore beyond, lovingly focusing on the True Lord.

ਆਵਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਆ ਜੋਤੀ ਜੋਤਿ ਮਿਲਾਇ ॥

aavaa gaun nivaariaa jotee jot milaae |

Their comings and goings are ended, and their light merges into the Light.

ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਸਹਜੁ ਊਪਜੈ ਸਚੇ ਰਹੈ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੩॥

guramatee sehaj aoopajai sache rahai samaae |3|

Following the Guru's Teachings, intuitive peace wells up within them, and they remain merged in the True Lord. ||3||

ਸਪੁ ਪਿੜਾਈ ਪਾਈਐ ਬਿਖੁ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਮਨਿ ਰੋਸੁ ॥

sap pirraaee paaeeai bikh antar man ros |

The snake may be locked in a basket, but it is still poisonous, and the anger within its mind remains.

ਪੂਰਬਿ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਪਾਈਐ ਕਿਸ ਨੋ ਦੀਜੈ ਦੋਸੁ ॥

poorab likhiaa paaeeai kis no deejai dos |

One obtains what is pre-ordained; why does he blame others?

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਗਾਰੜੁ ਜੇ ਸੁਣੇ ਮੰਨੇ ਨਾਉ ਸੰਤੋਸੁ ॥੪॥

guramukh gaararr je sune mane naau santos |4|

If one, as Gurmukh, hears and believes in the Name, the charm against poison, his mind becomes content. ||4||

ਮਾਗਰਮਛੁ ਫਹਾਈਐ ਕੁੰਡੀ ਜਾਲੁ ਵਤਾਇ ॥

maagaramachh fahaaeeai kunddee jaal vataae |

The crocodile is caught by the hook and line;

ਦੁਰਮਤਿ ਫਾਥਾ ਫਾਹੀਐ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਪਛੋਤਾਇ ॥

duramat faathaa faaheeai fir fir pachhotaae |

caught in the trap of evil-mindedness, he regrets and repents, again and again.

ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣੁ ਨ ਸੁਝਈ ਕਿਰਤੁ ਨ ਮੇਟਿਆ ਜਾਇ ॥੫॥

jaman maran na sujhee kirat na mettiaa jaae |5|

He does not understand birth and death; the inscription of one's past actions cannot be erased. ||5||

ਹਉਮੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਪਾਇ ਜਗਤੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਸੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਜਾਇ ॥

haumai bikh paae jagat upaaeaa sabad vasai bikh jaae |

Injecting the poison of egotism, the world was created; with the Shabad enshrined within, the poison is eliminated.

ਜਰਾ ਜੋਹਿ ਨ ਸਕਈ ਸਚਿ ਰਹੈ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥

jaraa johi na sakee sach rahai liv laae |

Old age cannot torment one who remains lovingly absorbed in the True Lord.

ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਸੋ ਆਖੀਐ ਜਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਜਾਇ ॥੬॥

jeevan mukat so aakheeai jis vichahu haumai jaae |6|

He alone is called Jivan-Mikta, liberated while yet alive, from within whom egotism is eradicated. ||6||

ਧੰਧੈ ਧਾਵਤ ਜਗੁ ਬਾਧਿਆ ਨਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਵੀਚਾਰੁ ॥

dhandhai dhaavat jag baadhiaa naa boojhai veechaar |

The world is chasing after worldly affairs; caught and bound, it does not understand contemplative meditation.

ਜੰਮਣ ਮਰਣੁ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਆ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਮੁਗਧੁ ਗਵਾਰੁ ॥

jaman maran visaariaa manamukh mugadh gavaar |

The foolish, ignorant, self-willed manmukh has forgotten birth and death.

ਗੁਰਿ ਰਾਖੇ ਸੇ ਉਬਰੇ ਸਚਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥੭॥

gur raakhe se ubare sachaa sabad veechaar |7|

Those whom the Guru has protected are saved, contemplating the True Word of the Shabad. ||7||

ਸੂਹਟੁ ਪਿੰਜਰਿ ਪ੍ਰੇਮ ਕੈ ਬੋਲੈ ਬੋਲਣਹਾਰੁ ॥

soohatt pinjar prem kai bolai bolanahaar |

In the cage of divine love, the parrot, speaks.

ਸਚੁ ਚੁਗੈ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਐ ਉਡੈ ਤ ਏਕਾ ਵਾਰ ॥

sach chugai amrit peeai uddai ta ekaa vaar |

It pecks at the Truth, and drinks in the Ambrosial Nectar; it flies away, only once.

ਗੁਰਿ ਮਿਲਿਐ ਖਸਮੁ ਪਛਾਣੀਐ ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਮੋਖ ਦੁਆਰੁ ॥੮॥੨॥

gur miliai khasam pachhaaneeai kahu naanak mokh duaar |8|2|

Meeting with the Guru, one recognizes his Lord and Master; says Nanak, he finds the gate of liberation. ||8||2||
