ਭੈਰਉ ਮਹਲਾ ੫ ॥

Bhairao, Fifth Mehl:

ਜੇ ਸਉ ਲੋਚਿ ਲੋਚਿ ਖਾਵਾਇਆ ॥

je sau loch loch khaavaaeaa |

Even though he may be fed with hundreds of longings and yearnings,

ਸਾਕਤ ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਚੀਤਿ ਨ ਆਇਆ ॥੧॥

saakat har har cheet na aaeaa |1|

still the faithless cynic does not remember the Lord, Har, Har. ||1||

ਸੰਤ ਜਨਾ ਕੀ ਲੇਹੁ ਮਤੇ ॥

sant janaa kee lehu mate |

Take in the teachings of the humble Saints.

ਸਾਧਸੰਗਿ ਪਾਵਹੁ ਪਰਮ ਗਤੇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥

saadhasang paavahu param gate |1| rahaau |

In the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, you shall obtain the supreme status. ||1||Pause||

ਪਾਥਰ ਕਉ ਬਹੁ ਨੀਰੁ ਪਵਾਇਆ ॥

paathar kau bahu neer pavaaeaa |

Stones may be kept under water for a long time.

ਨਹ ਭੀਗੈ ਅਧਿਕ ਸੂਕਾਇਆ ॥੨॥

neh bheegai adhik sookaaeaa |2|

Even so, they do not absorb the water; they remain hard and dry. ||2||

ਖਟੁ ਸਾਸਤ੍ਰ ਮੂਰਖੈ ਸੁਨਾਇਆ ॥

khatt saasatr moorakhai sunaaeaa |

The six Shaastras may be read to a fool,

ਜੈਸੇ ਦਹ ਦਿਸ ਪਵਨੁ ਝੁਲਾਇਆ ॥੩॥

jaise deh dis pavan jhulaaeaa |3|

but it is like the wind blowing in the ten directions. ||3||

ਬਿਨੁ ਕਣ ਖਲਹਾਨੁ ਜੈਸੇ ਗਾਹਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥

bin kan khalahaan jaise gaahan paaeaa |

It is like threshing a crop without any corn - nothing is gained.

ਤਿਉ ਸਾਕਤ ਤੇ ਕੋ ਨ ਬਰਾਸਾਇਆ ॥੪॥

tiau saakat te ko na baraasaaeaa |4|

In the same way, no benefit comes from the faithless cynic. ||4||

ਤਿਤ ਹੀ ਲਾਗਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਕੋ ਲਾਇਆ ॥

tit hee laagaa jit ko laaeaa |

As the Lord attaches them, so are all attached.

ਕਹੁ ਨਾਨਕ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਬਣਤ ਬਣਾਇਆ ॥੫॥੫॥

kahu naanak prabh banat banaaeaa |5|5|

Says Nanak, God has formed such a form. ||5||5||
