Prabhaatee, First Mehl:
ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਸਗਲ ਜਗੁ ਛਾਇਆ ॥
maaeaa mohi sagal jag chhaaeaa |
Emotional attachment to Maya is spread out all over the world.
ਕਾਮਣਿ ਦੇਖਿ ਕਾਮਿ ਲੋਭਾਇਆ ॥
kaaman dekh kaam lobhaaeaa |
Seeing a beautiful woman, the man is overcome with sexual desire.
ਸੁਤ ਕੰਚਨ ਸਿਉ ਹੇਤੁ ਵਧਾਇਆ ॥
sut kanchan siau het vadhaaeaa |
His love for his children and gold steadily increases.
ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਅਪਨਾ ਇਕੁ ਰਾਮੁ ਪਰਾਇਆ ॥੧॥
sabh kichh apanaa ik raam paraaeaa |1|
He sees everything as his own, but he does not own the One Lord. ||1||
ਐਸਾ ਜਾਪੁ ਜਪਉ ਜਪਮਾਲੀ ॥
aisaa jaap jpau japamaalee |
I meditate as I chant on such a mala,
ਦੁਖ ਸੁਖ ਪਰਹਰਿ ਭਗਤਿ ਨਿਰਾਲੀ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
dukh sukh parahar bhagat niraalee |1| rahaau |
that I rise above pleasure and pain; I attain the most wondrous devotional worship of the Lord. ||1||Pause||
ਗੁਣ ਨਿਧਾਨ ਤੇਰਾ ਅੰਤੁ ਨ ਪਾਇਆ ॥
gun nidhaan teraa ant na paaeaa |
O Treasure of Virtue, Your limits cannot be found.
ਸਾਚ ਸਬਦਿ ਤੁਝ ਮਾਹਿ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥
saach sabad tujh maeh samaaeaa |
Through the True Word of the Shabad, I am absorbed into You.
ਆਵਾ ਗਉਣੁ ਤੁਧੁ ਆਪਿ ਰਚਾਇਆ ॥
aavaa gaun tudh aap rachaaeaa |
You Yourself created the comings and goings of reincarnation.
ਸੇਈ ਭਗਤ ਜਿਨ ਸਚਿ ਚਿਤੁ ਲਾਇਆ ॥੨॥
seee bhagat jin sach chit laaeaa |2|
They alone are devotees, who focus their consciousness on You. ||2||
ਗਿਆਨੁ ਧਿਆਨੁ ਨਰਹਰਿ ਨਿਰਬਾਣੀ ॥
giaan dhiaan narahar nirabaanee |
Spiritual wisdom and meditation on the Lord, the Lord of Nirvaanaa
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਭੇਟੇ ਕੋਇ ਨ ਜਾਣੀ ॥
bin satigur bhette koe na jaanee |
- without meeting the True Guru, no one knows this.
ਸਗਲ ਸਰੋਵਰ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਮਾਣੀ ॥
sagal sarovar jot samaanee |
The Lord's Light fills the sacred pools of all beings.
ਆਨਦ ਰੂਪ ਵਿਟਹੁ ਕੁਰਬਾਣੀ ॥੩॥
aanad roop vittahu kurabaanee |3|
I am a sacrifice to the Embodiment of Bliss. ||3||
ਭਾਉ ਭਗਤਿ ਗੁਰਮਤੀ ਪਾਏ ॥
bhaau bhagat guramatee paae |
Through the Guru's Teachings, one achieves loving devotional worship.
ਹਉਮੈ ਵਿਚਹੁ ਸਬਦਿ ਜਲਾਏ ॥
haumai vichahu sabad jalaae |
The Shabad burns away egotism from within.
ਧਾਵਤੁ ਰਾਖੈ ਠਾਕਿ ਰਹਾਏ ॥
dhaavat raakhai tthaak rahaae |
The wandering mind is restrained and held in its place.
ਸਚਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਮੰਨਿ ਵਸਾਏ ॥੪॥
sachaa naam man vasaae |4|
The True Name is enshrined in the mind. ||4||
ਬਿਸਮ ਬਿਨੋਦ ਰਹੇ ਪਰਮਾਦੀ ॥
bisam binod rahe paramaadee |
The exciting and intoxicating worldly plays come to an end,
ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਮਾਨਿਆ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਗੀ ॥
guramat maaniaa ek liv laagee |
for those who accept the Guru's Teachings, and become lovingly attuned to the One Lord.
ਦੇਖਿ ਨਿਵਾਰਿਆ ਜਲ ਮਹਿ ਆਗੀ ॥
dekh nivaariaa jal meh aagee |
Seeing this, the fire in the water is extinguished.
ਸੋ ਬੂਝੈ ਹੋਵੈ ਵਡਭਾਗੀ ॥੫॥
so boojhai hovai vaddabhaagee |5|
They alone realize this, who are blessed by great good fortune. ||5||
ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵੇ ਭਰਮੁ ਚੁਕਾਏ ॥
satigur seve bharam chukaae |
Serving the True Guru, doubt is dispelled.
ਅਨਦਿਨੁ ਜਾਗੈ ਸਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਏ ॥
anadin jaagai sach liv laae |
Those who are lovingly attuned to the True Lord remain awake and aware night and day.
ਏਕੋ ਜਾਣੈ ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਕੋਇ ॥
eko jaanai avar na koe |
They know the One Lord, and no other.
ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਸੇਵੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਇ ॥੬॥
sukhadaataa seve niramal hoe |6|
Serving the Giver of peace, they become immaculate. ||6||
ਸੇਵਾ ਸੁਰਤਿ ਸਬਦਿ ਵੀਚਾਰਿ ॥
sevaa surat sabad veechaar |
Selfless service and intuitive awareness come by reflecting upon the Word of the Shabad.
ਜਪੁ ਤਪੁ ਸੰਜਮੁ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ॥
jap tap sanjam haumai maar |
Chanting, intensive meditation and austere self-discipline come by subduing the ego.
ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਜਾ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਏ ॥
jeevan mukat jaa sabad sunaae |
One becomes Jivan-mukta - liberated while yet alive, by listening to the Shabad.
ਸਚੀ ਰਹਤ ਸਚਾ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥੭॥
sachee rehat sachaa sukh paae |7|
Living a truthful way of life, one finds true peace. ||7||
ਸੁਖਦਾਤਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਮੇਟਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
sukhadaataa dukh mettanahaaraa |
The Giver of peace is the Eradicator of pain.
ਅਵਰੁ ਨ ਸੂਝਸਿ ਬੀਜੀ ਕਾਰਾ ॥
avar na soojhas beejee kaaraa |
I cannot conceive of serving any other.
ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਆਗੈ ਰਾਖਿਆ ॥
tan man dhan har aagai raakhiaa |
I place my body, mind and wealth in offering before Him.
ਨਾਨਕੁ ਕਹੈ ਮਹਾ ਰਸੁ ਚਾਖਿਆ ॥੮॥੨॥
naanak kahai mahaa ras chaakhiaa |8|2|
Says Nanak, I have tasted the supreme, sublime Essence of the Lord. ||8||2||
