ਜਿਹ ਬਾਝੁ ਨ ਜੀਆ ਜਾਈ ॥

jih baajh na jeea jaaee |

Without Him, we cannot even live;

ਜਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਤ ਘਾਲ ਅਘਾਈ ॥

jau milai ta ghaal aghaaee |

when we meet Him, then our task is completed.

ਸਦ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਭਲੋ ਕਹਾਂਹੀ ॥

sad jeevan bhalo kahaanhee |

People say it is good to live forever,

ਮੂਏ ਬਿਨੁ ਜੀਵਨੁ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੧॥

mooe bin jeevan naahee |1|

but without dying, there is no life. ||1||

ਅਬ ਕਿਆ ਕਥੀਐ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਬੀਚਾਰਾ ॥

ab kiaa katheeai giaan beechaaraa |

So now, what sort wisdom should I contemplate and preach?

ਨਿਜ ਨਿਰਖਤ ਗਤ ਬਿਉਹਾਰਾ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

nij nirakhat gat biauhaaraa |1| rahaau |

As I watch, worldly things dissipate. ||1||Pause||

ਘਸਿ ਕੁੰਕਮ ਚੰਦਨੁ ਗਾਰਿਆ ॥

ghas kunkam chandan gaariaa |

Saffron is ground up, and mixed with sandalwood;

ਬਿਨੁ ਨੈਨਹੁ ਜਗਤੁ ਨਿਹਾਰਿਆ ॥

bin nainahu jagat nihaariaa |

without eyes, the world is seen.

ਪੂਤਿ ਪਿਤਾ ਇਕੁ ਜਾਇਆ ॥

poot pitaa ik jaaeaa |

The son has given birth to his father;

ਬਿਨੁ ਠਾਹਰ ਨਗਰੁ ਬਸਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

bin tthaahar nagar basaaeaa |2|

without a place, the city has been established. ||2||

ਜਾਚਕ ਜਨ ਦਾਤਾ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

jaachak jan daataa paaeaa |

The humble beggar has found the Great Giver,

ਸੋ ਦੀਆ ਨ ਜਾਈ ਖਾਇਆ ॥

so deea na jaaee khaaeaa |

but he is unable to eat what he has been given.

ਛੋਡਿਆ ਜਾਇ ਨ ਮੂਕਾ ॥

chhoddiaa jaae na mookaa |

He cannot leave it alone, but it is never exhausted.

ਅਉਰਨ ਪਹਿ ਜਾਨਾ ਚੂਕਾ ॥੩॥

aauran peh jaanaa chookaa |3|

He shall not go to beg from others any longer. ||3||

ਜੋ ਜੀਵਨ ਮਰਨਾ ਜਾਨੈ ॥

jo jeevan maranaa jaanai |

Those select few, who know how to die while yet alive,

ਸੋ ਪੰਚ ਸੈਲ ਸੁਖ ਮਾਨੈ ॥

so panch sail sukh maanai |

Enjoy great peace.

ਕਬੀਰੈ ਸੋ ਧਨੁ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

kabeerai so dhan paaeaa |

Kabeer has found that wealth;

ਹਰਿ ਭੇਟਤ ਆਪੁ ਮਿਟਾਇਆ ॥੪॥੬॥

har bhettat aap mittaaeaa |4|6|

meeting with the Lord, he has erased his self-conceit. ||4||6||
